David Helmbold defeated Jeff Tolleson in the finals.
In the first game, Dave was the Axis and Jeff was the allies. The
Germans took the Ladoga Swamp on the first turn, and Moscow on the
second with Leningrad eventually falling due to supplies. The Western
allies took Norway and cleared Africa only on the last turn. A
lend-lease supported soviet offensive threatened Moscow in the second
summer, but a German counterattack barely manged to defuse the threat.
In the end, the two points for Moscow and Leningrad were enough to
beat the Allied single point for Norway.
In the second game, the Soviets deployed heavily in Moscow and the
Ladoga Swamp, so the Germans drove south, engaging 7 units in Baku on
the first turn. The Soviets threw everything that could reach into
the river bend and and managed to take it with their special action,
cutting the Germans in the south out of supply. On the next turn
supply was easily restored while the out-of-supply spearhead cleared
Baku. However, the Soviets pressed East, and (as the Romanians were
removed due to the W-allied capture of Bucharest) managed to take
Kharkov and the Dnepr bend, again cutting most of the German forces
out of supply. Jeff resigned as the cut off forces would have starved
at some point during the winter.
Thanks Jeff for an exciting and enjoyable match.
