You can make it as one of the PS3 beta testers if you use these 4 EASY steps to
start with!
You are going to learn where to look for jobs, how to focus your resume, and how
to make your application stand out so you have a really good chance of getting
hired.
For the record, being amongst the highest paid PS3 beta testers is great---but
it will take time to work up to that! You can work from home, and get paid to
play video games. It truly is the job of jobs, but you have to work at it to
make it happen.
Step 1: Finding jobs for PS3 beta testing
Make a list of all the game developers for the PS3, like SEGA and EA. Make a
list of 10-20 game developers and check their websites every few days. If you
look for a few weeks, chances are good you will find a job posting for a game
tester of some sort.
Step 2: Apply FAST and emphasize the right things
One key to becoming one of a PS3 beta tester is that you need to get your
application out fast. If yours is one of the first ones read, you have a much
better chance of getting hired. If you are checking game developer websites
every few days, you will probably be one of the first people to spot the job
offer and it will be easy to apply fast. Remember, there are probably quite a
few PS3 beta testers applying for the same testing position---you need to stand
out (see step 4)
You application (cover letter and resume) should emphasize these 4 skills:
" Strong communication skills" Good attention to details" Patience" Persistence
PS3 beta testers are hired to TEST games, not play them to have fun. You want
them to know you can work long hours and still find bugs (even minor ones).
Step 3 is for getting your first job as a video game tester. You can skip it,
but do so at your own risk.
Step 3: Offer to work as a PS3 beta tester for free
Since you will likely have no experience or references, offer to work your first
job as game tester for free. This will get your foot in the door and a chance to
add a reference and experience to your resume. Besides, working for free playing
video games isn't that bad of a deal. All PS3 beta testers started out
somewhere, and you need to too.
Step 4: Stand out in some way
Try sending a letter with a plastic bug and have the letter say something to the
effect of "don't let your game get ruined by bugs, give me a call". That would
leave a positive impression and make your resume stand out.
You could also trying sending a controller with the buttons sanded down saying
"I play games non-stop. I will test your around the clock, give me a call at..."
Do something that sells your skill as a game tester and stands out. Both
suggestions focus on your selling points---you find bugs and you can play for
long hours!
Now you know where to start looking, how to apply, and how to get hired for your
first job. As you get better, you will start making contacts and your references
may be able to tell you about job opportunities that aren't meant for the
public.
There is nothing stopping you from becoming one of the PS3 beta testers who work
from home. Get out there and get gaming!
