Hogwarts Grounds - Lake
This vast, still lake borders the trees of the Forbidden Forest, the craggy
stone cliff that supports Hogwarts, and the grassy meadow of the school's
grounds. Even in the foulest of weather, the lake's surface remains as smooth as
glass, never seeming to do more than ripple. Reminiscent of a Scottish loch, the
darkness of its depths is impenetrable, and yet retains a pure, potable quality.
Occasionally there are flickers of darting movement in the shadows beneath the
surface, but surely it is nothing more than fish or frogs, or perhaps the gentle
movement of underwater reeds. On the shore by the meadow, the water is fringed
with willowy green plants, and there is a nice bit of green lawn where one might
sit and enjoy the view.

Meadow Harbor Path
Finally, it seems winter has receeded and the early signs of springs are
abundant this Sunday morning. Cora's sitting near the lake, resting her back
against a rock, and studying the dark purple petals of some crocuses nearby. Her
book bag is near, so studying must be on the agenda.
Jeoffrey has been spending a lot of time with his nose in a book, that, or
otherwise off by himself. So it's a rare thing for him to be walking out by the
lake today, a bag over one shoulder as he moves along.
Cora doesn't see your approach, as her eyes are drawn from the flowers out to
the vastness of the loch. She sighs a bit, a weary hand eventually reaching
towards her book bag and tugging it towards her. She doesn't open it yet,
though.
Jeoffrey finally catches sight of you himself, and moves quietly to stand behind
you, off to the side. He doesn't say anything as he towers over you, just
watching for the moment.
Cora is preoccupied it would seem, as she pulls back the flap on her worn book
bag. Her Law text is removed. She stills some as she rests the text in her lap,
her legs criss-crossed and tries to shake that spooky feeling that she's being
watched. She then notices the shadow you are casting, and whips her head around,
then slowly peering up. Her right hand shields the suns glare from her face as
she tries to figure out who has snuck up on her. Before anything registers a
warning is sternly issued, "Jepson, I am /not/ in the mood for your childish
...." then her words fade off, as she recognizes you. "Oh. Uh, hello," she says,
a bit flatly.
Jeoffrey raises an eyebrow as he says quietly, "I realize I haven't been around
much, but I didn't think that it was /that/ hard to tell who I was."
Cora purses her lips, and lapses into a moment or two of quiet, "Yeah well,
shadows can be deceiving," she finally says, nonchalantly. She seems about to
say something else, but visibly bites her lip to silence the comment. Her
fingers crack open her Law book, "Something you wanted then, Winthrop?"
Jeoffrey frowns and says, "I don't know, Cora. Should there be something I
want?" He moves to lean against the tree, not approaching you at all now.
"Obviously there is nothing you want."
Cora glances down at her law text a moment, desperate for distraction, but
clearly not finding any, "Well things are supposed to be awkward right? I mean
... I'm sorry I don't quite know what to say to my ex-boyfriend who I haven't
seen since October. I figure you've been off ... doing whatever with whomever. I
can't stop you anymore ...." she almost rambles in her delivery, then the words
fade off.
Jeoffrey shrugs, "I haven't seen much of anything other than the inside of my
textbook. As I recall, it was you who broke it off with me, not the other way
'round. I'm trying to finish my education here before I go do....whatever the
government will let me know."
Cora shakes her head some, "Still willing to just let the government dictate
your life to you? That's ... terribly disappointing."
Jeoffrey says mildly, "Unless I want to go grubbing for potatoes somewhere and
live in the dirt, I pretty much have to have the Ministry's permission to hold a
job, now don't I?"
Cora snorts, "No .. actually you don't."
Jeoffrey rolls his eyes, "Well, true, there are the sketchy characters who would
hire me."
Cora clears her throat, "Did I tell you I found out who attacked us?"
Jeoffrey frowns. "No. You didn't. I suspect you haven't told anyone, either."
Cora gives a bit of a shrug, "No one else would really care, would they? I
actually approached him about it ... but nothing he said that was satisfactory."
Jeoffrey raises an eyebrow, "I can't see that Professor Lupin wouldn't care, or
ex-Minsister Black. I don't know as much about the Headmaster, but I could see
him caring simply because we are students here."
Cora snorts a bit, and shakes her head, and shrugs a little, "I don't think
anyone cares. We'll never see him brought to justice for it, that is for
certain," she sounds sad and frustrated by this.
Jeoffrey shrugs, "You never know. But if you do not tell anyone, he most
definitely will not. So who is it?"
Cora pushes a handful of long uneven tresses from her face, "You won't believe
me," she says, "No one will. So it almost doesn't matter anymore."
Jeoffrey rolls his eyes. "No one will believe you if you do not tell them, Cora.
You do such a wonderful job of pushing everyone away... Or perhaps Jepson is a
better choice for you?"
Cora continues to avoid answering the bigger question, "Oh Merlin's Pants...
Jeoffrey how many times do I have to tell you I am /not/ interested in Jepson?
He's ... an annoyance more than anything else."
Jeoffrey mmhmms. "And yet you kissed him while you were still dating me. Some
annoyance. I should be annoyed more often, I think." He pauses, "You're avoiding
the question, though. Who attacked us?"
Cora sighs now, annoyed, "And I told you it was a mistake. My gosh I was just
out of St. Mungo's or had you forgotten the month I spent there healing? I
probably would've kissed Harry Potter if he had been there, such was my state."
Jeoffrey mmhmms. "Still avoiding the question, Cora. Or should I just let the
Headmaster know that you know who did this? Or better, send an owl to Feldspar
and let her shriek at you."
Cora slaps closed her book, "The Headmaster, is not going to /give/ a rats ass.
Get that through your head. And let Feldspar shriek. It's all she ever does."
Jeoffrey mms and nods. "I'll just let him know, then, since you aren't bothering
to say anything. Nice to know you don't trust anyone at all." he pauses, then
moves away from the tree, apparently ready to walk off.
"That's pretty rich, coming from the likes of you, Jeoffrey Winthrop," she calls
after you, her words dripping with sarcasm.
Jeoffrey shrugs and says, "I trust more than you do, Cora." And then he's
walking away.
