WOW. The marathon Sixth Fleet game is finally concluded! Congratulations to the
Soviets for their win, but also to NATO who stuck it out.
And a HUGE THANKS goes to Tracy Johnson for moderating this double-blind game
for 10 years. Having been moderator for a 2nd fleet game for a year or so, I
know how much work this could be. His perseverance, knowledge of and
improvisation (if necessary) of the fleet rules, his creative narratives behind
the rules (think a wargaming Howard Cosell!) and his moderating skill between
two energetic teams is truly a tribute to the best of our wargaming hobby. I
enjoyed playing in it when I had the time, and following it when I had less.
Thanks for keeping that game going, Tracy!

The 10 year long game of 6th Fleet is over. This game originally started
on the ONELIST list-server before Yahoo ate it up. My earliest e-mail message
on this PBeM is dated 10 August 1999. Memorable events included the Algerian
Su-20 Ace (that NATO never could shoot down) and the Kursk incident where we had
a moratorium for a few months on game play.
(Now may be a good time to play the Soviet Anthem .wav file from the files
section of the 6th_Fleet_Soviet or NATO yahoo group.)
Despite some debate about the extent of the Soviet Victory, it is clear the
Soviets won hands down. The debate centers as follows:
- If Sea Denial is counted at game end, the the Soviets gained a Substantive
Victory at 485 points over 322 NATO.
- If Sea Denial is NOT counted at game end, the Soviets gained a Marginal
Victory at 482 points over 322 NATO.
Generally the issue is what gets counted at game end versus whether the
Armistice Marker moved or not.

I have TWO prizes available for both STAVKA, and COMSIXFLT, I leave it up to
both parties to decide which is the most valuable prize (or just plain 'dibs'?)
Pictures of both prizes (front and back) have just been posted in the Prizes
Album of the PHOTOS section of both 6th_Fleet_NATO and 6th_Fleet_Soviet yahoo
groups.
One prize is a cap device from an old Soviet military hat.
The other prize is a Richard Ginori (made in Italy) 6th_Fleet Ashtray* (numbered
369).
STAVKA and COMSIXFLT contact me off list with Shipping Addresses.
* Considering the performance of NATO, an ashtray may be appropriate.
