Hello,

The sixth Ottawa Hybrid Tournament will be held March 20, 2010 at the University of Ottawa. We have limits on room reservations, so once again I will encourage a SW Ontario site. The mirror site can be held March 20-28.  With the Minnesota undergrad tournament scheduled for the March 6-13 period, it appears I won't create a conflict.

At the Ottawa site, I'm raising the base fee slightly, but the early packet deadlines will have higher discounts to compensate.

Base fee: $70
Additional teams from the same school: $60 each
Buzzers, fully-functioning: $10 discount
Full-time staff: $20 discount
Rotating staff: $5 discount
Minimum fee for a school: $0

Packet deadline dates (a Word or Open Office attachment to uotrivia -AT- yahoo.ca by 11:59 PM of the days listed):
January 1st: -$90 (intended for schools with multiple teams, but I'll take any packets)
January 31st: -$60
February 14th: -$40
February 28th: -$20
After Feb 28: contact me in advance, and we'll negotiate something.

Hint: the packet discounts are there to be used.

Subject distribution:
(1/1 or 2/2 refers to the number of tossups/bonuses. Within the description, "1" refers to either a tossup or a bonus)

ACADEMIC:
2/2 literature: 1 US/Canada, 1 British/foreign in English, 1 foreign language, 1 your choice; also 1 prose, 1 play, 1 poetry, 1 your choice
2/2 history: 1 US/Canada, 2 Europe/Mediterranean, 1 world
2/2 science: 1 bio, 1 chem, 1 physics, 1 "other" (math, earth sciences, computer science, astronomy, etc.)
1/1 more of the "big three"
1/1 fine arts: 1 visual (painting, sculpture, architecture), 1 "auditory" (music, opera, dance)
1/1 RMP: 2 of the three: religion, mythology, philosophy
1/1 social science: economics, psychology, linguistics, anthropology, law, etc.
1/1 more of the "minor three": a good opportunity to finish the trio of RMP
1/1 other: 2 of the three: geography, politics, academic current events

POP CULTURE (also see my policy on what's "good", later):
2/2 TV: 2 from the past five years, 2 from before then
2/2 movies: 4 different decades
2/2 music: 2 from the past ten years, 2 from before then
2/2 sports: 4 different sports. Avoid statistics unless it is a meaningful record
2/2 games: 2 video/computer/electronic, 1 board/card/traditional, 1 your choice
1/1 business/brands/technology: Avoid local topics (ie: national or international companies)
1/1 your choice: can be comics, popular literature, internet things, food, fashion, etc.; or more of the "big" trash categories

"Good" in pop culture:
-Either award-winning (Emmys, championships, etc.) or popular (Billboard, box office draw). It's great that you like one-season TV series like Jericho (and I do too), but that was neither popular nor critically successful.
-"historical" stuff (ie: before quizbowlers were born) really needs to follow those rules.
-no "adult" topics: there will almost certainly be high school students playing.
-no questions as jokes: if your intent of writing on a topic is solely to make fun of it, don't bother

Writing:
Submitted tossups should be within the range of 500-900 characters with clues of decreasing difficulty. Tossups will be edited to a 600-800 character range. It doesn't matter if you add powers: I can do that if necessary. I would like tournament-wide conversion of tossups to approach 90%: past Hybrids have been 75-80%.

Bonuses should be 3 parts of 10 points each. Each part should be a complete sentence with two facts. There should be an "easy" (high conversion), "medium" (50% conversion), and "hard" (low conversion) part. One way to create the easy/medium/hard scheme is to go progressively into more detail with each part: author/work/character, for example.

Difficulty: try to follow my conversion recommendations, with the understanding that there could be a range from high school students to players with years of experience. ACF Fall has good conversion, and also take a look at my original submissions for this past VETO and Mac trash.

Formatting: I'm not a stickler for formatting details. Two things: DO NOT SEND WORD 2007 FILES (.docx); and there is no need to put in tabs, numbering that may trigger Word's automatic lists, or page breaks (I don't care if your original submission has tossups split by the end of a page, it all gets copy/pasted out to another file anyway).

The University of Waterloo Quiz Bowl Club is pleased to announced that we will
be hosting the Eastern Canada site of ACF Winter on Saturday, January 16, 2010!
It will be taking place in the Math and Computer Building (MC) with more
specific locations and start times TBA. This will be a regular difficulty,
"official" ACF tournament, which means that it will be run according to official
ACF Rules.

Cost

The base cost for teams will be $120, with the following standard ACF discounts:

-$5 per working set of buzzers
-$10 for each staff member
-$5 if you provide us with the use of a laptop (1 per team)
-$10 per full 200 miles travelled one way by your team (as determined by Google
maps)
-$20 for non-Canadian teams
-$25 for "new to ACF" teams
-$75 for "new to Quizbowl" teams
-$50 for high school teams

Minimum fee per school: $0

All fees are in Canadian dollars, with American dollars being accepted at par.
Further explanation of these discounts can be found under the tournament fees
section of the ACF Packet Guidelines.

Packet Submission

Teams containing at least one player who has played a regular, collegiate,
quizbowl tournament before Sept. 1, 2008 are required to submit a packet in
order to participate in ACF Winter. Please consult the ACF Packet Guidelines for
more information about packet submission. Teams which submit acceptable packets
early (including those who are not required to do so) are eligible for discounts
as follows:

Nov. 22, 2009: -$50
Dec. 6, 2009: -$25 (-$50 for teams not required to submit packets)
Dec. 20, 2009: -$0 (-$25 for teams not required to submit packets)
Dec. 27, 2009: +$25
Jan. 3, 2010: +$50

Hi everyone

Teams from Rochester took both the first and the second spots with
records of 12-0 and 11-1 respectively. Ben Seitelman from the
University of Rochester won the individual top scorer prize with a
highly impressive 100 tossups and 80 ppg.

Thanks to Rico for directing the tournament and to all our excellent
volunteer moderators who zipped through 13 rounds by 6 pm: Zarya,
Peter, Jason, Sinan, Zhan, Jay Misuk and the rotating scorekeepers
from MacMaster.

Hope all the teams which made it out to this tournament enjoyed it!

This is an unofficial announcement that the University of Waterloo will be
hosting ACF Winter on January 16, 2010.  While I am in the final stages of
clearing it with the school, I have been assured that there should be no problem
with us hosting.

I will soon be making an official announcement both here and at hsquizbowl.org,
but I thought that I should at least mention this here for veteran teams who are
attending and need to write a packet as the $50 discount deadline is coming up
very soon.

We CANNOT provide copies of the questions at this time since another region will
be conducting the tournament in the next 2 weeks.  Once I get the go ahead to
