Quick terminology check to avoid confusion - tagging is for spending
determination, compelling is for awarding/gaining determination. Players can't
tag their own challenges (like enemy) to spend determination, only their
qualities. GMs can *compel* a player's challenges to award them determination.
GMs can also compel a player's qualities to award them determination. Players
can tag another character's qualities AND challenges to spend determination.

Usually when I (as GM) compel a player's enemy challenge (and award them a
determination point), it's to get them to immediately drop doing something else
to focus on the actions of their sworn enemy. They can always refuse the compel,
but that costs them a point of determination instead. But if the NPC villain
merely shows up at the same location as the hero, for example as a guest at an
event like a big charity ball the hero is also attending, I usually don't award
determination just for that. Not until the villain takes some antagonistic
action.

I'll be there, doing my "Industry Guest" things and staffing the Green Ronin booth the rest of the time. You can find my GenCon schedule on my blog:

Of particular interest may be "Supergame Team-Up!" at 2:00 PM on Saturday – Dennis (Wild Talents) Detwiler, and Stan! (Marvel Saga) Brown and I talk superhero RPGs!

Hope to see some of you there!

Sadly, I don't think I'll be able to make any of your seminars due to working a booth myself. But I'll see if I can swing by and say hi.

In celebration of the Stark City Kickstarter hitting the 50 percent mark, both
John Post and Dan Houser have agreed to run special GenCon only sessions of
ICONS for around 50 bucks.

50 bucks! Supplies are limited (only 4 games)

If you're interrested, we've added two new backer levels at 50 (for Dan) and 51
(for John) on the main Stark City KS page - check it out!

As things have been really quite here (all around too much face-melting to post I suspect) I thought I'd point out a thread on a roleplaying forum about running supers game which I feel is full of good ideas (even if I posted there myself).

Just a little warning, therpgsite is a bit of a rough place. Not all threads there are quite so friendly.

Also in unrelated news, they finally started showing season 2 of Avengers EMH in the UK. Absolutely awesome!

Thought I'd share this, as I don't think the people from Purple Duck Games are part of the group

Heroic Moments for ICONS!Purple Duck Games is proud to present Heroic Moments: The Possesion of Dr. Diamond for the ICONS Roleplaying Game.

‘Doctor Diamond’ is a name known to most of the inhabitants of the City. He is an obsessed scientist overtaken by his theories of using diamonds and other crystals to break the dimensional barrier. Over the years this obsession has led him into several diamond and jewel heists attempting to get the materials he needs for his experiments. This almost always leads him back to jail at the minimum sentence for being just that pathetic.

All of that changed a week ago when Dr. Diamond succeeded in opening a doorway to another world. Zyr-Khan the Conqueror, a crystalline spider from the world on the “other side†leapt onto Dr. Diamond and instantly possessed him.

Since then the doctor’s reputation has changed. Dr. Diamond continues to plot ways to steal dimensional technology, but now there is a dark edge to the formerly soft spoken Doctor’s plots. In the last two heists two bystanders have been gravely wounded. Most troubling of all, the heists have been successful. Few suspect Zyr-Khan’s true plan is to create a dimensional bomb to send itself home, dragging the city with him in the process.

Events come to a head when the possessed Dr. Diamond breaks into the best equipped physics lab in the city, taking hostages in the process.

Heroic Moments is the series of single scenes (or heroic moments) for four-color superheroic games like the ICONS Roleplaying Game. This series is designed to be dropped seamlessly into any existing superhero campaign. All Heroic Moments are set in “The City,†which has many of the same features of any typical comic book setting. Locations in The City are left somewhat vague to make adaptations easier.

Yeah, I had been picking these up to convert to other systems, as I felt 4C was
too limited a retroclone of FASERIP. I've had conversations on G+ with the head
of Purple Duck, and had asked if they were planning on versions for other
systems. Glad to see he chose one that will hopefully give their material access
to larger audiences. Now they just need to convert some of the older ones, as
some of the others are pretty good too.

I have a text file in my ICONS folder called "Soylent Green" where I save a lot
of your ICONS posts and observations. It got a little larger tonight. :)

That was a really good thread - and Tim Kirk (Silverlion) is a smart egg. Thanks
for sharing that - definitely worth the read.

We were happy to start producing mateiral for the ICONS system. The author of
this particular Heroic Moment had actually been in discussions with Daniel
(Highmoon Games) a while back to have this happen. When he saw that we took over
the Heroic Moment brand he brought the file to us.

(Hey feel free to delete if this is _too_ off topic.)

Just thought since it was a fund-raiser at a comic shop - it might be close
enough.

The folks at All C's (the one comic shop in Aurora, CO) are having a fundraiser
this weekend for the victims of the theater shooting here last month.

When I lived in Aurora, All C's was my FLCS. They're good people stepping up to
do the right thing and they deserve your support.

If you can give them a tweet or a like - that'd be great. The relevant facebook

If you'd rather contribute directly - the link for that is

Stark City Update

As we've passed the 2k mark and are chugging towards the goal we've started
thinking about Stretch Goals.

The latest update lists several of the adventures we're developing as
unlockables once we pass the funding goal.

While we are feeling good about our chances, we're not there yet. If you're a
fan of ICONS who wants to see the system get a first class setting (and
Kenson-penned Setting Rules) - please consider becoming a backer.

If I wait for a good weekend, I'll discover that my wife has already booked it. So I am tentatively setting the afternoon of September 22 aside, 2:00-5:00 my time (EDT, I believe) to run a modified version of Gangbusters on RPG20.

It might get cancelled; my wife might discover that there's something that weekend I have to do; she might actually have work-related tasks that have to be done. But at least by claiming it almost a month in advance, I might be able to get the time free.

Modifications include the idea that this is the first solo case for the group, a franchise of the already-successful Storm Agency in another city. So players have to be willing to have signed on to this group; the company understands the need to have secret identities and such, so they don't ask for a lot (though the more they provide, the more they ask for).

Let me know if you're interested. My Internet connection sucks, so I'll probably cap this at 4-5 players.

Characters: I prefer random roll or 145 point point-buy, but this is the Internet: I have to trust you unless you roll it with me, and that doesn't sound like fun for either of us. Assuming this goes forward, I'll want characters by the Monday before so I can customize the session.

All of this is still tentative, but heck, gotta try...

The amount of talent on this project is insane.  If you haven't been to the kickstarter site and are a fan of the group it pays to check it out.  Plus there have been free unlockables along the way

Check em out and spread the word!

Walt

I assume he's been busy with personal things.

I started to "Report to moderator" but there's just too many messages. Of the more than 14,500 members, I'd guess fewer than 100 have posted relevant things.

Well - the latest info was posted by Steve Kenson on rpg.net earlier this week

here's the link
http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?612670-ICONS-Team-Up-will-we-EVER-see-it&p=1\
5841894#post15841894

and here's the quote:
"The information I was given at GenCon has, once again, been revised... I'm now
told I will see proofs for TEAM-UP "around" this weekend. When I have more
information, I'll make it known."

Many thanks to Mr Kenson for keeping us ICONS fans informed.

Well, over on rpg.net, Steve Kenson said that he's supposed to see the proofs this weekend.

How's that? (I'd give you the link, but can't get there from here, due to a nannywall.)
