Hell, anyone hiring in Austin, TX???

It could be much worse. I moved away from my family and friends to work for AOL
in
their corporate HQ. Got laid off 20 months later, 6-weeks after my son was
born.

That was September 2001. Haven't been back to work since, really. Been raising
my
son. Finally got moved back to "home" in Austin, TX, September 2002.

As long as you're near friends and family, you'll do fine. Keep your chin up
and stay
productive.

Not so much wind, but the most amazing display of lightning that I've
seen in a while! Went on for over an hour - lots of fun to watch.
Just wanted to power everything down so I minimized my risk of losing
anything. I'll try to patch 5.0 and put out the beta release tonight.

Just want to offer up a supportive "sorry to hear that" to all the
folks that have been talking about being laid off and/or are still
out of work.

Been through it myself recently (out 6/01 - 5/02) and it was *not* a
fun experience. And I am one of the lucky ones I know of here in
Minneapolis, as my little brother and 4 of my close friends are
*still* out of work.

Hope the situation(s) don't last long & thinks look up for everyone.

Best Wishes

On the synergy tab for skills, don't take the skill off the list when
you add a synergy bonus. My DM has decided that every 10 points above
5, i.e. 15, 25, 35, that it should give an additional +1, so that way
I can add those to using the LST editor.

Small issue: PCGEN is not CMP.

CMP is not PCGEN.

CMP produces products compatable with PCGEN, much like many software
companies produce products compatable with windows.

If you don't like the service you get from PCGEN, we'll be glad to
refund your money.

For that matter, that would help with ELH support (coming to an SRD
near you soon (hopefully by July)). However, with that one, its
every 20 gives you +2 (at least, I think so, don't have my books in
front of me). Actually, I like your DM's ruling better.

Some years ago I was talking to a friend on the phone during a
thunderstorm. Thunder was really frequent; between 'local' and 'phone'
it was almost a constant rumbling. Then there was a gods-awful *boom*
through the phone, and a couple seconds later I heard it through the
window.

He looked out the window and said "there's a *stump* on fire where there
used to be a tree." "Whoa. That wouldn't been cool to actually *see*.
At least if you were under cover." "Bugger that, it would've been
*really* cool to see from in the tree..."

Jas... he needs his priorities adjusted. I mean, he might be right, but
it's not the sort of thing I'd want to test, y'know?

Well put. Maybe we should borrow this phrasing for the faq? Or the
pcgen home page?

> If you don't like the service you get from PCGEN, we'll be glad to

It would do everyone a world of good to remember that this is a
project staffed entirely by volunteers, working on this because it's
fun. If it becomes un-fun, well... (Also, do some quick math on the
potential profit of CMP's data sets and you'll see that that's pretty
much a volunteer project as well.)

While I tend to leave the administration entirely in Karianna's
capable (and soft :) paws, I do want to remind everyone of item 5 and
6 of the Posting Guidelines found in the State O Pcgen document that
is regularly sent to this group, and is also available through this
atrociously long link:

PXlAtgpuHczAD_gN6yEJEw87xsZ-Tl9-v3Y9uCDjjvYhBKjuAc/State_O_PCGen

I believe that this discussion, if it should be continued at all,
should be moved elsewhere, perhaps CMP's forums?

If PCGen and CMP are different entities, should CMP have forums dedicated to

There's nothing wrong with having forums for PCGen, and since CMP
does have products that are compatible with PCGen, it makes sense to
have a place to collect its customers thoughts on bugs/freqs/etc,
does it not? I plan on running PCGen with the same iron hand I

Okay, the synergy tab threw me for a loop till I figured that it's
actually backwards from what I was thinking. My DM has a bunch of
specialized categories under several of the knowledge skills, like
Arcana, is broken down into each of the schools, and Nature is broke
down into Anatomy, Biology etc. Well each of the sub classes give a
synergy bonus to a the parent skill. The way the synergy tag is
written I can never give a synergy bonus to an existing skill, like
Know(Arcana) with out either copying the parent, or making a MOD to
it, right? Shouldn't the tag be written so that you add it to the
skill that "gives" the synergy bonus instead of the one that
"receives" it, that would make it easier to create custom synergy
bonuses.

It would be better to create a new skill and name it blah.MOD. Yes,
you can do that in the lst editor and it would work just like you did
it yourself. I have MODed Wizard just like that myself. :)

well, except that it's the 'target skill' that documents the synergy
bonus.

What I'd like to see is either breaking synergy bonuses out of the
skills entirely, as in (greatly abbreviated XML below):

   <skill id="skill.heal" />
   <skill id="skill.herbalism" />

   <synergy target="skill.heal" source="skill.herbalism" />
     <!-- or -->
   <bonus target="skill.heal" source="skill.herbalism" type="synergy" />

Or, like one person suggested, allow it to be defined in either place
(to put it in context, IIRC he was talking about assignment of spells to
class spell lists); you'd end up with:

   <skill id="skill.heal">
     <bonus type="synergy">
       <preskill refid="skill.herbalism" min="5" />
     </bonus>
   </skill>

     <!-- or -->

   <skill id="skill.herbalism">
     <bonus refid="skill.heal" type="synergy">
       <preskill refid="skill.herbalism" min="5" />
     </bonus>
   </skill>

I'm not satisfied with the latter examples, though. Not only the syntax
not as elegant as I like, but I don't like being able to define things
in more than one place. I like simple; if you can define it only in one
place or one way, it limits the ways things can go wrong.

I just tested this out with the Linux version of phoenix 0.5 and
everything was fine. Can someone else go download the windows version
and try it? (The name was actually changed to firebird because phoenix
was already taken...on old unix browser)

Hi, I'm a big Star Wars RPG Fan, but not a as much into DnD. I was
wondering what version of PCGEN was best for Star Wars, and when Star
Wars will be added to more recent versions.

Also, how do you add Trianii, and custom races?

I wish they were hireing in Austin, TX,
Lost my home there because of this down turn and Lack of jobs there.

I miss Austin. (living in the small town of sundown right now 1200 people) .

Although I do have a few job prospects out here, it is 1/3 of what I use
to make.

This economy has to start turning around soon.

::sigh::

Please read the State of PCGen file that is included when you join
the group, or can be found in the Files section of the Y! Group (
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pcgen/files/ ).

Now, that being said. SW is closed content. PCGen deals in open
material (like the SRD ( http://www.wizards.com/D20/article.asp?
x=srd ) or MSRD ( http://www.wizards.com/D20/article.asp?x=msrd )),
or material that we have special permission from the publisher. Even
though WotC published the SW books, they don't own the IP copyrights
to it, LucasFilm does. So, that means that PCGen would need to get
permission from 2 separate groups to distribute the files for
free...which is unlikely IMO.

Now, Code Monkey Publishing ( http://www.codemonkeypublishing.com )
has reached an agreement with WotC to produce, for a fee, the closed
material solely owned by WotC (like the splat books, ELH, Savage
Species, the Core Rulebooks, etc.) Now, Call of Cthulu, Wheel of
Time and Star Wars, are all published by WotC, but other licensing
agreements are involved here. CMP will need to talk with the other
parties involved (Chaosium, Robert Jordan and LucasFilm respectively)
to reach a licensing agreement. It is my understanding (and I could
be mistaken) that CMP will look into those separate licenses, but
they are more focused on the WotC-only books and retooling eTools.

Now, to your questions about versions of PCGen and Star Wars. There
is nothing stopping you in creating your own data files from those
books, but you can't distribute them. There are numerous editors
within PCGen to aid in the creating of files.

Does that help?

I agree. However, my MBA profs were predicting that it should turn
around 1Q this year, which turns out that they were mistaken.

Also note that editing the actual LST file and writing the synergy tag
backwards does NOT add a synergy bonus to the parent skill like one
would think :(

Huh?  In either Skill....

BONUS:SKILL|<name of skill to get teh bonus>|<synergy
bonus>|TYPE=Synergy.STACK|PRESKILL:1,<name of skill that required ranks
grant the bonus>=<number of ranks required>

will work. So I can put
BONUS:SKILL|MyFirstSkill|2|TYPE=Synergy.STACK|PRESKILL:1,MySecondSkill=5
In EITHER skill, and it will grant the bonus to MyFirstSkill, so long as I
have 5 ranks in MySecondSkill.

Heck, you could move them all to a template if you wanted, that way you
could easily turn the Synergy bonuses on or off.....

Ah, okay. I'd only seen it in the target skill and it didn't leap out
of the doco at me.
