The server's down again.
Last time I acted too soon and sent out a message, I figured I'd sent
it out too soon since the server was up fairly quickly.
Unfortunately, it's been close to 3 hours since the server went down
with no ETA as to when it will be back online.
It is suspected that some of the RAM in our system may have gone
bad. Until Rackshack's Tech Support looks into the matter, there's
nothing that we can do to fix it.
Mike is going to be contacting Tech Support to see if we can speed
things along more quickly.
The error wasn't as serious as I first thought.
Apparently the kernel didn't like something I was doing and caused a
kernel panic.
After a forced reboot, things returned back to normal.
(Good thing we use a journaling file system... helps to prevent data
loss)
About 30 minutes ago, the system's networking system stopped
responding to everything except pings. We're attempting to find out
why this has happened and get the server operational again.
If you've tried connecting to the server Thursday, Feb. 13th, you
might have noticed that the server is down.
The bad news is that it will be down until sometime Friday at the
very least.
Apparently a file system check was needed and was stopping the system
during boot with a prompt. Unfortunately, since we don't have
physical access to the server, we couldn't fix it from here.
For some reason or another, VGMusic's server decided that it wasn't
going to start back up when I rebooted it 30-45 minutes ago. I'm
having the folks over at Rackshack.net (our host) look into the
matter.
With any luck, the server will be back up shortly.

Well, it seems that Telefragged wanted to move a little faster than
we anticipated. After Mike added me as the domains technical
contact, so that I could transfer the DNS servers on the 26th,
Telefragged shut down our main VGMusic.com acount. That was sometime
earlier today.
For the next 24 hours or less, our domain name (vgmusic.com) will be
inoperable. However, the myvgmusic.com already points to the new
domain and can be used to access the site.
In fact, when the vgmusic.com domain will point to myvgmusic.com
automatically until I change it after the vgmusic.com domain name
propogates.
Unfortunately, as a side effect to the premature move, everything
added to new-files in the past month was lost. I wasn't going to
back them up until the end of this week, as to minimize disruption to
the site. Also, the counter is off by quite a bit.
The Videogame Music Archive is going to be our 10th Location towards
the end of November. This time, we're moving to a dedicated server.
We may experience some minor problems for a few days while the domain
is transferred. We are planning on starting the domain transfer on
the 26th.
The Newly Submitted Files directory and the hit counters will be
locked around the 24th, so we can compress all the files newer than
our last full backup. When those are transferred to our new site,
our should be completely set up and ready to go.
On another note, December 19th marks the 5th birthday of the
Videogame Music Archive. Happy Holidays! :)
The vgmusic.com domain name was set to expire on the 15th of October
this year. If I hadn't checked the domain names information due to
another sites expiring, it probably would have gone by unnoticed
until it expired.
Anyway, the VGMusic.com domain name has been renewed for an
additional 5 years, pending confirmation from Verisign. That means
we won't have to worry about the domain name again until October
15th, 2006.
Amazingly enough, it's been over a year since we sent out anything to
this list... the last message was on June 6th, 2000.
Everything is running smoothly, the main purpose of this letter is to keep this list operational, and to update everyone on a few things.
First, this list has passed it's 2nd birthday on May 23rd. Yay!
Second, I (Powerlord) have taken over as Archive Administrator, and Peach has taken over as Assistant Administrator. Mike Newman is the Chief Financial Officer, and Necrosaro has retired.
Third, I set up a new poll question regarding the direction VGMusic.com should take... I'm looking for the opinions of everyone interested in the site. The poll page is http://www.vgmusic.com/robpoll/robpoll.cgi?start
The website went offline approximately an hour ago. Telefragged's main
web server went offline. It will most likely be offline until at least
10am Central Time.
On another note, our forums server is still up, so to give you
something to do, you can post on our forums. The forums address is
forums.vgmusic.com

Sorry to have to send out this message, but egroups.com told me the mailing
list would be cancelled if I didn't show some activity on it after not using
it for a very very long time.
VGMusic.com is fine. Our uptime has been wonderful lately.
Anyway, happy new year!

Silly me! VGMusic.com is now back up online (9:50pm Wednesday EST).
I'm glad my prediction about the website being down for the rest of the
night was wrong! YIPPEE!
-Mike Newman
Sorry to fill up everyone's email box, but I have a little bit more
news on VGMusic.com's status:
Good news: The server itself is perfectly fine.
Bad news: The reason why the Telefragged server (which hosts our site)
is offline is according to one of our network admins: "backhoe took out
a fiber line".
!?!?! Construction equipment can be dangerous stuff. We still have no
clue about when we will be back online. I'm quite majorly distressed
about this. Especially since I've told most people I know to use my
newman@... email address and that isn't working right now of
course. Oh well. At least I have my Yahoo web email account...
As of right now, my guess is the website will be down for the rest of
today, if not longer. Hope to have better news tomorrow.
If you run any websites, be sure to spread the word of vgmusic's status
if you think it will be of interest to your web visitors....
-Mike Newman
newman@... <-- temp email address that i was trying to phase out
VGMusic.offline.outofservicefortoday.com
:^(
P.S. - I consider it quite ironic this happened today since just this
morning I renewed the vgmusic.com domain name with internic.
!?!??!?!!?!!
Wednesday, 4:40pm EST:
Well, I haven't had to do this since Sept 1998, but just wanted to let everyone
know on the VGMusic Emergency Mailing List that vgmusic's server (Telefragged's
server which hosts tons of sites) is currently down. It went down at
approximately 2:30pm EST and is still currently down (4:40pm EST). I have no
other info unfortunately. As regards to when we will be back up, I have no idea,
but our hoster admins know about it and are working very hard right now to fix
it.
-Mike Newman
VGMusic.com
Powerlord here,
I've got even worse news this time. I just found out that Telefragged is down
because of a major hard drive crash. It might take a day or two, perhaps
longer, to get Telefragged operational again.
(Luckily, everything was backed up shortly before it went down)

Powerlord here,
It seems that the site has been going up and down all day long. We think that
Telefragged is modifying the server. We hope that everything will be back to
normal tomorrow.

VGMusic.com is still down after 24 hours. I've been told by the people who
own the web server that everything should be up and running by tomorrow. I
sure hope so! :^)

According to my hit stats, the site went down at about 2pm EDT! (so the site
has been down for about 6 hours now). I was offline most of the day, so I
didn't notice until someone just emailed me about it recently. :^(
Something strange is happening with the server. Nothing too serious it
seems. Hopefully the site will be back up sometime tonight or tomorrow.
Unfortunatley, I don't control the server (the machine that runs the
website), so we all can only just sit back and wait for the best.

Hi all!
In most cases, you probably can't reach http://www.vgmusic.com/ or
http://vgmusic.com/
Its because that address has already been moved to the new server. The only
technical difficulty with that is...
the new server is down!
So don't bother changing any of your bookmarks with that temporary address I
sent out earlier. The next time the site comes up should be at vgmusic.com,
and it should be off the new server. I just don't know how long the new
server will continue to be down. It seems to have been down since sometime
yesterday afternoon.

Our hosters, Telefragged.com, our moving all their sites to this server. Our
domain name should shortly be moved to the new address.
In the mean time, uploads will not be permitted until the site has been 100%
moved.
The old site may go offline completely without warning, which is why we
warned people to signup to this mailing list. But since the vgmusic.com
domain name is being moved to the new site shortly, most people will not
even notice the transition.

10:32pm EST, Sunday July 5, 1998 -
At about 10pm EST, the website was put on "forbidden" mode. This generally
occurs when one of the CGI scripts goes bonkers (as I was just informed on
ICQ by a person who runs my server). We are currently trying to correct the
situation. Even I am "forbidden" from my site, so I have to work with the
telefragged (my hosters) adminstration to resolve this.
When the site comes back up online, check out the FF7 PC music. Its awesome
(I just got FF7 for the pc too!)

VGMusic.com is currently down (at about 6pm EST Thursday) because our
conversion scripts, which we have been using to convert the old webpages
into the new format, have caused a huge drain on Telefragged's servers.
Since the conversion is a one-time deal, we hope to have the server back up
later tonight. I'll keep you all posted.
For now, you will see "Forbidden" listed when you try to view the site. Even
I can't get into it (or my files), but the Telefragged owners are just
taking precautions because of the extent VGmusic's cgi scripts have caused
in server usage.
No need to be worried. Hope to have good news soon.

I wanted to send out another test message, since the VGMusic Emergency
News mailing list has now surpassed 100 subscribers!!
Ever wonder how I figure out whether my site is online/offline??
Simply go to stats at:
http://w25.hitbox.com/w0/index.html.cgi?I31680941
To get the day's stats (which helps me tell at which hour
the website has gone down if zeros or single digits start
popping up) check out the frame:
http://w25.hitbox.com/w0/stats.cgi?I31680941?ih
To see the month's stats, check out:
http://w25.hitbox.com/w0/stats.cgi?I31680941?id
You can see on this page that the site has not been offline
for extended time since May 6. Let's all hope this trend continues
indefinitely!!!
Another place to get some misc. stats about VGMusic is at:
http://www.telefragged.com/logfiles/vgmusic.com.html
These stats aren't updated often enough as the hitbox stats,
so I don't look at them too often. Plus, since VGmusic.com and
Telefragged.com are on the same computer/server, if one site is down,
both will be down. So hitbox.com is on another server and is almost
always available to look at.
Thanks for caring enough about VGMusic.com to be a part of this mailing
list. I hope I don't have to use this mailing list too often in the
future.
