Since I am finally back to work, there is a greater chance that I'll be able to
man the booth. But since I can't guarantee that I'd be there I don't want to get
anyone's hopes up for it.

Either way I can drive down and definitely bring the posters and frames that
Eddy made last year, and I can deliver any flyer's or CD's that need to be also.

Page 55 under the Acrobatics skill:

"Creatures with a base land speed above 30 feet receive a +4 racial bonus on
Acrobatics checks made to jump for every 10 feet of their speed above 30 feet."

The penalty for being slow doesn't seem to exist any more. And since the
dataset already creates the Acrobatics (Jump) conditional skill use, it may as
well apply this modifier.

I think I may have used TYPE=Speed in my bug report, when in fact it should be
TYPE=Racial. Old habits die hard. ;)

Andrew,

I downloaded the data autobuild from the link at the bottom of your post, but
none of the updates were in it. In fact, some of the PF files were older than
the ones that came with the 5.16.0 download. Is there another place to get the
autobuilds from? If so, we should update the group's links.

Cheers,

Odd, I need to find out what is going on then.
Sounds like the autobuilds are still grabbing the 5.16 branch instead of
the trunk.

Hi everyone,

I don't know what happened, but for some reason when I open a character in PCGen
all of the tabs are empty except for the Summary and Preview tabs. This happened
to me in 5.15.13, which worked fine before, but I have since downloaded and
tried 5.16, which does the same thing. This happens for loaded characters and
new characters alike.
I'm using Ubuntu 8.4, and as far as I can remember I haven't done any major
changes lately that might cause something like this. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi Metukio,

I think we've had this happen in some of the Linux distro's. We haven't
been able to uncover the cause, since our coders can't duplicate the
circumstances.

If you don't mind volunteering some time to assist a coder in solving
this then we might be able to fix this issue. Without your help the
problem will remain.

A couple of basics though that *might* help:
OS and Build version?
Java (Sun Java vs. other)?
Any error messages in the console?

The other day I downloaded 5.16.0 and now when I load my preferred set of
sources it freezes up. I am also having the same problem in 5.15.4. Yesterday
the program sat for 24 hours before I shut it down and started over. Any
suggestions?

Thanks

Hi Andrew,

Yes, I'd be happy to contribute to the cause. I'll start with the basics:

I'm using Ubuntu 8.4. I'm not fluent in the jargon, so I'm not sure what the
build is.
Sun Java 6, as far as I can tell.
In 51513, when trying to load the Pathfinder data files, I get many error
messages of this kind:
SEVERE Unconstructed Reference

If there's anything else you need, please let me know (preferably with an
explanation on how to get it, since I'm still relatively new to Linux).

We could use a bit more info. Try running these commands in a command console
(such as xterm) and posting the output (you shouldn't need to use sudo):

uname -r (this will tell what kernel version you're using)

java -version (this will give a bit more detailed version info)

You results should look something like this:
uname -r
2.6.29-2-686

java -version
java version "1.6.0_14"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_14-b08)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode, sharing)

We recommend that you use the Sun JDK for running PCGen - we get weird
errors, such as this, when run under the open Java versions. Not sure if
that is us doing something not quite by the book, or if it is the open
JDK though.

OK, maybe not quite perfectly...
I still get all of the error messages when I try to load the pathfinder material
with custom feats and such, and some of those don't work the way they used to. I
tried looking into it, and it seems the feats and other stuff I've added are
there, but they're not considered to be custom (they don't appear blue in the
list editors, and can't be edited).
I have no idea what's the problem, but I really don't feel like rewriting all
those custom feats by hand... Help?

I'm at work today, but if you could send me a zip file of the CUSTOM
directory (The directory with the readme.txt that says NOT to mess with
the files there), I'll convert it to a proper lst and we can see if that
fixes the problem for you.

Also, can you supply the error messages so both the Content (Data) and
Code team can see what they are and possibly supply a fix.

Hello Andrew,

I'm not quite sure how to send the .zip file, since I don't have your email (I
can only see the part to the @, so I don't know what server I'm supposed to send
it to).

About the error messages, they didn't appear in the 5.16 until I copied the
directory Pathfinder under data/customsources.
Here's everything I see printed when loading the Pathfinder source material:

Anyone know how I would go about updating datasets I purchased from CMP for
PCG5.12 to the new 5.16?

Barring that, does anyone have datasets they have built themselves for the
Complete series and the Spell Compendium for 5.16?

If there was a tutorial out there, I would update a version of the documents
myself...

Thanks.

Use Barak's Perl Script to upgrade from 5.12 to 5.14, then use the built
in conversion jar in PCGen to go from 5.14 to 5.16

All,

These are easily resolved. I'm handling the issue with the OP offlist.
But the solution is syntax upgrades and knowing what Pathfinder does and
doesn't use.

hi,

i seem to be having a problem with this one... whenever i select to generate a
npc and choose any stats at the first window (or none at all)... it doesn't
generate anything I specify or follow the logic displayed.

Is this a settings issue?

Thanks,
Leon

Welcome to the PCGen Community Leon.

To address your problem it would help we had the following information:

PCGen Version? (example: 5.16.0)
Java version and provider (Sun vs. other)?

And finally, in the console window, are there any errors messages?

I load up PCGen 5.16, load Pathfinder and get no error messages. I then
load any character and I get *pages* of errors similar to these:

Is there a setting that I can change to stop the WARN/INFO messages?

Java is correct. Firefox is the browser, although the problem still
happens with IE.

Hi Ffolks,

I'm having an issue and curious if you guys have a fix. PCGen is oddly slow on
my machine and it definitely should not be. I'm not an expert with Java and read
something on the executable about the memory used but...

My system specs;
* AMD Phenom™ X4 9850 Black Edition Quad-Core CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology
* Single Hard Drive (250GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 8MB Cache 7200RPM HDD
* Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe nForce 570 SLI MCP Chipset DDR2/800 MBoard w/ Dual
PCI-Express
* 3GB (3x1GB) PC6400 DDR2/800 Memory
* Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional w/ Service Pack 3
* NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 16X PCI Express

As you can see, I have 3gigs of RAM and a whole gig of virtual memory from my
graphics card. My Processor is a quad-core.

Why is PCgen so slow? (A snail's pace, literally!). Is there something I can do?

Thanks,
Joe

Hi

It might be the way you're starting the application. Java limits the
amount of memory that it uses,
it wouldn't matter if you have 30GB of RAM if you don't tell it to use
morePCGen will run like a dog
with three legs. I'm in work and don't have access to the application,
but there's a batch file for
starting the application, if you look in it there's two numbers which
I think are currently 128 and 256
this means that java will sart wih 128K of memory and never use more
than 256. Up those numbers
and it should run fine. Sorry I can't be more specific.

While I've been aware of PCGen's existence for some time, and have even toyed
around with it in the past, I've never used it until very recently. My DM
started a new D&D 3.5 campaign and I figured that starting at Level 1 would make
learning PCGen a lot easier. I was wondering, though, if anyone could help me
with a few issues I've stumbled across.

Notes: First, I've looked over the documentation. However, I have absolutely no
experience in programming of any sort so a lot of the "tech speak" on both the
Wiki and in the actual documentation page of the website is way above my head.
Also, my new character is currently a CL3 Rogue2/Wizard1 dwarf. Finally, I'm
running version 5.16.0 and loading the 35e Game Master's documentation when I
run PCGen.

Any help at all with any or all of the questions listed below would be greatly
appreciated!

Q1: When I leveled up to 3 I added a Wizard level. I figured out how to add a
familiar (took some time) but eventually got it right, and chose a rat for the
+2 Fort bonus as listed in the PHB. However, this bonus is reflected on my sheet
in the miscellaneous column as +4. To test this apparent error I created a new
"fake" character, a level 1 human wizard. Before adding the rat familiar he had
+0 in the misc column; after adding the familiar that changed to a +4. But the
rules in the PHB clearly state a rat only grants a +2 Fort bonus. So is this a
mistake on PCGen's part, or is there some book or errata out there that makes
rat familiars give a +4 rather than a +2? If not (and even, in case my DM
rejects such a change from the printed material), is there a way I can manually
change the Fort bonus rats give in PCGen so that it'll display +2 on the printed
character sheets in the future?

Q2: Is there a way to manually "instruct" the program on how to display weapons
on the printed-out character sheet? All of the crappy weapons I have are listed
first; the ones I actually use are listed at the bottom. Doesn't sound like such
a big deal, but it sort of annoys me.

Q3: Is there a way to create a "blank" field for melee or ranged weapons that
would appear on the printed sheet? I ask this because one of the members of our
group received a magic great-sword during a recent session and he wants to use
PCGen, too, but I can't figure out how to list the special (i.e. a non-RSRD item
the DM created himself) qualities the DM gave the weapon (that it lights up as a
free action, and returns to its wielder when thrown). If there's an easy way to
list these qualities using PCGen, great! If not, a blank melee field would let
my friend write them in himself after printing out the sheet.

Q4: Editing, again. Basically, I think it'd be great if this program made it
easy to edit anything before you hit that "print" key, and I've got to believe
there's some obvious way to do this that I'm too dumb to figure out. For
instance, if I want to select a feat that isn't in the RSRD, shouldn't there be
a way for me to add it anyway by manually entering the information? Say a feat
(making up an extreme example here) that gives a +20 to Will saves while raging
that was included in some late, non-RSRD WotC book. Please don't tell me there's
no way to edit the output file I'm going to print to reflect this! Otherwise,
only people who use straight-up RSRD rules could benefit from this program. And
what self-respecting role-player doesn't buy supplemental books?

Q5: More of a statement here, actually. While I love how PCGen automatically
calculates so much info for me, as a player I'm only using it to print out
(extremely) useful character sheets. My DM is suspicious of the program, now,
because of the situation listed in Q1. He audited the entire character before
the session, and found no other mistakes, but he still has his doubts. I told
him I'd audit him every single level, and let him do the same. That's the only
way I can keep using PCGen for this campaign, and I'm fine with that. I just
really, really wish there was a way for me to fix any rule-inconsistencies in an
easy way. Scribbling away the +4 for the Fort Save (see Q1) with a pencil was
"easy", but it would have been cleaner and more understandable if I could have
edited it on my computer first.

I will award exactly 2,000 Internets and 50,000xp to the first person who can
answer all of the questions listed above. Divide your share of this loot by 5
for every question you do answer (if you can't answer them all) and tell your DM
that Narrinian Goldvein III decided it was so. Then level up your Internets and
CL and love life. :)

Thanks in advance,
John

Well, you're off to a good start. Providing information with your problems
helps us to help you. And then there will be cake. ... Wait, wrong game.
Anyway, let's see how we can help...

I'm not seeing it. Made a LV 1 Wizard, all 10 stats and slapped a Rat
familiar on him. I'm only getting a +2.

Just out of curiosity, did you give him the feat "Great Fortitude"? That's
about the only other thing I could think of off the top of my head that should
be giving a "Misc" bonus.

No way that I know of.

I don't believe any of them do that. However, there is a way to add in the
information. In the inventory screen, first select "Ignore Cost" in the lower
right corner. Second, choose a great sword. Right-click on it and select in
the pop-up menu "Create Custom Item". A screen will pop up, and from there,
you can add various properties to it, such as adding a +1. For a property
that's not coded in, click on the SProp button. This will allow you to type
in what you want, such as "Lights up as a free action, Returns when thrown".

PCGen only includes sources that or OGL compliant, and every source we do
include is with permission. All of WotC's books are closed content, which
prevents us from supplying code for them. This is where you'll need to learn
PCGen's coding if you want to add your own stuff.

We give advice for helping to code sources on our List Help Y! group.
Questions you'd have should be directed there. Just don't ask for the item
directly. For example, if you wanted ask how to code a certain feat, like the
on you mentioned above, ask:
"How do I grant a +20 will save when a character is raging?"
...to which one of us might reply reply:
"The best way would be to code the feat to give the output that the character
gets a +20 Will save when raging. You could then add a MOD..."
...and so on.

We're glad you like it. Tell your DM he can use it to stat out NPCs,
especially the big tough ones.

One option here is that there is a troubleshooting HTML (aka standard)
output sheet that shows the breakdown of where things come from. That
might also help with your GMs suspicion of the program.

There is an output order column on the equipment tab, Simply change the
weapons you want to see to be 1, 2 and 3 in order or at least less than
any other weapons.

Cheers,
James.
