Testing a video game is hard. I'm not going to lie. It really is hard. That's
why you have to have a strong will power. Video game testers need to have a
strong will power to keep rolling with the punches. They can't just give up.
They have to learn how to get back up when they fall.
All video game testing is, is just a system of trials and errors.
You can't just think that just because one tactic worked, that the whole career
is impossible. There are millions of different tactics on how to test a video
game. We are in an information age. The age where information is free, where you
can find an answer to any of problems at the click of a button. There millions
of web site's on the Internet to help you learn more about what you want to do.
As you start your career as a video game tester, you can't just give up. When
you hit an obstacle, find information on how to beat it, and then move on. The
Internet, and libraries are wonderful places to find information. INFORMATION IS
FREE!
When you begin your career and you begin to start losing some tactics, google
will become your best friend. You can type in any situation you're in, and 99%
of the time, google will have the answer.
What I'm trying to get at is this, if you just give up because your not able to
do something, why are you a gamer in the first place? Did you beat every video
game that you played without restarting or by playing the same level over
because you lost? Of course you did. You can't deny it. Just apply that to your
video game testing career., and in no time, you'll become the success you wanted
to be.

I'm actually so bad at roguelikes that I wrote a wrapper script to
save scum for me. My best is still level 15, but then I haven't
played in a bit.

Actually http://collectivecomputing.com/~evilupine/crawl/artifacts.html
just answered my question, I think. The ring of shadows isn't random,
here's it's description:
ring of Shadows - (Ring of Invisibility), black ring
+4 EV, life protection, see invis, -3 to hit, +10 stealth
The way it's written there it sounds like it affects both melee and
ranged attacks
thnx anyway all

Well, if I remember correctly I got a random ring (ring of the
Shadows, i think that's random) which gave me +4 evasion, -3
accuracy, see invisible, life protection, and stealth. I was playing
a Dwarf Healer, fighter-style, so I ended up stowing it and wearing
other stuff. If I'd been sure that -3 accuracy affects only ranged
attacks I might have worn it. With a little experimentation I
figured that accuracy does affect melee fighting but I'm still not
100% certain. Rings of slaying specify that they affect only melee
attacks, but I can't recall seeing anything that says it specifically
affects ranged attacks. Amulets of innaccuracy? That question never
occured to me because there'd be no reason to wear one in the first
place.

So how far have you gotten in this game Robin? I'm still struggling
to get my characters past the 12th lvl hump.

(I play with save scumming because I'm just not good enough to avoid
it).

So I get to dungeon level 10 and find a Silver Statue. I'm a
Minotaur Monk.

Never seen one before, death rapidly ensues.

Reload, discover that no, it's not just me being bad at roguelikes,
it really *is* impossible for a level 10 Monk to beat one of these
things.

My question is, what is the appropriate way to deal with this when
you're *not* scumming? i.e. what would you do if you saw a silver
statue and you were level 10? Just run the hell away?

I'm not sure which file you d/l'd from ftp.dungeoncrawl.org,
but any OS X version there is likely to be a bugfest, anyway.

Basically, the original core development team melted away
waiting for one of its members to commit what he had been
working on for ... well, a long, long time.

Your best bet is to hound the people @ Crawl Stone Soup:

http://crawl-ref.sourceforge.net/

I haven't bothered to play with it (too busy), but I would
guess you'd have to build from source or find someone
off r.g.r.m. who has bundled an OS X package.

I should really carve out some time to update dungeoncrawl.org.

I'm a recent dungeon-crawl addict teaching English in Poland. My
girlfriend has a flashy Apple laptop, and I decided to try to continue
my addiction by getting the Mac OSX version. So, I d/led it, clicked
on the file - and nothing. A quick window pops up (as if it's
unzipping something) and then disappears, but nothing happens, no new
directories are created, and no dungeon crawl! Anyone have any
experience with this version?

-Tim

P.S. I can't seem to make any progress with any character other than a
Troll Berserker, unless I get crazy luck with weapons and armor.

You may be better off getting a better answer from
someone else, but iirc you can use 'a' to use your
glamour ability to paralyze all above-animal
intelligence creatures in sight; elves and orcs are
immune to it though, iirc.

It seems that Silence works on orbs of fire, although this may be a
bug.
Other than that, your best defense is to have fire resistance. An
amulet of mutation would also be nice to have, but you should worry
more about its fire attacks, which I'm pretty sure are the most
powerful attacks in the game. (However, electric golems could kill
you faster with their multiple melee attacks.)
Orbs of fire move and attack at twice normal speed, so you'd need
Haste to run away from one.
It would be quite hard to get enough armor and/or evasion to help you
significantly. And of course, a shield would not help at all.

Orbs of Fire have 20 AC and 20 evasion, so you need to hit very hard
and accurately to kill one. They have 150 HP.
I suggest having 20-something in all skills relevant to the attack
you are using (except Spellcasting, which does not do much for your
spell power).
If using a weapon, use something with at least 15 base damage.
Preferably a vorpal weapon, which will do about 25% more damage.
If using a ranged weapon, use at least a +8,+8 bow (NOT a bow of fire
or frost) and have at least 28 strength, 27 Bows skill, and 13 in
Throwing. Seriously, bows suck and the other ranged weapons are even
worse.
Fire, ice, electric, and poison spells will do no damage, except
hellfire (staff only), magma bolt, fire storm, ice bolt, ice storm,
and poison arrow. Those will be partially resisted, of course, so
the only spells I'd really recommend are crystal spear and iron
bolt. Definitely don't bother with magma bolt, ice bolt, or spells
lower than level 4.

I think I might as well say something about electric golems, too.
They have only 5 AC, and usually less HP, making them much easier to
kill than orbs of fire.
But, their shocking melee attacks make them insanely dangerous for
most characters.
If you don't have electricity resistance, having 20-something evasion
is the only thing that can save you. Armor only helps if you also
have electricity resistance, because the "shock" part of the melee
attack is unaffected by armor and way more damage than the physical
part of the attack.

drop them on an altar then pray (if you are a heathen godless dog then
this lets you join (you might not need to sacrifice to join)

note -- your standing with you god will drop with time so keep

Also if you butcher corpses after praying it devoses the corpse to

kind of thing (ie the healer god)

Heh. You're way ahead of me. I've come to the conclusion lately
that I'm So Bad at roguelikes that I should just hack a version of
Crawl with proper game saves (i.e. no perma-death), because I'm just

I know there hasn't been much activity here this month but I found
this group here and decided what the hey, might as well try to spark
some interest here!

I've been playing Dungeon Crawl for bout a year now and have found
Draconian Monks to be my favored class...mutate claws and you can maul
stuff as well as punch and hit with a tail.

I've also grown fond of Elven Enchanters for some reason...Spriggan
assassins are wonderful fun too if you stay light and have many
potions of speed.

Chaos Knights who worship Xom are fickle fun depending on the gods
mood but I havn't recieved a nasty attack from Xom yet. Can't ever
decide what magic I prefer but then again I've never made it past lvl
16 of the dungeon muchless finished the game.

I patiently await a reply or a greeting of some sort. >_>;
