I'm unsure about your daliances with
"Lulu" but would be really interested in your future projects. Great
news!
I met with Richard
Partridge yesterday at our club gathering and told him of the interest in
the books on this list. He and I would like to express our appreciation for the
comments passed and to let everyone know we have agreed to discuss developing
the Battle Studies series with Partizan Press.
As soon as
anything comes out of the discussions, I’ll put up a post and try to
provide a timetable. At present, Partizanare publishing a series of Peninsular War titles written by
Charles S Grant (the son of the late great Chas. Grant senior who was a
personal friend). As an aside, I’m providing the maps for this series
(Cartography Services). This may mean that Partizan
will want to wait a while before committing to Battle Studies – if they
even decide to go ahead.
If they
decide not to go ahead, we may self-publish using an on-line facility called
“Lulu”.

Just to add my recommendation, I have "Battle
studies", "napoleonic army handbook" and "albuera" and
they are all excellent. Well worth tracking down (I found my copy of the
"handbook" in a second hand shop in Cornwall when on holiday!)

Thank you Mike, that really helps, as that kind of information on Russian and
Austrians is hard to find in a centralised source. I shall be adding these two
books to my already too large library with glee. Thank you.

No, the first
volume covers all nations allied with Britain. This includes Austria, Russia, Spain, Portugal, Prussia, Brunswick, Hanover, Holland&Belgium, Sweden and the Ottomans. Volume 2 covers France and her
allies (including some who were, at various stages, allied to Britain [e.g. Holland]). We have counted the USA (War of 1812) as a French ally so that we could
include them in this volume even though they weren’t strictly a French
ally.
We tried to make
it exhaustive so that wargamers and other interested
parties could produce armies for any conflict in the wars containing the
correct regiments at the correct strengths and in correct uniforms for
individual combats. Unfortunately many records (especially the French) do not
cover unit strengths at specific engagements and, where they do, are frequently
unreliable. So we had to omit this information in many cases. However, we were
able to throw more light on the Spanish army than most others because of data
we obtained from Spanish sources. This filled a huge gap in historical data.

Mike on your Handbooks, do I take it that volume 1 covers Britain and
the allies that fought alongside Britain troops, rather than major allies like
Austria and Russia?

I met with Richard Partridge yesterday at our club gathering and told him of the
interest in the books on this list. He and I would like to express our
appreciation for the comments passed and to let everyone know we have agreed to
discuss developing the Battle Studies series with Partizan
Press.
As soon as
anything comes out of the discussions, I’ll put up a post and try to
provide a timetable. At present, Partizanare publishing a series of Peninsular War titles written by
Charles S Grant (the son of the late great Chas. Grant senior who was a personal
friend). As an aside, I’m providing the maps for this series (Cartography
Services). This may mean that Partizan will want to
wait a while before committing to Battle Studies – if they even decide to
go ahead.
If they decide
not to go ahead, we may self-publish using an on-line facility called “Lulu”.

Just to add my recommendation, I have "Battle studies",
"napoleonic army handbook" and "albuera" and they are all
excellent. Well worth tracking down (I found my copy of the
"handbook" in a second hand shop in Cornwall when on holiday!)

Well as I do LFS in 6mm I would have to say that that would be a
very sensible decision J
There’s a lot of 6mm advice in the files section (written for
LFSv2 but still mostly relevant) that may be of use to you

I appreciate your comments - that helps a greta deal...I may be barking up the
wrong tree w/ doing LFS in 28mm...I still have my 6mm collection as a back up
and might give LFS a go with my 6mm Austrians & French....thnaks!

Faron.
LFS is really more targeted at a ‘Corps’ sized game of
3-4 divisions per side, so you are perhaps on the small side – they’ll
work but I suspect will prove slightly too abstract for the level you’re
looking to portray, sadly. Anyway to answer your questions:
1)Any basing will work for the game, the central tenet is that an
infantry (12 fig) battalion in line does not have double the frontage of a cavalry
(4 fig) column. As I see it your suggested 12” infantry line and 8”
cavalry line would break that guideline (12” is more than double 4”).
You do not need 12 figs per battalion to successfully play but you do need to
keep the relative ratios of unit sizes close to that given because that’s
how combat works.
2)The suggestions for modifying distances is on the assumption that
with 28mm you will significantly increase the unit footprint and hence the
whole ‘feel’ of the game will become skewed. Ordinarily I’d
suggest a straight forward doubling of standard size for 28mm which would mean
you’d be looking at a 12’ x 6’ table. However you are only
looking for a ‘divisional’ game so you may get away with 7’6”
x 3’6”…that’s a big ‘may’ though. In any
event (even for a standard 15mm game) I think 3’6” is way too
shallow.
3)I think that’s a reasonable size but if you were looking for
the next step up from Sharp Practice, it may be that something more akin to an
advance guard division per side (where you get a mix of infantry, cavalry and
artillery) would be appropriate. The problem you will have with ‘normal’
divisions is that most tend to a single type – ether just infantry or
just cavalry.
All in all I think on balance that with your 28mm collection based
as it is and given both the table size you are limited to and the size of
action that you are looking at that you may well find Lasalle or perhaps
General d’Brigade more suitable rule sets (much though it pains me to say
it J) as
they are intended for the size action you are looking at.
Hope that’s been of help

I dearly love "Sharp Practice" but am
also looking to get into a Tactical Napoleonic game at the Divisional level, to
add some diversity to our skirmish gaming. I have purchased "Lasalle"
and will give those rules a try, but being a fan of SP I also want to look at
LFS III. I received the PDF of LFS III today and was looking at the way units
are based. I have not read the rules yet.
I have enough troops to field about 10-12 battalions per side in a Pennisular
setting. All of my figures are 28mm's and the inf are based on single 1"
square stands. My Cav figs are on 1"x2" stands. Artillery are based
as single models on a 2" stand with crew figs on seperate/single bases.
Question:
1. The rules make some suggestions on basing but Im a bit lost. If I use 12 inf
figs per battalion, could I mount 3 figs on a 1"x3" sabot and have 4
bases @ 3 figs each per unit? Cavalry would then be 2 figs per stand on 2"
square sabots so that the frontage of a cav regiment in line/abreast would be
8" and infantry battalions would occupy a 12" frontage in line.
Artillery would occupy a 2" frontage. Will this work for the game?
2. The rules mention modifying the distances for 28mm figs, as LFS would seem
to be designed for smaller figs. Im confined to a 7.5' wide by 3.5' deep table
for my games. Will 28mm figs & LFS III work on that table size? Do any of
you use 28's for the game? Does it work well with 28's?
3. My goal/objective is for each side to represent a division or two. Is this
the right rules set to simulate tactical games? Ie., games that are a step
above skirmish but not quite grand tactical....
Your comments would be most welcome and helpful....
Hi Terry,
My Prussians have a degree of flexibility.
I was using Kleist's II Corps from the 1813 campaign as my basic list to work
from, from Nafziger which has regimental strengths.
Regular Battlaions both Fusilier and Musketeer are 16 figures strong on four
bases of four figs. Regular Prussian Battalions seem to drop rarely below 800
strong. 12 figures in my opinion is too small.
Half the Reserve Battalions are also the same as above.
All Landwehr and the other half of Reservists, four bases of three figures.
Landwehr Cavalry and National Cavalry Regts 8 figures strong.
Hussars, Kurassiers, Dragoons and Uhlans are all 12 figures strong as I included
a couple of figures as Freiwilliger contingents.
Obviously as the 1813 campaign wore on the cavalry strengths dropped
significantly so towards the end of 1813 my regiments are the standard 8 figures
or two regiments are combined into one 8 man unit.

I dearly love "Sharp Practice" but am also looking to get into a Tactical
Napoleonic game at the Divisional level, to add some diversity to our skirmish
gaming. I have purchased "Lasalle" and will give those rules a try, but being a
fan of SP I also want to look at LFS III. I received the PDF of LFS III today
and was looking at the way units are based. I have not read the rules yet.
I have enough troops to field about 10-12 battalions per side in a Pennisular
setting. All of my figures are 28mm's and the inf are based on single 1" square
stands. My Cav figs are on 1"x2" stands. Artillery are based as single models on
a 2" stand with crew figs on seperate/single bases.
Question:
1. The rules make some suggestions on basing but Im a bit lost. If I use 12 inf
figs per battalion, could I mount 3 figs on a 1"x3" sabot and have 4 bases @ 3
figs each per unit? Cavalry would then be 2 figs per stand on 2" square sabots
so that the frontage of a cav regiment in line/abreast would be 8" and infantry
battalions would occupy a 12" frontage in line. Artillery would occupy a 2"
frontage. Will this work for the game?
2. The rules mention modifying the distances for 28mm figs, as LFS would seem to
be designed for smaller figs. Im confined to a 7.5' wide by 3.5' deep table for
my games. Will 28mm figs & LFS III work on that table size? Do any of you use
28's for the game? Does it work well with 28's?
3. My goal/objective is for each side to represent a division or two. Is this
the right rules set to simulate tactical games? Ie., games that are a step above
skirmish but not quite grand tactical....
Your comments would be most welcome and helpful....
Thanks....Faron.
Kev,
How did you base your 1813 Prussians for LFSIII?
The 1813-14 is my choice for LFSIII, actually have some command and cavalry Max
did for me a couple of years ago.

We find that some things speed play up:
- the umpire looking to turn the next card when a player is not going to cause a
combat by his actions
- having a "feel" for the scores needed for artillery to hit so that if an
obviously low or high roll is made you can just declare "miss" or "hit"
- having players be ready to take their turn once their card comes up, rather
than "my card is turned. Now, what shall I do?"
Things that slow play down:
- hesitant players: see above :-)
- getting troops out of boxes/finding them and organising them when they are
spotted. Bob's tip is a really good one.
Cheers,
Daz

game turn than the number of troops on the table, so we try to limit the number
of "commands" per side. More and more often now, in the scenarios I design, I
try to avoid "independent" commands, if possible. For example, having a cavalry
division, rather than two independent brigades, actually saves time (whilst
creating command difficulties, of course). Similarly, I often put corps
artillery directly under the C-in-C and so on.

commands per side (including the C-in-C) and a scenario limited to around 14
game turns and we can get it finished before someone has to go home. If it is an
evening game (say four hours maximum), 4 commands per side and 12 game turns.
This calls for careful thought when designing the scenario.

Just to add my recommendation, I have "Battle studies", "napoleonic army
handbook" and "albuera" and they are all excellent. Well worth tracking down (I
found my copy of the "handbook" in a second hand shop in Cornwall when on
holiday!)

That’s me,
Kev. It was called “Battle Studies in the Peninsula”
but didn’t get the publicity amongst wargamers
that it really needed so we weren’t asked to follow up. Some interest has
been shown in continuing the series by Partizan Press

The playtesting of LFSIII at Wally HQ this summer saw my plan to buy a Prussian
Brigade suddenly become an entire Prussian Corps.
I then ended up getting a Young Guard Infantry Division, Young Guard Cavalry
Division and a Middle Guard Brigade for 1813.
Next year I am spending nowt.

Greetings
I'm planning to upgrade my 15mm Peninsular forces for LFS III - I bought some
OG15 Italian line infantry on Saturday at Warfare - so 4 battalions - and have
just ordered some Spanish militia and volunteers from Timecast and a few Spanish
packs from Warmodelling.

Hi John
Welcome to the wonderful world of LFS. Don't worry, you're not the first (and
won't be the last) sad old git to get excited about these rules. I'm very sad,
very old and almost certainly a git and I found they totally transformed my
wargaming.
As Nick has already said, feel free to raise any questions. In the mean time
though, you will find that LFS is very tolerant of different figure scales. For
example, with cavalry, the only thing really to worry about is that an infantry
battalion in line should not overlap a cavalry column by 100%. So, if you have 8
cavalry figures in a regiment, in column 4 figures wide (based at 20mm per
figure), a 12 man infantry battalion in line should be somthing like
150mm wide (12.5mm per figure, or 1/2" if you really are a sad old git like me).
Depending on your figures, that could be a little too close for comfort (it
would be a tight squeeze for my 28mm figures). If so, don't worry. Leave them
based as they are and play with the convention that an infantry line overlaps a
cavalry column (with a frontage of 2 x 2 man bases) by 50% not 100%. It'll work
just fine.
Cheers

That’s me, Kev. It was called “Battle Studies in the Peninsula” but didn’t get the publicity amongst wargamers that it really needed so we weren’t asked to follow up. Some interest has been shown in continuing the series by Partizan Press and Richard partridge and I may again take up the pen.

...Are you the Mike Oliver by any chance who co-authored a nice little book on the early Peninsular battles a few years back?

Thanks Bob,
It's one of those things we have noted, but at the end of the day, "we enjoy the
journey" and get less concerned about the destination.
Eagerly awating version 3.
Best regards,
Rob

in reaching the real-time benchmark. It all falls to pieces as soon as the first
combats begin. Our average over a game hardly ever falls below 25 minutes per
turn, sometimes longer. We have, however, found the following things helpful.

in separate, labelled boxes, according to their command groups. This makes
things much easier when deploying.

they sort out the tedious deployment thing.
> 3. The number of cards in the pack makes more difference to the length of a
game turn than the number of troops on the table, so we try to limit the number
of "commands" per side. More and more often now, in the scenarios I design, I
try to avoid "independent" commands, if possible. For example, having a cavalry
division, rather than two independent brigades, actually saves time (whilst
creating command difficulties, of course). Similarly, I often put corps
artillery directly under the C-in-C and so on.

because we don't know the rules. I honestly don't know how the other guys do it.

commands per side (including the C-in-C) and a scenario limited to around 14
game turns and we can get it finished before someone has to go home. If it is an
evening game (say four hours maximum), 4 commands per side and 12 game turns.
This calls for careful thought when designing the scenario.
