Dear all,

It seems to have gone very quiet in the group. Is there much going on?

I am now working out my notice period from my current job, with nothing to go
to, so I might have some spare time to help out with some stuff.

Cheers

The Games Store website is now offering the ability to link to Games-
related websites totally free of charge. It would be a good
opportunity to get a presence here.

Is there a website (or multiple websites) I should add?

Well - for Diplomacy I run the following...

www.diplomacy-archives.com
www.variantbank.com
www.armisticeday.com
www.diplomacyworld.org

I would also recommend

www.dip2000.org.uk
www.diplom.org

As the list owner I was wondering whether the time hasn't come to put
this list to bed?

Discussion is at a minimum and the pbm hobby has almost completely
migrated to the Internet.

Any views?

Well I suppose the question is - is it serving a purpose ? Trying to retain a
paper based postal gaming fraternity is perhaps now a luddite thing.

However, as I just joined and haven't done anything in fandom for about 10 years
I guess I'm not the best person to express an opinion!

Tell you what if we get 5 people saying - beyond doubt - that we should
keep this list open in the next 72 hours (and they promise to contribute
in future) then we'll keep it open. Otherwise I'll kill it on Friday.

I always read the messages that come up here, Steve, but never get to
contribute because I don't have much connection with the postal hobby as
such. Yes, I get 4 or 5 PBM zines, but I don't play games in them.

Oops, I've contributed now haven't I... :-)

Thanks for keeping things ticking over, guys. The
forum never turned into what I thought it might - a
place for old editors to go for reminiscence and
consolation. But I guess zine editors never die - they
just find a new publishing address. Since the hobby as
I used to know it barely exists any more, I guess it's
time to concede to the greater power of the Net. A
shame, but ... progress, eh? So long as there is some
form of archive knocking around somewhere, I'll
continue to feel my efforts were not in vain. And if
ever the Preston Polycon and Geordiecon survivors feel
like a chat, there's plenty of room in Yahoogroups :o)

TTFN

Keep in touch, eh?

We should definitely keep it open. It doesn't cost anything, and messages
go up every now and again. So why kill it? It may not generate masses of
discussion, but useful things come up every now and again. I don't
understand your desire to kill it off, Stephen.

If something is more or less moribund I don't understand a desire to
keep it. However, I agree it costs nothing.

Speaking totally selfishly here.
If it wasn't for this group I wouldn't have got involved in PBM in the first
place. When The Tangerine Terror was barely Kumquat-sized, my plea for help
on this list encouraged Alan P and Stephen A (bless 'em) to run adverts in
their respective 'zines and got me a couple of Gamestarts. I had been about
to throw in the towel, but I'm now trundling along OK.
I work in an internet start-up. I develop web applications, but I really
don't see the attraction of web-based zines. I'm glad I came across this
group. I'm sure there are loads of other people out there who would be too.
Given that it costs nothing, I'd be keen to see it stay alive, for when
someone has that flash of inspiration.

I'm seeing a need.

I agree with Rip, it's a good place for old editors to reminisce and regroup,
even find old friends. Hell, I only just joined! Anyone know if TROG (the roar

Keep the list!

So what if it isn't heavily used - it's still a useful tool to enable
APBMers to give information of interest to all, and to ask questions or
instigate discussions pertinent to the community in general.

As for the "internet migration" comment, one should bear in mind that many
people still insist on a printed zine (for example quite a few whinged that
the excellent Psycopath was electronic only - personally I don't care as
long as zines remain zines as we know and love them - put together as
"little magazines" with the "personal touch").

Richard

P.S. I just remembered I was going to ask about Mission From God. What's the
latest ETA? Are more reviews needed?

Steve,

Many thanks. I presume they are on a web site somewhere. I suppose I could
look for it on Google but I am lazy.

Will you be at ManorCon? Will I be able to pick up a sample copy of Armistice
Day there for the Zine Bank?

Who else is going to ManorCon?

Subject: New En Garde! game
richard@...

Plugtime chaps!

En Garde games are pretty thin on the ground these days, but I am happy to
report that a new game is starting in Variable Pig. This is replacing Jim
Reader's old game which, I'm reliably informed started in 1642 (oh alright
then 1985). Roy Arnold, a long time player in Sun King and Small Furry
Undergrads is the GM, and he's got lots of new ideas to liven things up. The
following is copied from Variable Pig 78 (VP is free, though players are
encourged to donate a few stamps).

En Garde! 2 - GAMESTART August 1789
"What If - The French Revolution Failed?"

Two weeks have passed since M de Launay led a band of dissidents to storm
the Bastille. It did not take the King's forces to apprehend M de Launay and
the following week saw the much-expected trial of this much-hated enemy of
The State. The verdict was a bit of a foregone conclusion as it was an
overwhelming case for the prosecution. M de Launay was therefore convicted
on many counts of treason and will be taken to a place of public execution
in Week 4 of August. To celebrate this the King will be hosting a party at
his expense to which all citizens of Paris and their mistresses are most
welcome.

This is the new game of En Garde!, which is running as a subzine within
Variable Pig http://fp.sholing.f9.co.uk/Pig.htm. To join please contact the
Subzine Editor (Roy Arnold) - ROY ARNOLD, Flat 3, 28, SPRING HILL,
CROOKESMOOR, SHEFFIELD, S10 1ET
       Email: arnie@...

Details of game information available between zine turnaround periods
including new characters can be found at
