Hi,

Geez, Yahoo is hating me today, I still don't see the original message I
approved :(

James's solution is an excellent one but I'll add a couple more for your
consideration.

Another couple of solutions:
1) Put the stat blocks in the character Bio or Description field, an excellent
place to locate the
critters
2) Make a cheat sheet (One of my players did this for their summons, included
everything they could
summon)

Some of those cheat sheets are already floating around the net if you
search. I found one at one point.

Happy summoning,

I just started using PCGen, and I found this workaround for the character I
was trying to create.

The Protection Domain has a Defense Subdomain, and the Defense Subdomain
replaces the 1st-level domain spell with Shield. But this would not show up
for me in the spell list.

I added "|Cleric=10" to the Shield entry in the main spell list, and it
then showed up for my 1st-level Cleric with the Defense Subdomain selected.

If there's a better way to do that, please let me know.

Thanks!

Hi,

I just want to add one race to the Pathfinder source. I'm DMing for a small
group of my friends and one of them is a fairy. I was using a bunch of excel
based generators before someone pointed me to this fantastic little program and
now I just want to consolidate all my players sheets.

I've tried doing this on my own but it is just a little over my head. I wanted
to implement this http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Fairies_(3.5e_Race). If anyone
could help me through it or do it for me I would be quite thankful.

This is the email I check most regularly: mjsims24@...

Thanks

You can easily swap out the SAB and the two bonus tags and go with
ABILITY:Special
Ability|AUTOMATIC|Unearthly Grace ~ Fairy

But then you need to add this to your ability file:

Unearthly Grace KEY:Unearthly Grace ~ Fairy CATEGORY:Special Ability
TYPE:SpecialQuality.Supernatural BONUS:CHECKS|ALL|CHA/2
BONUS:COMBAT|AC|CHA/2 DESC:A Fairy

deflection bonus
<http://www.dandwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Deflection_bonus&action=edit&redlink=\
1> to her Armor
Class <http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Armor_Class>.

The first portion goes into a RACE file, if you opt to use the ability which is
the new standard,
that needs to go in an ability file. You can find a homebrew folder in your
pcgen install location,
data/homebrew there is one for 3.5 use, and another made for Pathfinder.

Do Note: You'll need to have Skill Focus Ability Pool set up if you aren't using
6.00, or quite
possibly the next release of 6.00.1 (My memory of when I added that is a bit
vague). If it doesn't
work, 'ADD:FEAT|Skill Focus' should do the trick. Good luck in your homebrew
endeavors!

Cheers,

In my custom campaign, I have a new Craft skill. the code line is:
Craft (Weaver) KEYSTAT:INT USEUNTRAINED:NO ACHECK:NO TYPE:Craft

it shows up in the skill list, as type: craft. But, a cleric character when
selecting it, isn't getting the class skill bonus, but it should get that bonus
for all craft skills. How do I get the custom skill to properly act as a class
skill?
Do I need to make a 'custom cleric' and add it as a class skill? Doesn't seem
that I should have to do that.

You need to add the Bonus statement to the skill. I also dropped the
Accheck and added .Intelligence to the Type. Here is the completed

TYPE:Craft.Intelligence

Hi,

I presume this is for Pathfinder?

If you take a look at the existing skills you will see this little segment,
which is the secret to that:

BONUS:SKILL|Craft (Baskets)|3|TYPE=ClassSkill|PRECSKILL:1,Craft
(Baskets)|PRESKILL:1,Craft (Baskets)=1

It would be nice if we could automate that sort of thing, but for now the above
works. If you need
further assistance, please join us over on PCGen List File Help.

Cheers,

I have generated a 1st lvl gladiator but seem to have a few problems.

- Perform (act, comedy, and dance) do not seem to be listed as class skills.

- I do not seem to get the Performance Weapon Mastery feat given automatically.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance

It is a bug.

I am assuming that you are using PCGen 6.00.0, and have loaded the Core
Rulebook, APG, and UC.

Playing Pathfinder for the first time. The GM has denoted the usable source
material and I found your PCGen app. Awesome.

I download it and since I have the list of sources allowed I want to enter them.

I try to add my sources using either the initial load source option which
confusingly offers me only a toggle choice when I want several. Deeming that
ineffective or less than best at least I go on into the app choosing
Sources->Select Sources which does seem right.

Even though the PCGen title bar has pathfinder in it, I still have to tell it
the game system again (which confuses me) in the combo box on the advanced tab.
Are there two game system choices? Could we name that something else? <shiver>
Anyway, I choose Pathfinder RPG again.

I know my sources so I start happily adding them from the right list to the
left. Fail. Message:

"prereqs for this campaign have not fulfilled."

Leaving aside the incorrect English, this error message helps me not in the
least. So what do I have to go on? The word campaign suggests something the
app understands so I look for it. No top level menu back in the app has any
reference to the word campaign. Dead end.

I assume that this bad error message means that a source which is a prerequisite
for this source has not been included yet so this one cant be. Where is a
dialog choice that offers this" Include them? Yes button, no button? So
simple! In frustration, I try including random sources guessing which it might
be that is needed. None seem to work or to de-red the one I want. Dead end
again.

Admittedly, this is a hard line position to take, but I do. I learn by doing
and by being taught. I detest research and a tool is only useful if it is
intuitive and leads you through its successful use, especially software. You,
the experts, are presumably well aware of what is wrong. Instead of telling me
in a way that helps me use your tool effectively, you give me bad English error
messages that offer me no choices and point me in no app specific direction. I
am a developer myself with over 30 years experience so I am at least vaguely
aware of the situation here.

You can better than that. Even for freeware.

Can anyone please tell me what is wrong without referring me anywhere else?

Hi Robert,

Thanks for sharing your experience using PCGen. I've responded to each
point in turn below.

confusingly offers me only a toggle choice when I want several. Deeming that
ineffective or less than best at least I go on into the app choosing
Sources->Select Sources which does seem right.
The aim of the basic page is to allow quick access to some frequently
used options. If the text at the top had said something like
"Select a predefined source to load, or use the 'Advanced' tab to select
your own set of sources."
would that have helped?
> Even though the PCGen title bar has pathfinder in it, I still have to tell it
the game system again (which confuses me) in the combo box on the advanced tab.
Are there two game system choices? Could we name that something else?<shiver>
Anyway, I choose Pathfinder RPG again.

That drop-down and the title bar are referring to the same thing and the
drop-down should default to the same value as the title bar. It just
allows you to change the game system (or game mode as it is referred to
internally).

left. Fail. Message:

least. So what do I have to go on? The word campaign suggests something the
app understands so I look for it. No top level menu back in the app has any
reference to the word campaign. Dead end.

Yes that message could be more helpful. The terminology should be
consistent (as an aside we have struggled with names for these and they
have been called sources, campaigns, and datasets in the past). How
about this for a replacement (taking Ultimate Combat as an example)?

"This source cannot be selected yet as it relies on other sources:

/at least 1 of ( at least 1 of BOOKTYPE=Core Rules must be already
selected, at least 1 of BOOKTYPE=Complete Core must be already selected )
/
You can also see these requirements for the currently clicked source in
the 'Source Info' section below."

Note: The "at least..." text is automatically generated, I'll discuss it
a bit more below.

> I assume that this bad error message means that a source which is a
prerequisite for this source has not been included yet so this one cant be.
Where is a dialog choice that offers this" Include them? Yes button, no button?
So simple!

Actually it isn't quite that simple :) Again taking Ultimate Combat you
have a couple of options:

   *      Paizo - Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook;
   * Pathfinder RPG for Players - Advanced; or
   * Other core rules packages to be introduced in the future.

So we have to defer to the user at this stage and let them choose the
right option.

Now looking at the message above there are a couple of problems - how
does the user know what "Core Rules" or "Complete Core" are? They could
search for those in the box at the top but in both cases they don't get
a result - the search for core gets the right result at least :)

So some actions from there:

  1. Add book type to the text searched;
  2. See if the requirements can be recoded to always have a specific
suggested book name (this one is for the data team); and
  3. Try and simplify the automatically generated requirements display
text a bit by reducing common cases e.g. "at least 1 of single
choice must already be selected" becomes "single choice must already
     be selected".

> In frustration, I try including random sources guessing which it might be that
is needed. None seem to work or to de-red the one I want. Dead end again.
Yeah that's not what we want people to do!

After using a product for a long time (10 years+ here) you do start to
make assumptions, so it is incredibly helpful to have someone come along
without those assumptions and provide their insight. We've come a long
way from the early days where you needed to know a lot about the data to
use the program, but obviously there is still room for improvement!

> You can better than that. Even for freeware.
>
> Can anyone please tell me what is wrong without referring me anywhere else?

While I have detailed some things I'll be doing above, the immediate fix
for you would be to

  1. Use the 'Advanced' tab on 'Select Sources' as you have;
  2. Add the "Paizo - Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook" and
presumably "Paizo - Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Advanced Player's
     Guide" first and second;
  3. Click on the source you want to add and if it is in red, then look
in the info panel below for the requirements section and choose the
sources you need to satisfy those.
  4. You may also want to click "Save Source Selection" once you are done
and give the set of source a name "Roberts Pathfinder Game" which
will appear on the basic screen in future. This is really only
needed if you have more than one game, so you can quickly switch
between them. PCGen remembers the sources you used for each
character and will load them up when you load the character.

Thanks for the feedback and hopefully the above is helpful in getting
you going.

Cheers,
James Dempsey

Greetings:

* This was last updated 19th of August 2009

Posting guidelines:
-------------------

http://wiki.pcgen.org/index.php?title=Posting_Guidelines

Here is a re-emphasis of those guidelines:
------------------------------------------

We are the Moderator Monkeys. There. We said it. We hope you all enjoyed it,
as it's the first, last, and only time we will refer to ourselves as such,
actually we tell a lie, but that's OK, because we're the Moderators :-)

You've all read the posting guidelines, right? Ha! Fat chance! We've only read
them once myself in several years of service to PCGen. That's a rather long and
lengthy read, not to mention boring. We'll point out the part that concerns us,
and therefore you, the most. We'll even sum it up in two words (points to
anybody that knows where the words come from...don't respond, you know who you
are):

-------
Be Nice
-------

That's it. That's the rule. Be Nice. If you have a disagreement with someone, Be
Nice. If someone's point of view irritates you, Be Nice. If anyone irritates
you, Be Nice. If someone insults your mother, Be Nice.

How, you ask, will you know when it's time to not Be Nice? We're glad you asked
us that. It's a simple answer. It's NEVER time for you to not Be Nice. If you
decide to not Be Nice, we start charging up the Ninja Monkeys. If you're not
nice, we'll close the thread and ask you to Be Nice. If you ignore our request
to Be Nice, we'll close down the thread, again, and TELL you to Be Nice. If you
ignore that we'll get irritated. We really hate having to close a thread more
than once. If you make us close it a third time, we'll whip out the Stick of
Doom(TM), smack you upside the head with it, and then gag you. Oh yeah and the
Ninja Monkeys will then take bits of your soul and scatter it across the
wastelands.

What's a gag, you ask? That's a simple one to answer too. A gag is where we
remove your posting privileges. If we have to gag you, the typical time is as
follows.

First offence: You get off easy, you lucky sod. You only get gagged for one
day.

Second offence: You don't get off quite as lucky. You get gagged for three
days.

Third offence: By this time, we're becoming VERY irritated with you. You get
gagged for however long we feel like gagging you at the time.
Any offence beyond the third: Now you've flat out Torqued us off! You get one
of two things. Gagged for a VERY long time, or gagged subject to banning by the
BoD (that means you're gagged until the BoD removes you from the project, or the
BoD in a majority decision, makes a very special, very persuasive,
request that you be un-gagged).

Now for the bad news <evil grin>. The above times are NOT set in stone, as some
of you are habitual offenders. You all know who you are, so we don't have to
name any names. Most of you get to skip the request, skip the order, and go
straight to the first offence. Some of you get to skip that and go to the
second offence. A small number of you get to go straight to the third offence.
A VERY select few of you are already at the very long time, or even the gagged
subject to banning by the BoD. That select few: you know who you are. This is
your ONLY warning.

That is the only sidetrack we're making for the habitual offenders. Now
everybody else (the very large majority of our community) pay attention!
Request, Order, Gag is what happens in the typical situation. Not every
situation is typical (imagine that). There will be times where the request phase
will be skipped, and even times when the order phase will be skipped and you'll
go straight to gagged, even though you've never been offensive. We don't expect
those times to happen often, but we imagine they will happen, so we're giving
everyone fair warning. It all depends on how much you offend us <evil grin>.
we'll give you all an example, from recent times, even. If anyone, in any way,
shape or form that we can possibly imagine, bashes/flames any publisher on these
boards, you proceed directly to a minimum of first offence, more depending on
how offensive you were.

Now, we're going to put something to rest right away. Code Monkey Publishing IS
A PUBLISHER, and we're tired of hearing them bashed on and flamed until
well-done. If you don't agree with us, TOUGH! You can disagree with us all you
want off the boards, this is not subject to discussion on the board. Only
warning.

OK, we think we all understand each other now, don't you? Time for us to wrap
this up. What, there's a question in the back? OK, go ahead

Question: You're not just going to leave it like that, are you? You're going
to say something nice to wrap everything up, just like the rest of the BoD,
right?

Answer: Well OK then, we really, really love the fact that we have such a large
a passionate community, we're sorry for the rules, but with 5000+ and counting
of you something had to be done, think of it as the Iron Monkey Paws in the
Velvet Gloves :-)

--------------------------------------------------------------
New Policy on Asking Questions about PI/Closed Content Sources
--------------------------------------------------------------

We respect the Publishers wishes with regards to PI and Closed Content
and therefore strongly prefer that any discussion of the creation of
those data sources are held in Generic terms.

However, we realise that a vast majority of you are asking questions
on how to code data sets for your own personal use and so we're no
longer going to growl or wave fingers at people who mention a
PI/Closed Content reference when asking questions. We will however
continue to state our responses to those questions in a generic manner
and hope that you'll do the same.

We will still not tolerate any PI/Closed Content being uploaded to our
file areas or any attempts at illegally sharing data sources.

Examples:
---------

1.) A user asking how to code the Skirmish ability from the Complete
Adventurer (WotC) will receive a helpful polite answer phrased in
generic terms, e.g "To implement an Ability that gives 1d6 damage
every 3 levels you'd want to look to the Rogue sneak attack
progression in our SRD files". But no more finger waving or growling
from the Moderators!

2.) A user stating that they want someone to give them a privately
coded data source for the Complete Adventurer set will be warned etc.

3.) A user uploading the Complete Adventurer data source will be
warned etc.

So, for all community members, there's no longer any need to call in
the Moderator if a PI/Closed Content question is asked. We will step
in if necessary if someone blatantly abuses this new policy.

For reference:
--------------

Closed Content/PI is any data source that we don't have permission to
publish ourselves or isn't OGL/OGC.

Please see:

http://pcgen.sourceforge.net/autobuilds/pcgen-docs/acknowledgments/publishersand\
sources.html

For a list of publisher permissions that we currently have.

PapaDRB and Karianna - on behalf of the Moderators

James,

Many thanks for your response and the speed of it. You may allot yourself a
huge merit for being in a select set of perhaps as little as 1% of
share/freeware projects I have written to that deigned to respond. And you're
the only one in recent memory who wasn't just responding to flame me. :) Huge
sincere thanks!

So I did find this after you pointed it out. Why was it so hard for me? Here
are the myriad reasons:
1) My un-maximized PCGen window has a very very squeezed Info sub-frame. All I
saw was the top of the picture of the book in question.
2) SINCE all I saw was a picture of a book I assume it was a link to buy type
deal and my paranoid of others' reasons and jaded self isnt going further down
that path (I assure you).
3) Your error message above should include the solution, I insist. Instead of a
pop up error and seemly unrelated info field, Have the error occupy its own
dedicated screen area with solutional help in another under it hierarchically.
Also de-programerify the text of that solution. Here is an example:

There is one reset action and two requirements you must complete in order to
choose this selection and they should be performed in this order:
0) - Reset action - remove all sources from the right window of chosen sources.
1) Requirement - You must already have a source chosen whose BOOKTYPE is Core
Rules.
2) Requirement - You must already have a source chosen whose BOOKTYPE is
Complete Core

> > I assume that this bad error message means that a source which is a

I disagree. I see your point. But that point is lesser in value to getting a
new unfamiliar user up and running with your application. Make a default case
that uses Paizo (nominal)and work from there. Get it WORKING. A clever user
can change it after that. An unclever user will still have more fun with your
tool to start with.

As stated de-programerify your text instructions. Logic > Technese. Orderly

All of that was what eventually got me to what I suspect (I don't know yet) is a
working set of sources. Here are some other observations:

1) As listed the instructions failed! But I did read the info sections to
follow the 'logic' included there. That revealed a problem. Disinclusion logic
is ... notorious. Although I didn't know what I had included that was stopping
my source selection, I know had a clue that was the problem. I did my reset
step from above and it worked. BOOM. So, what was the issue? Something
called:

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Character Traits Web Enhancement

was loaded on the right BY DEFAULT. That little jewel along with the core rules
forbid the choice of the APG. An arguably niche default that caused
disinclusion of some fairly basic stuff - not good.
2) I had thought I wanted traits so I was a bit miffed at removing them. I was
surprised to find traits still available on the sheet in the app. I surmise
that the web stuff is somehow different than this base trait set.
3) The stated logic of our second requirement from my list above, even as I
understand it given what you have explained, is bogus. Why do I say this?
Because there is only 1 item on my default download list of sources with
BOOKTYPE=Complete Core. That is something called:

Pathfinder RPG for Players Advanced

In any combination of including the core rules and the APG(supplement) this item
never is enabled. Following its own stated info block logic leads me nowhere as
the 'logic' is, as far as I can tell, a nonsequitur. It is:

less than 2 of ( at least 1 of BOOKTYPE=Core Rules must be already selected,
less than 1 of Pathfinder RPG for Players - Advanced must be already selected )
and less than 1 of Paizo - Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Advanced Player's Guide
must be already selected

As far as I can tell that is aneurysm talk!

Hope all this helps somehow ... feedback being what it is.

Thanks for your help and as I use the tool I will possible send you other
'helpful' suggestions.

This way, it easily comes into GMGen so I can track HP, and the table allows you

Are those summoned monsters different from the standard critters for
pathfinder? For (R)SRD they aren't, and I just used the default monster
kits to create the summoned monsters. OK, I had to add the fiendish or
celestial templates where appropriate, and a self-made template for
augment summoning feat. But that's quite fast doing. I doubt any other
pre-generation would be much faster to use, once you know what needs to
be done.

Actually I just thought of a quick way. (besides putting everything in notes on
the bio section).

Put Summoned (or something) as a TYPE for each monster and then you can quick
filter for the Summoned type.

Greetings,

Ok, just got caught out, printed my wife's barbarian with a 2 handed greataxe on
a 'simple' OS, and didnt notice it showed 'null' for hit & damage until halfway
through the game, after much beration and (post-game) trying to figure out what
I'd done wrong... I used the standard OS sheet, and even worse, discovered that
she'd now got a third attack per round too...

I know the Standard sheet is there for the two handed variations, and I
intentionally use that when I've got characters that do things with multiple
weapons, but it never occurred to me to use it for a weapon that is *always*
going to be used two handed.

Is there (could there be?) any way for the Simple OS sheets to handle two handed
weapons ?

Cheers
Dave

Could we add that URL into the spell detail (display desc only?) so it's showed
up in the GUI when viewing the spell? Saves everyone on this list bookmarking it
separately...

I was wondering where the "standard campaign" 80 point character build option
came from in RSRD 3.5 mode. Is it from Pathfinder or somewhere else as OGC? I've
looked various places—like the docs, here, and the wiki—but haven't been able to
find mention of it.

If it came from some place as OGC, would that source also have as OGC starting
wealth for beginning characters and for higher level characters that might be
added in as kits or something? If it is PCGen-specific, perhaps it and some
other useful features like starting wealth could be created and combined in the
PCGen OGC pack.

I believe starting wealth is there for Pathfinder. Under kits

Hi Dave,

Attach the character pdf and pcg to a tracker and I'll investigate. The simple
os should be working
just fine.
