[sb118-ronin] Cmdr Ben Walker: "Dogged Destruction" (Tag Kolk)

((Holodeck 2))

::As they walked into the holodeck, a starfield dotted with asteroids greeted them  Amidst the turbulence were a number of Grendellai ships, looking like some mad scientist's creation, some in plain sight, some hiding behind the rocks.::

Kolk: Do they always set traps like this?

Walker: Not always, but it does appear to be their standard practice. Their stealth systems don't block visuals, just normal ship's sensors. In general, if you see one, there are at least three hiding.

::As he spoke, a glowing white USS Ronin entered the simulation.: :

Walker: So Mr. Kolk. From what you know... how would you deal with the situation?

Kolk: Well, given their tendency to send boarding parties, I'd want to keep my distance, so I'd suggest launching a squadron of fighters.

Walker: Sending single man fighters against hidden starships in an asteroid field?

Kolk: Point taken. Okay, no fighters...

::Jack looked at the scene as the shining Akira drifted slowly toward the trap. It was obvious that he was trying to think his way through it all. ::

Kolk: Okay, assuming they don't answer our hails, what if we laid in a course that would bring us within their weapons range for mere seconds, launched a volley of torpedoes to taunt them and the drew them away from the asteroid belt. In your experience, would their friends follow?

Walker:  :: Smiling broadly, the Ronin's new CO gestured to watch.:: Computer, Engage shoot and scoot scenario Gamma Romeo.

:: At his words, the scene came alive, The Ronin dove in, twisting in flight as it fired a largely inaccurate barrage of torpedoes and moved to withdraw.  Grendellai ships, hidden from sight moved to engage and continued to fire.  Much like ticks on a dog, it was long minutes before the Ronin pulled itself free and limped apparently home. ::

Walker: The problem is, you don't know where the limits of their weapon range is, nor where their hidden units are.  While admittedly this is a hostile scenario, it's not outside the bounds.

Kolk:

Walker: Follow me.

:: Moving toward the visible enemy ship, Ben faced himself toward the Ronin's point of entry. ::

Walker: Ok, instead of trying to figure out what they are going to do...Think about what you would do if you were them.

Kolk:

Walker: Exactly.  You know that the Ronin is effectively blinded here.  And that the Federation is a swaggering bully.  :: Chuckling:: or at least to their mindset.  So...what is your goal?

Kolk:

Walker: :: Nodding:: Ok...so as the Grendellai commander, what would you do?  How would you trap and beat the Ronin?  Once you know that...then you can come up with some ideas.

Kolk:

((TBC))
