Hi All,

It's now only 5 weeks to MasterCon - so time to start thinking about
getting organised.

The Youth Hostel is now full - or at least nearly full, depending on which
report you believe... If you want to stay there, it might be worth
contacting them, but do it now. And if you find it's full, don't be surprised.

The other option, is to stay at the Marriott Hotel. This is a recently
refurbished, four star hotel. The prices are 65.00 per room per night for a
single room, or 70.00 per room per night for a twin or double room. So if
you were intending to take a 2-person room at the Youth Hostel, the hotel
is actually cheaper!!! The hotel is about a mile from the convention.

If you want to stay at the hotel, you can book through Shaun Derrick.
shaun.derrick@... . This is a special rate that Shaun has secured, so
you cannot book directly with the hotel at these prices.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

David.

Subject: ManorCon 2006 - The UK's largest Board and card games convention
m.a.stretch@...
Send Email Send Email

ManorCon is a large board games convention that has been running since 1983.
The 200-250 attendees each year stay and play in a large, modern University
Hall of Residence with bar and canteen facilities and ample room for both
tournament and open gaming. There is free car parking available and the site
is also within easy reach of public transport and the City Centre of
Birmingham with its pubs, restaurants and nightlife.
ManorCon features a large array of different games and tournaments, from the
old favourites such as Acquire, 18xx, Diplomacy and United, to the
relatively recent German games like Die Siedler Von Catan, Euphrat & Tigris
and Puerto Rico. A few of the tournaments are formally organised, with games
starting at specific times, but most are played on an Ad Hoc basis - just
find a group of players to play, write the result down on a results sheet,
and put it in the appropriate envelope for scoring at the end of the
weekend.

If such competitive play is not your scene, there is always a large amount
of open gaming, from the serious games like Modern Art and Samurai, to the
less serious Perudo (always more fun after a couple of beers), and some
years there has even been a game of Cuddly Animals Diplomacy . Or
alternatively, play one of the games which has a tournament, but agree
beforehand that the game will not be entered.

So, if this sounds like a good idea, then why not come along and give it a
go, either just for the day to start with, or jump in the deep end and go
for the whole weekend. And if it sounds like fun, but you don't recognise
any of the games mentioned, then don't worry, people are always prepared to
teach beginners - how do you think we learned to play.

ManorCon is moving...
ManorCon has been held at the University of Birmingham every year since
ManorCon I
in 1983. There are many memories here - days gone by when there were over
350 people
playing games for the weekend, when it used to hold the largest Diplomacy
Tournament
in the world with over 100 players taking part every year. Days when the
second largest
tournament was the Acquire tournament, and when the most played train game
was
Railway Rivals. Days when some of our younger gamers weren't even born!
In the past few years, ManorCon has been moved around the different halls a
few times,
as it has dodged the renovations work that's been going on around us. But we've
stuck
with it, following the light at the end of the tunnel, when all the
renovations are
complete, the disruptions are no more, and we can have ManorCon in a rebuilt
modern
venue.
Unfortunately, it has now become clear that the light at the end of the
tunnel is just a
bloke with a torch. We can now see the result of the renovations, and it is
clear that they
are not designed to host a convention like ManorCon. So after 24 years, it's
time to
move.
After considering many venues, we have decided that ManorCon XXV will be
held on
20th - 23rd July 2007, at Stamford Hall at the University of Leicester.
There were many
things that made us choose this venue. We can have exclusive use of the hall
for the
whole weekend. We can play games and have meals in the same hall. We have
enough
rooms to be able to properly accommodate the Diplomacy, the Second Hand
Games
Sale, the Pop Quiz, the Treasure Hunt, etc, all in rooms suited to their
needs. We have a
bar, which can sell all the things we drink, including Real Ale. Leicester
University
already hosts a number of games conventions of various types, so they have a
good idea
what to expect. And on top of all that, their prices are lower than those
that we are
currently paying.
The site is also very easily accessible, both by car and public transport.
By car, it is 4
miles around the Leicester outer ring road from the M1. And by train, there
are direct
trains to Leicester from many locations, including London St Pancras and
Birmingham
New Street, and then there is a frequent direct bus service from the train
station to the
venue.
All-in-all, we are really looking forward to this move. After the problems
of last year, we
wish we could have moved there this year, but the time required to find a
new venue and
then to organise everything made this impossible. So we look forward to
seeing you at
ManorCon XXV in Leicester in 2007.

UK GAME EXPO 2007
"Everything about games"
2nd to 3rd June 2007
The Clarendon Suites
2 Stirling Road, Edgbaston,
Birmingham B16 9SB

We aim to be the only UK Games Convention to present all aspects of the gaming hobby under one roof:
• Wargaming
• Card games
• Board games
• RPGs
• Collectible Minis and Cards
• Lan-gaming and online gaming
The goal is to raise the profile of gaming as a hobby that will appeal not just to a minority of gamers but to families and the general public.

The intention is to create a show along the lines of the US and German Games Cons where families and gamers can come and play new games brought by games producers and also enjoy many forms of entertainment:
• Tournaments in many game systems
• Latest releases and games
• A large trade fair
• Computer LAN games and the latest in on-line gaming
• Fun radio controlled games
• Participation and demonstration wargames
• GAMEXPO-UK 2007 will be open to the public and well advertised.

The Venue
The venue is a high quality Conference Centre on the corner of Stirling Road and Hagley Road in Birmingham. It offers over 2000sq m of space in a prestigious location. There is a large car park and the venue has many hotels nearby. It is also close to the restaurants and clubs of Broad Street for those who want evening entertainment. And it is next door to Tolkien's TWO TOWERS.

Roleplaying
This section is in development. A Call of Cthulu Game, Arts Magica and HARP/ RMSS games are already organised. If you want to run an event contact us.

Boardgames
We hope to have a large boardgames component and are excited that this area may well be a  chance to develop an Essen/ Gencon Indy style event with Board game demos etc going on and tournament play.

Contacts
The organisers are enthusiastic gamers who will play any game. We are members of West Midland Games clubs and have previous experience of running wargames and general gaming shows.

The Mind Sports Olympiad has moved back to London for its tenth annual
event; this year, we're at the University of Westminster, directly
opposite Madam Tussaud's, about three minutes' walk from the Baker
Street station on the London Underground.

The event started today and goes on until Sunday 3rd September. There
are a wide variety of tournaments, including these ones most likely to
be of interest:

Acquire | Monday, August 28th | 09:30 to 17:30
Carcassonne | Sunday, September 3rd | 09:30 to 13:00
Diplomacy | Sunday, 27th August | 09:30 to 22:00
Lost Cities | Saturday, September 2nd | 09:30 to 13:00
Settlers of Catan | Saturday, September 2nd | 14:00 to 22:00
...plus all the usual suspects, like more chess than you can shake a
stick at and poker every night until the 2nd. We have some rather
handsome little trophies as prizes.

Entry fees are down on last year, but if you haven't booked already
then you'll need to pay a late fee surcharge. All the information you
need is at http://www.msoworld.com/ .

Enjoy!

UK Games Expo 2007

2nd - 3rd June 2007 Clarendon Suites, Hagely Road, Birmingham

Everything about Games

Monthly Newsletter Number 3

We are happy to say that plans proceed well towards UK Games Expo next
2nd and 3rd June. It is looking like we can put together a fun and
quite striking event here that should present to the public and
established gamers a range of types of gaming in a high quality venue.
Whether it is Roleplaying, Boardgames, Miniatures games, Collectible
card games or computer gaming that interests you or everyone should
find something to play and look at. Whether attendees come to just
have a fun time, play in organised events, try out new games or to buy
games we can offer all of this in an event that we hope will one day
grow into something special along the lines of the great European
events like Essen Speil or the US Origins and Gencon that see
thousands flocking to the host cities. Why should we not have
something here in the UK like that?

Many of the traders and companies will be bringing demo games for
attendees to sit down and play. UK Games Expo is about seeing a game,
playing a game and if you like it having the chance to buy a game and
take it home to play. Its about taking part.

News

A Saturday Evening Games room is now provided at the Thistle Hotel -
where we recommend overnight attendees stay. This room allows free
play of board games or RPgs and is included in delegates fees. So dont
just come for a day. Stay overnight and make it an event.

We are happy to announce that in a bid to present games to the public
we are developing a childrens and secondary school age boardgame
championship. This is linked to an after schools clubs initiative. If
you can get kids playing games early they and there families can
discover the fun - and even the educational value of gaming. We are
soon to meet with representatives of Birmingham Leisiure to present
the plans and the vision we have to them.

Big name traders that have joined the list of traders at UK Games Expo
include:

Black Industries demonstrating before its release a new Roleplaying
Game - the long awaited Warhammer 40K RPG tie in "Dark Heresy" and
also their very popular RPG Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying.

Sabretooth Games bringing the Collectible Card Game UFS

Mongoose bringing Starship troopers and Runequest and others.

Privateer Press bringing Warmachines and Hordes.

Wizkids are highly interested in attendance at this stage. Heroclix is
5 years old the weekend of the Expo so its possible a special tie in
may be arranged.

Centralan UK are attending and will have first person shooter games
and console games to sit down and play.

We are exploring Esdevium attending and demoing Supersize versions of
popular games such as Days of Wonder's Shadows over Camelot and Pirate
Cover or other games.

Dear all,

Just a quick note to confirm that RamsdenCon will not be taking place
in February over the half-term period as Ramsden Heath School is
undergoing substantial refurbishment.

Annie is still hoping to hold a con at the school some time this year
but nothing has been determined yet.

John Harrington

Hi all, I’m wanting to introduce you to a new, large gaming show in Manchester.

Are you game?

On the 23rd and 24th of June the largest organised play event in Europe is coming to Manchester. If you’re game, you’ll be there playing against some of the best players in Europe for some of the best prizes. Win trips to Pro Tour Valencia, GenCon Indy, a place at the D&D Miniatures World Championships, flights and entry to the Vs Pro Circuit, a seat at the Magic UK Nationals 2007 or the cold, hard cash of the Dreamblade 1K.

With over a thousand gaming seats each day, whatever your game is you’ll find it at Game. The following are just a brief selection of the major events on offer - visit the www.game07.eu website often to see what new and fun events are being planned!

Magic the Gathering™ Pro Tour Qualifier

Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures European Championship, 200pt, sealed and 500pt

Dreamblade $1k

Last, Last Chance, UK National Qualifier for Magic the Gathering™

European Open Tournaments in Star Wars Minis, Starship Battles & Axis and Allies

VS Master Challenge

Warcraft TCG Regionals Qualifier

Yu-Gi-Oh King of Games

Bloodbowl Tritex Challenge

Pokemon

Legend of the 5 Rings Storyline Event

Confrontation and AT43

Warmachine and Hordes

Of Course there’ll be Board Games

Esdevium games will be running a host of tables with their board games to introduce new games to new and seasoned players. There’ll be new releases and old favourites. Even better, there’s a cool voucher scheme, should you like to buy one of them from the traders.

EberCon

If you’re into roleplaying, check out EberCon – the Con within a Con – for the very best in RPGA Organised Play featuring guest Eberron artists, writers and GM’s including Xendri’ik Expeditions supremo Brian ‘Kiddoc’ Mackey’s 3D Dungeon Delve, where the more monsters you beat the more loot you win.

But that’s not all!

Game 07 Exhibitors include: Wizards of the Coast, Upperdeck, top UK Distributor Esdevium Games, Sabertooth, Black Library, Privateer Press, as well as top games shops such as Fanboy 3, Patriot Games, Eclectic Games and online singles traders Tritex and House Atreides. More and more exhibitors are signing up every day to bring you the very best organised play events ever in one place across one weekend.

But even that’s not all!

Our innovative demo voucher scheme allows you to try before you buy and then save a chunk of change from our participating traders.

Visit www.game07.eu and register for entry tickets, tournaments, food and hotels. You can also pre-order limited edition Game 07 t-shirts for collection at the door!

And if that wasn’t enough…

Those who are game will also be able to see LARP in action, Fancy dress, meet fantasy authors, and attend a fantasy/SF film festival and much more…

We’re Game.

Are you?

Cheers

Peter

SoRCon - Son Of Ramsdencon Con

Following the sad loss of the Ramsdencon venue due to redevelopment a
new con is born in it's place with the first gathering being the
weekend of 22nd to 24th February 2008 in Essex near Colchester.

We hope to retain as much of the Ramsdencon feel as is possible given
the enforced changes.

Booking is now open and the early bird registration fees are available
until the end of August.

Please see http://www.sorcon.co.uk/ and let us know if any queries -
offers to help are welcome too!!

Many thanks,
Hope to see you

I would like to let everyone know that I am holding a games day (Board games) at The Business Enterprise Centre, Deedmore Road, Coventry CV2 2AA on Saturday 21 April.

games day

The idea is to promote board games to this community which is a 'regeneration area' of the city. I am advertising it in the area but I suspect that apathy will rule and it will end up being a group of the usual suspects. 5/6 confirmed they will be coming along. Any more would be welcome.

Find it on Multimap. Just over

a mile or so from Junction 2 of the M6. Take the A4600 towards Coventry

(not the A46 which shows Coventry Airport) - stright on at the first roundabout - right at the second roundabout {by MacDonalds} into Wigston Road - at the end of Wigston Road turn right then immediately left into Ringwood Highway - at the end of Ringwood Highway, turn left into Deedmore Road - the Business Centre is just past the little island hump in the road on the left hand side.

Bring something to eat as there isn't anything provided. There will probably be tea and coffee though.

Regards,

Shaun Derrick
