5 Boxes, each has 5 letters. The center letter of the last box is missing.
Can you guess what it is in less than 5 minutes?

This is a very common puzzle used by puzzle groups, including Mensa (the
high IQ society). For those that have never seen this before, Good Luck!

ANSWER:

Starting from the first square, if you move clockwise you will see the word
THIS. Now, move to the center letter 'P' and move the square number 2 to
repeat.

If you see the pattern, the saying is: THIS PUZZLE IS MADE OF SQUARE? -
The ? needs to be replaced with an 'S' to correctly solve the puzzle.

You are standing on the Land (green section) with 2 wooden planks. Each of
these planks is 6 feet in length. Across a very deep moat (RED) is treasure
(WHITE).

The distance from the Land (green section) to the treasure (WHITE) is 7 feet
on all sides. You can not swim, jump, fly or pole vault across. You can
not break the wooden planks and you do not have any other items (such as
hammer, nails, etc.).

How can you get across????

The correct solution to the moat puzzle is shown in the attachment.

If you place 1 wooden plank diagonally across a corner of the moat, walk to
the center of this plank and put the 2nd plank down, you can easily reach
the Treasure without getting your feet wet!

Dear Shane,

     Thisone is too easy.

First you place one plank accross an outside corner. Then you place one end
of the second plank on the 'Treasure Island" and the other end on the diagonal
board you placed first.

     See attachment for details

If I'm not mistaken, this is the current NPR Weekend Edition Sunday puzzle
available at http://www.npr.org/programs/wesun/puzzle/ and is by Elizabeth
Gorski. I don't particularly object to this puzzle being passed on per
se, but when you pass it on unattributed you make it sound like you
thought up the puzzle yourself, and that doesn't sit right with me (and
probably not with others either).

> > > > > >Where is the other dollar?
Well, the basic thing here is that $3 is the sum of what the paid plus what
they got back, Right?
So they paid $27 collectively which includes each persons contribution towards
the tip (ie $2/3=66cents approx) and they got back 3$ .......and
27+3=30$.
the basic flaw in the above expanation is the tip is being added twice......
But it sure is an interesting way to confuse people!!!!!!!!!!;-)

Here is the answer. I got this one in an email a while back and kept it!
Now I am glad I did!

The trick is this: >>> There is no $30! <<<

The room was SUPPOSED to cost $30, but it was really $25,
so the manager returned $5. In the end, the hotel got $25, not $30.

The brothers ORIGINALLY spent $30 ($10 each), but they got $3 back
($1 each), so they spent $27 ($9 each).
In the end, the brothers spent $27, not $30.

The difference between $25 and $27 is $2, and that's what the
bellhop took. There is no "lost" dollar!
The only thing lost was -- the bellhop lost his job...

When the 3 guys paid orginaly they paid $30 . $10 a piece. When the bell man
went to give the 5 bucks bak it would have meant they would have paid $8.33*
per person. Now since the deliver kept $2 that means the paid $28 total. or
9.33* per pizza. leaving $2 left over.. Or you could look at it like this. On
person paid 10 and the other 2 paid 9. Best thing to do to solve this kind of
dazziling mind twister puzzel. Done visualize in your mind, get 30 pieces of
paper. And play the roll out. It will hit you how easy it is to solve it as
well. Very good puzzle, though it is an old one.. Hope that helps you out
with this brain teaser !

Dustin,

You need to recheck your math.. $25 + $2 = $27, not $28, like you
stated above...

The formula for this equation should read like this:

3*$10-($25+2)=C

Where C = the change they recieved..

So lets look at this from a logical progression:

3*$10=$30 ($25+$2=$27)

So our expression would read:

$30-$27=C

so C = $3

See.. really simple.. if you apply all that algebra that they taught
you in High-School. (or Middle/Junior High depending on where you
are..)

And so if you add the $27 + $3 (instead of the $2 which is already
added into the $27,) you get the original $30...

<sigh> I don't see how saying you needed to recheck your math, is
degrading, and if you took the "Algebra in High/JR High " part as
degrading, I apologize, it was not meant to be directed at you, it was
just my way of saying that formulae from Algebra could be used to
follow this problem to logical answer...

Again I do apologize for any un-intended offense.. :o)
