Well, if you're going to go that far, why not rough out your mapping in Max first? I mean, I hated Max 2.5's Unwrap but Max 3 does most everything NST does....

I don't know of any specific optimizing programs or plugins offhand though I know they exist. Someone on this list should know and if not try the messageboards...
