I don't actually have a list, but it's not hard to think of a hundred or so
examples. I know we associate portmanteau words particularly with Lewis
Carroll, who gave us e.g. GALUMPH (gallop + triumph) and CHORTLE (chuckle +
snort) but this technique of combining two existing words, in what linguists
call a blend, has become almost the standard way of creating neologisms.
Since interest has been expressed I thought it might make a good piece for
TLW, so will save the bulk for that, but just to be going on with here's a
few examples:

AFFLUENZA (affluence + influenza)
AVOISION (avoidance + evasion (of taxes))
BEEFALO (beef + buffalo)
BOHUNK (Bohemian + Hungarian)
BRUNCH (breakfast + lunch)
CONTRAIL (condensation trail)
DRICE (dry + ice)
EMOTICON (emotion + icon)
NETIZEN (Net + citizen)
PALIMONY (pal + alimony)
SEXERCISE (do we have a SEXPERT around who can tell us what this actually
involves?)
STAGFLATION (stagnant + inflation)
SMAZE (smoke + haze)
SQUARIAL (square + aerial)
ZEBRINNY (zebra + hinny)

And coming in the next list, courtesy of Chambers, is WHOLPHIN, the
offspring of a whale and dolphin.

Definitely in the latest Chambers and coming into the
forthcoming new word-list.

presuming this is a normal portmanteau

Maybe David Sutton has a collection of portmanteaus ?

Just had a small packet of crayfish with a chilli and lime mayo from Waitrose. Yum! Delicious! Not sure it's up to  the menus offered in a certain hotel in Malaysia, but this packet did come with a little label on it saying 'With a handy spork'.

I notice this word is not an accepted Scrabble word (where as, say, 'tigon' is)

It does appear in the Shorter Oxford  as a brand name with a capital S

I just wondered how many 'it's a cross between an x and a y' words are already acceptable in Scrabble, and how many more are  Collins planning for us   (perhaps including spork!)

Hi all,

Having a great time in Malaysia - thank you all so much again for helping me get
here!

Below is a link to an article on BBC Wales website regarding my story. It's
based on a phonecall from the hotel here and as always happens a few facts got
misheard / misunderstood / lost along the way. It does gets the point across
though...

And you can follow my progress at www.twitter.com/innerglee - just off to have
dinner then sitting down for a big update + photos...

Thanks again!

It's possible you can't remember failing to enter your player code on your
score sheets. It is the case, however, that on four or five occasions you
didn't remember to put in your player code, and I had to look it up. It's
one of the reasons that every couple of games a reminder went out to
everyone to fill in this information.

The player whose name got written on the fixture list (or possibly standings
list) failed, on one occasion, to write his name, player code, and score.
The TD felt that a not-so-gentle reminder was merited, but that player got
it right most or all of the rest of the time.

As for personal reminders, by the time I get round to entering the details
on any particular score sheet, those responsible for it have usually left
the playing room. So any warnings have to go out before the start of the
next game, and a general one seemed more appropriate.

There are now just SIX (6) single rooms remaining for the tournament. Book now or send me an e-mail to reserve one in order to avoid disappointment.

Looking at the Gloucester flyer in TLW I noticed that some of the info needs changing. Yes, I should have checked it before, but I didn't !!

The first is that we cannot guarantee full refunds for late cancellations made after March 5  (not April 30 as it says!!).

Secondly, my mobile number has changed. It is now 0782 481 2247.

And finally, I have several e-mail addresses, but the one printed on the flyer is valid, I will receive it.

Thanks,

I take it you have mixed up the names. I know the name you meant to write because that is the person whose name you had to write on the players list that was hung on the wall. Once again I adjudicated at the Winter Matchplay. The stress level was
higher than ever before, since we played 15 games, up from 13 last year and
11 when I was first dragooned into the adjudication business. Things
started a little late--we didn't get confirmation that all players were
present until five minutes before the scheduled start. I started printing
out the full fixture lists for the round-robin groups, but the printer
slower than I'd anticipated. Had I realised this in time I'd have printed a
conventional fixture list for round 1, and printed the detailed sheets once
the games were under way. We managed to make up most of the time, though,
somehow.

Games started at nominal 65 minute intervals, with no breaks at all except
for dinner, bed & breakfast, and lunch.. Some players can finish games in
under 50 minutes, so they got some gaps, but others--Malcolm Davis in
Division D was perhaps the worst offender--usually took well over an hour,
and furthermore seemingly without time penalties ever being imposed. In
fact, the game before dinner I watched Malcolm for the closing stages of his
game. He and his opponent's clocks still had about ten minutes left between
them well over an hour after the game had started. That means the clocks
had been stopped for over 20 minutes. I am informed that it's not uncommon
for some players to stop the clock while differences in the score are sorted
out, and it struck me that this is a system being abused.

Speaking of abuse, the players need to specify clearly which words they're
challenging, and at the end of the game fill in both players' names, code
numbers , and scores legibly. Most of the players managed to do this all,
or very nearly all, of the time. Some did not, despite several reminders.
Adekoyejo Adegbesan and Chrystal Rose were the worst offenders here.

In looking up challenges, there was only one known error. Nick Deller's
then opponent tried TEACAKE (or was it TEACAKES?) and DANE*. (This was
obviously wrong--Danish are breakfast pastries.) Nick challenged, and the
then adjudicator (Mike Willis) entered TEACAKE and DAN, resulting in the
challenge being sent back with a tick. (To be fair, the keyboards on the
laptops we were using didn't provide good tactile feedback--I'll need this
excuse myself later.) Nick failed to ask for a recheck, conceding with
typical good grace that this meant that the whole mess was entirely his
fault.

Matters weren't quite as rosy when it came to entering scores. In her game
against Maureen Chamberlain in round 6, Amy Byrne scored 435 points, entered
as 35 points and converting a win into a recorded loss. The matter was
brought to my attention after game 8, and corrected as far as possible. It
did mean that Amy had an easier opponent than she deserved in round 8, and
Maureen a tougher one, but they contrived respectively to lose and win
anyway so there was no great harm done. In another game, I entered the
spread instead of the loser's score (all those numbers tend to make one
cross-eyed), corrected before the next game started. And one score sheet
was handed in with clear (for once!) scores of 398-300 and a spread of 8,
and I took the scores at face value without noticing the discrepancy.
(There were quite a few score sheets handed in where the difference in the
stated scores didn't match the claimed spread, but I managed to catch the
rest, I think.)

In the final game of the first day, Mavis and Peter Ernest were drawn
together in every sense of the word. Very sweet!

As has been recorded elsewhere, Austin Shin, keeping his gentlemanly
instincts well in check, beat Joyce Cansfield 716-228. (Joyce said
afterwards that she'd had a bonus on her rack at the end, with at least two
places to play it, when Austin went out with a bonus of his own.) This is,
I think, a new record for the highest score in an ABSP tournament. The
spread of 488 probably constitutes some form of record for a game in which
both players know what they're doing.

At about 0100 on Sunday, I woke up with a severe cramp in my left calf. The
pain left me in shock, and I somewhat foolishly tried to make for the
bathroom lest the nausea result in any mess. I came to on the floor, and
didn't get very much sleep after that. No great harm done, but it provides
a reason, if not an excuse, for the slip in the standard of data entry for
day 2.

the games were under way.

No great harm done, but it provides
a reason, if not an excuse, for the slip in the standard of data entry for
day 2.

A set of twenty single-solution sevens and eights, structured as follows:

Words 1-6 Definitely everyday words that any literate person should know.
These may or may not be from the top 10000.
Words 7-12 Words which may not be everyday but have a fair chance of being
familiar to a well-educated person with a wide reading range. These will
usually be mid to lowish probability
Words 13-18 Words which are definitely not everyday but which are from the
top 10000 (alphagrams) by probability
Words 19-20 Two definitely obscure lower probability words.

Suggested total time allowance remains at 10 minutes, but of course take as
long as you like.

My (tentative) equation of score with ABSP rating:

6 correct 120
8 correct 140
12 correct 160
14 correct 180
19 correct 200

Last year we ran a fun afternoon for those who were in the hotel getting bored before WYSC - adults and youth
This involved team of two or three, who had to be from different countries, and was a combined trivia/ team Scrabble event.

If my memory is correct, the winning team consisted of a young Indian player, a young Philippines player, and a more mature Nigerian Player, and was all great fun!

It will happen again this year. This will be held at 2.30pm in the foyer area outside the ballroom where WYSC is happening.  Be there at 2.30pm sharp, and bring a pen. The winning team will win T-shirts, and everyone will enjoy meeting players from other countries in a social setting.
