I agree with all your tips, esp. this one, which I've learned the hard
way over the last few years. Illness *always* trumps age.
Politics, race, religion, class struggle - all hotspot topics that might not be appropriate for a dinner party, but inspire some to speak up so all shall hear.
Our latest stiff used strength and power to rule the weak and powerless. He was a major influence in framing one of the most racially oppressive regimes of the 20th Century. He carried out his Afrikaans-centric form of rule for over 20 years by imprisoning those who did not agree with his policies, including a man who would eventually dismantle his political machine.
Now he's dead. The bully is dead.
His obit and the latest scoring changes can be found at the Update Page.

2 months left in our 2006 game. I have come up with a few end-of-the-year
awards that, while not adding any points to your final score, will put a few more teams in the spotlight for subjects such as Best Named Team, Most Likely to Succeed in 2007 and maybe a couple of others I'll conjure while under the influence of high fructose corn syrup and "House" reruns.
+Avoid picking dead people
no points and it wastes a spot. kind of obvious, but someone does
it every year.
+Avoid picking people that are just old.
people are living longer and longer. If you're going to pick
someone just becaue they are old, they better be OVER 100.
+limit your popular picks.
they're only worth five points. you need some of these because
you're not going to find enough unique, or at least obscure, people
that meet the criteria for being included in the game to fill up
your roster without them.
+try to find a few people that will be solo hits or at least only
two or three other people will pick. these folks are worth a lot of
points.
+try to pick people that are terminally ill
YBTL team name issues... People can ask all they want... No one HAS to divulge anything... personally If FTG was to identify themselves on the group I would take the opportunity to congratulate them... and then throw some aspersions in their general direction about "being in league with Satan..." or something.
For all any of you know... my second team could be FTG and I am just messing with your heads.
Also... you can keep your email address private so that all such "inquires" would have to be posted out in the open forum. I think this is one of John's better ideas... next to his keeping the game alive. And I think we could have a lot of fun with this.
If I did this right, you should see "oldyingbastards" as my screen
name. If you want to have your team name appears, just choose Add New
Profile under Edit Membership. If you don't see "oldyingbastards",
then ignore this comment.
I'm with hllywood72 and others about having a previous Yahoo ID. (Just for the record, my teams are "Auditioning for the Choir Invisible" and "Die Laughing.)
Boy would I ever love to pepper the top ten with questions! My personal theory is that we're competing against a bunch of professional obituary writers whose business it is to know who's likely to kick off soon. Either that, or FTG bears a striking resemblance to Mandy Patinkin, and buys yellow post-its in bulk.

You have the power to change Texas and the United States. People have died to give you the right to vote. Use it.
I have the same reasoning as Beth...I already have a Yahoo ID and that
made it very easy to sign up for this group.
I think I may have a little insight as to why most people didn't use
their YBTL team name. What if your team is in one of the "money"
spots...would you want people asking you how you came up with your
list? This is a game, and although I am all for keeping it social,
there are probably some tips and tricks some people would rather not
divulge.
Be honest...if you knew who "Forrest Tucker's Ghost" was and you had
his email address, wouldn't you want to know his secret? The man is on
his way to winning his third consecutive year...he has to have some
kind of inside information.

I'm too young to remember our newest stiff's days as the greatest coach in NBA history, but his legend carried on well into my formidable years. He made me want to play basketball, wear green and smoke cigars. Ahhhh, 1st grade!
This hit is the most popular one since February's passing of Don Knotts and is now tied with said hit for 3rd most popular of the year. Only Lou Rawls (48) and Al Lewis (23) have had more point-winners so far this year.
All this fun and more can be found at the Update Page, as always.

Hey there,
I didn't sign up under my team name cause I already had a Yahoo id so
it was easier to just sign in under that name than to create a new
one. But I'm happy to come out of the closet and say that my team is
"Knock, Knock, Knocking on Death's Door." I'll try to set up a
signature or something so when I post people will know the team.

We have hit the Century Mark! Our latest stiff was a TV favorite who gave All-American housewives someone to live through vicariously. Her portrayal opposite Robert Young on the radio and later on television earned her awards and loving fans. Pork chops and pearls for dinner!
Most of the teams scoring on Ol' #100 were part of the red group, looking for a chance to break out in the scoring. One team can now see the contenders.
"Just seen your site and must say this has got to be on of the sickest
things I've seen in the internet.
Playing 'games' based on people's deaths?
What kind of a sad fucker are you?
Needless to say I'll be contacting as many representatives/agents of the deceased on your site and reporting you.
Go outside, get a life. LIVE your own life, don't trivialize so many death for your own sad endeavours."
I've no doubt begun to make friends since adding the message board to our game. While I support the right of the public to exercise their right to free speech, it's only fair for them to support mine.
My response, given in private e-mail, but published here because - hey, he started this:
"Stephen,
Thank you for the kind words. It gives me that warm, squishy feeling to know that while 100 people find the game a mind challenge, there's still room for the mindless
claptrap that comes from people who actually need to get a life.
There are children dying of horrific diseases, soldiers dying in meaningless wars and people suffering under unconscionable conditions due to their religious and political beliefs. But you ignore them and make my website your crusade instead.
Maybe I am just whisteling up a tree... but would it be a huge
impossition to get everyone to fill out their profile for this
group... Stop the panic... It doesn't have to be anything personal(or
even true for that matter) just be creative... have some fun with it!
Not rally sure why people didn't use their YBTL team names to sign up.
Maybe I have had a lil' to much exposure to the Natures Glow (E fluid)
Just thinking it would give another texture to the game and the site.
With an eye on the obits...

Ha, twinkilling, I almost started a thread for this subject last week:
picks we *wish* we'd made. I wish I had known last December that Kate
Bosworth would try to starve herself to death this year. She might
make a good pick for next year if no one steps up to help her. I was
the only one to list Natasha Lyonne in 2005 and it looked like a great
pick: hepatitis, heroin addiction, etc. Alas, she pulled out of it. ;)
In the 2005 pool I had selected Nelson de la Rosa, the sometime actor
who was notable for his size (2 feet, 4 inches). He played Marlon
Brando's sidekick in The Island of Dr Moreau, and became the 2004
world champ Red Sox's good luck charm thanks to Pedro Martinez.
I had based my selection solely on the fact that such a little person
would likely have health problems, though I didn't actually know of
any. But for some reason I left him off my 2006 pools (despite the
fact that I have two of them!) and of course he just died. That would
have been 28 points, arghh!
Had a similar situation with Corey Lidle; earlier this year when he was
with my hometown team (Phillies) the local tv network did a piece on
his passion for flying--and so I immediately made a mental note to add
him to my 2007 roster. Of course we all know how that turned out!
Between Yahoo and AOL, it's taking me a little while to register and be
able to post here. Hopefully this works.
First of all, great idea, this message group. Good luck with it, John.
It looks like YBTL will be growing by leaps and bounds in 2007.
And, I just checked in after a while away and saw that Ross Davidson
the East Ender died, putting a big crimp in my (Go Fish) plans for a
late rally to victory. Nice pick, Forrest and the others who picked
Ross. I'm not even in second place anymore! Oh well, next year.

For the Big Guy...
Want to take the oppertunity to thank John for running the site... I
have enjoyed it for several years... although I usually finish WAY!
out of the coin... I always look forward to the next season of
sayonara.
I was starting to worry that perhaps he had a run in with the Grim
Reaper... but he is back with a vengance and I look forward to a very
busy end game.
Pioneering heart surgeon Michael DeBakey, 98, made his first public appearance since surgery in January for a life-threatening aortic aneurysm and said he intended to make a full recovery.
His comeback not only gave him the oppurtunity to attend the ground-breaking for a library bearing his name at Baylor University, but also reminded 11 teams that while a pick looks good in December when you make your list of stiffs-to-be, it may not pan out by October.
Of course, there's still 11 weeks left and hope springs eternal!

While it looks like Forrest Tucker's Ghost has the inside track for the 3-peat, some new movements have been made in the Top 10 as we say goodbye to another pick.
Assuredly, if our game were based in the UK, there may be more snooker players, Labour Party members, cricketers and EastEnders on our lists. But, there are no international limits to our choices, so once in a while the worldliness of YBTL players becomes a great advantage.
Our latest stiff comes to us from Britain, where he played likeable chaps on soaps and in the movies. This Scottish actor went public with his brain cancer 15 months ago and now says his final tally-ho. More details can be found on the Update Page.

Hi Mark, too bad there's not a "sure winner" this year, like the Pope
last year. I think everyone but one team got points on that one.
You people are really good at this.I have been playing along at home
all year, and have yet to get one point. I'm glad I was too late to
put any money in the pool. No beginners luck here....

Actually I can believe it. I had Howdy Groskloss in the pool, who,
until he passed in July was the oldest living MLB player. It got
barely a mention.
I have looked but can find no current information on his status - dead
or alive. But he being the oldest surviving NFL football player, I
can't believe the sports media would not have been all over it if he
had croaked.
His name had nothing to do with his affection for the automobile, but for the guitar he played. He was an award-winning musician in 2 languages. He topped both the country and the pop charts at the same time. He died.
Our latest stiff was diagnosed with a multitude of ailments after years of drug and alcohol abuse. But it's likely he will best be remembered for his crossover hits in the early '70's. And, ooh, that mustache! Check out the Update Page for the particulars.

BIG NEWS!
The Yahoo! Group Page is now set up. We now have a forum for all of us willing to come out of the safety of the "Bcc:" of the e-mail list.
You will still get all of the updates, even if you do not wish to participate in any of the forums. But if you do not sign up for the group, you will no longer get the updates. It has become more difficult to send e-mails to over 100 list members for a number of reasons, so joining up kills 2 birds with one stone.
