((Uss Discovery - Archer's Quarters))

::Kelly strode confidently from her living quarters, She had taken enough
time over getting ready and felt she really ought to report to McCall. Kelly
noticed almost immediately that she was getting the odd look as she walked
the corridors of the Discovery. Perhaps it was due to her being a new face,
perhaps it was due to the slightly unorthodox uniform or perhaps it was
because she had inadvertently started chewing gum the moment she had arrived
on the ship. If Kelly was honest it was a bad habit that she had picked up
from before when she was in the Wolf Pack, something in her psychy had
triggered it off in her again.::

((Ceremony Hall, Star Base 285))

::Kelly had entered the Ceremony hall after transporting to the Base from
the ship itself. She had made her way to the Hall after locating Colonel
McCall there. Kelly had spotted the Marine Colonel quite easy, his uniform
and medals made him easy to spot. Kelly noted he seemed to be having a
conversation with another officer, someone else she recognised but couldn't
quite put a name to the face. Kelly hung around initially hoping to get a
change to interrupt but finally she gave in to her urge to approach and
introduced herself.::

Archer: I hope I am not interrupting

McCall / Garrett: response

Archer: Lt Jg Kelly Archer, reporting for duty sir

McCall / Garrett: response

Archer: I transferred here from SB118 sir, I apologise I was held up in
transit

McCall / Garrett: response

Archer: I served as a marine before sir, under Colonel Danar, I believe you
also served with him on SB118 previously and on the USS Constitution

McCall / Garrett: response

Archer: Do you have any orders for me sir?

McCall: On a professional level I am continuing my tour of various Starfleet
departments where my skills would be of some use. Think Marines is the last,
wouldn't have thought I would bring anything useful for the departments that I
haven't already worked for.

Garrett: What departments are left?

McCall: Certainly don't see myself working for Science, Medical or Engineering.
Seem to spend most of my time keeping the latter two departments busy.

Garrett: I am sure they don’t fell that way……

McCall: Well on a personal level I have been on a few dates with a fellow
officer recently. Very early stages to be honest. Recent missions have hardly
helped either.

:: Rei smiled, and lightly touched his arm::

Garrett: I never expected you to wait for me….

McCall: reply

Garrett: The world we live in is vast, many worlds and many different people…

McCall: reply

Garrett: No, there is on one for me….

::Rei smiled and thought of her two lovely children, the one she gave birth
too, and the one she adopted::

::Daisha had found a ring she liked and Jay was going to do everything in his
power to get her what she wanted. Striking a deal with the Ferengi shop keeper,
he took the ring Daisha wanted to her.::

BLANTON: It's all yours.

DAISHA::Smiling slightly:: And how long are you going to be paying for it?

BLANTON: Nope, it's paid in full.

DAISHA: Did you keep the receipt?

BLANTON: Of course.

DAISHA: Good. Then let's take it back.

BLANTON: Take it back? I thought you wanted it.

DAISHA: Jay, I overheard what you did. You didn't tell me you had your mother's
ring. I would never ask you to give that up.

BLANTON: It's not a matter of giving anything  up, Daisha. It's a matter of
getting you what you want.

DAISHA::Shaking her head, she removed the ring:: No. I won't let you sell an
heirloom for anything.

BLANTON: It's just a ring, Daisha. My mom willed it to me to give to the woman I
wanted to marry, but she would want you to have what you wanted, just as I do.

:: Daisha was adamant about taking it back, and when they  went back into the
shop, Jay got a kick out of her, reading the Ferengi the riot act about fair
business practices. And if that wasn't enough,  she mentioned her Gorn friend,
threatening to let him settle the agreement. In the end, Daisha had Jay's
mother's ring back in her hand, and the other ring was again in the case.::

DAISHA: Now, you were about to put a ring on this finger?

::He took the ring from her, and poised it at the tip of her finger, noticing
the luster of the precious metal against her skin, and the sparkle from the
diamond lighting up on her face. He could imagine how proud his father had been
giving his mother the ring that had represented his love of her.::

BLANTON: Daisha Waltas, this ring although used, held much love within it.
::sliding it onto her finger:: It is with it, I honor you with my promise to
love you always.

::She smiled and kissed him softly::

DAISHA: I love you.

BLANTON: ::whispering:: An I love you. ::clearing his throat as some passersby
stared at them:: Um... So what did you get your Dad and Dr. Morgan?

DAISHA::Showing him the carved tree:: I think Dad and Alex will love this..they
met on Ba'ku, and whoever carved this must have used one of the species for
inspiration. It's almost exact.

::Smiling, he hugged her.::

BLANTON:  It's perfect... Now, you know what would top this shopping trip off
just right?

DAISHA: Response

BLANTON: ::grinning:: You serving me breakfast in bed tomorrow morning.

DAISHA: Response

BLANTON: ::laughing:: Seriously, what would you like to do?

DAISHA: Response

BLANTON: I don't know... What about something very none Marine. Um... why don't
we get a holodeck and do something very... Ba'ku?

OOC:  Welcome to Ensign Lundrigan.

((Ceremony Hall, Star Base 285))

:: McCall spoke to Rei about the recent events and what they meant for the
Marine unit. The Colonel had not quite come to terms with what it meant for
them as a whole as he did not really want to drastically alter the current
platoon rosters. The longer you stayed with the same people the more cohesive
you would become as a unit. With plenty of new arrivals most would simply be
used to bring the platoons back up to full strength. Replacing officers and
experienced NCO's was however far harder and was something that had to be
done.::

McCall: Without going over the entire roster at the moment you will be taking
over from Tinoco and will be in charge of ten Marine specialists. They are
experts in a number of fields such as demolition, electronically warfare,
reconnaissance etc. Tinoco was badly injured in the last battle and is not
expected to return to duty anytime soon.

Garrett: What happened to Tinoco?

McCall: He is not the only one hence the large numbers of replacement that are
due to turn out in the next few days. I get the impression that most have
volunteered to join us due to the amount of combat that we have seen. Not sure
if that it is a good
thing or not to be honest..

Garrett: I guess that depends on why they volunteered

McCall: If I had to guess it is because we have seen more combat that 90 percent
of other Marine companies in the same area.::

Garrett: The only way you are going to tell that is by waiting and seeing what
the future holds…. Ohh and observing.

oO Not going to be great if they are all here just so they can see some
combat... They are the type of people that get themselves and others killed.. Oo

::Rei smiled. McCall frowned at the thought of having to do multiple background
checks on the newly arriving Marines. Given the reluctant of previous units to
answer even the most basic questions it was going to take a considerable amount
of time to get all of the checks done..::

McCall: ::grimly:: Hopefully not a large body count....

Garrett: So what has been happening with you?

McCall: On a professional level I am continuing my tour of various Starfleet
departments where my skills would be of some use. Think Marines is the last,
wouldn't have thought I would bring anything useful for the departments that I
haven't already worked for.

Garrett: reply

McCall: Certainly don't see myself working for Science, Medical or Engineering.
Seem to spend most of my time keeping the latter two departments busy.

Garrett: reply

:: McCall was not entirely sure how Rei would react, the advantage of not
having a four year old was of some help but overall if was not a subject that
the Marine Colonel particularly wanted to discuss. Short of the station going
to red alert that was not an obvious way out of the current conversation
topic.::

McCall: Well on a personal level I have been on a few dates with a fellow
officer recently. Very early stages to be honest. Recent missions have hardly
helped either.

:: Being a former Security Chief and a trained Intelligence Officer he happened
to be good at judging people's reaction. At the current moment in time this
ability seemed to have deserted him.::

QUAY: ::quietly:: No, I don't think that at all.

ESKYYS: That wasn't a question. Your a good officer, a damn good Marine. But
I'll be damned if you think you can corner the market on grief. I've seen, and
caused, more deaths than you could imagine girl.

QUAY: I'm sure you have.

ESKYYS: For a Marine your not to observant, I'm not in uniform. You want to hit
me? Try it.

QUAY: Why would I want to hit you? I only asked to talk to you because you
invited me to do so yesterday. If you've changed your mind, and don't want to
listen to me, then I'll keep my question to myself and you can get back to your
family.

ESKYYS: Alright, go ahead.

QUAY: ::calmly:: First of all, everyone deals with death in the way that feels
right for them. Just because you don't deal with it the same way I do, doesn't
make my way any less effective for me, nor your way for you.

ESKYYS: Hum, possibly.

Quay: Yesterday, we all were under the strain of grief, and we all were dealing
with it. Today, life starts anew without them. We take their memory with us, but
we don't let their loss stop us. Am I not correct?

ESKYYS: I would have to agree.

Quay: Actually the only thing I find stopping me from picking up and going on as
usual is the fact that how I chose to deal with it was discussed with a
subordinate, and I feel that my effectiveness as a higher ranking officer has
been compromised, leaving me only one choice in the matter.

ESKYYS: That being?

Quay: The chain of command was broken when Marine Captain Wood became involved,
and subsequently, sought me out.

ESKYYS: That wasn't my choice, he overheard a private conversation. And he
sought you out as a friend. :: Holding up one finger. :: But you hurt your
standing an officer when you decided to go out in public obviously intoxicated.
Your right in that everyone deals with loss in there own way. But your way is
destructive to yourself, and your responsibility. I'm no longer in your Chain of
Command, but I would still like to help you. But I will butt out if that is what
you want.

::Tyr walked arm in arm with Alex, the first time they'd been able to spend any
time alone was precious to him.::

o O Well, unless you count last night..and the night before...wow...what a
night! O o

::He smiled at the memory and stopped to look at several storefronts, with Tyr
steering them away from the more shady, Ferengi-run types. He had remembered
mentioning about altering his quarters::

MORGAN: ::tilting her head:: That would make it our quarters.

WALTAS::Smiling:: I guess it would. I hope you like cats.

::She leaned her head on his arm as they started walking again.::

MORGAN: ::suddenly changing the subject:: I want some ice cream and hasperat.

WALTAS: That's a um...interesting combination.

MORGAN: ::grinning:: You better get used to it. Wait until I start
waking you at 0200 to get me stuff to eat.

WALTAS::Winking:: Why do you think I'm going to give Mitchell the night shift?
He can make food runs.

MORGAN: response

WALTAS: You're not going to start those sneezing fits Bajoran women have are
you?

MORGAN: response

WALTAS::Laughing:: I'll be sure to buy you a handkerchief from one of the
vendors. ::Turning serious for a moment:: Alex..do you think the baby will be
alright?

MORGAN: response

::Stopping, he pulled her aside and sat down at one of the many benches along
the promenade, overlooking the spaceport. The Discovery was already looking
better.::

WALTAS::Taking her hands, noticing his had suddenly gone cold:: I mean..You're
part Bajoran, part Betazed, I'm Ba'ku..a tri-race baby..

MORGAN: response

WALTAS: I'm just scared that something may go wrong, or be incompatible. I've
noticed you turned green more than once at the ceremony.

MORGAN: response

WALTAS: Well, we should probably let the cat out of the bag anyways. I'm sure we
could get Raj to look at  you, and he'd be under double-patient confidentiality
considering he's a Counselor and a former MD.

MORGAN: response

WALTAS::Smiling, he stood:: Good. And I...::His expression brightening, his
voice raised to a sudden booming baritone:: HANNIBAL!

::The wolf turned and, seeing his old friend, went tearing away through the
crowd with Addie in hot pursuit. When he reached the Ba'ku Captain, who was now
standing braced with his arms outstretched, the wolf tackled him to the ground
and playfully gnawed on his arm. Laughing, Tyr rolled the wolf onto his side and
tickled his ribcage, growling right back at him. Seconds later Addie arrived
with several alarmed security guards. With phasers pointed at the wolf Tyr
looked up and grinned.::

WALTAS: Easy, guys. He's a friend.

::Tyr stood and dusted himself off, patting Hannibal behind the ears and waiting
for Addie to arrive.::

WALTAS: You lost your wolf, Addie.

ADDYSON: response

WALTAS: What's wrong?

ADDYSON: response

WALTAS: Well, I'm sure Raj has a reason. He's probably just busy. Why don't you
take Hannibal for a run around the lower promenade. Call Lieutenant Ghyurn.
He'll find you a place to get Hannibal some exercise.

ADDYSON: response

::Tyr smiled as they departed and he looked self-consciously at his black shirt,
now covered in wolf hair. He smiled at Alex.::

WALTAS: Old friend.

MORGAN: response

WALTAS: You want hasperat and ice cream and you call ME odd? ::Nudging her
playfully:: c'mon..There's a bajoran shop around the corner.

::Blueheart was catching up on finishing his report. He hoped he wouldn't get a
reminder from the Captain to hand his overdue report. He struggled to find the
words, his mind distracted and weary from the decision-making process. He
exhaled sharply, rubbed his tired eyes and looked over at Addie and Hannibal
playing with a piece of rag in the living room. He smiled.::

BLUEHEART: Don't knock anything over okay? ::He called out. The two were
oblivious to his words.::

::He was about to resume typing when the dirty rag fell on the desk, knocking
over his steaming cup of Raktajino, making him jump, startled. And before he
could utter another word, Hannibal lept onto the desk, grabbing the rag in one
clean sweep of his jaws.::

BLUEHEART: Hannibal! ::He scolded.:: Addie! Addie come get Hannibal now!

::Addie came running to get Hannibal who had already jumped to the floor,
wagging his tail apologetically. Addie led him back to the living room, looking
over her shoulder at Blueheart trying to clean up the spilled beverage. She
returned to help him clean up.::

BLUEHEART: ::irritable:: It's ok Addie. I got it.

ADDIE: ::sad:: Sorry Raj...

BLUEHEART: I said it's ok. ::He rearranged the clutter on his desk, disposing of
the rag.:: You just make sure Hannibal doesn't make another mess, alright?

ADDIE: Sure thing, Raj... He didn't mean it.

BLUEHEART: Maybe we could find him some temporary place to stay until the
Arboretum is fixed? Seems to me like he has healed pretty okay. ::He sat back
down to finish his report.::

ADDIE: ::looking glum:: He still can't run as fast...

BLUEHEART: That's because he's cooped up in this quarters. How can he? ::He
tried thinking of words, but was again at a loss, feeling the frustration
grow.::

ADDIE: ::almost stomping her foot:: Fine. I'll find him some place else to stay.

::Blueheart was too engrossed in his report to pay attention to what Addie said.
He was startled once again when he suddenly noticed her standing beside him,
eyes moist, threatening tears.::

ADDIE: Am I going to stay with Sheila again?

BLUEHEART: ::surprised speechless, looking away from his unfinished report::
Wh--?

ADDIE: ::tears now streaming down her face:: Am I going to stay with Sheila
again?

BLUEHEART: What are you talking about? Why would you think something like that?
::His heart skipped a beat, thinking of her possible answers. He could almost
deduce what she was about to say.::

ADDIE: I heard you and Sheila talking last night. ::Sobbing hard.:: How you
don't want me to be on Discovery!

BLUEHEART: oO Oh gods! This just got so much more complicated! Oo Addie... ::He
tried to reach for her hands, but she moved away from him, sulking.:: Addie,...
we haven't decided anything... I was meaning to talk to you about that...

ADDIE: I'm nothing but trouble for you!

::And with that last retort, she spun around and ran out of the quarters, a
confused Hannibal racing after her. Blueheart stood up instinctively to run
after her, but his secondary instincts kicked in, telling him to give her some
space, for the moment at least. He wasn't to perturbed of her safety since
Hannibal was there to protect her. But he decided to keep track of her
whereabouts nonetheless.::

BLUEHEART: Computer... Keep track of civilian Addyson Martin. Update me hourly.

COMPUTER: Acknowledged. Keeping track of civilian Addyson Martin.

BLUEHEART: Thank you, Computer.

::He tried to resume working on his report, wringing his hands together as if to
squeeze his brain to produce something creative. But the recent event clearly
troubled him emotionally. He tried pacing, more Raktajino, listening to Puccini,
but nothing worked... There was only one thing left for him to do in situations
like these... ::

DAISHA: Well, you DID promise me a ring..

BLANTON: ::standing:: That I did. ::taking hold of her hand to help her up::
C'mon, let's go see what we can find. There's a tobacco shop down the

DAISHA::Elbowing him in the ribs:: I'm sure I can find an airlock around

::The pair looked in the windows of several shops before they found one that
suited their fancy. ::

BLANTON: I like this gold set of his and her wedding bands. What do you

DAISHA: Well, that would go beautifully with the engagement ring..

BLANTON: ::half teasing:: Oh... You want an engagement ring? Which one did

DAISHA: Well, you didn't have to..I mean...

BLANTON:  ::hugging her:: Alright, let's go in and take a closer look.

DAISHA::Brightening as she spotted a beautiful ring, center princess cut
with bagettes:: Oh my..

::Inside,  Jay watched Daisha's face as she tried on the ring. Although is
was not quite what he had in mind to give her, he had to admit it was
beautiful, and if that's what she wanted, then he would do his best to get
it for her.::

DAISHA: Jay this is beautiful...

BLANTON: ::kissing the tip of her nose:: Okay, if that's the one you want,
then that's the one it will be. Go look around for an engagement gift for
your dad and Dr. Morgan while I do some negotiations.

DAISHA: I didn't even think of that. ::Kissing him softly:: You're full of
surprises.

::She looked around the shop and spotted a quartz sculpture of a large tree,
not unlike the ones on the Ba'ku homeworld. The detail was amazing and she
knew that both her father and Alex would adore it. She remembered them
stealing into the night on Ba'ku and also knew of her father's favorite
tree. She quickly purchased it and then remained at a distance while Jay
finished talking to the shopkeep about the ring. Her sensitive hearing
picked up part of the conversation.::

BLANTON: It was my mother's ring and I know it's worth... 2,000 credits and
nothing more.

Rufee: My final offer... 2,500 credits and the ring.

BLANTON: Deal.

::Waiting for a receipt, Jay folded it, shoving it into his pocket, then
took the ring to Daisha wanted to her, slipping it onto her finger, and
smiled at her.::

BLANTON: It's all yours.

DAISHA::Smiling slightly:: And how long are you going to be paying for it?

BLANTON: Nope, it's paid in full.

DAISHA: Did you keep the receipt?

DAISHA: Good. Then let's take it back.

:: When Valdivia woke up, it was to see a new message on the screen. It did
not seem urgent, so he took his time to go take a sonic shower, and put on
the uniform, still sleepy. ::

oO Gold? Oo

:: The color woke him up definitely. ::

oO I hope it won't be more than a couple of days before I get accustomed. I
am still used to blue. Oo

:: He wanted to take breakfast, but he decided to start by the message. ::

VALDIVIA: Computer, show me the message.

:: The screen showed a short text, saying there was a new ensign joining
HCO. ::

oO HCO? Oo

:: The screen showed a link to his profile. ::

oO Eric Lundrigan. He is good in both operations and helm... Well, in fact
he is assigned to HCO, but those are, somehow, separated departments, so I'd
like to talk to him, and surely so does Lt.Cmdr Anders, and we'll see what
he prefers. Lundrigan... Oo

:: The name somehow seemed familiar, but he didn't know from where. Thinking
he will get to it later, he decided to go check the Discovery. In theory, it
would be accessible today, at least for repair teams and the like. While
working on the main computer, he was sure to count as a repair team,
somehow. ::

oO Now that I think of it... O'Connor was right. I should coordinate with
engineering for this. I think he will be a valuable resource in the future.
Oo

VALDIVIA: =/\= Lieutenant Valdivia to Commander Eskyys. =/\=

ESKYYS:response

VALDIVIA: =/\=Sir, I understand you, or at least engineering groups, are
going to start working on the Discovery by today. Is that so?=/\=

ESKYYS: response

VALDIVIA: =/\= Well, I'd like to take a look at the computer myself. I'm
still working on whatever happened to it back then. I though we could
coordinate.=/\=

ESKYYS: response

VALDIVIA: =/\= Thanks, commander. Let me know if we can do something for
you. Valdivia out. =/\=

:: Remembering he hadn''t had breakfast, but too eager to stop for that, he
simply took a cup of tea and left with it at hand. Soon enough, he arrived
at the docking clamp. ::

O'CONNOR: Mornin', boss.

:: Valdivia could't help but smile. But the man couldn't see it. ::

VALDIVIA: Good morning, O'Connor. Prepared to a day of work?

O'CONNOR: Yes, boss. Some of the guys are already in.

oO That's efficiency... I think. Oo

VALDIVIA: Well then, go with them. I'll be there in a moment.

:: Looking interrogatively at him, the man entered the ship. After a few
seconds, John reacted. ::

oO I told her she could (or even should) come. I already forgot her once. Oo

VALDIVIA: =/\=Lieutenant Valdivia to Ensign Kivith. =/\=

KIVITH: response

VALDIVIA: =/\=Good morning. As I told you, I am starting to work on the ship
and the sensor logs. If you are still interested, you may join us and we
shall work together. =/\=

::Going back to the table, Jay sat down beside Daisha, not saying a word.::
DAISHA::Waiting a long moment to say something, when he didn't, she finally
blurted out:: Well?!

BLANTON: Nothing much, but he gave is blessing.

::She exhaled, and a smile crossed her face.::

DAISHA: He did? I mean...he did..of course he did. But he didn't have anything
else to say?

BLANTON: Just that I was marrying a hard-headed woman, ::grinning:: but then I
knew that all ready.

DAISHA::She flicked a fork-full of mashed potatoes at him:: Don't forget, I'm
spiteful too.

BLANTON: ::laughing:: Spiteful, yeah, among other things.

DAISHA: So really, what else did he say?

BLANTON: Oh just the standard father stuff about how to treat you with respect.

DAISHA::Smiling:: You realize you're taking his little girl away from him right?

BLANTON: I'm not taking you away from him. He'll always be your father, but now
that you're a grown woman, I'll be picking up your needs as your husband.

DAISHA::Growing more serious:: Well, it's..more than that. Dad and I...we've had
our differences but he's always been there for me. Since the day I stepped onto
the bridge of the original Discovery. He's been my protector. ::Wrinking her
nose slightly:: Whether or not I asked him to be. Sometimes
it was a bad thing but most of the time..it was a good thing. ::She thought of
her father's protective embrace and her eyes moistened slightly:: He's giving up
that role now...to you.

BLANTON: ::thoughtfully:: Well, I suppose he will be relinquishing part of that,
but still, with you, there is a lot of protecting to do, so the more the
merrier.

DAISHA: C'mon. Let's go shopping.

BLANTON: What do you have in mind... a wedding dress?

DAISHA: Well, you DID promise me a ring..

BLANTON: ::standing:: That I did. ::taking hold of her hand to help her up::
C'mon, let's go see what we can find. There's a tobacco shop down the Promenade.
Perhaps they will have an extra cigar band laying around.

DAISHA: Response

::The pair looked in the windows of several shops before they found one that
suited their fancy. ::

BLANTON: I like this gold set of his and her wedding bands. What do you think?

DAISHA: Response

BLANTON: ::half teasing:: Oh... You want an engagement ring? Which one did you
have in mind?

DAISHA: Response

BLANTON:  ::hugging her:: Alright, let's go in and take a closer look.

DAISHA: Response

::Inside,  Jay watched Daisha's face as she tried on the ring. Although is was
not quite what he had in mind to give her, he had to admit it was beautiful, and
if that's what she wanted, then he would do his best to get it for her.::

DAISHA: Response

BLANTON: ::kissing the tip of her nose:: Okay, if that's the one you want, then
that's the one it will be. Go look around for an engagement gift for your dad
and Dr. Morgan while I do some negotiations.

DAISHA: Response

::Jay turned to the Ferengi proprietor to settle on the price.::

BLANTON: How much?

Rufee: 24,000 credits

BLANTON: ::frowning:: It's worth 10,000 credits.

Rufee: Your girl wants the ring, Hooo mon... 21,000 credits.

::Jay knew the Ferengi had the upper hand, and he had to change tactics.::

BLANTON: ::starting to walk off:: Okay, no sale.

Rufee: 19,000 credits.

BLANTON: ::seizing the opportunity:: 2,000 credits ::taking the ring he was
going to give Daisha out of his pocket:: and this.

::Rufee looked it over. Checking the stone and the metal for purity, he saw the
value of it as equal to the ring the girl wanted, but he persisted.::

Rufee: 4,000 credits and the ring.

BLANTON: It was my mother's ring and I know it's worth... 2,000 credits and
nothing more.

Rufee: My final offer... 2,500 credits and the ring.

BLANTON: Deal.

::Waiting for a receipt, Jay folded it, shoving it into his pocket, then took
the ring to Daisha wanted to her, slipping it onto her finger, and smiled at
her.::

BLANTON: It's all yours.

DAISHA: Response

BLANTON: Nope, it's paid in full.

((DS 285 - Dock))

::Ensign Eric Lundrigan walked off the gangway from the docked transport and
stepped out of the line of foot traffic. He stopped to take in the
surroundings. True, this wasn't the first time on a starbase, but it was his
first time experiencing it through the perspective of a Starfleet officer. He
absently tugged at the single gold pip on his collar, and gave a wry grin. Eric
hadn't always planned to enroll in Starfleet, but now that his cadet cruise was
over, hindsight told him he had made the right decision.

Shrugging his duffel back to a more comfortable position on his shoulder,
Lundrigan started off towards the main promenade. Walking at a leisurely pace,
Eric took in the surroundings as he went. He was craving the order and routine
of shipboard life, yet he knew that would come aboard the Discovery soon enough.
For the time being, he drank in the sights and sounds of variety that only a
large hub like a starbase could provide.

The young ensign shrugged slightly as he went along, trying to find comfort in
the new uniform he now wore. The officer's garb was slightly more comfortable
than that he wore as a cadet, but the new fabric still needed to wear in. At
least the gold colors of the operations department suited him. Eric had
considered wearing civilian's clothes off the transport, but he was unsure if he
would have the opportunity to change on DS285 before meeting his commanding
officers. The last thing Eric wanted was to create a wrong impression with his
superiors by reporting in inappropriate attire.

The events in the Avalon sector were still fresh enough that details were
sketchy to come by for someone just out of the Academy. Eric knew that the
Saurians had calmed down, but peace had been achieved at a fairly high cost. He
was a bit nervous about joining a crew that would be mourning and licking its
battle wounds. That sort of experience forges a bond amongst the survivors, and
that would make it even more difficult for a young, green officer to fit in.
Lundrigan had been fortunate to avoid tragedy his entire life. It would make it
difficult for him to empathize with his fellow crewmembers, and he had to keep
that in mind as he tried to find his place on the Discovery.

Ensign Lundrigan had dallied longer than he felt was appropriate, so he
approached a panel on the wall of the promenade.::

LUNDRIGAN: Computer, what is the location of Commander Mitchell of the USS
Discovery?

::The computer gave him the commander's location, so Eric set off to find him.
Lundrigan had taken a cursory look at the files of the captain and the
commander, so he was fairly certain he would recognize them at first glance.
Now, though, he wished he had researched the personnel files a little more
closely, in order to have a first impression of the first officer. It was more
than likely just nerves, but Eric felt woefully unprepared for his first time
reporting for duty in his career. As he rounded a corner, Eric saw the
commander a few yards down. With a deep breath for confidence, Lundrigan
stepped forward to intoduce himself.::

LUNDRIGAN: Commander Mitchell, is it? ::standing stiffly at attention:: Ensign
Eric Lundrigan, reporting for duty.

MITCHELL: <response>

::Eric couldn't be sure, but the commander seemed the slightest bit distracted,
and looked weary. The officer was congenial enough, though, and it put
Lundrigan to ease slightly.::

LUNDRIGAN: Yes sir. I'm trained in Ops and Helm. I'm assigned to that
department aboard the Discovery.

MITCHELL: <response>

LUNDRIGAN: I'm not certain if there is a department head, and if so, who it is.
Is there somebody I'll need to report to once we're aboard ship?

MITCHELL: <response>

LUNDRIGAN: Very good, sir. I understand that the ship is undergoing repairs.
Are we quartered aboard, or are we quartered on the station?

MITCHELL: <response>

LUNDRIGAN: Of course. Thank you sir. Anything else I should know at this time?

::Kivith was pleased to finally be out of her quarters. Having spent so much
time training for her position, it was awkward to be on shore leave for such a
long time. Especially having no acquaintances to interact with. It seemed
that Dr. Leona had finally ended her unwanted vacation, so it was with much
pleasure that she wrapped her long scarlet hair into buns and put on a clean,
perfectly pressed blue-fringed uniform. After checking in a black computer
monitor to make sure her appearance was impeccable, Kivith strode into the lab::

KIVITH:  Good morning, Doctor.

LEONA: Hello Ensign. I hope you are ready to work. Even though were not on a
mission yet we have a ton of work. There is plenty of work to be done but before
we do that there are some thing we need to get sorted first and I have a small
task for you to do. Please sit down for a minute.

KIVITH: If you please, I would rather stand.

LEONA: So, I see you have an aptitude for Astral phenomenon. We are in need of
an expert in Astrometrics. The job's yours if you want it or of you prefer
something else it's up to you.

KIVITH: That is my area of interest, ma'am. My qualifications should be
sufficient...

LEONA: Excellent. I'll update the files. Now… There is a small task I have for
you. We have been getting some strange reports about the Discovery. It now sine
been repaired but the crew has been feeling uneasy lately. Command asked us to
look into it and see if we come into it.

::Kivith did her best not to roll her eyes, but she wasn't very successful. She
hid the annoyance behind a deeper than average nod. It was doubtful that the
doctor would notice. Her first official task as a graduated Starfleet officer
was to be to figure out why the crew was "feeling uneasy." Kivith appreciated
that the crew was under a great amount of strain, but surely there was a
psychological explanation for their feelings. She said nothing, simply waited
for Dr. Leona to continue::

LEONA: I am not sure were on a big, busy station so perhaps someone is spreading
some kind of pathogen. Who knows? It would be logical to start there.

::As far as Kivith was concerned, she was being turned into a glorified
operations officer, testing the air quality for an extremely unlikely biological
assault. Still, she had done more demeaning tasks; she would do this one to the
best of her abilities.::

KIVITH:  Very well.

LEONA: I have some preliminary data you may want to reference. I don't know if
it has anything to do with how the crew has been reacting these past few days
but perhaps you'll find something.

KVITH: Of course, Doctor. I'll look in to it.

LEONA: Pay special attention to the readings just before the Discovery docked
with the starbase. We were passing a Binary cluster when there was a brief
sector wide gama burst.

::That finally got Kivith's attention. It was rare that a gamma burst would
reach sufficient magnitude to be sensed throughout an entire sector.:: That is
highly irregular.

LEONA: That's what I thought too and so did the computer but something odd
occurred. What ever happened caused the entire hull plaiting to briefly
depolarize. The internal force field arrays quickly compensated and that was the
end of it.

KIVITH: That is certainly not a normal reaction.

LEONA: Your right, it doesn't normally. The Discovery registered a brief gama
burst directed from a nearby star, but the navigation logs report appropriate
course corrections. The gama burst was not big enough to cause sufficient hull
depolarization that's what's so odd about it...

KIVITH: I wonder if this is a natural phenomenon. Would it be possible to take
a shuttle to the scene of the burst?

LEONA: Maybe… There was also an intense data burst at the same time. Now Stars
usually emit incoherent and sometimes volumness amounts of background noise. No
this was too brief and localized to be background radiation. :: Pausing and then
smiling. :: Well it seems as your small task is a bit larger then I advertized
it to be but I am sure you will do fine. Bring me a report in a couple of hours.

::Kivith was becoming more certain that this might not be natural. Even if it
turned out to be synthetic, it would still be an interesting study::

KIVITH:  Aye, Doctor.

LEONA: Feel free to use whatever resources of the lab you want. We have it to
ourselves all week. I will be running the Saurian data from our last mission
here if you need me.

::Kivith quickly put herself on task. The first thing she did was to examine
the ships records of air quality, testing for toxins or anything else that
didn't belong. There were trace elements in the air, but she doubted they
would be responsible for mass-illness. She realized she could have been biased
by her suspicion that the crew's symptoms were psychological. Next, she
correlated the timing of the gamma burst with the internal sensors from the
ship. There were a few minor fluctuations within the ship's systems, not all of
those were within regular parameters. There was one very troublesome symptom
concerning the warp core that she would have to ask about the timing of. She
stored that thought for when she gave her preliminary report, then continued
with her search. Moving on to the source of the datastream, she compared the
gamma burst with any natural phenomenon that had previously been encountered.
The lab's computers were very efficient, and she came to her conclusions in just
over an hour::

KIVITH: Doctor, I've formed my initial report.

LEONA:  response

KIVITH: It is my suspicion that there are no outside sources behind the crew's
unease. I believe their traumatic experiences from the last mission is
influencing their mental health. ::That sounded more callous than she intended,
but she wasn't going to sugar coat her findings.

LEONA: response

KIVITH: While researching the gamma burst, I noticed there were a number of
different, unrelated systems that were affected. Is my understanding of the
burst's timing correct? Did the warp core give a false breach alert shortly
after the burst was recorded?

LEONA: response

KIVITH: I see. My final finding is less positive. I have been unable to
discern whether the burst was natural or produced by an outside source of some
sort. Do you have any suspicions, ma'am?

McCall: Any idea what department you are ending up in? JV is badly injured and
has been replaced by Eskyys at Engineering from being XO, Mitchell's got his
old hot seat and is now First Officer. Security has been replaced the Marines
on the ship which I am currently in charge of since the problems we had with
the return of Zero.

::Rei frowned, she assumed that McCall would have know that she had been
assigned to his group::

Garrett: Err, I was assigned to the marines

McCall: I had no idea your were even being assigned to the Discovery until I
saw you walking up to me at the end of the ceremony..

Garrett: I thought you would have been aware….

McCall: To be honest I have spent most of my time preparing the funeral,
dealing with paperwork for those that died and most important talking to their
family and partners. I have not even had a chance to look at the paperwork of
the new arrivals, we are suppose to be getting a fair few as well other than
Captain Wood and yourself. They are not due to arrive for a few days at the
moment. Not that Discovery is going anywhere any time soon.

Garrett: By the sounds of it, no I don’t think Discovery is going any where
soon either

McCall: Last thing I heard you were still on Earth and I certainly did not
think you were going to end up here once you resumed your career away from
Earth. It is a big fleet and plenty of people need experienced officers at the
moment.

Garrett: I guess I am just designed to be here

McCall: Without going over the entire roster at the moment you will be taking
over from Tinoco and will be in charge of ten Marine specialists. They are
experts in a number of fields such as demolition, electronically warfare,
reconnaissance etc. Tinoco was badly injured in the last battle and is not
expected to return to duty anytime soon.

Garrett: What happened to Tinoco?

McCall: He is not
the only one hence the large numbers of replacement that are due to turn out in
the next few days. I get the impression that most have volunteered to join us
due to the amount of combat that we have seen. Not sure if that it is a good
thing or not to be honest..

Garrett: I guess that depends on why they volunteered

McCall: reply

Garrett: The only way you are going to tell that is by waiting and seeing what
the future holds…. Ohh and observing

::Rei smiled::

McCall: reply

Garrett: So what has been happening
with you?

::He smiled at the two PADDs in front of him. On one, there was a delivery
confirmation of yellow roses to a Miss Alexis Morgan. On another, the
transfer authorization from his former CO, Captain Hauck. He sat back in his
chair, letting his eyes wander upward as he remembered the confrontation
he'd won to get the transfer.::

o O Old Hauck didn't know I had the trump card..that little dalliance with
the Engineer. O o

::Once the transfer was approved, he had, of course, sent a message to
Hauck's wife about the Engineer and the Captain's actions. After all, it was
only fair, and his only regret with leaving the USS Bach behind was to see
the look on the Captain's face when his wife confronted him about the
affair. He didn't fear the Captain's wrath, now that he was two sectors
away.::

o O But what a fight it would have been. Hauck would have been his usual,
stuttering self, as always unable to explain his actions or the reasons
behind him. I can't believe Starfleet would pin four pips on such a
doddering fool. O o

::He returned his attention to the PADD, containing a bio on his new
Captain.::

o O This one, though...this one's going to be a tough nut to crack. He's
spent a long time in the Captain's chair and judging from his record he's
not a gentle soul like Hauck was. He even looks like the rebellious
type..look at that long hair..and a Ba'ku. The fool's a walking enigma.
Still, this court martial hearing must be looked into... Ammunition..always
ammunition. O o

::He'd done the same with each of his COs, moving up from Ensign to JG by
threatening his first CO with accusations of war crimes due to his treatment
of a Cardassian prisoner during the Dominion wars. From there to Lieutenant
he'd become Hauck's best friend, confidant, and, happily, the keeper of
knowledge of the Captain's affair. He'd listened sympathetically, even
embracing his CO in what was, to him, a disgusting display of emotion. Now,
the sites of the target had moved. With Hauck in disgrace, he had a new ship
to master, ranks to achieve, and, most importantly, an old flame to
re-ignite.::

::His thoughts had never left Alex, not in all the time since their
relationship had ended. He didn't call it "love" because he didn't believe
in such an insipid emotion, but he fully acknowledged the lust. And it was
lust that drove him once he'd found her again. It was lust that drew him to
use the information Hauck had confided in him. And it was lust that, when a
call had come for replacement Marines and Security personnel for Discovery
due to their conflict with the Saurians, that Matthew Cain had put in for a
transfer.::

o O To touch her again..to feel her body against me. The last time...she was
just...mistaken. It wasn't what she called it. She was drunk, so was I. She
didn't say no.. And now she'll be mine again. You've done well for yourself,
Alex. Chief Medical Officer of the flagship of the Avalon sector. You've
come far, little girl..and I'll take you farther O o

::He'd skipped the ceremony, knowing he would easily make something up to
explain to his new Captain why. Late transports, and all that. He'd worn the
cloak of lies so many times he felt it was part of him. It
was...comfortable, like a warm blanket on a cold day. He didn't know what he
would do without it.::

::Standing, he straightened his uniform and headed out of his quarters,
pausing to tap his comm badge.::

CAIN: =/\= Computer. Locate Captain Tyr Waltas. =/\=

COMPUTER: Captain Tyr Waltas is in his quarters.

CAIN: Direct me there.

::The lights on the wall lit up and he followed them casually, concocting
his story as he went. The pilot of his transport was a rookie and had never
been to the Avalon sector before. The Saurians had also created a security
issue which delayed his arrival even further causing him to miss the
ceremony.::

o O You have my deepest sympathies for your loss, Captain. I will never be
able to replace them but I will do my best always, captain. Blah, blah,
blah. O o

::Chuckling, he slid his hand through his closely-cropped brown hair and
continued to follow the lights to the Captain's quarters.::

::Tyr hadn't yet had the will to drag himself back into the ceremonial hall,

only wished Alex would save him from having to make a return appearance.
Luckily, she did just that. After comforting him, his thoughts turned, for
once, to them.::

WALTAS::Brightening:: C'mon. We're long overdue to spend some time out of
these uniforms. There are some shops on the station where I thought we might
start looking...

MORGAN: Looking?

WALTAS: Well, we have a wedding of our own to plan, don't we?

MORGAN: What? You don't want a traditional Betazoid wedding?

WALTAS::Eyes growing wide:: You...you want to get married...naked?

::She laughed and hugged him.::

MORGAN: Honestly, I'd rather not.

WALTAS::Exhaling:: Thank goodness. ::Giving his bicep an experimental flex::
I don't think I'm ready to be THAT close to the crew.

::She reached for his hand as they began walking down the corridor.::

MORGAN: I still have to tell my dad.

WALTAS: How do you think he'll take it?

MORGAN: How would you react if Daisha had told you she was pregnant?

::Tyr winced as the word "Grandpa" went through his mind and he thought of
Blanton and Daisha together. He swallowed the sudden lump that appeared in
his throat::

WALTAS: I'd toss him out of the nearest airlock...

MORGAN: That's what I'm afraid of. ::grinning:: So you can tell him and I'll
just stay back at a safe distance.

WALTAS: Hmm..maybe I'll have Ghyurn nearby just in case..is he tough?

::Alex laughed.::

MORGAN: I'm teasing. He's not that bad. Actually I can't wait for the two of
you to meet.

WALTAS::Smiling:: Let's just hope he's not as protective as I am or we could
have a problem.

MORGAN: response

WALTAS::Shrugging:: I just...feel like time is passing me by. Daisha's
grown, getting married, moving away, Eskyys is leaving as First Officer..but
then I look at you..us...

::He paused in the middle of the corridor and, heedless of who was around,
wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her deeply::

WALTAS: And I see new beginnings.

MORGAN: Response

WALTAS: C'mon. Let's get out of these penguin outfits and go shopping.

EPSILON: Commander Eskyss! ::calling::

ESKYSS: reply

EPSILON: I believe you are actually early, sir.

::Some Starfleet officers from their ship were there. The area was similar to a
commercial business lounge, although this was reserved for semi-urgent Starfleet
matters between ships and base personnel. From the other side of the room, a
science officer approached them.  ::

ESKYSS: reply

SUMATARAN: Commander, it's good to see you again.

EPSILON: Sir, I thought it would be best for Lt. Sumataran to meet us. I believe
you served together.

::They shook hands. Sumataran raised her eyebrows and looked back at the
Commander.::

SUMATARAN: With all due respect, I'm surprised to see you in the command,

::Mitchell was sitting in the dark room that was light mainly by the light
coming from the cryo stasis tubes. Inside the one in front of him was his
friend, Lt Cmdr Julio Vannini. And a place such as this was one Mitchell
normally dreaded and refused to visit. But this was his friend in there, and
sitting here was all Mitchell could for him.::

::His heavy thoughts were interupted by the sound of footsteps.::

Rriarr: Excuse me, are you Commander Mitchell, sir?

MITCHELL: ::looking up toward the voice:: Yes. What is it, ::checking the
newcomer's rank pips:: Ensign?

Rriarr: (Reply)

MITCHELL: Oh. ::standing up and offering his hand.:: Welcome aboard the USS
Discovery. What department are you assigned to?

Rriarr: (Reply)

MITCHELL: The Discovery is currently undergoing repairs. They should be done in
a few more days. Until then, you can check in with the Quartermaster here aboard
the station, and they can get you some quarters.

Rriarr: (Reply)

MITCHELL: Come on, I'll give you the quick tour.

Rriarr: (Reply)

MITCHELL: Its ok. I was just visiting a friend.

MITCHELL: Have you seen the ship yet?

Rriarr: (reply)

MITCHELL: She's a good ship. She's taking her licks but she's brought me home

WALTAS::Sighing deeply:: My little girl...

MORGAN: ::gently kissing him:: Daddy's little girl is grown up but she will

WALTAS::Brightening:: C'mon. We're long overdue to spend some time out of

WALTAS: Well, we have a wedding of our own to plan, don't we?

MORGAN: What? You don't want a traditional Betazoid wedding?

((Star Base 285 Temporary Lab.))

:: Dr. Leona rented one of the labs so the Science Department could catch up on
some work. It wasn't too difficult to acquire seeing as how there are over a
hundred science equipped labs on the station. Although the requisition of the
lab was difficult because it contained one of the more sophisticated, top of the
line super computers utilizing the latest in diamond/ quantum chip designs.
There were only a two of them on the station and the only about a handful more
throughout this entire half of the quadrant. Veronica pulled a few strings,
namely her Mother who cited it was from an important Saurian mission. The data
collected on the Imperial Ship Plecanth and various technologies. Along with the
tactical data they received and also star charts and zeno-biological data from
more new life forms that this part of the Galaxy has never before encountered.
It was a lot of work and the Discovery crew had the honors to get first look. ::

:: It wasn't really deep analyses of data but rather a comprehensive run through
to figure out where all the data goes, which experts and resources would be
involved. The Federation just let the Discovery and base personnel sort it all
out. A few science offices came in early as well as Ensign Kavith. ::

KAVITH:

LEONA: Hello Ensign. I hope you are ready to work. Even though were not on a
mission yet we have a ton of work. There is plenty of work to be done but before
we do that there are some thing we need to get sorted first and I have a small
task for you to do. Please sit down for a minute.

KAVITH:

LEONA: So, I see you have an aptitude for Astral phenomenon. We are in need of
an expert in Astrometrics. The job's yours if you want it or of you prefer
something else it's up to you.

KAVITH:

((ooc: You can choose whatever scientific field you want. ::

LELONA: Excellent. I'll update the files. Now… There is a small task I have for
you. We have been getting some strange reports about the Discovery. It now sine
been repaired but the crew has been feeling uneasy lately. Command asked us to
look into it and see if we come into it.

KAVITH:

LEONA: I am not sure were on a big, busy station so perhaps someone is spreading
some kind of pathogen. Who knows? It would be logical to start there.

KAVITH:

LEONA: I have some preliminary data you may want to reference. I don't know if
it has anything to do with how the crew has been reacting these past few days
but perhaps you'll find something.

KAVITH:

LEONA: Pay special attention to the readings just before the Discovery docked
with the starbase. We were passing a Binary cluster when there was a brief
sector wide gama burst.

KAVITH:

LEONA: That's what I thought too and so did the computer but something odd
occurred. What ever happened caused the entire hull plaiting to briefly
depolarize. The internal force field arrays quickly compensated and that was the
end of it.

KAVITH:

LEONA: Your right, it doesn't normally. The Discovery registered a brief gama
burst directed from a nearby star, but the navigation logs report appropriate
course corrections. The gama burst was not big enough to cause sufficient hull
depolarization that's what's so odd about it...

KAVITH:

LEONA: Maybe… There was also an intense data burst at the same time. Now Stars
usually emit incoherent and sometimes volumness amounts of background noise. No
this was too brief and localized to be background radiation. :: Pausing and then
smiling. :: Well it seems as your small task is a bit larger then I advertized
it to be but I am sure you will do fine. Bring me a report in a couple of hours.

KAVITH:

LEONA: Feel free to use whatever recourses of the lab you want. We have it to
ourselves all week. I will be running the Suarian data from our last mission
here if you need me.

(( Bridge - USS Achilles ))

:: Having found the damaged civilian transport but not found any bodies Struntz
wondered what had happened to them. This was answered when his XO returned to
the Bridge from the away mission. Cook tapped several keys and the viewscreen
changed to show imagery from the Galahad. What was attacked the civilian
transport was unmistakably a Klingon D7 battle cruiser although it looked like
there were some considerable alterations to it.::

STRUNTZ: Klingons?

COOK: It gets worse, the logs show that all of the people on the ship were
beamed onto the Klingon ship.

STRUNTZ: Not exactly typical Klingon behaviour.. At least they are alive for the
moment...

NEIL: Sir the warp signature ends just ahead.

STRUNTZ: Drop us out of warp. Run scans to try and find a cloaked ship.

NEIL:  Aye sir.

:: The Galaxy class Achilles dropped out of warp, just ahead was the trailing
edge of the ion storm. Struntz was not surprised that the warp signature from
the Klingon D7 battle cruiser stopped there. The storm would have made the
cloak next to useless and would probably have done considerable damage to the
ship without their shields being up. This of course meant that the ship was
nearby.::

LARKIN: Nothing on sensors. We could always deploy our runabouts and shuttles
and set up a net.

NEIL: I would not fancy being on one of those runabouts or shuttles with a
Klingon Cruiser out there. Might be an old ship but it's weapons will destroy a
shuttle or runabout in short order.

STRUNTZ: Agreed, lets try something a little more aggressive. Prepare a full
phaser spread, zero degree axis. Target phasers on any impacts. Can't risk
torpedoes in case we destroy the target.

:: The Chief Tactical officer nodded before tapping in the order.::

LARKIN: Phasers ready. if they are directly aft of us it won't be covered in
the phaser spread.

STRUNTZ: Mr Neil, hard to port once we start firing. Tactical be ready for it,
if I was stalking us the best place to be is directly aft

NEIL:  Helm ready.

LARKIN:  Tactical ready.

STRUNTZ:  Fire.

:: A series of beams shot out from the Achilles, all but one hit nothing. He
beam that hit something was to the aft starboard side of the ship and the
forward section of a Klingon ship briefly appeared.::

LARKIN:  Target found!

:: Two more phaser bema shit the cloaked ship before it shimmered into full
view. Despite what was originally thought the ship was not fully Klingon and
it's haul was made up of various different pieces of technology. To Struntz it
looked s though it's port nacelle was from an old Soyez class starship.::

STRUNTZ: Target their warp engines, I also want a full scan of that ship to
locate the transports crew and passengers.

:: Phaser fire from the Achilles continued but it a more concentrated pattern
as it targeted the Klingon ships port nacelle. The ship had now raised it's
shields and was returning fire. The Galaxy class ship rocked on impact.::

LARKIN: Their port nacelle is hit, they are leaking drive plasma. Their
weapons aren't Klingon, they are Dominion and are doing far more damage.
Shields at 71%

COOK: I have found the passengers and the crew of the transport. They are in a
cargobay surrounded by a forcefield. Also there are no Klingons on that ship.
The crew is made up of a number of different species.

STRUNTZ: Target their shield generator and then their secondary power grid.
Send Security to cargobay #1. We will beam the transports crew and passengers
there.

::  The helm console beeped.::

NEIL: I suggest we hurry, we have got three more ships heading in. None
conform to standard id's, similar to that ship they are made up of different
ship designs.

:: The D7 cruiser manoeuvred wildly as I tried to gain some time before it's
reinforcements arrived. Phaser fire continued to rain in from the Achilles and
it was beginning to make an impact.::

LARKIN: Their shields are down, targeting their secondary power grid.

NEIL: The incoming ships are definitely different. One is originally a Romulan
warbird bits of Breen ships added on, the second is a Cardassian Galor with
parts from Ferengi ships. The third is a Federation Miranda with Dominion and
Klingon components. Their ETA is 1 minute..

STRUNTZ:  Mr Larkin..

:: Larkin did not comment and tapped in another firing sequence which finally
did the trick.::

LARKIN:  Forcefield is down.

STRUNTZ:  Drop shields, begin transport.

:: The transport was completed just as the 3 hybrid ships dropped out of warp.
2 photon torpedoes from Achilles finally brought the Klingon ship to a stop.::

STRUNTZ:  Hail them.

NEIL: No response. They are moving into an attack pattern.

LARKIN: We can't take on all three of them at the same time. If the warbrid
has it's original weapons they are more than a match for us.

STRUNTZ: I know but I want as much data on those ships before we leave.
Evasive pattern delta 3, target the Miranda. She will be the easiest to knock
out and stay away from the fore of the warbird.

NEIL:  I will try...

:: The Achilles moved randomly and at great speed but continued to take a
number of hits by the attacking three ships. The shields of the vessel that
mostly resembled a Miranda were taking far more punishment than the originally
should have if the vessel was still the same as when it had originally left
drydock. A volley from the warbird slammed into the saucer section of the
Achilles.::

LARKIN: Primary phaser array is off line!

STRUNTZ: Neil, get us back to the Starbase!

:: The helmsman wasted no time and took the Achilles to warp. To the surprise
of most on the bridge the hybrid ships did not given chase.::

STRUNTZ: Larkin, help engineering get our phasers back on line. I want them
back on line before we reach DS-285. Commander Cook, go see to our guests and
make sure everyone is from the transport. I am going to file a report with
Starfleet.

:: The Colonel spoke about the recent events on the ship and in particular
about the trip home from the colony in which the Discovery had threatened to
destroy herself. The conversation moved onto their adopted daughter and Rei's
new son. The possibility Rei's four year old son joiner her on Discovery
brought the conversation back to the Discovery's recent missions.::

McCall: A fleet based combat after the hostile take over of a Federation colony
and the return of Zero being our last two missions certainly would not be put up
there as children family. I would suggest you have a chat with Eskyys and maybe
one or two other parents before you make your decision.

Garrett: That does sound like a good idea…

McCall: Any idea what department you are ending up in? JV is badly injured and
has been replaced by Eskyys at Engineering from being XO, Mitchell's got his old
hot seat and is now First Officer. Security has been replaced the Marines on the
ship which I am currently in charge of since the problems we had with the return
of Zero.

::Rei frowned, she assumed that McCall would have know that she had been
assigned to his group::

Garrett: Err, I was assigned to the marines

McCall: I had no idea your were even being assigned to the Discovery until I saw
you walking up to me at the end of the ceremony..

Garrett: I thought you would have been aware….

oO I wish I had been aware... Oo

Garrett: reply

McCall: Last thing I heard you were still on Earth and I certainly did not
think you were going to end up here once you resumed your career away from
Earth. It is a big fleet and plenty of people need experienced officers at the
moment.

oO Luck of the draw or did she request to be assigned here? Oo

Garrett: reply

McCall: Without going over the entire roster at the moment you will be taking
over from Tinoco and will be in charge of ten Marine specialists. They are
experts in a number of fields such as demolition, electronically warfare,
reconnaissance etc. Tinoco was badly injured in the last battle and is not
expected to return to duty anytime soon.

Garrett: reply

McCall: He is not the only one hence the large numbers of replacement that are
due to turn out in the next few days. I get the impression that most have
volunteered to join us due to the amount of combat that we have seen. Not sure
if that it is a good thing or not to be honest..

::The events of the last few weeks had been a little unnerving to say the
least. The strange briefing had by Commander Ventu on board the Base,
followed by her disappearance, followed by the sudden arrival of some top
brass at the station and the almost immediate, undisclosed transfer of
almost the entire staff to other posts and the then apparent quarantine of
the base had all left Kelly a little spinning. Kelly had found herself on a
shuttle on the way to the USS Discovery without a moment to think about what
had happened. Her shuttle had taken longer than many of the others who had
been transferring in order to allow her to stop off at a marine station and
collect her new marine orders from a senior office. A Colonel Steve Mccall
was the man she was to report to. She knew the name of course, or at least
she thought she did. Perhaps the same man as the Lt Steve McCall who she had
known of back when she had been a marine on SB118 under Colonal Danar some 9
years ago. Kelly had been a little more than a raw recruit back then of
course. Young and excited about being one of the founder members of the
'Wolf Pack' as they were known back then. Now things were different of
course, Danar had gone; the marines were no longer a small unit but a large
scale attack force that had replaced the ships normal security force
entirely. Kelly had heard talk about something that really excited here. She
noted in the ships public message folders there were a lot of mentions of
Hannibal. Kelly had known straight away that this could well be the original
animal. Danar's arrival at the base some months ago had led to her
understanding the real nature of the beast. The clone that Danar had brought
with him had been held in stasis in order to preserve its ages. This animal
would be the original....the first ever....the prototype for want of another
word. Kelly stood for a moment looking in the mirror trying to work out how
old Hannibal would be now, in Human years he was somewhere in the region of
16 but the genetic engineering that had been carried out on him had slowed
his growth and aging considerably and there was no way to know how old he
really was. Kelly stopped for a moment and stepped into the sonic shower.
She thought she really ought to keep her mind on the need to report for duty
more than the thoughts of the past. The feel of the sonic shower against her
skin soothed all the uncomfortable feelings in her body she spent what
seemed like an eternity in the shower before finally deciding It was time to
get dressed and report. Kelly stepped out of the shower and after towelling
herself down she walked over to the replicator.::

::Kelly waited as the uniform materialised in front of her. The green was a
start reminder of her return to full marine status. He regular rank replaced
by a marine rank insignia. Kelly slipped the shortened trousers on first,
and then the shirt. She finished with the tunic buttoning it up not quite
all the way to the top. The fitting was tight but stretchy, that was how she
liked it, it allowed for greater movement whilst not restraining her in any
way. Kelly finished her preparation and stepped out of her quarters for the
first time.::

OOC: Thanks to everyone for the well-wishing. I'm slowly recovering..fever
is down from its peak of 103. Folks, I'd strongly suggest getting your
vaccinations when they're available. You do NOT want to get this stuff. :(

((Ceremony Hall, DS-285))

::It was like waiting to hear the results of a surgery. No, worse than that,
because it involved the two men she loved the most in this universe. She had
no idea what her father's reaction would be, especially after the grim
ceremony and the overall mood of the crew. The mission with the Saurians had
been successful, but the price had been extremely high. Now with the deaths
of the crew on his mind, and his heavily damaged ship looming largely in the
viewport, it could have been a mistake.::

o O I should have stopped him. Dad can't be in a good mood after all this. O
o

::When Jay returned, she tried to read the expression on his face, but for
once, she wasn't able to. He was either hiding extreme disappointment,
or...::

::Going back to the table, he sat down beside Daisha, not saying a word.::

DAISHA::Waiting a long moment to say something, when he didn't, she finally
blurted out:: Well?!

BLANTON: Nothing much, but he gave is blessing.

::She exhaled, and a smile crossed her face.::

DAISHA: He did? I mean...he did..of course he did. But he didn't have
anything else to say?

BLANTON: Just that I was marrying a hard-headed woman, ::grinning:: but then
I knew that all ready.

DAISHA::She flicked a fork-full of mashed potatoes at him:: Don't forget,
I'm spiteful too.

BLANTON: response

DAISHA: So really, what else did he say?

BLANTON: response

DAISHA::Smiling:: You realize you're taking his little girl away from him
right?

BLANTON: Response

DAISHA::Growing more serious:: Well, it's..more than that. Dad and I...we've
had our differences but he's always been there for me. Since the day I
stepped onto the bridge of the original Discovery. He's been my protector.
::Wrinking her nose slightly:: Whether or not I asked him to be. Sometimes
it was a bad thing but most of the time..it was a good thing. ::She thought
of her father's protective embrace and her eyes moistened slightly:: He's
giving up that role now...to you.

BLANTON: Response

DAISHA: C'mon. Let's go shopping.

BLANTON: Response

DAISHA: Well, you DID promise me a ring..

BLANTON: response

((Medical Facility Door, DS-285))

:: As Valdivia was leaving sickbay, someone approached him. ::

O'CONNOR: Hello, Boss!

oO Boss? Oo

:: As Valdivia turned around, a man in his forties, with a gold uniform, and
a kind of irish look was approaching him. He looked at his rank, a Petty
Officer. ::

oO I have just read his profile... O'something... Oo

VALDIVIA: Hello, mister...

O'CONNOR: O'Connor. You are Lieutenant Valdivia, aren't you? So you will be
the new boss in operations? :: He clapped Valdivia's shoulder. :: It's good
to meet you. I work with the computer on the ship, so I'm at your service
now, boss.

VALDIVIA: Haven't you had any problems with the ranks?

oO Definitely not the tipical man serving on starfleet. Oo

O'CONNOR: :: his face grew more serious and he almost stood at attention. ::
I'm sorry, sir. I didn't mean to...

VALDIVIA: At ease, don't worry.

:: O'Connor visiblely relaxed. ::

O'CONNOR: I was going to take some root beer. Wanna join?

VALDIVIA: :: a little disoriented by the situation. :: Sure, why not.

(( Some recreational facility, DS-285))

:: As O'Connor leaded the way, Valdivia didn't even have time to see the
name of the place. He hadn't even had time to sit down when the man had
already brough two root beers. Valdivia didn't usually drink, so he doubted.
But, given the situation, and with the beer at hand, he decided to drink
that one. ::

VALDIVIA: So you work with the computers... what do you know about the
recent malfunction?

O'CONNOR: Rumors. I wasn't on duty at the time, I was taking a shower and
then the next think I know there was that man, green uniform, I don't even
know him. A marine, saying we had to evacuate. I barely had time to put my
uniform back. I asked once and again what was happening, and finally I got
some information, but just talkings.

VALDIVIA: I was in a similar predicament, but I used the Fearless sensors to
see what we could say. There was little information. I want to start working
on the computer as soon as possible.

O'CONNOR: So we are on duty now, boss?

VALDIVIA: Not until tomorrow, and you are on leave, you may come if you are
interested.

O'CONNOR: Anything that happens to her mind worries me!

oO Her mind? I suppose he is talking about the Main Computer... Oo

VALDIVIA: Well then, I'll see you there tomorrow morning. The baryon sweep
should be finished by tonight, so tomorrow the ship will be already
accesible.

O'CONNOR: With pleasure, boss. But it's engineering who should be working
there, so you should coordinate with them.

oO Either I will get tired of he calling me boss, or I will get accustomed.
And I don't know what's worse... Oo

:: After that, the conversation drifted to more banal subjects, and to the
telling of stories about the Valdivia's academy and O'Connor previous posts.
He was an expert programmer also, so they spent some time talking about
software. Finally, Valdivia decided to leave, although O'CONNOR approached
another group, seeming he would stay there until late. ::

oO Working with that man might be... interesting. At least, not what I'm
used to. Oo

:: He left the place, and went to his quarters. After all, he had dinner
alone, but that was good enought. It had been a tiring day, since the
ceremony, so after a light meal he went to sleep. ::

((Ceremony Hall, Star Base 285))

:: Colonel McCall spoke to Rei briefly about what had happened to the Discovery
and the problems that they had on the way back to the Station after the battle.
The problems with the Discovery still did not really add up to McCall, there
were suppose to be a number of fail-safes to stop what happened from
occurring.::

McCall: Computer might have taken some damage, can't rule out sabotage either as
the Discovery was boarded although from reviewing the footage via the security
cameras no one got near the Main Computer.

Garrett: so more than likely not computer sabotage, but an investigation of the
computer would be able to tell what cause it

:: McCall looked around the Ceremony hall and it had emptied considerably
although there were still a good number of people hanging around.::

McCall: So how have you and Gre'ta been. She enjoying life on Earth?

Garrett: yes… she loved it. Being around her grandparents, she has joined start
fleet her self now

oO Joined the fleet? If the Prime Directive had been adhered to she wouldn't
have even left that planet. Oo

McCall: Hope she isn't going to become a Marine. How is she doing at the
Academy? I doubt she has seen anything like that before.

::Rei Smiled::

Garrett: I think she will excel, but like any new cadet she is adjusting to the
new life style the academy offers

McCall: Probably going to be a challenge for her to start with. Not that life
is not a challenge for most of is at the moment as it is.

::Rei looked around them, and saw they were some of the last people here::

Garrett: Depending on the situation here, Dylan may join me here.

oO Dylan? New boyfriend or...? Oo

McCall: Don't mean to pry but who exactly is Dylan?

Garrett: Dylan is my 4 year old son…

:: McCall quickly did some mental arithmetic and came up with an uncertain
answer. It had been well over 4 years since Rei had left Discovery. The Marine
Colonel did not ask the most obvious question, he imagined that if he was the
father Rei would have told him well before now. Overall he did not want to ask
too many questions.::

McCall: Given the last couple of missions I wouldn't say the Discovery is the
safest place to raise a kid. Having said that there are a number of kids on
board, Eskyys son being the most obvious example.

Garrett: reply

McCall: A fleet based combat after the hostile take over of a Federation colony
and the return of Zero being our last two missions certainly would not be put up
there as children family. I would suggest you have a chat with Eskyys and
maybe one or two other parents before you make your decision.

Garrett: reply

McCall: Any idea what department you are ending up in? JV is badly injured and
has been replaced by Eskyys at Engineering from being XO, Mitchell's got his old
hot seat and is now First Officer. Security has been replaced the Marines on
the ship which I am currently in charge of since the problems we had with the
return of Zero.
