I've thought about building lathe-turned aluminum (or stainless) and
brass (or bronze) pieces, with magnets inset in their bottoms to mate
with magnets in board squares that also mechanically mate with the
pieces (piece would have a cylindrical well in the bottom that fits over
a boss in the center of the square) -- board squares also machined,
naturally, from aluminum/stainless and brass/bronze. There also would
be a cover that closes over the board, making it something you could
even pack into a suitcase with a game in progress.

Never have gotten around to building the stuff, maybe I should get
started...
