MasterCon 2005 is this weekend - 18th to 20th March 2005.

Unfortunately, Eve Smith has been seriously ill in the last week. She is
now out of hospital, but has been ordered to take two weeks complete rest,
so neither she nor Keith will be there. Therefore I am taking over the
running of the convention for this year. This has come as rather a surprise
to me, as I'm sure it will be to you, so please be nice to me, make things
as easy as you can, don't get too upset if things don't quite go perfectly,
etc.

Other than that, the convention will be the same as it has been in the last
couple of years - same location, same games (plus maybe some new ones),
same friendly atmosphere, etc.

If you are coming along, and you have not told Keith and Eve, please let me
know a.s.a.p.

If you want a room in the hotel, please book it yourself. If you have any
problems doing this, then please let me know, and I'll do what I can to help.

Hi All,

ManorCon is fast approaching - this year, it's the 15th to the 18th July
2005. This year, it's back to Shackleton Hall at Birmingham University. The
hall's been refurbished last summer, so it's all looking shiny and new inside.

The deadline for booking is now just over a week away. Bookings must be
received by June 17th - otherwise you'll have to book on the door and pay
the higher price. If you need a booking form, it can be downloaded from the
ManorCon website, http://www.diplom.org/manorcon

Meanwhile, if anybody is organising another games convention in the next 12
months, then please let me know, so we can include it on the Upcoming
Conventions page of the ManorCon Programme Booklet. And if you'd like to
take out a full page advert in the Programme Booklet, please contact me for
details - I need to know a.s.a.p., and will need to have the advert by the
end of the month.

I'm just passing this info on - contact Pete for me info (details below).

Frome, Somerset, UK, July 10th 2005
£1

This years Frome GamesCon will be taking place at the Cheese
and Grain Building in the Market Yard in Frome on Sunday
July 10th from 10am 'till 5pm.

We have lots of free games to play, tournaments,
competitions, talks, displays, prizes, CCG's, RPG's, fantasy
artwork, manufacturers, games for sale, games authors,
miniatures, wargames, free parking, well you know the sort
of thing and of course there will be food and drink
available all day!

The main attraction of course is to share space with like
minded people, play games, meet new friends and have fun!

We have also commissioned a specially made real ale for the
event called appropriately enough "WassAle".

We have 30 plus explainers helping out and the whole event
should be a bit of fun.

Frome is in Somerset in the UK between Bath and Glastonbury
and this event is one of the very few in the area during
2005. Various clubs will also be present, so this is your
chance to come to Somerset and have fun!

We are holding the event as part of the Frome Festival
(www.fromefestival.co.uk) to give you more reasons for
travelling to Somerset to see us. Tthere are over 140
events spread over ten days, so why not make a weekend of it
and see Van Morrison the night before or stay on at the
venue after the GamesCon and see Arthur Lee and Love.

The Frome GamesCon is being jointly run by Wassail Games and
Iksentrik Models, both of Frome. For further information on
the GamesCon, please call Pete on 01373 469946 or use the

Hi, the Mind Sports Olympiad is again in Manchester this year, and
(fingers crossed) we're hopeful for more people to turn up to MSOCON,
the bit for friendly people who play the sort of boardgames you like
to play (unless you play Diplomacy, in which case you want the
previous weekend.)

This year we've got the usual tournaments, plus Markus Welbourne of
JKLM Games running a JKLM tournament, and a Victor Ludorum,
administered in a comatose fashion by Geoff Brown. It's all on the
usual August bank holiday weekend, ie the end of August.

Cost is £20+£10 late fee, which covers Friday morning to Monday early
evening.

I'll try to put the flyer up in the files section here, but at any
rate you can book online at

http://www.msoworld.com/2005/msocon.html

See

http://www.msoworld.com/2005/schedule.html

for more tournament details and start times.

Persons who can bring copies of any of the tournament games
(especially Puerto Rico, Carcassonne, Lost Cities...) are especially
welcome.

thanks,

Martin Burroughs

The 2006 European Diplomacy Championship dates are now confirmed.

Shaun and I went to see the place today and booked the venue & dates. I will
update the EDC website (address above) with more details in a week or two, which
will feed back to everyone who registered on the website.

For now we have the following which is 100% confirmed:

Dates: 3-5 March 2006 (Opens 2pm Friday 3rd, Finish Sunday 5th at 6pm)
(you may come earlier or stay later, but this is the
time we have the convention room booked for).

Location: Lee Valley Youth Centre, Cheshunt.
(Cheshunt is about 15 minutes by train half way between Stanstead Airport &
London Liverpool Street station, on the main train line between these two
locations. The venue is ONE MINUTE walk from the station)

The cost will be (to be confirmed) £27.50 for the Saturday night and £20 for the
Friday. The £27.50 gets bed, breakfast and evening meal. The £20 gets B&B only.
Prices are not 100% confirmed because there will be new rates next year, not
expected to increase too much.

The rooms are all shared dormitories with 4-8 beds in each. There are some dorms
with just two beds but these will cost a bit more. There are hotels near by, if
anyone wants a higher standard of accommodation.

There are five "lodges" and up to 25 people can stay in each (i.e., each lodge
has 5 or 6 dormitories). Each lodge has it's own communal area to cook & play
games all night if you want.

The main area we will play games in will cost £520. Some of this will be
recovered from the English players (£12 each) the rest (and the cost of
trophies) will come out of my pocket, so there may be a "donations bucket" to
those generous few amongst you.

The venue has an on-site bar and several pubs near by. The town (a short
walk) has high street shops where you can stock up on goodies etc.

This is as close as we can get to a good airport for foreign visitors, so we
expect all you foreign players to come.

The important thing to foreign players is to BOOK YOUR FLIGHTS EARLY to get
cheap deals. If you book now you may get a flight for just £5!

Also (when more details are announced) you will need to BOOK YOUR ROOMS early
too; they have 125 beds but will offer these to other visitors too.
Rooms will need to be booked by players themselves - The website will have more
details in a couple of weeks.

Please register at the website at the top of this email to receive future
updates, and tell your friends too.

Catch you soon
Toby

MASTERCON XIII
Hosting EuroDipCon XIV
3rd - 5th March 2006
Lee Valley Youth Hostel, Windmill Lane, Cheshunt, Herts
http://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/hostelpages/861.html

PROGRESS REPORT #1 incorporating the REGISTRATION FORM

MasterCon is on the move once again. Keith and Eve Smith have stepped down from
organizing the event after 4 years. This MasterCon is unique in that it will be
in a new location and will also be hosting EuroDipCon - the first time since
1998! The main organizer and Tournament Director for the Diplomacy will be Toby
Harris. Toby needs no introduction, he is a larger than life character who has
been in the hobby for about 20 years. In fact he was the winner of EuroDipCon
the last time it was hosted by MasterCon.
I am Shaun Derrick, previous organizer of MasterCon from 1994 until 2001 and I
am coming out of 'retirement' just for this particular convention. I will be
taking a background role, having found a location for the event.
David Norman will be helping with the Diplomacy scoring. With his considerable
experience in this field, things will, I am sure, run very smoothly.
Emeric Miszti is our website guru and he will be monitoring that side of things.
Of course, MasterCon isn't just Diplomacy. There will be lots of casual gaming
and an 18xx tournament which has been a mainstay of MasterCon since the
convention began.

ACCOMMODATION

There are two main options for accommodation, the hostel accommodation and the
Marriott hotel. There may be local Bed and Breakfast options, but you would need
to arrange these directly if you wish to pursue that option.

The Lee Valley Youth Hostel has been completely refurbished and re-opened last
year. For those of you who consider Youth Hostels to be shabby claustrophobic
shacks, then you will be very pleasantly surprised how modern this one is. The
rooms are all en-suite and have 2,4,6 or 8 beds in each. They are very spacious
rooms with each lodge holding approximately 24 beds and have kitchen facilities
and enough space for gaming away from the main gaming room if you wanted it. It
is classed as a 5 Star Youth Hostel and is certainly much better than I expected
it to be. Take a look at the website above.

The gaming room is in the main block with the restaurants, snack bar, shop and
'Games room' (This has a table football game). It also has a balcony for those
who want to get some fresh air or do their diplomacy outside. Smoking is not
permitted in any of the buildings so smokers will have to go onto the balcony of
the gaming room or outside the building.

Access is very easy. By car it is just half a mile from the main street through
Cheshunt town centre down Windmill Lane, plenty of parking available free of
charge. By train you can alight at Cheshunt station which is just across the
level crossing - literally a one minute walk! By air Stansted would be ideal as
there is a direct regular rail service from Stansted to Cheshunt station. More
specific details on train times and directions will follow in a future progress
report.

Being close to London there may be a number of people who won't need
accommodation, but will merely commute to/from the venue. There is a direct
service from Liverpool Street station to Cheshunt.

The Marriott Hotel is about 2 miles away from the venue. This is for those who
want rather more luxury than the Hostel. The hotel is on the junction of the A10
and A1170 at Turnford, the northern end of Cheshunt.

ACCOMMODATION RATES

The Lee Valley Youth Hostel
1 bed in a 4,6 or 8 bedded room - £20.00 for Friday 03 March
					 £27.50 for Saturday 04 March
					 £20.00 for Sunday 05 March

1 bed in a 2 bedded room - £40.00 for Friday 03 March
					 £47.50 for Saturday 04 March
					 £40.00 for Sunday 05 March

The rate for Friday and Sunday includes breakfast. The rate for Saturday
includes breakfast and dinner. The Saturday rate is a mandatory Dinner, Bed and
Breakfast rate, whether you take the Dinner or not.
All hostel bookings must be booked direct with the Youth Hostel.

Email: leevalley@..., www.yha.org.uk

Please mention that you are part of EDC or European Diplomacy Championship so
that they can apply the correct rate.

The Marriott Cheshunt Hotel
The hotel will hold some rooms off for me but I don't think this is necessary at
this stage.

The rate is £80.00 per night for a room whether there are 1 or 2 people in the
room. This rate includes breakfast and VAT. If anyone wants the rate for 3
people in a room, let me know.
However, if you are certain that you want to stay at this hotel and can book in
advance, there is currently a web fare of £76.00 for up to 2 people in the room
B&B, but you have to pay in advance and the rate is non-refundable. If you want
to book this hotel not using the web fare, then please contact me. I would
advise anyone even thinking of booking the hotel to let me know so that I can
calculate the number of rooms required.
If there are any Marriott card holders out there, you may get a better rate by
contacting the hotel direct.

The hotel details are...

ANY OTHER BUSINESS
Sponsorship!
This would be nice, of course, but efforts so far have proved fruitless. Tesco
have their head office in Cheshunt and I have tried to get some money out of
them - result = no response!! Does anyone know how to get to the right people in
this organization?

Prizes!
There will be prizes for the top 7 in the Diplomacy and a trophy for the 18xx
winner. Certificates will be awarded for Best Countries. If any more tournaments
are arranged, there will be a trophy for it. If anyone can supply some game
prizes... ?

Games Stand!
Dave Lunn from Gameseb will be present at MasterCon. He will be offering a
discount of 10% on all purchases throughout the weekend.

WDC had 85 players.
EDC had 70 players.

For its 20th Birthday as many players as the total of those 2 together are
expected for the French NDC the next 29th & 30th of October. And not the least
of the players which should include the 4 of the 5 last World champion plus
many more World Class players among which most of the contenders of the GP
2005.

What a better way to celebrate this birthday but to join Paris City center again
? Especially when you know it is hardly 2h40 from London City Center in
Eurostar.
You can also expect some surprises in and outside the convention. Paradox, the
new editor of the PC version of Diplomacy will be there, and it will be
possible to test the game during the convention.

So come and join a week-end of partying or serious competition : whatever you
are after we have it for you in Paris, city of light.

Though we expect that the following website :

should answer most of your questions, do not hesitate to join the organisation
at mailto:contact_frenchNDC@yahoogroups.com if you need to know more.

Looking forward to meet you all friends, there.

November approaches, and so does Midcon 2005.

Taking place at its usual venue of the Birmingham City Thistle Hotel, Midcon
offers the opportunity to play board games with like-minded folk, play in
the National Diplomacy Championship, participate in quizzes, or generally
hang-around at the bar.

Room rates are £47 per person per night for a single room or £37.50 per
person per night for a twin or double, breakfast inclusive.

The convention fee is £15 before 1st November, and £18 thereafter. We have
also introduced a daily rate for this year.

An electronic booking form and further details may be found at
www.midcon.org.uk. There are still a number of rooms left, but bookings are
going well, so don't leave it too late to register, or else you may have to
stay elsewhere! And remember, the Midcon committee does not accept bookings
after the 1st November - you have to go directly to the hotel, who will not
guarantee convention rates after that time.

We hope to see you there.

Attn MidCon attendees,

Following my 'Conquista Hispania' playtests of last year, I would like
some players to do likewise with my new game: History of the

for each World Cup so that a complete history can be played over a

boards and should have 1998 ready shortly. I have only playtested it
solo and it 'seems' to work quite well, despite me continually
changing my mind on how to utilise the Defence cards! I expect the
1930 version of the game to take about 1 hour once the rules have been
explained. The 2002 version will probably take 2.5 hours.

Intrigued? Well, I will see you at MidCon...

Hi All,

It's now only 5 weeks to MasterCon - so time to start thinking about
getting organised.

The Youth Hostel is now full - or at least nearly full, depending on which
report you believe... If you want to stay there, it might be worth
contacting them, but do it now. And if you find it's full, don't be surprised.

The other option, is to stay at the Marriott Hotel. This is a recently
refurbished, four star hotel. The prices are 65.00 per room per night for a
single room, or 70.00 per room per night for a twin or double room. So if
you were intending to take a 2-person room at the Youth Hostel, the hotel
is actually cheaper!!! The hotel is about a mile from the convention.

If you want to stay at the hotel, you can book through Shaun Derrick.
shaun.derrick@... . This is a special rate that Shaun has secured, so
you cannot book directly with the hotel at these prices.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

David.

Subject: ManorCon 2006 - The UK's largest Board and card games convention
m.a.stretch@...
Send Email Send Email

ManorCon is a large board games convention that has been running since 1983.
The 200-250 attendees each year stay and play in a large, modern University
Hall of Residence with bar and canteen facilities and ample room for both
tournament and open gaming. There is free car parking available and the site
is also within easy reach of public transport and the City Centre of
Birmingham with its pubs, restaurants and nightlife.
ManorCon features a large array of different games and tournaments, from the
old favourites such as Acquire, 18xx, Diplomacy and United, to the
relatively recent German games like Die Siedler Von Catan, Euphrat & Tigris
and Puerto Rico. A few of the tournaments are formally organised, with games
starting at specific times, but most are played on an Ad Hoc basis - just
find a group of players to play, write the result down on a results sheet,
and put it in the appropriate envelope for scoring at the end of the
weekend.

If such competitive play is not your scene, there is always a large amount
of open gaming, from the serious games like Modern Art and Samurai, to the
less serious Perudo (always more fun after a couple of beers), and some
years there has even been a game of Cuddly Animals Diplomacy . Or
alternatively, play one of the games which has a tournament, but agree
beforehand that the game will not be entered.

So, if this sounds like a good idea, then why not come along and give it a
go, either just for the day to start with, or jump in the deep end and go
for the whole weekend. And if it sounds like fun, but you don't recognise
any of the games mentioned, then don't worry, people are always prepared to
teach beginners - how do you think we learned to play.

ManorCon is moving...
ManorCon has been held at the University of Birmingham every year since
ManorCon I
in 1983. There are many memories here - days gone by when there were over
350 people
playing games for the weekend, when it used to hold the largest Diplomacy
Tournament
in the world with over 100 players taking part every year. Days when the
second largest
tournament was the Acquire tournament, and when the most played train game
was
Railway Rivals. Days when some of our younger gamers weren't even born!
In the past few years, ManorCon has been moved around the different halls a
few times,
as it has dodged the renovations work that's been going on around us. But we've
stuck
with it, following the light at the end of the tunnel, when all the
renovations are
complete, the disruptions are no more, and we can have ManorCon in a rebuilt
modern
venue.
Unfortunately, it has now become clear that the light at the end of the
tunnel is just a
bloke with a torch. We can now see the result of the renovations, and it is
clear that they
are not designed to host a convention like ManorCon. So after 24 years, it's
time to
move.
After considering many venues, we have decided that ManorCon XXV will be
held on
20th - 23rd July 2007, at Stamford Hall at the University of Leicester.
There were many
things that made us choose this venue. We can have exclusive use of the hall
for the
whole weekend. We can play games and have meals in the same hall. We have
enough
rooms to be able to properly accommodate the Diplomacy, the Second Hand
Games
Sale, the Pop Quiz, the Treasure Hunt, etc, all in rooms suited to their
needs. We have a
bar, which can sell all the things we drink, including Real Ale. Leicester
University
already hosts a number of games conventions of various types, so they have a
good idea
what to expect. And on top of all that, their prices are lower than those
that we are
currently paying.
The site is also very easily accessible, both by car and public transport.
By car, it is 4
miles around the Leicester outer ring road from the M1. And by train, there
are direct
trains to Leicester from many locations, including London St Pancras and
Birmingham
New Street, and then there is a frequent direct bus service from the train
station to the
venue.
All-in-all, we are really looking forward to this move. After the problems
of last year, we
wish we could have moved there this year, but the time required to find a
new venue and
then to organise everything made this impossible. So we look forward to
seeing you at
ManorCon XXV in Leicester in 2007.
