Two questions for creating a feats for psionic characters:

How could I codify I feat which will let a psion or PSW character choose
any one new
psionic power up to the maximum level available (in fact making one new
spell slot
available up to the maximum spell level known at the moment the feat is
chosen)...

(nota: this is **not** exactly the same question I asked some days ago...)

I guess this to be a question for Eric?

Well, this is not entirely accurate the documentation is missing what I
consider quite a lot in regards tags and formatting thereof. And he did
say a list of ALL; the documentation is definitely NOT comprehensive.

Without assistance from this mailing list or a good example in an
already existing data file it is impossible to figure out how to
accomplish many things just from the documentation alone.

I think also, the request was for just a "list" rather then the multiple
pages of tags with so many numerous examples and the like that you need
to do a lot of scrolling up and down to scan the entire set of tags. I
too often think it would be "handy" just to have a brief list for each
category, all on one page in order to be allow a "quick glance" to find
what is needed. (In that respect, I think the old table-format
documentation was more useful)

Speaking of this, there are also quite a few errors in the documentation
regarding formatting of several tags and the data which follows, such as
the example showing a pipe where in fact a comma is required, or
omitting part of a tag that is necessary, or showing a equals sign where
one needs to actually use a period, etc. I spent the holiday weekend
creating all of the lst files for several new sourcebooks that I
recently purchased and stumbled on a fair number of these errors; wish
I'd been a bit less focused on what I was working on and actually taken
the time to keep track of the errors and omissions that I found. I
apologize for my lack of forethought in that I didn't keep track at all.

While not directly relevant to your problem, it's possible to edit
the options.ini file and simply delete the line beginning with
pcgen.files.characters while pcgen is not running.

The official line on options.ini problems is still 'delete it'. We
don't support human (or inhuman ;-) editing of that file in any way
shape or manner.

Odds are that some calculations are being done as doubles or floats,
who do not handle fractions properly. The way I solved part of that
problem way back when was to use BigDecimal instead, but obviously
it's not being done everywhere (or maybe I simply didn't do
everything right. :)

Post it as a bug report (if you want to dig into the code it's most
likely in either core/Equipment.java or gui/InfoEquipment.java that
the problems appear.)

That was more true in the past - lately we've had a good crew of Doc
Monkeys working to make sure that all the tags are accounted for and
that they work as advertised. At this point in time I'm fairly
certain that all (or at least 99.9% of them!) the tags are listed.
For each file type (e.g. feats) there are 2 files you'd need to look
in - 1 for the file type specifically (the feat file) and the global
one.

Very true - I'm not sure I've ever read any documentation that
explained everything fully enough. The data files themselves are a
wonderful working example for just about all the tags, so you can
see how the tag is actually used. Many tags have many variations
available - not all of the variations are used in the datafiles, but
at least a couple of examples should give you enough to start.

We're quickly approaching a point where I don't think many new
significant tags will be required. Then it will be more appropriate
to create a file which lists all the tags and tokens and can link
you to a fuller description.

Just saying "there are errors in the documentation!" is likely to
hurt the feelings of the doc monkeys who have spent so much time and
energy on vastly improving the condition of it. Code Monkeys should
never be left to document what they write - that's not their
strength, and who wants to do something they're not good at??? ;)
As you note, it would be better to give a list of the errors so the
Doc Monkeys know what needs fixing. I don't think anyone would
maintain that the documentation is perfect, but the scope of it is
big enough that if you don't know exactly what's in error, it's not
worth spending much time looking through the haystack. If you or
anyone else comes across something where you think the documentation
is insufficient, wrong or entirely missing, let us know! The Doc
Monkeys take great pride in their work, and they're happy to make it
better. The Data Monkeys appreciate the greatly improved status of
the documentation because that means training new data monkeys is
even easier and less time consuming. The Code Monkeys are happy
because they have to spend less time spelunking through the code to
figure out how that tag 'really' works!

So.... telling someone to look in the documentation isn't a bogus
answer - if they don't find what they're looking for, then that
alone tells us that maybe the documentation could use some TLC in
that area.

crude codemonkey documentation follows, taken directly from the comments
in exporthandler.java; a doccumentation monkey may want to tidy this up
and add it to the docs.

Syntax: SKILL%.UNTRAINEDfoo,bar
where foo and bar are optional strings of unfixed length.

Behavior: prints out foo if the skill is usable untrained,
bar if not usable untrained.
if bar is not supplied, nothing is printed if trained only, and foo is
printed if usable untrained. If neither foo nor bar are supplied,
nothing is output and the output sheet wastes processor cycles.

Syntax: SKILL%.ACPfoo,bar,baz,bot
where foo, bar, baz, and bot are strings of unfixed length.

Behavior: tests for armor check penalty interaction with this skill.
foo is printed if the skill is not affected by ACP.
bar is printed if the skill is affected by ACP.
baz is printed if the skill is only affected by ACP if the user is untrained
bot is printed if the skill has the special weight penalty (like Swim)

neglected to mention that ACP has the same response to being short on
tokens that UNTRAINED does: it ignores them, starting with bot and
working backwards.

Actually, it outputs based on the old UNTRAINED tag, vis a vis a Y or N.

That will be nice! BTW, I meant no slight in regards to this. I wasn't
implying that this is what the doc's currently "should" have, but rather
what I believe the original poster was looking for.

Yes, I do apologize for not keeping track better of where I found
mistakes. I've been a user of PCGen practically since the program was
first made available to us over the internet. During this time I have
always made an effort to post here any problems, errors, or what have
you that I find in order to help the team of you (previously just the
individual) working on it.

As I see it, this wonderful program is a tremendous tool for myself and
the players in my game and I'm extremely grateful for all of those who
work so hard to make it available for us. Because I can't consistently
devote any portion of time to projects such as this, I have not
volunteered my time to directly help y'all -- letting you know through
this list about any problems I find is what I consider the little bit
that I CAN do to help.

And I will agree, the documentation is very comprehensive (just not 100
percent complete...yet). But then, this can be also said regarding the
program itself, as y'all are continuously working on, fixing, tweaking
and improving upon it. Though this can occasionally create some
complications or confusion for users, I'd say that it's a good thing,
eh? ;-)

another question for a feat:

let's say a feat provides a +2 AC each time you choose the feat. I tried the
following but
it doesn't work...

NameOfMyFeat TYPE:Psionic PREVARGTEQ:Manifester,1
DESC:MyDescription MULT:YES
STACK:YES BONUS:COMBAT|AC|2|TYPE=Enhancement CHOOSE:+2 AC

in fact, it will give the +2 AC bonus the first time when chosen, but not
another +2 bonus
when chosen a second time

could you provide a hint please? :-)

This is because by the rules themselves, enhancement bonuses do not
stack; each time you add the feat you are adding a new +2 enhancement
bonus. Although you are specifying the proper tag in the feat that says
the FEAT stacks, the basic rules of the game regarding that type of
bonus says otherwise. Therefore, you end up only getting the effect of
one of the bonuses, no matter how many times you add it.

I think what you'd want to do is use COUNT to determine how many times
the feat has been selected and add a bonus of 2* this value.

Subject: File - Welcome
pcgen@yahoogroups.com
Send Email Send Email

Welcome!

What is PCGen?
PCGen is a character generator and maintenance program aimed at supporting any
and all d20 games. PCGen is meant to be easy to modify to suit your own
campaign, and users are encouraged to share their creations. Our highest
priority is supporting published d20 material - our secondary goal is to
support as many houserules as possible.

Is PCGen OGL or D20?
As of version 4.0.0, PCGen is OGL and D20 compliant. We are in regular contact
with Wizards of the Coast to make sure we stay that way.

Where is Wotc's non-SRD material?
Wotc has told us that once we are OGL and D20 compliant they will discuss
with us the possibility of getting permission to include all their non-SRD
material. We are working at full speed to help make that come true! :)
Wotc has been very gracious with us and helpful in explaining what changes are
necessary for both OGL and D20 compliance. We will definitely keep everyone
appraised of any developments in our discussions with Wotc.

For D20 Games Publishers:
Please read our OpenLetter to all D20 Games Publishers at
http://pcgen.sourceforge.net/OpenLetter.php
We'd love to convert your material for use with PCGen. Once we have your
permission we'll be glad to work up the files and then send them to you
for your approval before we include them in any release. This is a free
way for your material to get widespread use without without giving out so much
detail that purchasing the material is no longer necessary. Email me
(merton_monk@... Bryan McRoberts) or post on our yahoo message board if
you'd like more information.

Where are the official releases of PCGen?
Currently PCGen is released at http://pcgen.sourceforge.net

How often are releases?
We try to put out a beta release every week. We put out a production release
whenever we reach a significant milestone in terms of functionality and we
certify that the release is stable after rigorous testing.

When will you support my favorite d20 book?
We try to get everything in that we can as quickly as we can. We've made our
process more formal as our project has matured, so now we have "data monkeys"
who test the data, then send it to the publisher for their approval before it
gets included in our releases. This takes a bit of time and we only have so
many monkeys working on the data, so if you want to jump in and help out on the
book(s) you're specifically interested in, post a note about it on the message
board and we'll put you to work!

Where can I discuss PCGen and interact with the developers?
If you login to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pcgen you can check out the PCGen
page from which you can view and post Messages. If you have any questions about
PCGen, that's the place to send your question. Most of the developers hang out
there on a regular basis, and a number of other very involved non-developers
are also available to answer any questions you might have.

Is there a FAQ for PCGen?
There's one in the documentation, which is largely based on a fan created one at
http://pedertest.officeline.no/pcgen/
and if you have any questions that aren't covered there that you think should
be - let him or us know! We want to make learning how to use PCGen as easy and
frustration free as possible.

Where/How do I report Bugs or request features?
You can submit a bug either by posting a message to the yahoo group with [BUG
REPORT] in its title, or by going to Bug page at the sourceforge site and
entering a bug there directly. We commonly refer to the feature requests as
FREQ for short, and you can either post a message with [FREQ] in the title or
enter it directly in the FREQ list at the sourceforge site. In both cases, the
more detailed a bug/FREQ is, the more likely it will be addressed in the near
future. We prefer FREQs be posted at the yahoo group initially so others can
help iron out any details or brainstorm on how to improve the functionality.

What do I need to run PCGen?
PCGen requires Java JRE 1.3 (this can be found at www.sun.com), which means it
will run on any OS that supports that version of Java. This means that Max OS
8 & 9 users will need to have Virtual PC since those OSes only support Java
1.1.8. There are 3 zip files which make up a PCGen release. Unzip all three
files part2of2) into the same directory and you're good to go. Java 1.4 is now
available from Sun for most platforms (except Mac OS X), and it seems to run
java better, so we recommend that for users. Development is currently being
done using java 1.3, so you can use that if that's what you already have. We'll
convert our development to use java 1.4 once Mac OS X also supports it.

What's available at the yahoo site?
In the Files page there are a number of folders you should know about - there's
Campaign+Central folder where lots of user added Campaigns are available.
There's a folder for new character sheet templates that aren't
included in the standard releases, and there's a folder for Character PCG files
when users have problems that they need help diagnosing. Users who want to send
in corrections or updates to anything that's included in the official releases
of PCGen should upload those files to
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?atid=450173&group_id=36698&func=browse where one
of us, including our very own
Portal to the Negative Plane, will make sure it gets included in the next
release.

Is there an "on-line" version of the documentation?
Yes - at
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/pcgendocs/docs/indexma\
in.htm?rev=HEAD&content-type=text/html
There's a "Troubleshooting" guide there if you have any trouble getting PCGen
to run.

I've never had it cause a blue screen, but I have had the machine 'hang' for
practical purposes. Basically what was happening was the program would
go into a 'busy' state, change the cursor, and forever be flip-flopping
between
busy and ready. Try turning off the experimental wait cursor as the first
thing
you do when you start PCGen.

Or, since you're having problems with the preferences menu also, you can try
editing your options.ini -- look for pcgen.options.useExperimentalCursor
and change it to false instead of true, i.e.

pcgen.options.useExperimentalCursor=false

Hopefully, this will make everything happy again.

How about putting a link to this this faq on the project homepage:
http://pcgen.sourceforge.net

That would be a service to newcoming users, and perhaps it will also
reduce the amount of noise on this list.

This may also be a memory problem. Java is a memory hog, and if you
have a low amount of memory or you have a bad memory stick this could
be the cause.

Jonas,

I looked into the code (gui/Utility.java) and BigDecimal is an import
from java.math.BigDecimal. Digging out my Java 2 books (ack!) and
visiting the docs site, I see that BigDecimal is a native class. In
the same file, there is a "trimZeros" call that is used....but that
appears to not be part of the standard class.

The BigDecimal class DOES have a "setScale" method that has two
different implementations. Perhaps the "setScale" should be used
instead of "trimZeros"? That would eliminate some extra code along
the way too....

I guess I don't quite understand why there is work with this type of
number. Once the cost is set and once a count is determined, the cost
would never have a variation farther from 0.00 than 0.01 (meaning, no
0.0001 types of values) so anything else should never be used.

Alternatively, a new data type can be defined that has a limit on the
number of decimal places. I know that this would be the more complex
way to do it, but it's one idea and it would be consistant across the
application.

I'll go out and file a bug report and refer to this post within the
report... Let me know if there is anything else I can dig up or do to
help.

why would we never have a variation farther than two decimal places? I
can define a unit of currency, call it the haypenny, and assign it the
value 0.005 if I wish. In some settings, especially those based around
1800's britain or america, that kind of fraction is desireable.

Not sure if this has come up before but I am having a problem with
Pcgen adding ac correctly. I used a CR14 monster with 17HD size Huge
and an advancment of 18HD to 25HD(hugh), 26HD to 51HD(Gargantuan). I
incressed the HD 34. That changed its size to Gargantuan.
It starts with AC: 28(-2size,+4dex,+16natural)
Pcgen reported it at A:26(-4size,+4dex,+16natural)
My understanding is For a size incress from Hugh to Gargantuan Dex
would stay the same (check)-2 to AC bringing it to -4(check) And
adding 4 to natural armor (not check).

No matter what monster or size I started with Natural armor never
incressed. Am I doing some thing wrong?

I took a second look to make sure I war doing everything right. It
still looks right but I also found the following.

Str does not add when size incressed.
Starting skill points are not enough to put skill at source listed
amount.
It shows ATT at 8 but you can not purchase the feat Improved crit
because it shows the prereq of ATT=8 as not met.
These items may be listed some where but I could not find them.
Is there a bug list some place I could look so I don't repost a bug.

yet another new output tag

STATx.LEVELy

x = stat number
y = level (0+)

add .NOEQUIP to remove bonuses from equipment
add .NOPOST to remove stat increases after level up

NOTE: This will only show "correct" values for characters created
with a recent (read the next alpha) copy of PCGen. Older versions
will not haved saved the stat mods by level.

I have not delved into this too much yet, but I am trying to add in
the following that my character now has.

It is +2 full plate that has spell resistance of 13 and also gives
my cleric access to the travel domain (which he doesn't have at this
moment, or can he get with his diety).

Is there a way to add in the power to give access to another domain
for the armor?

The version that I am currently running is 2.4.7.

Thanks for any help on this.
