I was reading a friend's blog and found out about a court case where a man
is facing up to 15 years of jail time for buying/possessing MANGA! No, this
isn't a joke. And the case sets a dangerous precedent. Read up on it yourself,
and consider writing or taking a stance on this.
The argument is that Manga characters look like they could be under 18. Um,
the art focuses on simple lines and Japanese people don't tend to have as much
body hair as Americans nor as strongly curved forms. We are dealing with
another culture after all. But if we let this issue sit, it may mean anyone who
watches anime or reads manga where there is any nudity, which happens in many of
them, especially in comedy-romance stories.
And if it succeeds here what is next? Comic books? Television? Calvin
Klein ads? Remember, it isn't that there is nudity or sex portrayed with
adults, it's whether or not they look over 18. A lot of models try to look
younger, so will we all go to jail for seeing an ad in Vogue or Maxim? How
about billboards? Where does it actually end? That is up to us and where we
say "enough is enough". Defend your rights or you won't have them, guaranteed.
Be well out there! And special thanks to Max for pointing this case out for
attention.

...just a few years ago, the Supreme Court struck down a federal law that
"extended the prohibition against child pornography to images that . . . were
produced without using any real children.":

means any character that appears as if they might be under 18.. AKA pretty much
all anime.)
