Hey, is this thing still on? :)

>how well does this game play ?

Depends on your tastes, I guess. Using the standard layout, the game essentially
begins in a kind of deadlock in the center of the board, with both players
working to wrest advantage around the borders before the center eventually
"explodes." Sort of :) I like it, but then I would.

Grab an opponent here and give it a go: http://superdupergames.org/

>has anyone liked it enough to do a custom board design ?

I've built several custom boards over the years, but again, I would :)

Well, the SDG (http://superdupergames.org/) thing has been going well. At first
there were a few tweaks to be made (you had to keep track of your dead pile on
your own, for example, and there was one error in the game rules due to a simple
misunderstanding) but everything's ironed out now. I've been playing it
regularly and have a half-dozen or so completed games and more on the way.

One of the things I like a lot is that the site keeps stats ... so once there's
a large enough sample of completed games, you can look at a game's stats and
know how many moves and average game takes, whether there's a significant first-
or second-player advantage, and so on (at the moment, one critic of the game
predicts a "huge" first-player advantage for Mastery, while the initial stats
are showing a notable second-player advantage, but the sample is too small to
tell anything yet ... from my own experience I've never noticed it mattering
much either way).

And of course, the best thing has been playing against folks with wildly
different play styles from what I'm used to.

I've issued (as "ghalev") a Standing Challenge using a new feature of the site,
so by all means, please come around and let's play :)

Yes, excellent point.

That's something to do with computers, isn't it?

:)

I've just started there today (as "ghalev") -- seems very groovy so far. Lots of
games (including a passel of Icehouse ones, I note).

This is excellent news, given that the online playable Mastery we've
been able to download doesn't work with most modern ISP setups
(apparently due to IP virtualization at the ISP, same problem that kills
some of the oldest VoIP applications). That is, the client works fine
on any connection, but the server app has to run on a machine that isn't
behind an address expansion system.

I'll have to check into Superdupergames. :)

It's not often we see new Mastery news, but here's some now:

http://superdupergames.org/

Superdupergames is busy implementing a BIG collection of games for web
gaming at your own pace, and Mastery is now part of that growing
library. Pretty spiffy.

This comes at a groovy time, since Mastery is due to poke its nose
back into the world this winter in Uresia 2nd Edition (more on which
soon).

I just got a chance to test the connection to my server from outside my
LAN -- no go. Apparently the server software and Internet Connection
Sharing don't agree on what IP address the server software should use --
I can't get any kind of connection to the external address from outside
my LAN. I can connect from inside on either the internal or external
addresses, so I don't know what the exact problem is -- other than that
it won't work with ICS running on the server. It also doesn't work
through the address translation -- can't connect at the external address
if I tell the server software to us the internal address (and connection
to the internal address isn't conclusive, since I'm using a dial-out
connection from a machine still on the LAN to test).

If I come up with something more functional, I'll post back...

Well, since I have three computers in this room, I found a simpler
solution that trying to agree on a time via a moderated list -- I'll
just leave my laptop connected to the server above, and I'll hear it if
anyone else connects when I'm in the room.

Can't be much worse than I am...

I'd be interested if we can find a mutually agreeable time. I check my
mail fairly frequently, but lately I've been in There a great deal.
FWIW, I'm now on Eastern time, and usually start to pack it in for the
evening by around 10:00 PM.

we can actually get enough people together to put some traffic on the

   Hiya, Folks,

I just put Mastery 2.6 up on the Mastery computer game web site
   <http://www.misersoft.com/games/mastery/index.shtml>, along with a little
extra amusement to go along with it.

The main new feature is one that I've been meaning to get around to for
ages--Mastery now has the ability to use custom pictures for the different
types of pieces. Not a big thing, but fun, and it required some other
   related changes.

Check out the revisions page on the site for details, or check here
   <http://www.misersoft.com/games/mastery/revs.html> to see them now.

   Thanks,

   Armin

Love the game (even though I have yet to win a game).

If anyone is interested in a game on either a Tuesday or Friday night, (after
9pm EST) - shoot me a mail that day at delcar@... and we'll set
up a time.

PS - I agree with S. John, lets get a tournament going soon.
