IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT PCGEN - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING!

When will 3.5e be supported in PCGen?
3.5e is supported in version 5.4 of PCGen, though support won't be complete
until the release of 5.6. Since PCGen is OGL compliant, we refer to 3.5e as
RSRD (Revised System Resource Document) that is the free version of the core
3.5e books that Wizards of the Coast produces. In the "Settings" menu of
PCGen, select the "Game Mode" menu item and you'll see how you can switch
between game modes like 3.5e and 3e. Depending upon which Game Mode you're in,
the list of books you can load will vary. We created a Game Mode for 3.5e
because there are a number of rules differences between it and 3e.

Where are Wizard's of the Coast's books and modules?
Those are handled under a special license by the gang at
www.codemonkeypublishing.com

Where are the Star Wars/Call of Cthulhu/Wheel of Time files?
Even though Wizards of the Coast produces those books, they don't own exclusive
rights to that material. We'll need to get permission from both Wizards and
the other copyright owner(s) of said material before we can include them
in PCGen. It is our intention to acquire this permission, but we're being
very careful about how we proceed to maximize our chance of success. We'll
keep everyone informed when anything worthy of reporting occurs. :)

PCGen is OGL (Open Gaming License). Versions 4.0.0 through 4.3.12 were
D20 compliant - this compliance was dropped with version 5.0 because we wanted
to better support publishers who were no D20 compliant.

To avoid some common hot-topics that have been beat to death, here
are some basic ground rules for posting on our yahoo board:

POSTING GUIDELINES

Because PCGEN is an e-mail community dedicated to the (but always fun)
discussion of PCGEN product, there are some ground rules which everyone
needs to follow. Please read the following document carefully, or you
will be jumped on by the soft pawed one! (that would be the Moderator).

Where should I post my question?
- If it's data syntax or building-your-own class/feat/race/equipment/etc
related, then post it at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PCGenListFileHelp
- If it's xml related, then post it at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pcgen-xml
- If it's anything else related to PCGen, then post it at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pcgen

Any special requirements if I'm reporting a bug, making a request or
suggestion?
Bugs: The title of the post must start with [BUG], and the body of the post
must contain the version of PCGen, your operating system version and a step-by-
step process to duplicate the bug. They get fixed much faster this way!

Feature Requests: The title of the post must start with [FREQ] (abbreviation
for feature request), and specific suggestions or requests are welcomed and
appreciated!

Documentation: The title of the post must start with [DOC] if you are
requesting clarification of documentation or if you have any suggestions about
improving the documentation.

Output/Character Sheets: The title of the post must start with [OS] if you're
commenting about the output sheets and want to make sure that the output sheet
monkeys notice your post.

Our hope is that this list will stay as a community of people willing
to share thoughts and ideas about various aspects of PCGEN; Criticism
and feedback on specific parts of PCGEN and any general issues with
PCGEN is very appropriate for this list and actively encouraged - provided
such feedback is well thought-out, rational, and promotes an open
discussion of the issue in question. Although this list is essentially
administered by those involved in the PCGEN project, posters will not be
removed from the list or blacklisted simply because they are critical of
a part of PCGEN or PCGEN in general.

An exception to this occurs in relations to trolling, flaming and
personal attacks. Simply put, trolling, flaming and personal attacks ARE NOT
tolerated on the PCGEN list. Posters who troll, flame or attack others
will be placed on REVIEW or removed from the list if such activity
continues. Wherever possible, the soft pawed one and/or other moderators
will intervene and try to nip flame wars in the bud before they spiral
out of control.

A few definitions:

Trolling: posting messages designed to draw an angry response from
those who read it

Flame: a sarcastic, biting message, which often attacks the
intelligence, education and/or perceptiveness of others and is usually designed
to
draw an angry response from them

Personal attack: A negative comment in a discussion, which is directed
at/or dealing with a person or persons instead of the issue at hand.
This includes flaming publishers, whether PCGEN supports them or not.
We are not a discussion board that allows slamming of publishers, they
have their own boards for that.

Remember that everyone on the list comes from a different background.
We have engineers, lawyers, college students, and high school-age
members who post on a variety of topics. Please respect the fact that their
opinions might be different from yours and move on. Many users also
come from non english backgrounds or countries, bear this in mind when
you wish to flame them for their spelling or grammer!

In addition, please adhere to the following rules of etiquette:

1) Please refrain from using profanity and other insulting language in
your posts. This is to include starring out of letters or other forms
of self-censorship.

2) When responding to a post, make sure to quote only what is required.
In general, do not quote more than you actually contribute.

3) Do not make "me too" posts.

4) If a post begins to move off of its original topic, PLEASE GIVE IT
A NEW SUBJECT (and include [OT] in the subject header).
(This is an especially important rule as the PCGEN staff
who are on the list have a limited amount of time in which to read the
messages sent to it.)

4a) If an OT subject carries on too long a Moderator may step in and request
the contributers to the thread take it off-list.

5) If you're asking a Code Monkey Publising question, post it on their boards
at www.codemonkeypublishing.com in the Zoo Grafitti area (forums)

6) If it is about IP/Business/CMP vs PCGEN etc etc, then think
twice about posting, in fact think 3 times about it. If you are
keen to have such discussion, either do so @ CMP boards or start your
own Y! group (I will permit advertising of that group on this board)
8-)

7) Please keep your sig files reasonable in length. Five to six lines
is considered reasonable.

8) Please do not post virus warnings without the prior approval of the
list staff.

9) When quoting, please remove the two pages of ads that appear from
various web-based email clients.

Thanks.

I have a Wizard/Conjurer and I am using a few varient rules. Instead
of trying to make a a whole new class I was just going to take the
feat that would make the variant rule work.

I am trying to take Augment Summoning. In the variant rule I would
get it instead of the Scribe scroll feat. This feat requires Spell
Focus:Conjuration as a pre-req. So I went into the Pref and checked
the by-pass feat pre-req box clicked ok and restarted PCGen.
It still will not alow me to take this feat. Do I have to start all
over from scratch?

I also tried copying the wizard and modifying it using the LST
editors and they still don't seem to be working quite right so I gave
up that battle :-) I am not that good at doing this stuff by hand so
I was trying to take the easy way out.

Any help would be appreciated. Maybe I am missing another step or
something.

Thanks,

If you look here:
http://rpg.plambert.net/pcgen/current/_logs/autobuild.log
You'll see the build is failing in the 'build_pcgen' phase.

So then you look here:
http://rpg.plambert.net/pcgen/current/_logs/build_pcgen.log
And you'll see:

[javac] Compiling 880 source files to
/usr~/runtime_pcgen/cvsroot/pcgen/build
     [javac]
/usr~/runtime_pcgen/cvsroot/pcgen/src/java/pcgen/util/PJEP.java:26:
package org.nfunk.jep does not exist
     [javac] import org.nfunk.jep.JEP;

So then you figure out why it's failing. If there's a library that was
once optional for building that is now required, you let me know what it
is, where to get it, and where to put it. If there's a developer who
isn't done inserting some changes, you wait for them to finish. And if
there's no obvious reason it's failing, and a fresh cvs checkout on your
local box builds fine, you email me and ask me to clear it out and start
it over.

In this case, I'm not sure what the problem might be. I did have to
stop the build mid-cvs-update yesterday afternoon for a system upgrade,
so it may be in a weird state. I'll clear out the cvs directory and let
it start over, and we'll see if that helps.

Someone let me know if it continues to fail?

As of this morning it is still failing.

Last week, someone told another person that they need to get an
undated group of library files from sourceforge. I'm not sure why they
thought he needed them. Could that be the problem here? (I doubt it
but have no idea how the autobuild system is setup.)

Do you know if the other alignment-based negativbes are working
correctly also? None of them were giving the neg-level for the correct
alignments.

This one's definitely my fault. I added JEP back to the mix (undoing an
earlier change) at the request of folks on the SF forums. But it required a
change to build.xml. I'd guess that's why the builds are failing -- because the
autobuild is still using the previous build.xml. I e-mailed you Saturday, but
perhaps you didn't get my e-mail.

IIRC those aren't Open Gaming Content and so, by default, are not included with
PCGen. You can code them up yourselves (look at the monster lst files and the
docs for this) or get the files from codemonkeypublishing.com who have the
permission of WotC to create files with non-OGC material.

That's correct. The gith, illithid, beholders and blink dogs (among
others) aren't OGC. Because of this, PCGen can't distribute them.
CMP is a licensee of WotC, and, as such, is allowed to distribute,
for a cost, this material.

The full list that's not OGC? I really don't know. I, personally,
haven't gone through the RSRD ( http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?
x=d20/article/srd35 ) to find out what's not been included.

Here's my problem. I'm trying to write a custom feat that would work just
like Weapon Finesse,
but apply the bonus to DAMAGE. This is the BONUS tag used for the Weapon
Finesse:

BONUS:COMBAT|TOHIT.Finesseable|(((STRMAXDEX)-STR)+SHIELDACCHECK)|TYPE=NotRanged

If I take exactly the same syntax and replace the bonus type TOHIT for
DAMAGE, it does not work properly:

BONUS:COMBAT|DAMAGE.Finesseable|(((STRMAXDEX)-STR)+SHIELDACCHECK)|TYPE=NotRanged

Here's what does not work:
1- Bonus Damage does not apply to unarmed
2- Bonus Damage should not apply to Dagger (Thrown), but it does
3- Bonus Damage does not apply to specific finesseable weapons, like
Sunblade or Dagger of Venom.

There seems to be a shortcut coded in the finesse type definition, because
none of this happens when using
the BONUS:COMBAT|TOHIT.Finesseable. It is tied to the WIELDCATEGORY:Light
definition in the
\system\gameModes\35e\miscinfo.lst where you find FINESSABLE:Yes. Removing
the FINESABLE tag
or correcting the typo (FINESSEABLE) will break the BONUS:COMBAT|TOHIT tag.

The same was happening with the old syntax
BONUS:DAMAGE|TYPE.Finesseable. I also tried
BONUS:COMBAT|DAMAGE.Finesseable,DAMAGE.NotRanged|(((STRMAXDEX)-STR)+SHIELDACCHEC\
K)
and still get the same results.

Thanks for helping me out,

Simon

Under all versions of Windows you require the Java Runtime Environment to
make use of Java programs, if on running the bat file to load the program
you get a report of Java being an unrecognised application, you'll need to
head to the Sun microsystems website and get the version you need, which is
always an exhilarating experience.

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html -
15c7d66d.jpg
J2SE v1.4.2_04 being the latest stable version at this time (1.5 is out but
we're still being told of some interesting bugs on the sun developer
forums). Unless you're intending to develop your own applications using
Java, you should only need the JRE download, it's about half way down the page.

ofrecer sera bien recibida

Ok, Hopefully I translated this right and you can read english but just
weren't comfortable posting in english.
There are some people working to translate PCGen into other languages,
but I do not know the specific details. There may already be someone
working on a Spanish Translation, if so hopefully they have read this
and will get into contact with you. If you would like to start doing
the translation on your own feel free.

Saludos

Not knowing java code can be a problem when translating...Hopefully
someone else is already working on this and will chime in here soon.
It's been a long time since I've used Spanish....starting to get a
headache remembering the translating.

Hola:
traducirlo.
Espero que esto ayude.

For some of the datasets I have made I found it a good idea to write read me
files for them detailing workarounds needed to get PCGen to do something
funky the publishers thought up. I'd guess most users will not root around
in the data folder and may never come across such a file.

The idea I have is to add a button in the source tab labeled "Source
Information" maybe next to the Website button. When pressed this button
would look for a file named readme.html in the same directory as the .pcc
file and load it if found. The readme.html file could contain all the
instructions on how to get the most out of the dataset as well detailing
things that can't be done because of code issues.

I can think of a few cases where this might have helped elevate some
confusion, such as the way occupations are handled in the Modern gamemode.

Perhaps we could add a .pcc tag for this, SOURCEINFO, which would set the
file to be used. This has the advantage of letting the author name the file
whatever they wanted, and if the tag could take full web addresses the file
could live somewhere on the internet.
