Hi all,

Im bringing 2 extra chums with me Monday explicitly to play "Battlestar Galactica". If anyone is interested in joining us that would be great. Hopefully we will get a good turnout despite the world cup.

See you Monday,
Simn T

Hi,

Just a short note to say that it was great to see everyone again last night.
After a while of solely gaming with my kids it's been good to have adult
opponents.

I look forward to playing against some of you from the 'other' table last night.
Especially those who fancy learning the 18xx system.

I'll even look forward to playing with Ste, who despite his ginger nature, is
still one of my favourite opponents (and that is the only compliment he'll
receive).

See you all next Monday.

James

Sean has been in touch to let me know that Monday is Orange Lodge day, and John
O'Dowd has warned him that the pub will be full of drunken Protestants
celebrating the last invasion of England by a foreign power (and by Monday
possible World Champion Soccerball team). I know from experience the pub is
utterly packed in the evening of Lodge day (Sean will have 3 people serving!)
and it will be impossible to play games.

Instead of just cancelling the meeting we could meet somewhere else - it needs
to be out of the centre, away from the Southport train lines and quiet, and
obviously have decent beer. The pub that springs to mind for me is The
Belvedere, near The Philarmonic (prop; J O'Dowd). If there's enough interest
I'll post a message to confirm the meeting - PLEASE TELL ME IF YOU INTEND TO
COME.

Directions; pub is on Sugnall Street, a tiny cul-de-sac off Falkner Street. Any
buses going past The Phil are good, 15 minutes from Central Station. On street
parking free after 6, but not always easy.

So far Simon Thornton, Simon Craddock and Stuart have said they'll be along, the Simons between 6 and 7 and Stu at an unspecified time...in The Phil! 3 of us (plus Stu if he comes over to The Belv) is enough to make it worthwhile. I'll turn up about 7, and will call in The Lion on the way to see if there's any gamers there who didn't see these messages. Confirmation from anybody else who intends to come is appreciated.

The room we'll be in is larger than The Lion, although not enormous. It's usually quiet, but it is the only room with tables. The tables in the pub are small round types, so games which have huge boards or require lots of stuff to be on view (Puerto, Vikings) are probably out. Since my last visit the outdoor tables have been replaced with larger models which might be suitable providing the weather's fine and they aren't occupied - it's one of the few outdoor drinking spots not on a main road in Liverpool. Games with paper money might not be too advisable al fresco. At great personal inconvenience I'll call in The Belv this afternoon to check out the tables, and give you advance notice of the beer choice. The same pork pies as The Lion are available.

Paul.

There's now 6 confirmations (Simon, Simon, Stuart, James, Ste, Me) who will probably have a choice of Liverpool Organic 24 Karat Gold, Brimstage Trappers Hat, Shepherd Neame 4-4-2 and one I've forgot, plus a range of proper draught and bottled lager and Guinness Export (8%!).

The room has 6 round tables all the same size - less than 2 foot across. Last night the was no-one in there (all of 5 in the pub inc. me) but apparently there was some football match on, and this is a telly-free pub. The big outdoor table is large enough for anything we've got, but does have a bloody parasol in the middle. This could be removed if necessary.

Dave was in The Dispensary last night, and warning me of the scale of tonight's horror in The Lion mentioned details like bouncers on the door. Sounds fun. Anyway, I'll call in The Lion about 6.30 to rescue anyone we know there, after that Dave will look out for confused, unhappy gamers (insert "most of us during game I don't like" joke here).

Well we had one unhappy non-playing gamer at The Lion last night, chap called Sharples. He doesn't get the e-mails (getting sorted out), turned up 5 minutes after I checked in there, and Sean has never seen him so didn't tell him where we were. He sent a text, but I never heard it, so went home unhappy and confused after his first visit in about 4 months. He'll probably be along next week - his back is better but not totally fixed yet.

I currently have Stu's 'Dungeon Lords' and will personally be glad to have the
extra week available to learn it.

If you want to make things a little easier for when the game is taught. Download
the rules from BGG and have a gander at the combat section with its myriad of
examples. Combat is probably the most complex part of the game to explain
although likely pretty routine once everyone is used to the symbols.

I hope to be there tonight around 6.30pm

Hey gang.

My son Frank, is now doing football on a Monday and it is going to be very difficult for me to arrive any sooner than 8pm. This poses some obvious problems for planning for games so rather than mess anyone about I think its safe to say that I am unlikely to be attending Monday Gaming over the summer holiday period. Sorry about this.

Following our sell-out tour of Sugnall Street a few weeks ago, I wondered if there was any interest in holding the August Bank Holiday meeting (30th August) in another venue rather than just cancel it?

I'm told that The Belvedere is busy on B.H. Monday, but there are plenty of other venues we could try nearby and at other places on the fringe of the City. What I would like is a commitment from players to turn up - if there's enough I'll ask around a few likely places.

Note: commitment to turn up means turning up, not interested in turning up unless something else grabs your attention in the meantime.

Apologies to anyone who turned up after 7.15 on Monday 2nd August, but as you may have noticed the pub was packed out with punters celebrating someone's birthday, making gaming impossible. We retreated next door to The Railway, where we found an empty room with suitable tables for us to play Macao, and another game of Macao as well! This is the first time in nearly 4 years at The Lion we've had a problem playing games as a result of unforeseen events, although it's the 2nd time in a month we've has to move - Battle of the Boyne celebrations won't be on a Monday for many years at least.

I think The Lion knew there were a large number of people arriving Monday, as there were two bar staff on duty. While we can hardly expect the pub to turn away profitable business for our convenience, it was notable that the same crowd in the Railway would have had no effect on our gaming with the huge size of the (essentially deserted) pub. If this kind of thing keeps happening, or the group continues to grow we may have to move locations, and the Railway has an excellent room for our use round the back, twice the size of The News Room with tables of various sizes, which I suspect we could have reserved for our use, hopefully with more efficiency than we get at The Lion.

If anyone has strong views on moving please post a response (Rigby's and The Vernon would also be feasible venues in the area, with better beer than either Tithebarn St. pubs, although Rigby's may need credit cards to pay for rounds. My view is The Lion has been helpful to us under both ownerships and should not be abandoned at the first difficult point, although having a larger room where we don't have to fight for the tables certainly has its plus points.

I agree that it would be hasty to abandon The Lion at the first sign of a problem. At least we had prior warning of the potential problems on July 12th, whereas nobody in the group knew about this week's event until they arrived on Monday evening.

I'd like to continue in the Lion for the time being, but if anything else occurs in the near future that means we can't play and about which we had not been informed beforehand then I'm more than willing to move elsewhere.

I thought the space available and table size in the Railway were major plus points, not to mention the lasagne on the menu! Rigby's does get quite busy if I remember rightly and I don't know enough about the Vernon to make a comment.

Stuart,

there's a room in Rigby's up a few steps that only gets used when the rest of the pub is full. I've no idea what level of business they have on a Monday night, but I expect this room to be empty, and possibly reservable.

The Vernon has a room which is not as popular as the bar. I've not looked at it (yet) in respect of games suitability, but my view is that it would be third best.

I'll also have a look at what time Rigby's stop food (all the pubs I'm forced to visit on behalf of this group, it's such hard work). The Vernon stops its burgers and chips menu about 6.

I can't think of any other suitable pubs near train stations - Head of Steam is just a large room (the side bars are usually closed on quiet nights), Ship & Mitre is too busy, Dr. Duncan's is a possibility, Ma Egerton's is too small, The Carnarvon Castle and The Post Office are too small and parking is impossible, The Post House has an upstairs room that may be suitable, everywhere else is either a dump, too busy or too difficult by train or car.

Any other suggestions are welcome, of course.

Paul.
