It has already started, Taral, Carl, Berhard and Paul are playing.
Sorry for not telling anything before I were really busy and I confess
I'm a bit lazy.

Next game is Carl Bernhard scheduled for tuesday 10p.m CET

Regards.

I hope to get the transcriptions of the games and publich later.

I should say thank you to everyone for playing. One
innovation that I promise will come soon is a link to
the graphical game in each move's email (this has
already been implemented in Yinsh and a few other
games).

Send me any suggestions as to what you'd like to see
different next year! Perhaps we can somehow manage an
online leader board to show status.

Cheers,

Lyman

Fritzd is the champion (he won all the games in the final) and
Stcharles is the runner-up (only Fritzd beat him). Scotty resigned
all his games due time problems.
And the game jarrausi-berhard has not finished yet.

As I promised the winner and the runner-up can take part in the
only-line tournament if they wishes.
I'd like to know if they want to play and I also need to know if
Twixter the previous finalist (who is also invited) want to take part
in the candidate's tournement as well.

Taral is the current world champion. If he wishes he could take part
in the candidate's tournament as well (it's not compulsory because he
qualifies to the finals directly). But if he won the candidate's
tournament he wouldn't need to defend his title in the finals.

There will be another person in the candidate's chosen by me.

And I might invite another person, the winner of the head-to-head
Unlur tournament organized by David Molnar.

Hello,

The games in pool B finished.

I surprised myself winning all my games, but I'm afraid that the
final round will be different.

   b jarrausi 6 0
   b fritzd 4 2
   b scotty 4 2
   b zamunda 3 3
   b pedro 2 4
   b camb 2 4
   b drp 0 6

So jarrausi, fritz and scotty advance to the final. (I found a bug
in the qualification system, If I had lost scotty I would have
eliminate a potetial enemy in the final -fritzd-. Of course, fair
play is important to me and I managed to beat scotty in beautiful
and tough game.

drp resigned all his game, so his games are not counted in the stats

Games won by player 1: 7
Games won by player 2: 8

Games won by white: 8
Games won by Black: 7

Straight wins: 8
No-Straight wins: 7
(I call straight win when the games wasn't directly influenced by
the black possibility of creating lines)

Arrows: 0
No arrows : 15

Maybe we didn't have arrows because players in this group liked to
spread the pieces around the board instead of playing directly in
the center. However there are several arrows in the other group.

I guess a great and very emotive final because the level of the
players is strong (or at least stronger than I expected, even my
level was stronger thatn I expected)and the difficulty of winning
all the games in unlur.

I remind you that the winner and the runner-up of the tournement
will be invited to the unlur's world championship candidate's
tournament.

The develop of the games in the second group is slower. Taral (the
current champion wasn't able to move during Xmas and now he is under
time pressure in some games. I am looking forward to seeing the
results of the second group where the fight is terrible as well.

regards.

Thanks Lyman for organizing the e-mail tournament.
I'd like you to take part in the tournament if you were really
interested in. I'm quite convinced I'll play.

By the way, The winner and the runner up of the e-mail tournament
will get the passport for the world championship candidate's
tournament 2004. The other two people will be (David Bush if he is
inteested) and a person chosen by me (and not me).

I David doesn't want to play Jim Thompson will get the passport)

And of course, the candidates tournament and the World Champion
tournament will be played in real time.

Hi Lyman! Quick answer!

Maybe annotating games is not so important as I first thougth. It's
likely that the games that deserves to be saved are the games of the
finals. And in these cases are spectators that can do that without
disturbing the players.

I think that an e-mail tournament would help Unlur to be more
popular among the e-mail players.
I also like the idea of having a bi-annual on-line tournament and a
bi-annual e-mail tournament. What do you think?. However the e-mail
tournament on a 8-size board seems to be too much long.

May main objection was annotating moves. It would be
good to find a solution to that (such as having an
option on Ludoteka.com to email the move record to a
designated person).

If there is still interest in an email tournament I
could help organize it. I was signed up before it
fizzled. To be honest, I was afraid I had somehow
missed it.

Hello, everybody.

This is the announcement of the 2º Unlur World Championship.
Glenn Overby proposed a tournament by e-mail, but finally it wasn't
organized. (I don't know the reason). So I'm thinking that we could
yearly alternate a real time tournament and an e-mail tournament.
I want to know your opinions.
Some players told me that the past tournament was very long. Others
didn't like to annotate the moves. Now some says that it should be
played on the 8-size board.
The 2º World Tournament starts in January, so I'd like to know all
your opinions before the end of November, so I can have the rules
ready in December.

Taral Seierstad (Norway) is the current world champion who
convincenly beat David Bush (USA) 3-0 in the finals.

However there is something which is immovable Taral is defending the
title and he will qualified directly for the finals, however, I'll
let him play the candidates tournament to be able train to the
finals. Maybe if he wins the candidates tournament he shouldn't have
to defend the title in the finals, but I have to think about this.

Suggestions are welcome.

Regards.

-Jorge

The list of entrants for the PBEM Unlur tournament is now at 11 or 12.
apostolis (all names are Richard's PBEM Server IDs) is the only original
entrant who has not yet confirmed, and I think he's on vacation. The 11
who have replied in the last couple of days are bernhard, camb, chaz,
eskimal, jarrausi, lyman, mmammel, pedro, rrognlie, scotty, stcharles. My
own decision to play or not will be based on total entry and the best
interests of the event.

I'm still accepting entries, and targeting a start date around May 1.

With a time limit of 60 days (per player) for all moves, what do you think
is a fair vacation provision? I'm open to suggestions.

That's good news!
Easter seems to be the natural period which separates
the on-line and the e-mail tournament.
Of course I'll play.
But I'm concerned about the summer season, I suppose
that players are allowed to take vacations.
Glen will you play? I hope so, I think that organizers
can play as well.

I posted the announcement below to the pbmserv-users list on February 24th,
and followed it up on the Unlur group on Yahoo! a few days later. The
inventor of Unlur asked that I hold up starting the PBEM event until after
the online World Championship concluded. Those finals have just ended.

Six players have expressed a definite intent to enter: lyman, apostolis,
chaz, mmammel, rrognlie, and scotty. Three other players, jarrausi,
bernhard, and lhh61, expressed interest without committment, and two whose
gamerz.net user IDs are unknown have also written.

I'd like to get the first Richard's PBEM Server International Unlur
Tournament under way in the next couple of weeks...say by May 1st. The
proposed time limit will be a maximum of 60 days per player to make all
moves of the game, so a round will take at most four months and the
tournament not over eight. Probably it will be much faster.

It should be possible to follow all tourney games graphically, courtesy of
an Unlur bot which deposits pretty pictures at:

http://www.math.lsu.edu/~wamelen/gamerz/Unlurlinks.html

(...and thanks to the owner for that service to the Unlur community!)

===== updated announcement follows =====

Abstract Games magazine recently held a contest for original game designs
using
unequal forces. The contest winner, Unlur, is beginning to attract
worldwide
attention.

Unlur is a connection game, played on a hexagonal board. Black is trying
to
make a Y (connecting three alternating sides) without first making a line
(connecting two opposite sides). White is trying to do the opposite.

White would ordinarily have a huge edge. But the game begins with a unique
contract phase, as both players alternate putting Black pieces on the board
until one player or the other thinks they can win with Black. That player
then
passes, and the opponent places a first piece as White.

Games often last 20 turns or less for each side, and cannot be longer than
46. (My longest here so far ended on the 29th turn, my shortest on the
7th.)

An Unlur implementation exists on this server, thanks to Lyman Hurd.

==========

ANNOUNCING: the first Richard's PBEM Server International Unlur Tournament.

If you would like to play, send me an email at guardcaptain@....
I
expect to organize the tournament in two rounds, playing four games per
round (possibly six in the final), requiring 50% score to advance. Some
details will depend on the number of players, but you won't be playing more
than four tourney games at once (again, possibly six in the final).

Taral got his second win.

Taral is proposing contracts which are confusing
David. In the first game Taral chose white pieces and
got an straight win, this time he took the black ones
and he got another straight win.

Next game on Thursday 10 April 17:30 CET.

If this time David can't top Taral, Taral will become
the first Unlur Champion

| Hi David,
|
| I suggest 14.00 UTC. That would be 4 pm in Norway
| since Daylight Saving Time starts here tomorrow. Do
| you know who is supposed to start the game?
|
| Taral

Good question. Since you went first in our game during the
tournament, the usual procedure is that I would go first
for the final. Does that sound right Jorge?

Uh, UTC is 5 hours ahead of EST right? I will see you then!

We have more results:

Stcharles-Grau 1:0
Jarrausi-Hibernator 1:0

Since I won a game, Taral is the second finalist, Congratulations!

Stcharles got 6 points as well, (and I migth get 6 points too if I
win my remaining game with Lyman) but according to the Berger System
is Taral the one who passes to the finals. I'm sorry Jim, you have
proved you are a very solid player you even beat Taral, but Taral's
victory over Twixter was very valuable.
But as you pointed out, you also got the second place! Thanks for
playing and thanks for everyone who took part in this emotional
tournament.

The finals can start as soon as the finalist want, maybe the
finalist are tired and they migth want to postpone the finals, in
this case and if both are agree the finals can be postponed.

By the way the remaining games have to be played before April
finishes, this is a time limit. If any game is not finished before
the limit I'll think of any solution, but I won't allow to play
tournament games after the deadline

Regards.

Table
=====

Twixter 7/8
Taral 6/8
Stcharles 5/7
Jarrausi 4/6
Grau 3/6
Jedrek13 1/4
Hibernator 1/5
Lyman 1/6
Eskimal 0/6

So the first place is for Twixter, since he is the only one who got
7 points, Taral got a good point beating Twixter and now he is the
clear favourite for playing the finals againts Twixter. And the only
other person who could go to the finals is Stcharles. Jarrausi and
Stcharles would have to win their remaining games for getting
Taral's same score.

As you probably know, in the case that two or more players get the
same of points, we use the Berger system.

So I assume that Stcharles and Jarrausi win their remaining games,
else Taral would pass. Then,

Taral beat Lyman,Jedrek,Eskimal,Jarrausi, Twixter, Hiber
Stcharles beat Taral, Hiber, Lyman, Jedrek, Eskimal, Grau
Jarrausi beat Stcharles,Jedrek,Eski,Grau,Lyman,Hiber

We can forget, the points of the players that Taral, Stcharles and
Jarrausi beat, and we have the following points for the Berger
System.

Taral: 7+4+J+J =11+J+J
Jarrausi: 5+S+3+G+G =8+S+G+G
Stcharles: 6+3+G+G =9+G+G

Each 'J' is one point is Jarrausi wins one of his remaining
games. 'S' for Stacharles and 'G' for Grau. As we assumed that
Jarrausi won his two remaning games, it means that Taral would get
13 points and then He passes to the finals. So Jarrausi can't pass
to the final. And the maximum number of points that Stcharles can
get is 11 so if Jarrausi wins a game or Grau loses a game, Taral
will pas to the final.

In other words, Taral will be the finalist if Stcharles, Jarrausi or
Grau lose a game. In other case, Taral and Stacharles get a paerfect
tie, so they would have to play an extra an decisive game and since
the previous time they played Stcharles was the first player, in
this game Taral would be the first one.

Stcharles told me that Jedrek apparently lost his internet access
again, it wouldn't be a problem if we could determine the finalist
without playing all the games ( and the remaining games could be
played later).

So I am going to try to play my games as soon and possible and see
if I am able to win at least one of them.

The finals
===========

The winner and the runner-up of the round robin are in the finals,
the first who wins three games will be the First World Unlur
Champion. Finalists will play one game per week, and they will have
to decide the time and they day they like to play. And they have to
post to the Unlur group each scheduled game. So people could start
discussing about a good time for the finals, since I consider that
there will be some people interested in seeing the games.

For those who play Unlur by email, this might be interesting. Paul van
Wamelen has added Unlur to his site:

http://www.math.lsu.edu/~wamelen/gamerz/Unlurlinks.html

Here you can see a grahpical representation of all the Unlur games
currently played at Richard's PBeM server. There are lots of other
games there too.

Once upon a time I made a similar page myself, at
<http://www.mi.uib.no/~taral/pbem>, which requires Java. Unlur isn't
there yet, but since the Hexxagon board is identical to the Unlur
board, you can choose Hexxagon instead.

Lyman Hurd recommended that I forward this message here, to catch more of the
world of Unlur. Jorge Gómez Arrausi also wrote in response to the message,
expressing both pleasure that someone wanted to organize an Unlur tournament and
his suggestion that it not start until after the existing online event on
Ludoteka.

I have six or seven interested players so far. Your comments are invited.

Abstract Games magazine recently held a contest for original game designs using
unequal forces. The contest winner, Unlur, is beginning to attract worldwide
attention.

Unlur is a connection game, played on a hexagonal board. Black is trying to
make a Y (connecting three alternating sides) without first making a line
(connecting two opposite sides). White is trying to do the opposite.

White would ordinarily have a huge edge. But the game begins with a unique
contract phase, as both players alternate putting Black pieces on the board
until one player or the other thinks they can win with Black. That player then
passes, and the opponent places a first piece as White.

Games often last 20 turns or less for each side, and cannot be longer than 46.
(My longest here so far ended on the 29th turn, my shortest on the 7th.)

An Unlur implementation exists on this server (thanks to Lyman Hurd?), with over
100 games in progress or complete.

==========

ANNOUNCING: the first Richard's PBEM Server International Unlur Tournament.

If you would like to play, send me an email at glenn@.... I
expect to organize the tournament in two or three rounds, playing four games per
round (possibly six in the final), requiring 50% score each round to advance.
Some details will depend on the number of players, but you won't be playing more
than four tourney games at once (again, possibly six in the final).

Your suggestions for time limit or other details are most welcome. Get in on
the ground floor. Let's give this solid new game a big push!

This is what Jim Thompson sent to me:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Jorge,

This is not a matter of great importance, but I hope I can convince
you
to reconsider the tiebreaking rule you recently posted on the
newsgroup.

"If two or more players get an equal number of points when the
tournament finishes. Each player will sum the number of points that
were got by
each player that they beat. In this case the player with the higher
puntuation of this type will get a better position. In the case they
also
tie, the will have to play an extra game."

Other than to decide who plays in the finals, breaking ties is not
necessary. Letting a tie stand does not cause a problem. On the
other
hand, breaking a tie carries a cost. Logically, tieing with one
other
person for say fourth place really means tieing for fourth and fifth
place. It is like coming in four-and-a-half'th place. But that is
not how
people feel about it. They speak and think only of the higher
(fourth)
place. They both FEEL like they came in fourth. The difference
between tieing for a place and having that place by yourself feels
much less
that the difference between tieing for that place and having the next
lower place. If the tie is broken, the winner of the tiebreak will
feel
a much smaller gain than the loss felt by the loser. I think the
reason for this is with a tie both players have a claim to the higher
place,
and the fact that it is only a partial claim matters very little
emotionally.

To summarize, it seems to me that breaking ties is not necessary and
will decrease the total of all players' satisfaction with their
tournament results. I hope you will consider letting ties stand, at
least those
ties for places other than second. Having people feel as good as
possible about their results can only be a good thing.

Jim
-------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm quite agree with Jim, so players with the same points will get
the same place, and only in the case of a possibility of reaching the
final match, we will adopt the formula I suggested after some players
asked me how would I solve these kind of ties.
I'm open to debating this.

BTW, I received a message from Andrzej Baniak (Jedrek) telling me
that lost his internet access for 3 weeks but that he want to play
his games yet. So if you have a pending game with him try to arrange
the game.

Regards.

If two or more players get an equal number of points when the
tournament finishes. Each player will sum the number of points that
were got by each player that they beat. In this case the player with
the higher puntuation of this type will get a better position.
In the case they also tie, the will have to play an extra game.
