[roman_seas] Re: basing

Lloyd,

The illustration board I use is between 2.5mm and 3mm thick. The
product name is: Peterboro Illustration Board Rough Surface No.PK5.

There is also a No.PK4, but apparently that is half as thick, which
is not what you want.

I first used this product while I first entered art school back in
1979, and I still use it today. It has been around since 1905,
according to the info printed on the back of the board. It is
designed for wet medium artwork. The size is: 30 x 40 inches, which
bases a lot of Roman Seas ships. Since I made over 130 ship, I went
through two sheets, but purchased others for future projects. I
think I paid about $10 CND ($8.50 USD) per sheet. You can probably
get the board mail ordered if it turns out to be a purely Canadian
product. Art schools use it because it is easy to teach water colour
painting, as well as other mediums and is fairly cheap.

I painted my bases with two coats of blue spray paint (solvent based;
allowing the first coat to dry before applying the second coat) after
first colouring the edges with water based acrylic paint.

For my Roman Seas game markers, I used regular matting board. I use
matting board for all my homemade game markers. Matting board has a
101 uses. Just spray coat an inkjet printout with a clear coat,
spray glue the printout onto the matting board and then cut it out.
I made my own set of markers for the game, Fist Full of Lead (Wild
West rules) as the markers that came with the game suck (although I
am not given credit, I made the cheat sheet that comes with this game
which is found in the center spread of their new rule book).

E.H.

I base my ships on 1/8" hardboard. Hardboard is definitely too dense and hard to cut with a knife though, so is more difficult to use with out shop tools (I...
