Typhon?

cool.

I guess I wouldn't expect much FLQ to be bought by you, considering how much you
already own! :)

Cheers

I think the idea of a special raffle is a great idea, I've already placed my
oder. But not what you would have expected. For some time I've been thinking
about Typhon and took this opportunity to eventually order the rule book.

In the long term a display board, and painted miniatures are planned, but with
so many ideas and projects, you never know when, even if this will ever happen.

interesting review, makes me think that when I finally scrape up enough cash to get into the ion age I'll have a reason at last to get the worldwerks mean streets set.

Hello Ian, welcome to the group.

I think you will find that the majority of the posters here are flintloque players, but Ion Age is looking very interesting. The miniatures are a little pricier, but they are darn nice.

I would suggest AA send a copy of the rules to the reviewers at 'The Ancible', it is a new Fantasy and SF magazine (like Harbinger) that is lookign very good. The editor (I believe) is Ian Barstow, who once worked under Mongoose Publishing, a good friend of mine from back int he day.

> Having gone through the book cover to cover, but not yet having played a game, I thought I'd post about my initial reactions to the book.

I still have this with FLQ 3, I have yet to try it. Oh and Frontear (I keep forgetting it exists)!

> It's great to see a new Ion Age release after so many years. I love the 'twist' with the Free Companies dissolving into the Prydian Precinct and becoming engaged in an interplanetary Civil War. Ever since the new rules were first announced and previewed I have been more inspired to paint. It's been great to have a reason to break away from old colour schemes and try something new, as I am obviously going to need a few platoons of Retained and Muster troops for each faction.

No idea what you're on about unfortunately!

> While I personally would have preferred the cover and interior illustrations of the rules to be in colour, and perhaps for there to be a few more images, I understand the costs involved and appreciate the price point of the rules being kept at a reasonable value. Likewise, the new tiles are single sided, again that is perfectly understandable.

Edward Jackson appears to be a very busy man, I don't think he is paid to do the illustrations he does and the vast amount of work he creates is amazing really. Of course, we'd all like to see full colour, but that's the nature of it really.

> I'd love to see the website and/or this group being used to showcase larger colour images of painted models, and perhaps even 'painting guides' or other tutorial type articles. I think it's important that players be given at least some information about the uniforms, heraldry and other details of the two factions; after all, without knowing much about the goals and exploits of either side in the war, what would inspire a player choose either one over the other?

That can be easily done. If I get into the miniatures, I will write up some painting guides for this webpage.

> I appreciated the illustrations of the different weapon types, although it was a shame the designer who put the document together laid the artwork files over a grey background without making sure all 'white space' had been set to transparent. Although I have been following the Ion Age background since the very start, I never knew until now what the Tumbler (formerly Schmitwess) MPI looked like! I know there's a Scout figure using that weapon, but sadly that's one of the few Ion Age figures I haven't been able to obtain yet. Hopefully AA plans to rerelease more of the line as time goes by (I am certainly looking forwards to the Hopsitallers / Desteria Knights).

Sounds like a very useful part of the book. Always good to help the imagination with pictures. A picture tells one thousand words after all.

> Overall I enjoyed the addition to the Ion Age background, and found the short narratives accompanying the missions especially inspiring. I hope we see more of Emeritas Hughes in future sets!

Sounds good.

> The new equipment (aerial mines, sentry guns and force pavaises) add some very interesting tactical options and it's great to see communications specialists and medics playing an important role.

I love the idea of specialists like that playing a big role. I'd like to see some similar traits in Flintloque (Medics etc as discussed a while back).

> Without having played a game, I'd have to say the introduction of a points system is also a big drawcard. At the same time, I really like that the missions presented include many 'lopsided' battles and scenarios suitable for solo gaming. This really shows the potential of the rules in a way that many evenly matched scenarios would not.

This has been done with Flintloque as well. Points are a nice option, but I'd hate for the game to be dominated by them.

> The boards seem perfectly useable. I'm not a huge fan of the white space around the obstacles (cars, barricades, etc) and will probably cut them out to do away with this problem. I think it will still be clear how many spaces they 'fill' if I do cut them out. For this reason I kind of wish the numbers (indicating how tough each obstacle is) were not printed on the obstacles themselves but were confined to the white space around them. I will rewrite these numbers on the backs of the counters - I'd rather not have them covering over the artwork.

I'm not sure if the company has a 'layout' specialist or graphic design team. I get the picture that the boards were made for playability rather than purely aesthetic reasons. Perhaps they could release a few 'board tile' sets, to keep the games fresh. I have no idea how the system works though!

> Having played the original Firefight I was able to read through the rules and understand them pretty quickly. I worry about new players as there are aspects to the layout which are not particularly clear (it's telling that the original Firefight used a greater pagecount and more orderly progression of rules, from basic to advanced, to get across what were largely the same ideas).

This has becoem a problem with Slaughterloo and to some extent, frontear and possibly the new flintloque. Their playtesters are often the most dedicated followers of AA. This is good, but can be adisadvantage as they are not reviewing it from the POV of someone who does not know the rules. I had this problem with Slaughterloo especially and had to be taught to play rather than learn it. Frontear's background was too long for me and I ended up giving up reading it. I felt it could have been summarised quite a lot more. Most of it went into my head and straight out again unfortunately.

> I do have some rules questions - I'll save those for another email - and there are a number of issues with spelling and grammar, as well as the way the rules are laid out. In some cases there are whole paragraphs of repeated text, or text presumably "left over" from earlier versions of the rules which no longer seems to make sense. I'll probably put up another post to address these proof-reading and editing issues so that any future editions of the rules can be cleaned up a bit.

Spelling and grammar are issues in a few of AA's publications. Again, this is down to not having a proper editorial. This has happened to other companies I am friends with on a regular basis (Mongoose Publishing and Spartan Games). SG got around it by rereleasing the book after a few months, but edited.

> All in all? I'm glad this set came out, and look forwards to AA continuing to support the Ion Age background with new sets that (if I could have one more wish...) could perhaps be just a little more consistently edited and comprehensively illustrated.

I agree with this judgement, it's always great to see new stuff coming out, regardless of spelling or grammar.

> Not sure if I just wrote a review or a rant - either way, thanks for reading!

Bit of both, but critique isn't always a bad thing. It's just something to work on. No one is perfect, and I certainly don't expect AA (which is a very small company) to be perfect. I think they go well out of their way to keep releases up where other bigger companies are failing to do so (Spartan Games for example).

Cheers for your review mate, I found it useful.

Firstly I should say 'hi' to the group as I've been lurking here for a few
months without posting.

Due to the difficulty of getting to my local Post Office during business hours,
I only just picked up the package containing my copy of Firefight 2.0 on Friday.

Having gone through the book cover to cover, but not yet having played a game, I
thought I'd post about my initial reactions to the book.

It's great to see a new Ion Age release after so many years. I love the 'twist'
with the Free Companies dissolving into the Prydian Precinct and becoming
engaged in an interplanetary Civil War. Ever since the new rules were first
announced and previewed I have been more inspired to paint. It's been great to
have a reason to break away from old colour schemes and try something new, as I
am obviously going to need a few platoons of Retained and Muster troops for each
faction.

While I personally would have preferred the cover and interior illustrations of
the rules to be in colour, and perhaps for there to be a few more images, I
understand the costs involved and appreciate the price point of the rules being
kept at a reasonable value. Likewise, the new tiles are single sided, again that
is perfectly understandable.

I'd love to see the website and/or this group being used to showcase larger
colour images of painted models, and perhaps even 'painting guides' or other
tutorial type articles. I think it's important that players be given at least
some information about the uniforms, heraldry and other details of the two
factions; after all, without knowing much about the goals and exploits of either
side in the war, what would inspire a player choose either one over the other?

I appreciated the illustrations of the different weapon types, although it was a
shame the designer who put the document together laid the artwork files over a
grey background without making sure all 'white space' had been set to
transparent. Although I have been following the Ion Age background since the
very start, I never knew until now what the Tumbler (formerly Schmitwess) MPI

Overall I enjoyed the addition to the Ion Age background, and found the short
narratives accompanying the missions especially inspiring. I hope we see more of
Emeritas Hughes in future sets!

The new equipment (aerial mines, sentry guns and force pavaises) add some very
interesting tactical options and it's great to see communications specialists
and medics playing an important role.

Without having played a game, I'd have to say the introduction of a points
system is also a big drawcard. At the same time, I really like that the missions
presented include many 'lopsided' battles and scenarios suitable for solo
gaming. This really shows the potential of the rules in a way that many evenly
matched scenarios would not.

The boards seem perfectly useable. I'm not a huge fan of the white space around
the obstacles (cars, barricades, etc) and will probably cut them out to do away
with this problem. I think it will still be clear how many spaces they 'fill' if
I do cut them out. For this reason I kind of wish the numbers (indicating how
tough each obstacle is) were not printed on the obstacles themselves but were
confined to the white space around them. I will rewrite these numbers on the

understand them pretty quickly. I worry about new players as there are aspects
to the layout which are not particularly clear (it's telling that the original
Firefight used a greater pagecount and more orderly progression of rules, from
basic to advanced, to get across what were largely the same ideas).

I do have some rules questions - I'll save those for another email - and there
are a number of issues with spelling and grammar, as well as the way the rules
are laid out. In some cases there are whole paragraphs of repeated text, or text
presumably "left over" from earlier versions of the rules which no longer seems
to make sense. I'll probably put up another post to address these proof-reading
and editing issues so that any future editions of the rules can be cleaned up a
bit.

All in all? I'm glad this set came out, and look forwards to AA continuing to
support the Ion Age background with new sets that (if I could have one more
wish...) could perhaps be just a little more consistently edited and
comprehensively illustrated.

Not sure if I just wrote a review or a rant - either way, thanks for reading!

Woohoo! I will be getting 2 of this set ;). The sculptor has done a wonderful
job. I'm very happy that the subject is a toad as well. I can use him as one of
my generals for Slaughterloo! :).

Hello All,

Thanks for this. I think its the best Festive Season offer we have ever
done to date.

The chance to get a Magnum Orcus book from 2008 ot 2009 is a real joy,
only twenty of each exist and almost all are given out to AA Staff or as
gifts. This is the first time they have been open to the public, indeed
when I think on it its the first time we have publically admitted their
existance!

Mr Alderman of course, young Rob, is in primary the one who inspired
VLE07 The Artist Goyah set from his comments and ideas this summer.

There is a Flintloque Scenario written for the LEU01 Bella Manicotti,
its being final tested by me and my good lady this weekend. The insert
in the pack DOES contain stats and rules for the use of the set as a 16
man unit of line in Slaughterloo...see we think of everything ;-)

Gavin.

Hello Chris,

That it does! Mr Alderman has already reserved a set of LEU01 for
himself. I will be sending it personally to him next week.

Of course your Bishop needs an escort! This LEU set will be rarer than
hens teeth soon enough.

Cheers,

Gavin.

It says something about your reputation on this group that when I saw the piece
on the Bella Manicoti my first thought was "I bet Rob will be first in line for
those" :)

I will admit that on looking at the figures my next thought was that perhaps my
Bishop of Nepolise could do with an escort...

This is an absoloutely lovely gesture and it makes loving the game systems
totally worthwhile.
I will try and convince my girlfriend that buying me more flintloque stuff is
really worth it this Christmas. ;)

Really want one of those artwork books! I have fallen in love with many of
Edward's wonderful fight scenes! My favourite gaming tshirt is the one from MCS
miniatures with his scene of Beervarian artillery trying to fight off hordes of
undead!

The newly released miniatures are awesome, gotta love that Goyah! Can't wait to
paint the canvas.
I also look forward to a new flintloque scenario involving the Bella Mancotti!
Will we see SLOO rules for them?

Cheers!
Rob

The Magnificent Festive Raffle from Alternative Armies

Runs from Thursday 19th November 2009 until Friday 7th January 2010 - Raffle Draw Day!

This year in addition to some superb new releases for the festive season Alternative Armies brings to you the Magnificent Festive Raffle 2009! The Magnificent Raffle gives every single gamer the chance to win a prize from us that in some cases simply cannot be bought for any price you care to mention!

Go to this link for full details or read on: http://www.alternative-armies.com/Super_Bargains.htm

---

To enter the Raffle you must place an order with Alternative Armies online or by email, phone or post between now and the 7th of January 2010.  A great reason to get the new items on the AA New Releases page.

Every order placed gains one numbered ticket for the raffle automatically. Additional tickets are placed in orders of more than £10.00 in product value in multiples of £5.00 rounding down. This means for instance an order placed for £19.50 (before shipping is added) gains one ticket for the order, then another for being more than £10.00 in product value and another for being more than £15.00 in product value but it does not gain another as it is less than twenty pounds and each multiple of five is rounded down. This example order would be supplied with THREE numbered tickets. A £30.00 Product Value order would gain 6 Tickets. This Raffle applies to all Unpainted Miniatures, all Painted Miniatures and also all Publications plus all other items we stock. There is no upper limit on the number of tickets per order.

Raffle Tickets are supplied on printed paper and each is uniquely numbered.

A master list of the numbers, each linked to the order than it was assigned to and that customers name and address. Please keep your tickets in a safe place!

At the end of the Magnificent Raffle period, the 7th of January 2010, at 12 noon GMT the winning list of numbers along with the prize allocated to each will be posted on the Alternative Armies website on the New Releases page and Super Bargains page. An announcement will also be made on the Notables Yahoo Group. Winners will automatically have their prizes sent to them by first class mail or airmail if not in the UK that day.

To all

Please can I have feedback. There will be a V4.

I re-writing some of the skills to make than read better;

Endurance (Level 1) - Ignores the effects of the first Hit and can act and when
it is converted into a Wound, do not place a shaken token.

Also, had an idea on a flaw admendment;

Alcoholic - Figure has a 25% chance per game of being drunk. A drunken figure
adds -10% to Accuracy, -1 to Melee, reduce Movement by 5cm and have a +1 bonus
to Morale Checks.
