A good DM is certainly and more important than the rules. But good
players who stay "in character" and have imagination to find
interesting solutions to problems are as important.

I heartily dislike games in which the DM makes up things as they, I
call it cheating. I want to be part of the action or else reading a
good novel is better. As a DM I never tweaked dice-rolls just to
make the action rolling along or make it go my way. That way I did
not have total control over the game and it was much more fun to see
the outcome. I made up simple random tables as the play progressed.
Example: Party creeps up to a camp of Orcs. DM uses simple table for
a d6 roll: 1: guard is asleep, 2: guard is gone off to take a leak
but alert and nearby, 3-4: ordinary drowsy guard at fire, 5: guard
has been doubled, 6: Orcs heard the approach and set up an ambush.
Certain actions or abilitíes of the characters would influcnece the
make-up of the rable, of course.

GW was great. I wish I didn't scrap it way back when I stopped playing
RPGs. With minor tweaks it is great fun. The expirience system was bad
(just drop it). And you have to alter the rules for poison and
radiation so to not make the result automatic but dependent on a
resistance roll (which is included in the rules anyway). Also get the
module "Legion of Gold" if you can.
The mutations were fun indeed. We had a man-sized rat with green fur
that could use photosynthesis to sustain itself.

I had the same experience at Swansea University many, many years ago
and still have fond memeories of the campaign.

Could it be for all the pages and pages of rules - that the main
ingredient for a 'Great Role Play Game' is a good DM?

I once ran in a role playing campaign where the fellow hosting was
using his own system. In his system he kept track of all of your
characters stats and he rolled all of the dice. It was the best role
playing I had ever played. It was a total blast.

A few years later, over a beer, he told me his system was to just let
happen what seemed best for the campaign. He had no system other than
to roll dice and pretend to have a system. Number of stats zero, fun
had mucho.

I have had good role playing games with lots of stats and hard fast
rules, as well as some games with lots of stats that didn't work. The
wrong person hosting a game with no stats or an infinite number of
stats can possibly be a nightmare.

IMHO, the best games play fast and simple. I don't enjoy spending
hours debating rules like I use to as a kid. I haven't yet had a
chance to play Void Trekker, but if I ever did run a Sci Fi RPG, I
would certainly give it a try. It sort of seems like a system for
experienced players, or at least an experienced host, looking for
speed and flexibility.

Yet just another RPG tool in my gaming tool box. If I ever have the
need for it it is there and ready to go. I really hate trying to use
a hammer to saw wood, if you follow my meaning. And you cannot beat
the price, and the customer support is top of the line.

Climbing off the virtual soap box,

Ron

While working in Nottingham this afternnon I saw a second hand box set
of Gamma World. It was not in very good condition and so I did not
pick it up. However on the journey home I was wondering if anyone had
tried this game system and do you have any comments?

may you download the simplified FW rules for free? If yes, where? I
didn't find them on the rattrap page.

I have now read the rules and would offer the following comment;

In comparison to other Space Opera game rules I find the Void Trek
rules to be too simple. For example at the same time I downloaded
the VT rules I also downloaded the simplified Fantastic Worlds rules
from Rattrap Productions and having read both think that in
comparison the VT rules are too simple and the FW rules to
clumbersome - an example of this is the number of characteristics
each player must monitor for every character they control in VT the
number is three plus Karma and in FW the number is nine plus Hero
Points.

Both game systems have their advantages (by the way there are other
systems which could also be used for example Savage Worlds or
Gaslight), but I personally feel that a role playing game needs more
than three characteristics - may be not as many as nine - which
could confuse things.

I suggest that you increase the characteristics to five or maximum
six.

Finally this is not ment as a criticism, more of an observation.

Thanks for the rules

Tony

Very nice eye candy, thanks for sharing. I was discussing Flash
Gordon with my son, since he watched the latest Flash Gordon series on
sci fi channel. I'll have to share you classic Flash Gordon stuff
with him, I think he will find it interesting.

Hi

I'm excited about the new Flash Gordon show! I'm also really excited
about a site I found with a forum and a Fan Fiction section, which
has, bar none the best internet publishing software I've ever seen.

Thought I'd share the love and we could all chat and post about this
wicked new show!

Have any of you checked out Mudpuppy games? They are carrying the
old Heritage Galacta line of miniatures, and have released a new
version of the rules too! They can be found at www.mudpuppygames.com

I think that many of these figures would work very well for B.E.M.s
and evil overlord types! I missed out on these figs the first time
around, and plan on getting some at some point down the road. As far as
Two Hour Wargames is concerned, I too heartily endorse the good
rulebooks Ed creates.

Exactly.

If you have previously expended Karma points in the same session, you
roll at the reduced level.

Note that you cannot use Karma points to modify Karma rolls, only rolls
for the other stats.

Hi Ron, thanks for the reply. I used to think there was a gamer
everywhere myself, must admit this is the only place I ever went
there ain't; just my luck it is now my hometown! I even ran the Club
in my old hometown, where I grew up, never been able to whip up any
enthusiasm here. Every Gamer seems to have a specialised interest,
mostly GW's WH40K, and/or D&D's newest incarnation; I do own the
newer books but am not keen. Maybe it's me! They want a game-winning
army, a Videogame cheat. Also at best they're generally early-teen
videogame enthusiasts, when you start to get complicated with dice
and things, or talk about Characters, the eyes go glazed! ********
they talk like that at School.
Me, I LIKE the 80s stuff, just complex enough without hampering your
imagination; the thing that first attracted me to rpgs was the sheer
scope of the idea, I had the same sort of "spiritual moment" a born-
again Christian must have when I realised there was a way to make the
movies constantly playing on the inside of my eyelids into reality!
Or rather A reality! Mind you, I'd been collecting "soldiers" for 20
years by then!
Have Alternity too but again no takers, SF seems to be too complex
unless it is the "Blood and Carnage" of 40K.
I've looked at THW, in fact I am a member, just haven't got around to
the solos yet; too damn lazy!
Tarra for now,
Ian

Hey, Ian good to see you here.

Sort of ironic the comments about the lack of folks to play. Here in
the States the rumor mill has it on your side of the pond there is a
gamer behind every tree and every town has a gaming club or local pub
people where gather to play. Guess it just goes to show the grass

Have you looked into Two Hour Wargames? The system has a built in fog
of war that makes it very nice for solo play. They even like having
solo games battle reports pasted to their Yahoo group so folks can
discuss the game.

Hi all, just joined after finding the site on Freewargamesrules. Looks
fascinating, combines three of my major interests, Roleplaying,
Wargaming and SF, particularly Space Opera style. I've been reading the
stuff since the Sixties (not QUITE the fifties!) but I've read the 50s
stories as well. Afraid I don't get much gaming in as nobody to play

I have been reading the VT rules and the Karma is a pretty neat idea.
I usually hand out something I call "heroic action points". I just
let you call one die roll when you expend one. You expend the point
and set down the die how every you like, no roll needed.

I like the way you can expend karma to enhance rolls and it is also a
stat that you roll against.

After you use karma to change a roll, do you roll against modified
karma when checking it in the future? Say you get surprised and use
karma to roll your miss is it modified or full strength?

These are very nice for just about any game system with a little

I see that there are some others from Columbus Ohio here.
If you are interested in playing some games, Voidtrekker and I play a
lot of different things at Ravenstone Games.
Usually on Wednesday nights.
