I believe the Intelliwiki is having issues again
(http://intelliwiki.kylesblog.com). It had trouble before, but I think Kyle
stepped in and fixed it. Hopefully he can fix it again.

BTW, by "having issues" I mean I can't view it at all. :)

Thanks,
Rick Reynolds

Rick,

Kyle just sent me a full backup of IntelliWiki.  :-)  Who was it that was trying to mirror IntelliWiki here on the list?

I should figure out how to host a MediaWiki myself.  A new project for the weekend, eh?

David,

Awesome!  And I assume you meant intellivision.us without the missing 'i' in "vision".  ;-)

One thing's for sure, we need to set up the new MediaWiki to only allow edits from registered users.  That should slake the spamming problem, I'd think.  So I guess it'd be "wiki.intellivision.us"?  Or "intelliwiki.intellivision.us"?  Whatever we decide, Kyle's offered to put a redirect to the new home from the existing address.

Hello:
I was looking through my reference documents on programming and noticed that
for the excellent "De Re Intellivision" book by William M. Moeller, I only have
chapters I, II, VI, and IX. Does anybody know where I can get the rest, or if
there is a printed version I could purchase?

dZ,

As far as i know, those are the only chapters that Willy wrote.  And as far as a printed version for sale, I'm not sure Willy made one.  It's always been this set of DOS IBMSCII text files.  I distribute them with jzIntv with Willy's permission.

Rick,
I isolated the (very simple) game engine I made for Pac-Man into a
straight-forward module. I was planning on writing a tutorial on how to build
an Intellivision game engine and use mine as a case to dissect, but I haven't
gotten around to do so. My hope was to help other beginners jump right into
their own games.

In the meantime, let me know if you are interested in it, I can send you the
source and explain how to use it. It's not a big deal, and it is definitely not
the best approach for all games, but it implements a simple state machine which
is perfectly capable for many types of games. It is also at the heart of
Christmas Carol, so at least it's "proven" effective. :)

	 dZ.

Thanks much for that! I would be interested in the engine. The game I have in
mind might do well to use some of that work - it's a top-down move around a grid
kind of game.

Thanks,

I notice that the game pages aren't populated. Is that an import problem, or
were these pages not populated on the original wiki?

Rick, I just finished going through the database and cleaned out all the
spam I could. There may be some that I missed but a majority has been
wiped out.

I did look at the games before the clean up process and it had spam in it.

The database went from 53mb in size to 18mb.

I'd be happy to volunteer to fill in some content for some (many? all?) of the
games on the wiki. But it isn't clear to me what content we really want there.
The intellivisionlives.com site really has lots of cool info on each of the
games already. And I'm not keen on scraping their site and just republishing
their content.

Maybe each game article could have a link to the intellivisionlives site's
article and then we could add any other material we like (??). Specifically,
I'd love to see images of screenshots, overlays, boxes, etc. There is also a
lot of info on each game at intvfunhouse.com. And I'm trying to add my own
Intellivision content at my website:

I'm hoping someone here can provide some insight into an odd problem that
occurred with my Intellivision I unit many years ago.

At some point, the system refused to play any games except for Imagic titles.
Out of the over 50 titles I had, only Imagic titles would load and function.
Oddly enough, a year or so later, a friend got angry at the system and hit it;
suddenly enough -- related or not -- all of the system's titles proceeded to
work.

Is there any portion of the hardware that could malfunction, but still allow
only Imagic games to function?

With problems like this, start simple...polish the cartridge slot contacts.  I'm not saying that I have had this specific problem, however, with various machines I have had in the past this has solved seemingly erratic compatibility with cartridges.

Maybe you knocked a piece of dust or grime from a certain contact that allowed proper contact used by most cartridges.  Just a guess, but most problems that have to do with one game playing and not another one, start there.

My personal guess:  One of the EXEC ROMs had wiggled loose and was a little flaky.

The Intellivision I EXEC ROM (the built in "operating system" as some call it) is split over two chips.  The first chip holds $1000 - $17FF and the second chip holds $1800 - $1FFF.

Most games, whether Mattel or 3rd party, gained control of the unit via the "normal" EXEC mechanisms.  The simpler games used the built in title screen and took over after you passed that screen.  Fancier games would hook into the title screen code through a special flag that told the EXEC to run the code that appears after the title string.  Either way, that's how most games got launched, and they all required you to be able to get far enough through the EXEC to make it to the title screen.  The boot code and the code that handles the title screen was spread over both chips as well as the GROM chip.

There were some games, though, that hooked into the EXEC at an earlier point.  Three of the Imagic games:  Atlantis, Beauty and the Beast and Demon Attack, all had memory maps that started at $4800.  This memory map corresponded to the Playcable unit.  By hooking this location, the game wrested control very early in the bootup process, and didn't require getting to the title screen code.  I'm pretty sure that very little of the ROM above $1800 needed to function for these games.  (There is some code at $1A83 that gets run during init before checking $4800 and $7000.  But if the failure is just in one of the upper address lines, then this code would have still run OK.)

Atarisoft's games should be a similar story:  They have ROM at $7000, which the EXEC checks around the same time as $4800.  $7000 is where the Keyboard Component's (and later the ECS's) ROM starts.  So, Pac-Man, Centipede and Defender all may've run on your unit.

Now, I did try a very simple experiment where I blanked out the last half of the EXEC ROM and tried to run these various games.  None of the games I listed above ran.  But, if the failure on your unit was more subtle, such as a single flaky upper address line, then it could be that the Imagic games just missed the parts that were misbehaving.

Thanks Joe -- that sounds like a very possible hypothesis.

Those Imagic games you mentioned -- Beauty and the Beast, Atlantis and Demon
attack -- were definitely the ones that worked when all of the other non-Imagic
games failed to operate.

I can confirm this as an issue I had once. I had one with a bad solder
and all it would play was BatB (Did not own demon attack then, and
wasn't tearing them apart yet at that age - so I played a lot of BatB
and jumping off of 'next to the very top of the building' when I got bored).

Sheesh, that was.. many, many, many-many consoles ago.

Not so far as I know.  There's only the two control bits for extending the top and left edges.

I thought so. I worked around it by using a MOB to cover the left border,
double-sized and stretched vertically. It covers up to 8 tiles, which is enough
for what I need. Now Christmas Carol can have multiple tunnels per level, but
only within 8 BACKTAB rows of each other. :)

It's not like the C=64 where you set the background color of the entire screen.
Basically, you need to set the background color of each card in the BACKTAB.
This depends on the color mode: If you are using Color Stack Mode, you can set
the color stack as you wish. This will cause the background to change color to
match the stack, depending on the stack-advance flag of each card.

If you are using FG/BG mode, you must loop through the BACKTAB and set each card
word's background color yourself.

You can get more information in the IntelliWiki:
