You say "Okay, as I said, this is going to be logged. If you want to
ask an
semi-anonymous question, you can page me."
Tengu doesn't have an actual agenda. :) Basically we're here to talk
about
wizard culture. So everyone feels more comfortable in using the
information
in +info and in making up new stuff on the fly. Unlike spells,
you /can/
invent bits of wizard culture during the course of rp. You're also
encouraged to submit it for the +info.

+info CULTURE :: about wizard culture
After the Wizarding world voted to hide itself from the muggles,
trying to obscure the truth with legend and myth, their culture took a
sharp turn. The differences which until then had been minor, now
became
much bigger. In the present day, wizard born children have at best
spotty
information about the muggle world. Information is available, but one
must know where to look. For a real life analogy, think about what
you
might know about a very foreign culture, and then add in the fact that
many wizards are purposefully ignorant of such.
Wizards have thus developed a culture all their own. Much of it
parallels
the muggle world, as they had shared interests up until a few hundred
years ago.

You say "The +info entry is '+info culture'. The subjects currently
in there
are: art, music, fashion, food, games, and publishing. Is there a
subject
in particular people would like to start with?"
Eclypsia says "Games"
Marc has arrived.
Marc slips in.
You say "Games. Okay. Anything in particular about games? In the
books we have
wizard chess, exploding snap. For sports we have Quidditch and
Quodpot.
Ruby ran a game of wizard croquet quite awhile ago. The rules are
in the
+info. And there's a log in the logs archive."
You say "groups.yahoo.com/group/hpmush-logs/ btw."
Eclypsia says "I did see that. I was wondering if there could be more
games or
perhaps festivals of some sort. I think it would be fun to hold
events and
challenges perhaps?"
Timmy says "There's a marbles like game whose name escapes me at the
moment..."
Vanya says "Er. What's Quodpot? That's not ringing any bells."
Marc says "It's what the Americans play instead of Quidditch."
Marc says "The wizarding equiv. of football."
Vanya nods. "Okay, thanks."
Madeline says "Gobstones, Timmy?"
Madeline says "I /think/."
You say "Anyone is welcome to try to get together a game or a
tournament. We
do ask that you give it some thought first and submit it
the 'plots' +mail
alias. We'd prefer they not be straight Muggle games though."
Eclypsia says "Maybe some underwater related sport?"
You say "Quodpot gets some passing reference in Quidditch Through the
Ages."
Tommy knocks his head into the wall, as he thinks of a crazy comment.
Cassie has arrived.
Cassie stumbles in belatedly and pulls up a beanbaggy. ^^
Timmy says "Gobstones."
You say "Here's the lexicon entry on Games. It's very short. :)"
You say "http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/devices_a-g.html#games"
Echidna says "Someone's welcome to submit rules for Gobstones. A
player has
already done so for Exploding Snap, so anyone can play that if
they wish."
Eclypsia says "I suppose, it's that I have always envisioned that the
wizarding community would be highly competitive. I love quiddich
of course,
but it would be great to develop some games."
Joseph has arrived.
Joseph dances in.
Cassie pounces on Joey and snugs him. :D
Eclypsia says "How about a staff game of quiddich or something like
that?"
You say "Anyone is welcome to get up a practice or pickup game of
Quidditch.
We also run the regular Quidditch games of course. It's difficult
for the
Admins to be motivated to do /more/ Quidditch or more of other
games,
because the interest in Quidditch has not been as high as one
would hope."
You say "Most games, we're lucky to have 3 players on each team. When
ICly
there are 7. Each player usually has to end up NPCing one or two
other
players for the game."
Eclypsia says "Ohh that's a shame."
Vanya waves her flag. "Try out for Quidditch!"
Timmy blinks, and would were it not against the rules for Firsties to
play.
You say "Not that the games aren't great fun and our players have
been very
good. We just could wish for more players. :)"
Muffy is a house-elf. Can house-elves play Quidditch? ;)
Muffy ahems and sends rogue bludgers at everyone ;)
Eclypsia says "I really think a faculty vs student game might get some
interest going."
Cassie pouts and strengthens her resolve to try out next year when
she's a
twosie.
Tommy eats the bludgers...
Joseph flexes.
You say "So anyway, if you think up some interesting game, submit it
to plots.
You'll want to read the +info on croquet and exploding snap to get
an idea
of what we're looking for."
Eclypsia says "got it."
You say "You can invent something from scratch, or just put a
wizarding touch
on an old Muggle game/sport."
You say "Any questions on games/sports?"
Timmy says "What would we do to get a pickup game of Quidditch going?
Would we
need Admins around or...?"
You say "Nope. As long as the pitch isn't in use, just get some
players
together."
Muffy plays with a shiny knut. This House Elf doesn't have games. No
questions
from this end.
Pixie says "If your character doesn't have equipment, the school does
have
some available. You would have had to go find Hooch and get her to
let you
into the broom shed. You can RP that you've done this without
asking the
admins."
Timmy nodnods, "Cool."
You say "Okay, other topics were: art, fashion, food, music, and
publishing.
And anything we don't have +info on yet. :)"
You say "Anyone want to pick one?"
Tommy picks Publishing?
You say "Did you have a question or comment about it? :)"
Tommy just wanted to know how the things regarding that field is,
here... @;o)=
You say "Publishing is an area where Rowling has given us quite a
bit. Random
magazines. Random books.. Even some publishing companies."
You say "We had/have a few authors on the game, and people whose
families own
publishing companies. So the +info details some of that."
Worthing reminds you to see his published works for an example. -Wink-
You say "If you happen to /be/ an author or have invented a
publishing company
or magazine or suchlike, you're encouraged to submit that for the
+info."
Joseph raises his hand.
You say "Basically wizard publishing is a lot like Muggle publishing.
The
pictures in the books will usually move though. :) But there are
similar
categories. Mysteries, romance, children, young adult. There are
even comic
books."
You say "You don't have to raise your hand. Yes, Joseph?"
Joseph okies. "Im wondering...lol...about wizard music? Is it like
Rock n'
Roll? Or just classical type?"
Tengu points towards the +info which should answer your question. :)
You say "We have a number of wizarding bands that are PCs. Most of
them are
rock. Though of course it's not exactly like Muggle rock. :)"
Eclypsia says "I have a question. Who makes all the magic items?"
You say "If you look at the logs, we've had um.. 4 or 5 different
groups
performing on camera."
You say "I'm not sure I understand the question. We don't have coded
@created
magic items."
Cassie says "I'd think that at least one classical composer would
have to be a
wizard in the HP World. Aside end."
You say "ICly, most magic items will be created by factories or
craftsmen."
Eclypsia says "I mean for example who makes invisibility cloaks, the
mirror,
the sorting hat etc. Is it an art?"
Madeline says "Well, Godric Gryffindor made the sorting hat via a
charm. n_n;;
If I'm correct."
You say "Invisibility cloaks would be made by a master tailor who had
the
money and means to acquire the supplies and the knowledge and
skill to make
one. The Sorting Hat was created by the founders of Hogwarts."
You say "Brooms are made by factories."
Pixie says "at factories. :)"
Pixie says "The factories are not sentient. ;)"
Timmy fehs, "We know the truth..." ;)
Tengu mmhmms.
Tommy grins, "You mean, there are such things as non-sentient
factories?"
You say "Back to music, there are certainly classical groups as well.
There
will be Irish and Scottish groups too. I /believe/ the Weird
Sisters used
bagpipes?"
Timmy nods, "They did."
Cassie grins.
You say "In short, all kinds of music. Just like there's all kinds of
books."
Muffy tosses in a random question. Apart from music bands and games,
what
other forms of entertainment would exist in the wizarding world?
Madeline always thought that there might be radio shows or something
akin.
n_n; On the wireless.
Timmy eyeshifts, "House Elves. We could make them race."
You say "Oh, we have assumed there are plays, musicals, and operas.
And
reading a good book is entertaining! :)"
You say "There are definitely radio shows. Talk shows, music shows,
news
shows."
Muffy can't run very fast.
Muffy nods. Just checking.
You say "All sorts of races too. People will race anything."
Worthing says "Even firsties!""
Timmy decides to start the first Hogwarts House Elf Bobsledding
competition.
Timmy glares at Worthing.
Pixie says "The elves probably won't slide very well."
You say "Radios do /not/ work at Hogwarts though. So the students are
out of
luck at school. :)"
Timmy says "Which is why we put them on a sled."
Worthing chuckles and slaps a number on Timmy's back
Pixie says "Nothing to do but study!"
Muffy slides on Timmy instead!
Pixie says "Probably why quidditch is so popular. :)"
You say "And the library. :)"
Worthing says "And misbehaving."
Timmy nods, "How IS misbehaving taken in the Wizarding community? I
mean are
people gonna look down on you if you're a notorius prankster?"
Cassie giggles.
Eclypsia says "I think it's artistic to be a prankster"
Timmy says "Or just Filch?"
Vanya thinks the type of prank would affect that. Don't hurt anyone.
Pixie says "Well, when people are just starting to learn magic, about
all they
/can/ do are parlor tricks and silly hexes. Most people will grow
out of
the pranking phase as they grow up, because they'll see how
pointless it
is. It's tolerated to a point by the adults, though the other
students are
likely to get vicious very quickly. In the greater wide world of
wizards,
you're not going to find pranks taking place on a regular basis,
if at all."
Pixie says "Novelty items like from Zonko's really have their market
in the 15
and under crowd."
Cassie says "Maybe a good way to think of it is if whether or not
you'd buy a
non-magical joke item as that character.. like 'biting' stick gum
or
whoopee cushions.. :/"
Cassie blushes. "Correct me if I'm mistaken..."
Tengu nods. It might help to stop and think if /you/ would buy a
whoopie
cushion. Or if you would've bought one when you were 11-17. :)
Timmy chuckles, nods.
You say "Did anyone want to talk about art, fashion, or food? Or
anything
else?"
You say "I think the easiest things to invent on the fly are books. I
have fun
with that. :)"
Worthing says "fashion?"
Madeline says "Oh! I figure I will mention that I'm working on a
+info culture
travel entry. n_n Wizards do go on holiday, I'm sure, so if any of
you have
a locale that you would like to see included give me a page or
+mail. I
wanted to mention that before I forgot. n_n; I figure it'll help
with where
to go during the winter and summer holidays besides the obvious
choices of
Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. (Rar. That was sort-of random, I know.
x_x)"
Hermione has arrived.
Timmy bahs, has always enjoyed wandering Diagon Alley aimlessly. ;)
You say "The basic idea behind wizard fashion is that they tend
towards the
outdated or outrageous. They will generally wear robes and/or
cloaks when
out in public. Adult wizards seem to have a fondness for hats of
all types.
Taking a look at the scenes in Diagon Alley in the movies are a
good way to
get ideas."
Worthing says "My question was more along the lines of brands and
such, would
they have runway shows and things like that?"
You say "Without the robes and cloaks, wizards dressed as wizards
would still
look odd or anachronistic to Muggles. And we see that even when
some
wizards are attempting to look like Muggles, they don't always
succeed."
Delila says "What if you are a muggle and get the whole idea of how
to dress
in the muggle world. Would it be out of the question to be toned
down in
the wizard world?"
Cassie says "Gotta go, have a good time everyone. :)"
Cassie has disconnected.
You say "Ah.. there are fashion magazines, fashion models, and fashion
photographers, yes. But they are not likely to be of the Sports
Illustrated
Swimsuit model or playboy type models. Witches don't generally
wear very
revealing clothing. And almost all models would be 18+ in age."
Eclypsia fixes her bodice in that case
You say "You don't need a figure to model most robes. :)"
Hermione figures not, not when they can model themselves. ^.~
Pixie says "And, well, I'd expect most of that to be centered in
France and
Italy anyway. It's the climate. :)"
Eclypsia says "I like hermione's idea that the clothes are charmed to
model
themselves. That would be a cute show."
Timmy can imagine the fashion designers talking to the
clothes, "You're a
tiger! You're a tiger!" But still a good idea. :)
Eclypsia says "That was what you meant right?"
Worthing laughs!
You say "Muggleborn wizards/witches will still probably want to dress
like
witches/wizards when in Diagon Alley and assorted wizard places.
To dress
as a Muggle would make you look out of place. And could make you
the target
of unpleasantness."
Delila says "Thanks"
You say "Everyone going to Kings Cross to board the train will want
to look as
Muggle as they can manage. :) And then change into their u niform
on the
train."
Eclypsia says "Draco in Air Force Ones"
Jessica has arrived.
Jessica slips in, extremely late. Woops.
Timmy says "Squibs. Would they dress like Muggles or like Wizards?
Filch
dressed like....Filch. :/ Not really Muggle but I wouldn't call
his clothes
very wizardish either. And would they be seen wandering Diagon
Alley, maybe
working in the shops or..?"
You say "Squibs basically have a choice. They can try to live like
Muggles or
they can live as Squibs in the wizarding world. So their dress
would depend
on how they've chosen to live."
You say "They hold some of the more menial jobs in the wizarding
world. Sort
of a step above house elves."
Timmy kicks his ISP.
You say "You wouldn't know who was a Squib just by looking at them."
Muffy mutters. House elves aren't -that- low down in the... er...
wait.
*scuttles under the cushions*
Hermione bites her tongue regarding house elves, if only because these
meetings are OOC. ^.^;
Tommy sits on Muffy?
You say "Well, House Elves can at least do magic. So they fill a
different
niche than Squibs would. :)"
Timmy makes a note to self about avoiding House Elf jokes were he to
be placed
in Gryffindor House...;)
Muffy hahs! And has more magic than Filch!
Jessica chuckles.
Timmy says "We were talking about factories earlier...who exactly
works in
them? I mean it doesn't take much magical skill to tie twigs onto
a broom
handle, so could that be done by our friendly Squibs or is it
assumed that
some wizards do go off to work in factories?"
You say "A lot of the factory work would be automated by magic. And
it /does/
take magic to put all the spells on the brooms. I wouldn't imagine
a lot of
Squibs would work in them."
Marc returns from the idle-out grave.
Jessica wonders where Squibs would work, then?
Timmy thinks he knows one who's an accountant in the Weasley family.
You say "And almost all magical objects created in factories would be
like the
brooms. There'd be some enchantments on them. And like I said
before, a lot
of things are created by individual craftsmen. Wands certainly,
but also
clothing and all sorts of other things."
Marc says "Bill Weasley isn't a squib by any means."
You say "Nobody said Bill was, Marc. :)"
Pixie says "Bill Weasley isn't an accountant."
Marc says "Sorry, mis-interpreted something."
Vanya says "There's a second cousin of Molly's, I believe, who's a
sqib
accountant."
You say "The Weasleys have a Squib who's an accountant yes. Though he
may be
living in the Muggle world to do it. A cousin or a uncle or
something, I
forget which. :)"
Vanya says "Squib. Ahem."
Timmy didn't mean Bill. :) Yeah, that guy. :)
You say "Basically Squibs can take any job that doesn't require
magic."
Marc is illuminated. :) Cool.
You say "But there is also a prejudice against them. So they're
unlikely to
get anything very high up or well-paying."
Timmy has partially disconnected.
Jessica nods. "Like ... working as a waiter or as a clerk at a pet
shop?
Tommy goes to sleep...
Joseph says "That's why Filch is a janitor."
You say "Right, waiter and clerk would probably work."
Jessica nods.
Jessica ponders the idea of having a squib waiter or waitress in her
parents'
restaurant.
Joseph stretches. "School starts back tommorow. G2G. Bye!"
You say "Anyone have any other thoughts?"
Muffy wonders what we -haven't- covered?
You say "Food. :)"
You say "And art."
Madeline mms.
Eclypsia says "What's an 18+ line of chocolate?"
Pixie says "Well, aside from shape, they have interesting... effects."
Eclypsia says "Ahhhhhh"
Timmy says "Honeydukes Edible Underwear. *eyeshifts*"
Pixie snerks.
Matthew snickers.
Muffy says "So how much food can be invented on the spur of the
moment?"
Lark has connected.
You say "Well, as it says in the info, most food is basically just
common
British food. Though wizards do seem to have a fondness for
pumpkin for
some reason. :)"
Timmy can't fathom why.
You say "Most food won't have any effects. That goes back towards the
pranks/tricks idea. Candy is more likely to, because candy's
always meant
to just be fun. Like pop rocks. :)"
Muffy nods. I'll modify the question slightly, then - how many candy
effects
can be invented on the spur of the moment?
Madeline snickers and wonders if there are any wizard urban legends
about
butterbeer and fizzing whizbees.
Timmy says "You'll shoot your eyes out with them you will."
Lark grins.
You say "We'd rather you didn't invent new effects. Ones that have
already
been used.. .like changing hair color or things like that are
fine. But new
ones should be run by the plots +mail alias."
Muffy nods. K
You say "Anything else or can we wrap up?"
Timmy has a question about theatre. "When they get to the famous
scene in
Julius Ceaser, (assuming they DO Julius Ceaser) and Brutus pulls
forth his
wand and bellows, "Avada Kedvara!"(for we all know Brutus was
really a
wizard)...How does Mr. Ceaser's actor not die?" ;) Nah I'm good.
Eclypsia says "Thank you for having the meeting.""
You say "The answer to /that/ is they wouldn't be performing Muggle
theatre.
:)"
Worthing thwaps Timmy, "Caesar... Caesar."
Timmy thwaps Worthing, "Shut up, shut up!" :)
Lark says "LOL"
Matthew laughs.
Worthing says "There will be no thwapping of professors, thank you
very much!"
Hermione sniffs. "Yet another problem that needs addressing. But
another issue
that I'll stay off the soapbox until back IC." ^.^
Timmy isn't a firstie yet, he can hit who he wants....inches away from
Hermione. ;)
Matthew is curious now.
Hermione is referring to wizards and their distaste for Muggle
culture.
Harrumph. ^.^
Matthew says "Ahhh. o.o"
Timmy ohs, "That's safe. Thought you were going to force all the
firsties to
join S.P.E.W. or sommat." ;)
Hermione says "Careful what you wish for. ^.~"
Madeline snerks.
Timmy peers at Hermione. Fears.
Eclypsia says "I see it less as distaste and more like... Country
music or
rednecks"
Matthew says "Depends on the wizard :P"
Muffy was just about to say that, Matthew ;)
Timmy heys! I like country music and I'm not a redneck. ;p And yeah,
I think
it really depends on the Wizard, look at the Malfoys and compare
them with
the Weasleys.
Pansy has arrived.
Madeline seats on Pansy, randomly.
Matthew grins.
Madeline sits, too. x_x
Hermione nods to Timmy (and avoids the ICly aghast reaction). "Both
purebloods, but on one hand extremely purist, and on the other
curious
about Mugglish things."
Pansy gives Madeline a friendly jab with her wand.
Timmy says "Bingo. And of course there's most assuredly those in the
middle,
probably like Professor McGonnagal and Hagrid. They don't care
either way
about Muggles as long as they don't interfere in their own work."
Aurora has arrived.
Matthew says "And the rest is...silence..."
Timmy thinks his brains are showing again, sticks them back into his
ear.
Pixie says "I think that's it, guys. Thanks for coming. :)"
Hermione says "Thanks much, folks!"
Matthew says "Thanks, admin-type-people..."
Muffy thanksies also! :)
Timmy says "Thanks for having us. ;) *runs back to Diagon Alley so he
can
study s'more for his sorting test*"
