Heh. You're way ahead of me. I've come to the conclusion lately
that I'm So Bad at roguelikes that I should just hack a version of
Crawl with proper game saves (i.e. no perma-death), because I'm just
not good enough for the regular kind.

I know there hasn't been much activity here this month but I found
this group here and decided what the hey, might as well try to spark
some interest here!
I've been playing Dungeon Crawl for bout a year now and have found
Draconian Monks to be my favored class...mutate claws and you can maul
stuff as well as punch and hit with a tail.
I've also grown fond of Elven Enchanters for some reason...Spriggan
assassins are wonderful fun too if you stay light and have many
potions of speed.
Chaos Knights who worship Xom are fickle fun depending on the gods
mood but I havn't recieved a nasty attack from Xom yet. Can't ever
decide what magic I prefer but then again I've never made it past lvl
16 of the dungeon muchless finished the game.
I patiently await a reply or a greeting of some sort. >_>;

Any character can learn magic, if you don't start with the ablity to
use spells you MUST read many scrolls to gain lvl 1 in spellcasting
first. Then you may start learning spells. It is better to start with
a class that has magical ability.
Greetings.
I've been playing a lot of Hill Dwarf Fighters, because I'm not
terribly good at roguelikes in general. Hack-n-slash is fun, but I'm
an old Larn player, and I liked the fact that I started as a
hack-n-slasher and progressed into magic.
Every time I've ever tried to learn a spell, it always tells me
"You can't use spell magic! I'm afraid it's scrolls only for now."
When I look at my fields of experience, spellcasting isn't even listed.
So will a Dwarf never ever learn to use magic? Or am I just not a
good enough player to progress to the level where I can begin thinking
about using spells?
In the meantime, I've switched to a Human Conjurer, which is a little
more my style, but I die a lot.
Thanks.

If you're buff enough, they can be beaten in melee, especially if
you're berserking or at least mighted/hasted. As for killing them with
spells -- they don't resist earth magic; Mystic Blast might also work
but I imagine it'll take quite a few castings.

If you want a virtual "place" with livelier discussion, you'll want to
investigate the Usenet group rec.games.roguelike.misc, where Crawl is
discussed and daily. If you're not accustomed to working with Usenet,
you can use Google Groups (available from the Groups tab in the main
google interface) as a window into it, although it has some technical
problems that may lead to public embarrassment eventually (too
complicated to explain here).
You will definitely want to be using the Darshan patch:
http://www.angelfire.com/trek/mazewest/
Because Crawl is more about tactics and strategy than about plot,
you'll probably gain more enjoyment than you lose by making use of the
spoiler sites out there, primarily:
http://www.crawl.webpark.plhttp://www.eleves.ens.fr/home/grasland/crawl/index.htmlhttp://www.swallowtail.org/crawl/index.shtml
I find games with non-permanent levels and games with permanent ones
to have very different flavors; in a nutshell, in *bands you ask "I
want to do this and this, what do I need?", whereas Nethack, ADOM, and
especially Crawl are more about "I have this and this; what can I do
(and which options are most likely to open up new ones)?" At the same
time, your strategic options are a little limited at first; you can
only dive (not-diving is not an option, though that doesn't mean you
shouldn't fully explore every level -- you should, even to the point
of counting staircases to make sure you've found all 6 on every level
and level-hopping to find more if there are less than that). Later you
can hop among branches and the strategic choices become more interesting.
Crawl is a very *tactical* game. Again and again you run into
situations where you are faced with a sudden threat and you need to
evaluate your resources and decide what are the "cheapest" ones that
will save the day.
Crawl is a very strategic game too -- you do need a game plan
(although at first you'll have to make do without one, because you
won't yet have an intuition for what works and what doesn't).
The classic beginners' combos are fighting races in fighting roles.
Don't worry, despite the narrowed focus, you'll be anything but bored.
Trying to give more detailed advice without a starting would just bog
things down, I think... happy Crawling!

> 1.Merfolk Why ????
One of my best characters so far (probably the best if you except the
two that actually made it to the Orb) has been a Merfolk transmuter.
Merfolk have good fighting skills and decent spellcasting, making them
very nice fighter-mages. Polearms may not be the best weapons around,
but the lightning-speed at which Merfolk advance in skill easily makes
up for that in the early game - especially since you can usually get
your hands on a halberd earlier than any other weapon of similar power,
thanks to gnolls. Not to mention the lucky times when you get a good
scythe from Sigmund (scythes of speed rock).
This plus their great transmuting skills and decent XP allow Merfolk
Transmuters to survive until they can cast Blade Hands. Learning Ice
Magic and Enchantment is also a good idea to get a ranged weapon
and some nice combat buffs.
Overall I find Merfolk to be a rather easy, if heavily specialized,
race.
> and to a leser extent ghoul
Ghouls I have a much harder time playing. Consensus seems to be that
they're fun as a challenge, but definitely a bad idea for a new player.
> Kenku
Kenku are great except for the shitty HP - plus they're best as
fighter-mages, which require some care in XP management. Their best
class is probably Reaver, though they're pretty good fire/air elementalist
or conjurer. Kenku summoners are hard to keep alive at low level, but
extremely powerful later on.

The Crypt has none, but the Tomb (a very dangerous branch accessed from
the Crypt) has one. The Slime Pits may or may not have one. Pandemonium
(probably the most dangerous place in the game, accessed from portals
in the lower levels of the dungeon just like Hell) has plenty of demonic
runes, plus four unique runes that you can get if you're strong enough
to stay a long time there. And you can find the occasional rune in the
Abyss if you're ready to face the dangers (not to mention the plain
boredom) of a long trip there.
Oh, and by the way there's no rune in the Swamp. For most characters,
the safest places to get runes are the Snake Pits, the Vaults and the
Elven Halls.

Unluckily yes, anybody who plays long enough encounters one of those
sooner or later. They're just what the name says. Most of the ones I've
met were during extended trips to the Abyss.
> 4. Best God? Item? Class?
Every player has their preference. I'd rank Sif Muna as best god, though
Vehumet and Makhleb are very good, Xom can be nice, and Nemelex is
insanely munchkin in the late game.
As for items, well, I have fond memories of a certain +8,+8 battleaxe of
slicing... ;)
> 5. Do draconians get good?

Depends vastly on the circumstances. (actually I haven't played a DS
in the unpatched version of crawl in a long time)

My best character was a Mummy Necromancer who got the Orb plus a full
set of runes. Mummy Necromancers are incredibly powerful if you're
patient and careful enough to make it past the early game.
> 8. Most fun class?
Xom-worshipping Chaos Knight. :)

Questions like this are nominally more appropriate for the
playing/strategy groups than for crawl-dev (which is theoretically for
discussing code development), or for the usenet group
rec.games.roguelike.misc (header [CRAWL])... but since we're here (and
some those groups often don't have much in the way of attendance
anyway):
> 1.Merfolk Why ???? and to a leser extent ghoul,Kenku am I missing
> something? Like a secret underwater lev for the merfolk?? :)
Crawl contains certain "challenge" races and classes, which are more
tricky than others to play.. for those who want a challenge. Ghouls
certainly fall in to this catagory, although they do have their
strengths (their ability to heal with corpsemeat can be huge, if you
learn how to use it properly). Merfolk are another challenge race,
who favour less common weapons (polearms) and have some odd skill
biases. They also do very well in areas like the Swamp (They can
swim)... so while it's not a "secret" underwater level.. they too have
their strengths.
Kenku on the other hand aren't a challenge class at all... they're
amazing sorcerers, with access to controlled flight and some other
twinky abilities :)

You're missing quite a few.. to give you a few fair hints, there's one
in the slime pits that's not always present (it can get eaten by the
slimes if you don't hurry) and a fourth one in hell.
> 3. Has anyone ever come across the " game bug " creature in the
Such a thing does exist, but it shouldn't come up. Game Bugs are
generated when the level save/restore code fails (usually, although
there are other possible causes I suppose) in some strange way, and it
doesn't know what kind of creature it's supposed to create. They also
exist occasionally at random in the abyss (althoguh again, they
shouldn't).. because the Abyss is just weird like that :)
> 4. Best God? Item? Class?
Check out the "database" link.. it has a table of players, with their
favorite gods and such. But everyone knows Vehumet is the man, and
amulets of the gormand are Teh Goodness.
> 5. Do draconians get good?
They certainly do.. although not terribly so. The patched version I
wrote a while back attempts to make them a little more impressive
(albeit, at certain costs).. but even in the default version, they
don't suck.
I'll leave the other questions be, as they're more matters of taste.
In general, if you've finished the game with a fighter, try a mage..
it's very different (and vis versa). If you're finding it easy, try a
challenge race, or class.. or both! (just not a halfling hunter ;P).
Just don't trust Brent about what's "easy" or "good". Heh ;)

Gday just spent last 20 mins writing my first post for me to somehow

Nevermind, I figured it out - you just have to type in some of the
first letters (which can been seen in the .sav file name). I mispelled
the last part of the name and it still loaded for me.

The only potion of noticed that has any consistancy of apperance is
the potion of porridge - White and Gluggy!
But I also ran across another funny message today.
I tried to set up my portable alter in the Enumical Temple and it said:
"Don't you think there are alreay enough alters here?" or something
like that. I almost fell off my chair.

Not really, but I usually have loads of unidentified potions so I don't
pay much attention to their colour. And I usually identify the healing
potions by their quantity, so I haven't really paid any attention their
hue when initially drinking them.

Given P = Pray, D = Drop them on the altar, you do one of P then D
or D then P, and I can't remember which. :-)
I think D then P, but either way the reverse won't hurt anything.
You do need an alter for this, though.

Nope; I wait until I'm in a safe place (usually the Temple) and then
drink them to find out what they are.
Remember to take off any unID'd amulet (or ID'd amulet of resist
mutation) before drinking unID'd potions - else you'll risk wasting
a potion of gain stats.
> Do you use identify scrolls?
Never - I think all potions can be ID'd by drinking them, and ?oID are
usually to rare for wasting, unless you can cast Identify.
> Do you randomly pick in a moment of desperation?
Sometimes that, too. :)
Potions of healing and heal wounds are usually the most common, so when
I'm really desperate I'll usually try the unID'd potion I've got the
biggest stack of.
BTW (no relation with your message, but I've just got to tell the story ;) )
I've just come across the most horrible vault I've ever seen that early,
on Dlvl 14... besides being infested with jellies which probably ate
half the nifty items it may have contained, I've already killed a couple
of yaktaur captains...
... and then I spotted the tentacled monstrosity.
Oops. Guess I'll do the Lair first, then. (lv11 SEEE, my best ranged
weapon is still Stone Arrow - not nearly enough...)

Assuming you can handle the weight, you can carry 52 different kinds
of items (one for each lower/upper case letter). You can carry
multiples of some of the items (food, projectiles, scrolls, potions)
and have it only take up one inventory slot.
When I don't have a god to sacrifice items to, I tend to make piles
every level or so. If they are items I might want to use OR that I
don't want picked up and used against me, then I stash them on the
Temple level. It can make for a bunch of running back and forth, but
I've usually found it to be worth it.
