A FEW NOTES FOR AIRCRAFT DESIGNERS:

->the custom limits in plane-maker must now enter the max EGT and ITT
in degrees, not ratio. so enter a value like 1500, not 1.0, for the max
value

->you can now tune the autopilot for your plane... see the expert menu,
art stab window, in x-plane.

->there are 2 EFIS horizons: with an d without CDI. starting with beta
18 (due out tonight) the one WITH CDI will show raw localizer and
glideslope and VOR deflections. the one without will show the flight
director if you are so equipped.

OK SPACE COMBAT 140 IS NOW HERE, FREE FOR MAC-OS-X, WINDOWS, AND LINUX!

x-auto status:

the code is in pretty good shape.. we just do not have internal
cockpits for the cars, or external geometry.

i am perfectly happy to drive in full-screen with no cockpit in the
way, and no silly external view, but that doesnt make a complete sim,
so we are just going to get those things knocked down, and a linux
build is called for for sure of course.

not sure of releas date, but by thanksgiving i think!
hopefully lots sooner.

X-Plane 740 RC-2 is here!

Bug fixes, and:

Elec system overhaul.. gen load, bat load, and bat amp instruments all
avail now in engines/supplement folder.
New object instruction type: polyon offset. This determines how much
polygons (like ramps) are offset to avoid fighting with the ground.
See the KSBD example in the custom scenery folder for an example.
Revised ground-effect model.
Semi-transparent aircraft textures possible (like for cockpit
windows)... just use PNG format for the paint.
More ram savings!!!!

ok 730 rc-3 is out.

bit torrent is acting a bit funny.. downloads might be really slow for
the next few hours but should speed up if everyone leaves their
downlaod box open after they finsih their download... i just tried to
download rc-2 by bit torrent and got 150 k/sec... an excellent downlaod
rate becasue many people have already gotten rc-3 and are leaving their
download windows open (even after they are done downloading) as they
should... the more people do this, the better the download rates will
be.

anyway, give it a shot at x-plane.com.. think this is the FINAL R-C...
i will probably re-label it to FINAL on monday at noon, so you might as
well get it now so you can test it sunday.

COOL!

I kept tweaking the lift and drag coefficients for the rotors in the
helos and could never get the ground effect right... even though I
added a 15% advantage of lift and drag in ground ffect, the rotor still
did not give 15% more thrust (it only gave about 5% more thrust, since
the induced drag and transonic drag rise remained unchanged, and the
rotor thrust does not simply scale linearly with the coefficients of
the blades)

I kept changing the coefficients for every beta and could never get it
right for helos in hover.

Why?

BECAUSE REAL HELOS IN HOVER DO NOT GET THEIR GROUND EFFECT FROM SIMPLY
INCREASING THEIR COEFFICIENTS, THEY GET IT BY PRESSURIZING THE AIR
UNDERNEATH THE DISC, SLOWING THE FLOW OF AIR DOWN THROUGH THE DISC.

Once I changed the rotor model to not only change the coefficients a
bit (just exactly like with airplane wings) but also slow the airflow
thru the disc in hover (because the air cannot move thru the ground!)
all the numbers in the sim suddenly matched the operating handbooks of
the helow perfectly!

This new change (as well as some other bug fixes just reported) will be
in RC-4 in 12 hours.

YOUR BUG REPORTS NEED SOME SERIOUS IMPROVEMENT!!!!!!

A lot of people have been submitting bug reports, and of course this is
good, but we are to the point that the MAJORITY of them are invalid,
and the SIGNIFIGANT majority of them are unclear.

Plenty of people do not understand some elements of aviation ( the
moving map shows the TRACK, not the HEADING, of the plane... 25"
manifold pressure is VERY LITTLE POWER in the Malibu... the engine is
turbocharged so that 35" is maximum, not the 29.92" that you are used
to... therefore 25" at sea level is well below a normal cruise setting
in the Malibu, so of course it will go slow)

These types of mistakes are all very excusable... nobody on Earth knows
everything about avaition... X-Plane is hear to tech you just exactly
these types of things and much more.

The problem is that the vast majority of the reports are useless thigns
like "somethign doesn't work", without the foggiest clue by the
reporter, apparently, that it might work in some cases, but not others,
and that a step-by-step checklist for me to duplciate the exact
siutation is obviously needed for me to see what you are seeing.

Another very common screw-up is for people to say half-baked,
incomplete things like: "the fixes only have 3 characters" or "i cant
open a moview in the drop-down window".
Pardon me for saying, but these reports are incredibly half-ass...
laziness close to the point of stupidity. You know there are MANY
places that fixes can be seen in the X-Plane system (over 600
instruments, dozens of maps, 5 different programs, 2 of which show
fixes, 2 operating systems), yet the reporter NEVER MENTIONS WHERE HE
SEES THE TRUNCATED FIX NAMES!!!!!!!!! X-PLANE? WORLD-MAKER? THE MAPS?
THE GPS? THE FMS? THE ON-PANEL MOVING MAPS? MAC? WINDOWS? WHERE? And
how many "drop down windows" can you find in X-Plane? I don't know what
a "drop-down window" is, but whatever the reporter was trying to talk
about, I know there are a lot of them!

A third common waste of my time is a report along the lines of "the
instruments on my old style-instrument panel don't work right.. you
have to fix it!".... WITH NO AIRPLANE ATTACHED, AND NO SCREENSHOT OF
WHAT THE USER SEES ON HIS OWN COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now that is just
plane lazy, and a waste of my valuable time to send such an incomplete
report. Isn't it obvious you need to send:
->the airplane AND ALL THE AIRFOILS THAT I NEED TO FLY IT MYSELF
->a screenshot of what you see, with the part that YOU THINK is wrong
circeld in red, so i can see it for myself on my computer, and compare
it to what you see?

While the top 2 cases are easy, honest mistakes that I do mind
correcting people's knowledge on 9that is exactly what x-plane and i
are here for) the other cases above are B.S.

Most companies have closed betas to avoid this kind of crap, but I make
them open to get the most thorugh possible test with EVERYONE'S input
that wants to add it... NOW MAKE SURE YOUR BUG REPORTS ARE THOROUGH AND
COMPLETE, AVOIDING THE PITFALLS ABOVE, SO I DON'T REGRET IT!

sorry for being so "severe" in that last email... but 200 emails in 1
day with about half of them being off-the-mark gets a bit annoying!
a few more things to help form the perfect bug report:

->include ALL info in ONE email.. don't assume i know what you are
referring to when you say, out of the blue "it still happens when i
place the aircraft on the map"
(as many, many of the emails i get do... people look at an email from 2
weeks ago, see a percieved problem they mentioned 2 weeks ago, and send
me an email saying
"IT" still happens... never mentioning what "IT" is.. because after
all, "IT" is clearly described in the email they are looking at in
THEIR inbox... but something I only saw 2 weeks
ago so of ourse cannot remember!

so, to summarize my rants to improve bug-reporting in the future:

->be complete in the email, giving a step-by-step process to reproduce
the bug, including the weather, airplane, location, etc if it is

IMPORTANT FOR AIRCRAFT DESIGNERS: A NEW BOX TO CHECK IN PLANE-MAKER

X-PLANE has traditionally automatically decided when to FEATHER the
props on the planes.
It has made this decision based on the number of engines, type of
aircraft (plane, autogyro, helo, VTOL), and  prop selector position.
The problem is, it could NOT always guess right... there are too many
varieties of design.
So, in RC-4, dur out very late tonight, look at the engine screen in
Plane-Maker... there is now a box called "feather prop at minimum prop
setting".
Checking this will cause the prop to feather when the prop control is
fully aft (note: this includes VTOLS that have the prop going to mimum
when the vector goes to 0!)
Make sure this box is NOT checked if you want to avoid the props
feathering in this or any other case.
Make sure it IS if you have a traditional twin that feathers the props
when the blue knobs are pulled full aft.

ok i am NOT going to release RC-4 tonight... it is not quite ready
yet... here is what is done so far:

plane-maker: more digits for custom limits
bug fix: manual radius gyration handled properly
better ground effect for planes and helos
proper gear force output
no z-fighting clouds when set to max altitude
better weapon attachment to the craft, including all angles and angular
rates of both the craft and the weapons
old-style moving map labels fixed
airspeed hold works at subsonic and supersonic speeds
atc correctly reports frigate and carrier speeds

i still have to:

work on blank/zero digits for small reported numbers in the EFIS and HUD
work on legacy panels (730 and earlier custom panel) support

so i should release a new RC tomorrow if i knock down all issues
outstanding as of tomorrow night.

->i put the transparent fuselages in x-plane so maurel stephane could
use his plugin to draw cockpits inside the plane, visible from the
outside.
this is a perfect use of the semi-transparent body... put yuour own
cockpit in the inside.
BUT DO ===>NOT<=== DO THIS WITH WEAPONS OR OTHER EXTRA BODIES! IT WILL
MESS UP THE FLIGHT MODEL, BECAUSE X-PLANE WILL THINK THESE THINGS HAVE
AERO PROPERTIES!
MAKE SURE YOU USE MAUREL'S PLUGINS FOR THIS, WHICH WILL NOT MESS UP THE
FLIGHT MODEL!

oh one more thing:

in 750 or so i do plan to let you add any OBJ file (x-plane object) as
a cocckpit, and no, x-plane will NOT apply any aero to it, so it won't
mess up the flight model.
for now, use maurel's excellent plugin though... his email was in the
last post.
