Hey, guys, I don't know if I'm going to be able to make the Orx
game tonight. I've got a cold, and my family just informed that
I'm going to a barbe-queue ;) tonight. I guess one should have
some diversity in life... I'll sample the kleenexes of exocitic
foreign locations. So, anyway, don't wait for me. If I can, I'll
drop buy and sneeze hello.

Well, darn! But it's better than missing the game because your family
informed you they are deporting you to Siberia!

BTW, who is planning on coming tonight?

"Planning" is probably a bit too strong... I'm "hoping" to get to be there
tonight, if we can get our bathroom repainted quickly enough for me to be
able to...

LOL...the rules for "Orx" are at http://www.daegmorgan.net/rpgs/orcs.htm

The game is also listed in the in the Resource Library at the Forge.

If the red-on-black is too difficult for anyone to read, I have an alternate page with black text on a white background, not nearly orcish enough, though, ya eye-straining wimps! That one is orcs-bw.htm.

Dude, you're my hero!
That CS is awesome.

BTW, to answer if the game is still on: yes.  I'll be arriving a 8pm Central time, or sooner (depending on how quickly the kids go to sleep), and we'll see how many folks are there.  I'm shooting for three players, but I can run it with two...I also thought about running it with just one player, but realized balance of the mechanics (in respect to Complications and Fate dice and such) make it rather difficult to run a proper game.

I was going to post the same question...does everyone want to play a second session of Orx tomorrow night?
(and if we do, I'd better distribute the rules clarifications I made between the last game and now)

Sorry about not being more on top of things...this week has been hellish, to say the least...we went from 3 vehicles to 0 vehicles in a matter of days.  After my car's engine block cracked, the van's engine...um, "exploded" is the best way I can describe it, and then the other car refused to start.  I'm glad to say we got the last fixed, so we finally have one working vehicle again.

If not, what else is on the agenda?
(I know I'm supposed to run a Sorcerer game, but I'm nowhere near ready to do so yet)

I have it... I'd be more interested in seeing another Orx run for tomorrow...

I'd like to see a game of Donjon (I have it)... but preferreably after we get a chance at Sorcerer...

If you need some time to get ready for Sorcerer, Raven   I could always plan a session (or two) of Pool: Banana Republic II

I'm interested in Donjon, but, like Nathan, I don't have the rules for it.

I like Bob's suggestion of playing Orx, SOAP, then Sorcerer.  I wasn't able to join the first SOAP game, so hopefully I'll be able to this time!  Or we could always play Donjon instead next Monday, or the following Monday, if whomever is going to run it thinks we'll be able to do so without having the rulesbook.

I don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves, though.  If someone wants to run Donjon, speak up!  (Rusty?)

I'll be doing another run of Orx Monday for those interested.  We'll be picking up where we left off...the orcs fleeing from the enraged wizard they just robbed of his gold and his horse (well, the poor horse was actually more like a meal for the orcs).

Hey, who said anything about SOAP? Was someone talking about
SOAP? (I'd love to try it out... one of the cooler looking games
out there.)

Also, I'd really like to try out Zak Arntson's Shadows. Being
the uber-narrativist that I am, Shadows is one of my favorite
games. I think. I haven't played it yet, so I can't be sure. :)

So, the schedule is looking something like:
Orx
The Pool: Bananna Republic II
Sorcerer
Dunjon

Very cool.

This does bring up some questions. Like the feasibility of running a game
when only certain players have copies. For example, I was talking about
playing Universalis. But thinking about it, teaching it online would be a
nightmare, likely (Universalis has an odd learning curve; it takes some
instruction, but after a session of trying it out, it becomes pretty
intuitive). I'd much prefer if all the players in such a game had read the
rules.

In addition, there's the odd ethics of the situation. I could send a PDF of
the game theoretically to the other players. But I have a partner, and I'd
have to check with him first. And I'd be shooting myself in the foot givbing
awa ycopies to potential customers. More importantly, though, it brings up
the subject as it pertains to games that we don't own the rights to. For
example, Dunjon. Having played a bit of Dunjon Krawl, I'll bet that I could
adjust to Dunjon pretty quickly. But some players would probably need to
read the rules.

Interestingly, this is not a problem face to face where you do not have to
make copies of the PDF, just copies of the printout for the players to read.
In our case, the only practicable means to have a player read the game would
be to send him a copy of the PDF. But that's probably not strictly speaking
ethical. We could rely on that player to destroy his copy after play, but
even then, that only simulates the passing of a physical copy, and would be
distribution of the text in a way other than intended.

The point is that the only really honest way to play any indie game that is
available for sale is for each of the participants to have purchased a copy
of the game.

Now, this serves my interests, as it would mean potential sales of my game.
So I am biased. Does anyone else have a view on how to handle such games?

Yeah, but indie games are so cheap, as a rule, is this really a
problem? I mean, Donjon is what, $6? I normally wouldn't even
think twice about buying it, except I'm a bit strapped for cash
right now, at the end of the off-season.

OTOH, remember that any exposure is good exposure. Since you and
Ralph are more or less right here in our faces, it would be easy
for you to decide that giving out a couple of free copies for an
internet test run would be worth the exposure. Or you might not.

That sounds right to me about the schedule.

I'd love to play Universalis, but I agree about not giving free copies to folks. A possible solution, if we have enough game owning players, is to start play with just the folks who know the rules... and have the others lurk.

After watching a session (especially if we are careful to introduce most game techniques, Complication, Challenges etc in the first one) they should be able to dive into the next one.

As far as the other games go... I'd be willing to invest in games like Sorcerer, but I would like to try it first...(unless I were to win that Universe Alice prize money... In which case I'd rather take the prize in Sorcerer and whatever additions I could afford)

I guess my real question is do any players who do not have a copy of say,
Dunjon, and who do not want to buy it, feel that it would be leaving them
out if we were to require that people have said materials to play.

Also, I was being hypothetical, Nathan. I might just give out freebies of
Universalis (or maybe at cost? they weren't cheap). But I can't give out
freebies of Dunjon. So we can't ensure everyone a spot. That's all I'm
getting at.

Well, I may have a solution for this. For the session of Universalis I
played yesterday, I wrote up a summary in my own words of the rules.
It's not very long, and it isn't complete, but with only a few
clarifications, it was adequate. I don't think my summary serves as a
substitute for your & Ralph's deathless prose, but I would not have sent
it out but to close friends that I trust not to just send it out over
the net. I also know they'd either a) never, ever buy Universalis,
'cause they're just not indie-gaming people generally, or b) buy
Universalis because I got them to play it. Win-win, I think, so I did
it with a clear conscience.

If Ralph has no problem with that, I'd gladly send the summary to anyone
who commits to play, because I think that's liable to generate further
sales; or at least more likely to make them than lose them.

What say ye?

Yeah, this is the kind of thing that I was thinking of anyhow. But lets wait
until we have an actual date to play before sending that out. As it stands
it will be at least several weeks before we might play that. Lots on the
schedule already.

I don't see how. I wouldn't feel left out, anyway. I mean, you
wouldn't expect someone to be able to join a D&D game without
having the PHB would you? Why would indie-games be any
different?

You're kidding, right?

Usually, none of my players own anything for the games I play. I stopped
playing D&D back in 82, but until then we hasd one copy that we passed
around. A lot. I can honestly say that I've only played in a handful of
games where there was more than one copy of the rules.

For a game like Dunjon, especially, there's no reason to have more than one
copy floating about. One can memorize all the rules, or have the hard to
memorize ones on a single sheet for reference.

Just my opinion.

But, hey, as long as ya'll are comfortable with playying only what you have
copies of, that's fine with me. I own practically everything, so I won't be
missing any games. :-)

I gotta agree with Mike as far as the ownership of rules for tabletop
play.

Online is a little trickier, perhaps, since telling someone about the
rules of a game gives them a copy, functionally. I've started a thread
on the Forge about this because I think it's of general interest.
