Hi all!
This is the first time am posting a quiz and it obviously had to be on my
boy-favourite - Tintin!
This quiz is more for Tintin maniacs only and the rest are advised to keep
off it:)
Have tried to order the questions in what I think is an increasing order of
difficulty. So, I propose to have a different style of evaluation. It's pretty
simple actually:
You get the 1st one correct, u get 1 point. 2 points for the 2nd one. So,
getting the 5th one alone would entitle u to 5 points. And finally, a big 10 for
the last one. So, you can score upto as much as 55 points in this quiz.
And do not dare try the last one or two unless you are Herge incarnate:)
1. (Simple one to start off with!) What is the difference between the Thom(p)son
twins? (other than the name obviously)
Simple one! Universally cracked! Have given 1 point to anyone who has said
Moustache. The exact difference
(according to the official website) is Thompson has a straight moustache while
Thomson's is slightly twisted.
2. Who are the enemies of the Arumbaya tribe?
Cracked by many again - Rumbabas
3. Why does Carriedas agree to buy Picassos, Renoirs and Braques from the
Parke-Bennet sale although he has no space for them? (Clue: Think real-life)
Surprisingly cracked only by 2 people! The answer is Onassis was after them.
4. What is common to Carriedas and Goldfinger (yes, the 007 one himself)?
Surprisingly no answers to this one. Only Ravi Joysula was on the right track
and hence gave him 50% (2 marks). The answer is despite being such tycoons, they
both cheat even when it come to a simple gaem. Carriedas uses CC-TV in his
flight to play Battleships while Goldfinger uses Jane Masterson to spy on his
opponent's cards and tell him over his earpiece.
5. Connect the following Tintin characters: Dupont, Schulze and Fernandez.
Cracked by many.
Dupont is Thomson in French.
Schulze is Thomson in German.
Fernandez is Thomson in Spanish.
6. We all know about the Thomsons' guest appearnce in Asterix in Belgium. But in
which Tintin comic does Asterix appear?
Cracked by many - Tintin and the Picaros (in the dress parade!)
7. There are two scientific expeditions in Tintin (apart from the Moon one).
Name the person common to both.
(And for any smart-alecs willing to answer it as Tintin himself, it is wrong!)
No answer to this by any! Lots of smart-alec answers though like Snowy, Haddock
etc. But then I would have put this question at the start and not at no.7.
The two scientific expitions are '7 Crystals Balls: Sanders-Hardimann
expedition' and 'The Shooting Star'. No trivia here. U got have read them to
know the answer as Prof. Canntoneau.
8. Who in the world of Tintin is Elena?
Got some very good to answers to this one. A few of u guessed it as the gypsy
girl in 'The Castofiore Emerald'. Her name however is Miarka (am not sure about
this coz her Mom exclaims Miarka when she gets back to camp and so it could be a
gypsy slang as well.) Another very interesting guess was the girl in 'Lake of
Sharks'. As far I can recollect, her name is Nikita or something like that.
Coming to the right answer, Elena is actually the maid who worked in the
Carriedas home. When Carriedas was a kid, he stole his Mum's ring and blamed to
Elena who protested but was thrown on the street and Carriedas nearly died of
laughing (all this was due to the effect of the truth serum).
9. Link Tintin to the Enid Blyton foursome of Jack, Nora, Peggy and Mike (of the
famous Secret series....Secret Island, Secret of Spiggy-Holes....... there,
there..have nearly given it away).
Excellent answer given by Prasenjit and Swami.
The answer is the Eclipse. In the third secret series book - The Secret
Mountain, our foursome suffer from an airplane crash and are caught by a
mountain tribe and escape from sacrifice by an eclipse just as in 'Prisoners of
the Sun'.
10. (If any of u can get this without reading the book or Googling, u deserve
some kind of a memory Oscar only.)
Name the taxi driver who gave the hitch in 'The Calculus Affair'. (U get this
one, I'll declare u the outright quiz winner.)
This question was put to ensure nobody gets all 10. But wait, there is more news
to follow. Read on...
Before giving the answer, I quote Sanjeev Chandran "THIS IS UNFAIR... IT'S
GUISEPPE NAPOLEON SOMETHING SOMETHING. EVEN THE POLICEMAN LETS HIM GO WITH JUST
A "DON'T DO IT AGAIN". IF ANYONE GETS THIS AND SAYS HE HASN'T GOOGLED OR CHECKED
IN THE BOOK, HE'S LYING.".
The right answer is "Arturo Benedetto Giovanni Guiseppe Pietro Archangelo
Alfredo Cartoffoli de Milano." - a simple 10 word answer. But I have given
points as per the no. of words each of u has got right. If someone got 3 words
right, he/she got 3 points then.
And here is the shock: Debanjan Ghosh gave me the full correct answer and I
quote him: "i did nt saw all the quesn but the last one..and guess what ! i read
calculus affair when i was in 6 std, pretty pretty long time ago but hmmm check
my memory :))
ARTURO BENEDETO GIOVANNI GISSEPPO PIETRO ARCHELENGO ALFREDO CARTOFALI DE MILANO
(don mind the spell , pretty long time ...HUH )"
As a quizmaster, I have given him 10 for giving me the right answer but it is
upto the audience to decide what the truth is:)
And here is the winner list (marks out of 55):
Prasenjit Sengupta - 23
G. Swami - 19
Vanlaltluanga - 18
Ravi Joysula - 13
Debanjan Ghosh - 10
Shom Biswas - 7
Sanjeev Chandran - 6
Shailendra H - 3
Sumo - 1
Manish Chiddarwar - 1
Deepi S - 1
Shall be back with a Tintin quiz for the Tintin megalomaniacs next time:)
With Love,
Karthik
