I see you have answers to your questions about the other ships, but
not about the Crown of Corellon. The Crown of Corellon is not a ship
per se. It is a base, composed of 7 elven armada ships that have been
bound together and the wings grew together. So, it is 700 tons for
that alone, and as such, could not be moved by any standard
spelljamming helm (except for an Ultimate Helm, but those are not
exactly standard). Then, there is the tower built in the middle of
the whole thing, which leads me to believe the Crown of Corellon is
actually larger than 700 tons. In my old spelljammer campaign, I
thought 1000 tons was a nice round figure to use.

Because of the way the ships are laid out, the Crown does not really
have a keel or beam, in my opinion. But if you must have those
measurements, just look at the map of it in Space Lairs and use the
diameter for both. For the 'Save As', I'd go with whatever the Armada
ships use. (Sorry but I don't have ready access to my books just now.)

I hope I was of some help at least.

Zirra

Hey all,
By way of introduction, my name is Josh and I'm currently running a
d20 spelljammer campaign, using some mesh of the old 2ed boxed set the
spider moon setting and I'm going to throw in the vehicle combat rules
from the Arm's and Equipment Guide.

However what I was wondering was this; I'm looking at the Planetary
Display in the 2ed boxed set and trying to set out some spheres and
the grid is not labeled, and I can't find a reference to it in the
books. So basically the question is how far apart are the tracks like
if 1 planet is on inner track 2 and another is on outer track 5 how
far apart are they?

Hello Everyone,

My name is Joshua Crocker thanks for having me on your list. I actually have a
question I was hoping someone could clarify. In the original spelljammer boxed
set there is a Planetary Display grid, the problem is I can't find a reference
for how much each distance each ring represents, I was hoping someone could tell
me. thanks.

Josh

Going by memory alone, I think you have to have a table of their
distances apart just like the one that came with the base set laying out
the our real Sol system. The tracks just show the relative positions of
planets. You find the same problem with putting a "real" scale on our
own solar system. If you fit pluto on the edges of the page the next
circle would be in the center the size of the head of a pin with the
sun and all the rest. So the solar system is almost never drawn to
scale. I saw on at a planetarium but it wrapped around the entire
building and still was not true to scale. So I think, as I remember, the
tracks are not on any "set" distance scale. They just show relative
orbit order. You need a separate chart denoting the actual days jamming
distance between each planet.

This is space. It's sometimes called the final frontier. (Except that of
course you can't have a *final* frontier, because there'd be nothing for it
to be a frontier *to*, but as frontiers go, it's pretty penultimate...)

Hmm, that's an interesting question. Do you have the War Captian's
companion boxed set? I think that would be the most likely official
source, but I doubt it.

Try this subpage of Beyond the Moons.

http://spelljammer.org/npcs/

It has information on NPCs, Ships & Crews, & Organizations. You might
have to do some major reading, however. :)

Sorry about taking so long to reply. I got lost in the flow & haven't
had a chance to check in here until now. (We'll be getting a new
navigator before the next voyage.)

Anyway, each block on the inner grid is supposed to be 20 million miles
and a space on the outer track is 400 million miles. (Reference:
Concordance of Arcane Space, page 71, first colum of text)

I hope this helps, even if it was rather late.

It's been almost two years since I wrapped up my last Spelljammer
campaign, and it's time to dust off my books. I thought I'd throw
this out and see if there's enough interest still out there.

Would anyone be interested in signing on for a small Spelljammer play

start, using AD&D 2nd edition rules.

Anyone? :)

Matt,

I would certainly be interested. It's a fun genre, and one that I
think works comparatively well in a PBEM environment.

My character concept is an elven mage (maybe fighter/mage or
rogue/mage). He's a veteran of the Elvish Navy, now working on
civilian ships. He's an accomplished spelljammer, skilled in
navigation and other shipboard tasks, as well as working a helm.

I've been listening to the Patrick O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin books on CD
(Not sure if you're familiar with them) and I have in mind one of the
competant officers from those, or maybe a bit of Horatio Hornblower.

I know it's a bit straight-laced, but I figure it's good to start with
the basics. Besides, I have a lot of fun with the shipboard stuff.

Please let me know what you think and how you want to go about with
character generation.

Cheers,
Brian

I like the sound of him so far. Depending on the level we decide to
start at, I might have you scale back his prior experience with the
Navy, but otherwise sounds like a great start.

As to character creation, we'll be using standard 2nd edition AD&D
rules. You have 80pts to split between your stats, prior to racial
bonuses. Any reasonable non-magical equipment is allowable. Most
class/kits are also acceptable, though I reserve the right to veto
anything too exotic. As we are going a little old-school, if you
don't have access to a specific resource or rule, let me know. I
should be able to help.

I've heard from one other person so far (Chris, these rules apply to
you as well)...so we're moving forward with this game. I'd like to
know what type of game you two prefer and where you'd like this one
to go. I have a starting game in mind, but as there are just the
few of us, I'd like to make sure everyone is happy right off the bat.

We can give him as much or as little experience there as you like. At the
very least, it will justify the spelljamming skills I want to give him.

I figure he served during whatever the most recent war was, and when it was
over, and the Elven navy contracted a bit, he was beached and had to find a
new way to make a living.

Okay, I'll have to dust off my old 2ed stuff. It's been a while, but I think
I'll manage. Any thoughts about what level you want to start at?

I've heard from one other person so far (Chris, these rules apply to
> you as well)...so we're moving forward with this game. I'd like to

Well, obviously it should involve a spelljamming ship. ;-)

Seriously, it would be nice if we had some control over our destiny, which
means (at least at some point) having a ship we have at least some say over.
Not that we necessarily have to start with one (though I wouldn't say no).
But ship captains have so much say over things that being under an NPC
captain for long might be a bit of a drag on action (e.g., always having to
ask permission to do things, or even to decide where to go.)

I don't mind if there's a merchant aspect about it (transporting cargoes
between worlds). That's a fun part of the genre. But I'd prefer if it didn't
involve a whole lot of bookkeeping. Somehow that seems too much like work.

Beyond that, so long as it hits some of the hallmarks of a Spelljammer game,
I'll be happy.

Cheers,
Brian

The most recent wars were with the Vodoni. I'll send out more
details once I've cleaned up some notes of mine, but the short
version is that the Elven Navy suffered heavy losses during the war
with Vulkaran, in part due to decisions made by the Council of
Admirals. (Think some of the choices made by Allied commanders
during the early years of WWI).

More than one young elven officer has left the Navy, following the
recent conflict.

I don't have my books available at work, but I think characters will
start at 6th level. High enough to justify some history...and stay
alive in Wildspace if we only have a two- or three-person group.

Assume 3rd/3rd for a multi-classed character.

I'll see what I can do. ;)

I generally don't like the idea of giving PCs a ship to start, but I
agree with you that they shouldn't be chained to an NPC throughout
their career. I'll keep my thoughts to myself at the moment (gotta
have a few surprises) but we're on the same page, so don't worry.

Generally, I'll give you only as much bookkeeping as you want.

Plan to begin the game on the Rock of Bral (hallmark #1). The Rock
exists in a small asteroid cluster located in Realmspace...NOT the
Tears of Selune. Again, I'll post a few notes early tomorrow. The
background for your character should leave off with him on Bral.

More shortly,

Matt

Thought I'd drop a little background on here. If nothing else, it
beats starting a blog. ;)

My name's Matthew Cross. I've been playing D&D in one form or
another since the red-boxed Basic set...which puts me firmly in
the "old" category. I latched onto Spelljammer when the original set
first came out, and kicked off what ended up being an eight-year
campaign that lasted through highschool, college, and life beyond.

Recently I've rediscovered my notes from the campaign and realized I
was missing Wildspace. Digging around on the net, it seemed both
Spelljammer games and PBeMs were pretty scarce...so I thought I'd do
something about it.

So, unless there is an objection, I'll start posting our game to the
list once we're running. Anyone with an interest, feel free to drop
me a line privately or here on the board.

I'm looking forward to getting back into it. :D

Hi Flits3,

That was me. Your referring to the Spider Moon deckplans, right? I'm
glad you don't mind them being available here.

Anyway, thanks for stopping by and saying 'hi'. The board has a good
number of members but "actual posts" don't happen every day. :)

I guess most join for the files section. That reminds me, I have
something for that section that I still need to upload. It's a compiled
PDF file of various smaller PDFs that were on someone's sight.

I forget exactly who's site, but it could have been yours. The PDF file
details various Spelljammer monsters (v.3.0). Let me know if it was you
who did the individual PDFS, okay?

Cheers!

Greetings and felicitations,

Just in case anyone out there wants to take up playing in the
spelljammer setting but they dont know where to get the rules, try paizo
(they currently publish both dungeon magazine and dragon magazine). The
following link takes you directly to where you can buy (they're the
cheapest I've found) .pdf files of the original books and boxed sets.
The link is

http://paizo.com/store/downloads/wizardsOfTheCoast/aDAndD2/spelljammer
<http://paizo.com/store/downloads/wizardsOfTheCoast/aDAndD2/spelljammer>

Also there is a lot of useful material that you can download for free
from wizards of the coast. This includes both all the official
deckplans and the stardock module. The link below takes you directly to
the download area for the old tsr stuff that you can download for free.

Hope this is of use.

Byeee.

Just checking it out and decided to join. I play with a couple of
real hardcore players. We play 3.5 in the old Red Steel world. My
Cayma Sor14/Acm5 is a hoot! (He's a foot tall lizard creature.)
Anyway, It's fallen on me to DM a little relief side-game. It
started in Waterdeep and will go Spelljammer, using gestalt
characters from Unearthed Arcana. I want to get them up to about
5th before goin into space. So far, they've been able to handle CRs
about 2 over level. The sorcerer/monk is a true badass! THe
Archivist/Paladin handles about all I can throw.
They'll be joining as new recruits to the Waterdhavian Spelljammer
contingent to the navy. All very hush-hush, you know. What little
presence WD had in space disappeared in the godswar, so they're on
the ground floor, more or less, as a new special-ops unit
(Jahmarines).
I only recently started looking at the spelljammer sites, and
backordered the famous polyhedron#151. Cool!
Cool as the prestige classes are, the players wanted to do other
things, so they'll be on a hammership captained by Star-eyed Stella;
Elf Female, Ftr4/Stellar Corsair3//Rog5/Wiz1/ArcaneArcher1.
The ship is piloted/navigated by Ruby; Human Female
Scout5/PlanetaryExplorer1//Wiz5/SpelljammerAce1. These ladies have
decent stats, but stay "offscreen" early on. There's a pretty cool
hadozee and a human cleric/bard on board, too. The rest are mostly
expert/warrior ballista-fodder.
I kept the 2e notion of only spellcasters being able to pilot a
ship, and using up all their spells to do so. Just doing it at all
is something of a priviledge, says I. SR is still controlled by the
level of the pilot.
Having two classes takes the sting out of it. Ruby loses all her
wizard spells, but when she's not jamming she's still a scout, thus
a competent combatant in a pinch. And, yes you lose ALL spells, Mr.
Wiz/Clr!
Pilot becomes a class skill for any class that casts spells.
The Spelljammer Ace gets real cool in my world. on top of the
abilities noted in the class, he also adds 10% per level to his
interplanetary speed. That's right! a 10th level ace goes 200
million miles per day!The look on the dude's face on p.25 says it
all! This makes the Ace a desirable class, since any spellcaster
gets his level in the SR system (Paladins, etc., 1/2 level),
something not found in Spider Moon.
Spelljamming parties would want an Ace cohort just to enjoy the
advantages, if not play one themselves. Let's face it; space is
cool, but sometimes you're just ridin' the bus waiting to get
there. An Ace speeds things up, and gives you serious advantages if
you're being followed. Of course, the other guys could have an even
faster ace... What'cha think?
