I am contemplating an OS change and am wondering whether PCGen has a
version that will work with Ubuntu LInux or similar flavors of Debian.

It is a Java app that works anywhere the JRE runs which includes quite a
few different distributions for Linux.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for volunteering!

Now for the hard part. I hand you over to Frank (our content lead)
who will send you a stack of information about what it is to be a
data/content monkey. If it still sounds like something you want to do
then all you need to do is get yourself a sourceforge user account,
email that to me and I'll add you to the project!

Oh and of course you get paid in bananas like everyone else :-)

Sounds interesting... What version of PCGen and Java are you using?
Which output shet did you use? Or was this on the preview tab?

It works fine with Ubuntu, but you will need to install Sun's JRE. I
think EasyUbuntu has this as one of the install options so you might
look into that after you get Ubuntu installed.

I've been using it on various flavors of Linux for years now (i.e. Red
7.X, Centos 3.X and Fedora ). My recomendation is to install the Sun
version of the jre as it seems run pcgen the best. The latest 1.5 Linux
version is what I am currently using. I've almost gotten to the point
of rolling an rpm for pcgen since I horse my OS around so much.

I find that PCGen works fine with IBM's JRE, too. I've used IBM's JRE on both
RHEL3 and Gentoo with PCGen with no significant problems.

Hi all.
I'm starting a new campaign and I was trying to put into practice
something like "package deals", used in Hero System. In essence, you
spend a certain amount of skill points, and you abtaing a little more
of them though in a fixed and linked manner.

For example, I have a Package deal called "Port labourer" by which you
get 2 points in User Rope, Swim, Profession(Sailor), Knowledge
(local), Survival (Natural Hazards) for 7 points.

I don't know how to implement this in PCGEn. If I make it a template,
I only get skill bonus, not real skill ranks. If I make it a Starting
kit, I would get a waring that I won't be able to buy all the skills.

In both cases, I'll have to tweak skill points manually.

Any suggestions?

Ciao, Marcello

If you use a kit you can set certain of the skills
granted as Free (they won't cost points).

Hello,

I've noticed that the nice D20 Modern PDF export gubbins includes the
Allegiances "box" but I can't find how to get the allegiance data into
a .pcg file. Is the current intention that we scribble the allegiances
down on a print using a pencil? Or is there a way to store the info so
that the PDF export can collect it?

Thanks in advance,

Yeah, i guess that's all good info i should have included.

I'm using PcGen 5.10.1, and i've got 4 different java version's in
my java directory,
j2re1.4.2_03
jdk1.5.0_06
jre1.5.0_03
jre1.5.0_06

I'm not sure which of those is my java version.

As far as where i'm seing the bug, it's in the preview tab, when I
export to PDF on any output sheet, it doesn't happen.

Where are the docs? I have looked around and can't find them. Maybe I am just
overlooking something obvious, but I can't find
anything.

I'm afraid I can't offer you another solution at the time. The field
in the sheet is meant to be penciled in.

The only other option you currently have would be to write your
allegiances in a Character Sheet Note that you can create on the
Description tab.

We're currently discussing a specification for a new tag that will
allow us to take user input, which would let us deal with this
problem, but better don't hold your breath waiting for that.

K,
maybe we (or... you, anyway!) should modify the home-page info here
(for those of you who read the email posts via the web) to indicate
when the next release will be. Would it also be helpful to provide a
link to anyone who reports a bug, so they can check on its status as
well?

And that sure is some set of leather armor! I tend to be very
magic-light in my campaigns.... :)

Awesome!

Given the info i gave you, what would the correct answer to "what
version of java do you have" have been? It'l save some time on future
bug reports.

Bug Status Link = good idea
next release date = maybe not so good idea?

While I as a consumer love it when I have a good idea when something
new is comming out, i know many developers who hate
having "consumers" or "end users" waiting on baited breath for a
release that's been dated.

As for the armor, it's for an NPC who's gonna be guiding the PC's
for a bit. Plus, I wanted to see just how epic an epic char could
be, he's a lvl 25 druid :)

Chao!

Open a command line and type: java -version

This will give you the version of your default installation.

Hi all,

Have added in a link to the roadmap where you can see when the next
release(s) are and what is going in them (and therefore the status of
the bugs etc).

I was curious if there was any documentation that would explain how
the PDF output sheets worked.

Specifically, I'm looking to have an output sheet where the equipment
and weight allowance pieces print on a separate page.

Thanks,

That's a FREQ to do one of these days. It never seems to get a high
priority. Your best bet is to take a look at fantasy_master_std.xslt
in the outputsheets\d20\fantasy\pdf directory. The xslt is not too
hard to follow.

PCGen will first create an XML character sheet by using the standard
export tokens and the base.xml output sheet. PCGen will then store the XML
character sheet in the tmp directory. It will then run an xslt
transformation with the character sheet you have selected (eg.
csheet_fantasy_std_blue.xslt) to create an XSL:FO document which it then
converts to PDF.

XSLT links:
   http://www.w3.org/TR/xslt
   http://www.zvon.org/xxl/XSLTreference/Output/index.html
   http://www.zvon.org/xxl/XSLTutorial/Output/index.html

XSL:FO links:
   http://www.w3.org/TR/xsl/
   http://www.zvon.org/xxl/xslfoReference/Output/index.html
   http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/

When doing a lot of work on the xslt sheets I tend to run pcgen, export a
character to PDF. Take a look in the temp directory (/tmp on unixes,
Documents and Settings\{user}\Local Settings\Temp on windows) There should
be a file something like currentPC_99999.xml. Copy this file to whereever
you are working and then run the FOP process from the commandline. That
way you do not need to have PCGen running to test your sheets, adn each
test does not need to wait for PCGen to export the XML file first.

99% of the functionality for the PDF sheets is stored in
fantast_master_std.xslt. The main layout is all at the top of the file,
and the templates for each of the blocks is stored lower down in the file.
Ideally each block should be factored out into it's own file but that is a
completly different task.

If all you want to do is force a page break before the equipment block
then have a look at the line "<xsl:template match="equipment">". In the
following line add the 'break-before="page"' attribute to the fo:block
element.

What Frugal typed below would actually be a very good start on the doc
for generating a PDF sheet. Could a tracker monkey add this to the
FREQ for documenting the PDF sheets? Then maybe a DOC monkey can start
on this.
