This is what Jim Thompson sent to me:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Jorge,

This is not a matter of great importance, but I hope I can convince
you
to reconsider the tiebreaking rule you recently posted on the
newsgroup.

"If two or more players get an equal number of points when the
tournament finishes. Each player will sum the number of points that
were got by
each player that they beat. In this case the player with the higher
puntuation of this type will get a better position. In the case they
also
tie, the will have to play an extra game."

Other than to decide who plays in the finals, breaking ties is not
necessary. Letting a tie stand does not cause a problem. On the
other
hand, breaking a tie carries a cost. Logically, tieing with one
other
person for say fourth place really means tieing for fourth and fifth
place. It is like coming in four-and-a-half'th place. But that is
not how
people feel about it. They speak and think only of the higher
(fourth)
place. They both FEEL like they came in fourth. The difference
between tieing for a place and having that place by yourself feels
much less
that the difference between tieing for that place and having the next
lower place. If the tie is broken, the winner of the tiebreak will
feel
a much smaller gain than the loss felt by the loser. I think the
reason for this is with a tie both players have a claim to the higher
place,
and the fact that it is only a partial claim matters very little
emotionally.

To summarize, it seems to me that breaking ties is not necessary and
will decrease the total of all players' satisfaction with their
tournament results. I hope you will consider letting ties stand, at
least those
ties for places other than second. Having people feel as good as
possible about their results can only be a good thing.

I'm quite agree with Jim, so players with the same points will get
the same place, and only in the case of a possibility of reaching the
final match, we will adopt the formula I suggested after some players
asked me how would I solve these kind of ties.
I'm open to debating this.

BTW, I received a message from Andrzej Baniak (Jedrek) telling me
that lost his internet access for 3 weeks but that he want to play
his games yet. So if you have a pending game with him try to arrange
the game.

Regards.

-Jorge
