The following is extracted from British Othello Federation mailing. A
posting by Emmanuel. Hope you enjoy. EDMUND.

Dear Othello player,

Next week, the 32nd World Othello Championship will take place in
Oslo, Norway (see http://www.worldothellofederation.com/woc2008/).

We shall try to provide live coverage of the tournament, results and
standings at http://www.woc2008.org and transmit live games at
http://www.liveothello.com

As there will be no table judges, we need your help to type in the
transcripts. The plan is to scan the transcript sheets and to publish
the pictures on flickr (http://www. flickr.com/photos/woc_2008/).
Anyone willing to help can then replay the transcript in his favorite
othello program and paste the list of moves as commentary to the
photo.

I hope you will all enjoy this great tournament!

for the TD-team
Emmanuel
ps: please relay this message on all your favorite mailing-lists.

The tournament to decide the U.S. Champion will be held once again in
New York City on Saturday and Sunday, August 23 and 24.

The tournament site will remain the same, the Tudor Hotel at the
United
  Nations:

Tudor Hotel at the United Nations
304 East 42nd Street
New York, New York 10017
USA
Tel +1 212 986 8800

Previous World Champions (within the last 25 years) and USOA rated
grandmasters are offered a guarantee of $600 minimum prize (up from
$500
last year). In order to support a World Othello rating list, for
the
first time I will be offering this minimum prize to any player with
an
established (bold-faced) rating in excess of 2400 (the established
rating
must be achieved at any time in 2008) on the World Othello rating
list
maintained by Emmanuel Lazard at the following website:

http://www.ffothello.org/classement/classement.php

Previous World Championship semi-final qualifiers (within the last 25
years) and USOA rated masters are offered a guarantee of $300
minimum
prize. This minimum prize guarantee will also be offered to any
player
who has an established (bold-faced) rating in excess of 2300 on the
above mentioned World Othello rating list.

The top prize will be $600. Second prize is $300 and third prize is
  $150.

As we did last year, a $500 prize will be offered to the person with
the "best endgame" and can be won by a person winning another
prize. If
there is a tie for this prize, the prize will be split among the
  winners.

The best endgame prize will be awarded for the games played on the
first day, and based on the following criteria:

(1) Only the winner of a game will be considered.

(2) The winning disk differential must be 20 disks or less.

(3) Errors in the last twenty moves (ten moves for either side) of
the
game will be calculated as the number of disks the error costs with
perfect play. This calculation will be performed on WZebra. Errors
will be counted only if the move is not perfect for the winning
player.

The winner(s) is(are) the person(s) with the least number of disks
given up in the last twenty moves due to errors. This prize was
offered
last year, and there was no perfect game meeting the above criteria.

As always, International players are more than welcome. We love
  International players!

Saturday will be seven rounds, at 9:00AM, 10:15AM, 11:30AM, 1:30PM,
2:45PM, 4:00PM, and 5:30PM. Pairings will use accelerated Swiss
System
  pairings.

As always, dinner will be offered in a fancy New York City
restaurant,
to all players free of charge, compliments of the tournament
director.
This year, I'd also invite the players to invite one spouse /
significant other / friend / relative (if parents, both are
invited) to join
us for dinner, with my compliments. Because dinner reservations
need to
be made in advance, please let me know by email of your intention to
play in the tournament and of whether you will be accompanied at
dinner.

Sunday will be a round-robin playoff of the top four players...six
rounds starting at 9:30AM. If two or more people tie for
fourth/fifth on
the first day, a playoff will be held between the two players with
the
top tiebreaks.

Time control is 30 moves per game per side. Tiebreaks on the first
day
will be Brightwell Coefficients. Tiebreaks on the second day will be
disk differential. As an experiment this year (because I'm a
personal
advocate of this rule), we're going to implement a rule that a
person can
not lose on time in a position for which neither player had any
legal
move options remaining in the game.

Entry fee is $100, and may be paid at the door, or in advance.

I hope to see you there!

Just now at noon, I have a conversation with WOF president, Benkt. He
hinted that World Othello Championship 2008 will be at Europe and
asked us to prepare earlier for it. He also reminded us to held our
national championship before September to avoid last minute fixture.

I'll later open a poll for Malaysia Open 2008. To vote for best month
for Malaysia Open 2008. Certainly it won't be September; April also
not a selection as it is too near. We shall have May, June, July and
August 2008. 4 months for your selection.

Any proposal date is welcome from all members. If you feel that
particular date suit you best, like public holiday, school holiday;
please propose.

Thank you.

"A mail from WOF President, Benkt Steentoft"

Dear Daniel,
Dear all Othello enthusiasts,

It's fantastic that we have all those enthusiastic players and
organizers all over the world who is burning for our game, Othello.
These real enthusiast are needed so that our favourite game will be
more well known and make our Othello community grow. We can see that
this will happen now in South America. Brazil, Argentina and Chile
is three countries who are relatively new in the World Othello
Federation. We hope that this enthusiasm will spread to other
countries in this part of the world. Well done!

Its also great that the Othello world is growing. This year we can
welcome Finland, Brazil and Israel as nations with Othello
federations. Also Cyprus, Greece, Belarus, Chile, Bulgaria and
Portugal have started groups and have a contact person for their
nation. Hopefully they will one day create an Othello federation and
be even more active. Tournaments and homepages are coming in many
new countries!

When we are growing we can also see that more and more players want
to attend the WOC. Thats also great. But it means that if all 31
nations who now are members in WOF could send 4 players, it would be
124 players. That would be an amazing tournament, and one day I hope
we can have a WOC with so many players. But not this year in
Athens.

This year the sponsors gave us a maximum number of players that is
lower then last year. In fact, if all European nations should send 4
players we would not have room for any more players! So thats the
problem we have. So thats why we, in discussions with Anjar, decide
this system. Hopefully it will be only this year.
We could go another way: we could decide that this year each nation
only could send 2+1. But I think thats a very bad idea when most
Federations already have decide their qualifications and started
their tournaments for this year. We tried to be careful. Nations in
group 3 is nations that normaly send one or no players.

Another importent thing to remember is that Anjar pay for the WOC.
In many years they have not asked us for anything. They also pay for
the WOC participations for nations who do not have a licensee. Every
licensee pay a little to the WOC.
But times changes. And the only thing Anjar asked for is that we,
WOF and all nations, can give something little back. And what they
wish is activity. Help to make Othello more famous and well known. I
dont think its too much to ask from Anjar. In fact: The more
activity from our side, the more well known Othello will be, the
more people want to buy Othello, and Anjar get more money from sold
games to spend on WOC, more money to WOC = more players in WOC. So
what it is about is that we together, WOF and all federations and
nations and Anjar, must work for Othello so we can survive and grow!
It is easy to forget this.

I will again remember you all that we are growing. And right now we
are growing fast and that means that we must, together with the
sponsor Anjar, who are the head of the WOC, discuss how it is best
to organize WOC in the future. Is it possible to have 4 players from
each nation or is it time to try out another system? I know that it
is a lot of thoughts about this so please tell us. Send us an email
with your thoughts to woc2007@worldothell ofederation. com. We will
suggest several different ways on how to arrange WOC to Anjar, and
we need your ideas and thoughts!

Hopefully you got an answer to your email Daniel and we also hope
that you will still be an Othello enthusiast and be a part of the
discussions about a fair system to arrange the WOC. And we hope to
see Argentina as an Othello federation and also see a lot of players
in future WOC.

Best regards

Hi, greetings from Anthony here.
I confirm that I can't make it for the WOC this year due to important period
in my China business here.
I give up my WOC qualification to anyone who interested to represent
Malaysia to fight with the best Othello players in the world.
Yep, I agree that the cost for this tournament is a bit high, but I strongly
suggest those who keen to improve thier Othello skills go for this
tournament.
My experience told me our skills would get improved very much after the WOC.
Cheers...

This earlier morning I looked through this mailing list. From the first
page we posted in 25th January, 2005. The following attracted me,

"My name is Joseph Chen, born in 1979, male, chinese & I'm from
Malaysia. I'm very interested to join Malaysia Othello Association &
I hope everyone in this group are as dedicated as me in order for us
to be able to join World Othello Championship one day."

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/malaysiaothelloassociation/message/2

"Please help to promote this site - Thinking of starting a small
othello competition. At least within Malaysian Players. Anyone any
suggestions? All are welcome. Before our association could be
found."

For the above two, we have done. We have players at WOC in 2006. We
hosted Malaysia Open in 2005. What's more, MOA?

Hi,

We are not rich organisation. We make no profit anyhow from this event. Think bout it, 16 persons join with RM 21.00 each, that's RM 336.00. Venue cost RM 200, Trophies cost around RM 150.00. Clearly its a negative figure, we still have to arrange transport to carry all you guys like VIP. Why not you organise the event for one time? I personally can pay RM 50.00 for entry, other can remain the same, then i expect to see many peoples around, nice trophies, colorful certificate, interesting prize money, world class othello board, professional time clock, lunch inclusive and a success event party afterthat. That will be nice.

I personally thank guys/gals with heart to come far away to join the event, but please understand our association's financial status. ^^

Regards,
Stan

I don't think I deserve 'people complaint, i help forward feedback, i kena'.
