This was something I'd considered but I wondered how strong the
magnetism was and if the foamcore was up to being repeatedly pried
from the table.

I've just thought of something: Maybe I could stick sand paper to the
underside of the tokens just to give them a bit more purchase on the
cloth playing surface. That might work and I'm sure I've got some
lying around somewhere. I will look on ebay for the magnetic stuff
anyway. Thanks for that.

Foamcore is probably going to be too light. As soon as the table gets knocked into your ships will be all over the place. I'm not sure what you could use...
