well there's always pcgen, it is totally free, and tho it does NOT come with
closed content (i.e. nothing not in the OGL) it does come with the core books,
epic book, psionics, and the first monster manual. Moreover it is also
compatible with many D20 releases that are also included in the install file
that are permissioned by the original publishers. For closed content or your own
custom campaigns, you can code your own stuff, and there are yahoo groups
dedicated to helping you do just that. you shouldn't list what you're trying by
name of course (like, Scout class from complete adventurer) since it is closed
content, but if you word your question in general terms they are more than happy
to talk you through what you're trying to do. and NO they do not allow closed
content to be uploaded, you have to code it yourself or do so privately, behind
the scenes off the group lists.I've been using this one for years, and it is a
lot more accurate than the current redblade, but redblade is easier to use for
some customizing. I've been waiting for the new version for ages now, and will
*definitely* give it a good test drive if it ever comes out. if it does
everything it promises to be without having to code up stuff, that'll be my new
pc generator again.meanwhile for those who are curious, you can find pcgen

Re: code monkeys rockActually it is 3.5.But you are more than right about the
cost. It is $35 for just thecore books. Past that you ahve to pay for every
splat pack, optionsbook, or any other addon they made. Now I admit I paid for a
lot ofthose myself and honestly spent nearly $200 on all the books to getthem in
there. Then WotC decided to cancel all external companiespublishing of their
material (I mean both CMP and Paizo for Dungeonand Dragon). So in the end it was
a big waste of money. I ahve yet tocheck out CMP's own character tool but tahts
because I do not want toshell out the cash again.--- In
