I recently read this in rpg_player_sanctuary and thought it
interesting enough to check out and pass along. I am reposting the
entire message here for the benefit of the group. As you can see I
have instigated a rule in my own groups banning grouply.com email
extensions.
Missiledine
To my players:
I am reposting a message that has recently appeared in
some of the game support forums. Having done a bit of
follow up research myself I have decided that I will
not permit grouply.com email extensions in my groups
and games.
I apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may
cause.

Warning about Grouply.Com

Warning about Grouply.Com
I have recently become aware of a new site which
advertises they can
make accessing your groups `faster and easier'. A
monitor of another
group shared this information with me:
"Over the past few days I've researched the Grouply
service from both
the pro and con perspectives, poured through numerous
posts on the
various Yahoo Groups technical and management lists,
and examined
comments from Grouply advisory board members as well
as the CEO and
co-founder and all have helped me to the conclusion I
hold regarding
the service. While Grouply is the only service
mentioned by name, as
other services are developed that offer similar
services the policy
explained below will be expanded to encompass the new
companies. When
you join Grouply.com, several things will occur which
you may not be
aware will happen:
First, when a member joins, it automatically changes
their primary
email address for the groups, giving them a
@grouply.com extension.
This is being done to those who are joining and is
changed on the
Yahoo ID so all mail received from the lists will now
be sent to the
grouply.com address. The only place this is mentioned
is deep in one
of the FAQs and not up front and in plain view of the
new subscriber.
Second, members who join the Grouply website have to
give their
member
ID and password. This opens up a security issue for
those members as
now a third party has complete access to their Yahoo
account. This
includes not just the Yahoo Groups, but also personal
mail and any
other services accessed via the Yahoo ID.
Third, once a member joins Grouply, it opens access to
the files and
posts of each group to the Grouply website. Grouply
staff can then
access these files. If they get hacked, then it opens
the doors to
the
groups getting hacked as well. Additionally, Grouply
will pull the
list's archives onto their servers, generally a
violation of Yahoo's
TOS.
Fourth, it opens the risk of spam. Not only is there
an enticement to
send a message to all the new grouply.com subscriber's
groups
announcing the Grouply service, but any other
advertising or
announcements as well. This is spam and few lists
tolerate such
solicitations. In other words, information from a
group can be made
accessible to everyone, and massive amounts of spam
with your email
address may be generated."
In short, I am leery of Grouply. I am concerned about
members of the
list who join because you are exposing fellow group
members,
moderators, and owners to unauthorized use of their
emails and group
information by Grouply. I may implement a policy very
soon that will
disallow Grouply email addresses on this list.
If you have joined Grouply and are using them to read
this list, you
should reconsider
Grouply or cease having Grouply collect your mail for
this group. If
you choose to leave Grouply, please go into your Yahoo
Groups
account at: http://groups. yahoo.com/ mygroups and
change your
password.
I hope you understand the measures I feel I must take
and will take
precautions to protect your Yahoo ID.

As you say, that extra step could end up getting your own address on a
spam list, so why not just put a good question where it's meant to be,
on the application page, and let it do its work without the extra step
and that risk?

That works too, but again, extra steps that could be prevented by just
having a good question upfront.
In my other groups I keep the new member on Moderated
Status, so I can review his or her post before it
appears on the board. I check out their first
posting, if it is on topic and clearly written by a
person, I approve the post and release them for future
postings.
If things change I can always give them the boot
later.

I just sent an email to it asking if they were real. I wouldn't suggest
everyone doing that, because it could just confirm your address for them,
but it worked for me...
On the side of the software box, in the "System Requirements" section,
it said "Requires Windows 95 or better." So I installed Linux.

The answer is right on our front page but a bot won't know that. You can

Hello,
Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Groups.
So, you would like to a new moderator for your Yahoo! Group. Great, we
can help!
To select a new moderator please use the group's polls feature to create
a poll. Then list the member names, or email addresses, of a few members
who would like to be a moderator as these will be the choices for the
poll. You will need to announce the poll to your group and ask the
members to vote on who they would like to be moderator. Please allow the
poll to remain open for a period of at least one week. Once the poll has
closed, please email a reply back to us and we will appoint the
"elected" moderator.
We do apologize for any inconvenience during this process and please let
us know if you have any additional questions or concerns.
Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Groups.

As I mentioned in my last post, unless someone has the
passwords the whole issue is moot. The current
settings are locked by the owner and only he can
change them. Since he seems to have abandoned the
group there is not much point in talking about how to
fix this one.
Sadly, this is all too common a state in Yahoo Groups.
Abandoned groups become magnets for spammers. I
recently left 'gurpsfantasyrealm' for the same reason.
This group is dead and the spammers circle the
carrion!

Unless someone currently active in the group has moderator or owner
status, or knows the group's passwords, this whole discussion is moot.
The listed group owner, 'fang' is no longer listed as active in the
group and his email is bouncing.
I wrote to his address and the email was returned. Here is the response.

Are you still moderating gurps_magic group on Yahoo?

........................................
Under the circumstances the easiest solution to the SPAM problem is to
set up a new group, say 'gurps_magic2' and invite selected members of
this group to join. Set the group parameters to control spammers,
designate two or three additional moderators and start over.

I like Missiledine's points too. Though I'd like to add that once the
current spammers are banned and new members require approval, there
will be far less moderating to do, so burning out isn't much of an
issue. Not to say that having assistant mods isn't a great idea.

To start with Membership needs to require Approval to
stop spammers from automaticaly joining. Often times
the Id of spammers is easily recognized as having been
machine generated.
Second, the first post of any member needs to be
Moderated. Only after a new member has demonstrated
that he or she is not a spammer by posting an on topic
message, does the membership become Unmoderated
allowing the member to post freely.
Third, the first time a member posts off topic or spam
they should receive a warning from the moderator. The
second time they are gone.
Of course this assumes an active moderator or list
owner who regularly checks the group. I would suggest
that the list owner or moderator seek out several
assistant moderators so that one person does not burn
out or fall behind in monitoring the group.

Hey Everyone,
I wanted to know what everyone thought about a couple of ideas that might
help cut down on the SPAM (unwanted email) on the mail list. The first is
(if not already in place) allow only email from people on the list. And the
second is require authorization (from the moderator) before allowing someone
on the list.
At the moment, let's keep the discussion to weather we want to do this or
not. Then, once we decide (if we do) we can worry about how...
Sincerely,
Matt

Hello folks ... I'm back after a long hiatus ...
Well, Steve Jackson & Co have consistently said that there is no money
to be made in modules and gameworlds for them. Having said that, there
are a number of adventures being published through e23 so that becomes
a possibility.
With the 4th Edition, they use Infinite Worlds as the primary
background for all other worlds, designating them as parallels to our
world. Banestorm updates the old Fantasy world of Yrth to the year
2005, and throws a number of twists into it.
In terms of scenarios, someone's done a few Forgotten Realms
adventures for GURPS (4e I believe). Let me dig out the URL for you
... http://www.thalcos.com/archives.htm
So what's new with me ... Well, I'm running a semi-regular GURPS
fantasy game in the old D&D world of Mystara. My players started off
as a group of 5, then dropped to 3 as two fell to family commitments,
and then to 2 as the next player burned out.
So I currently have 2 players (running 3 characters), and I've room
for one or two more. There is a gnomish mage/trickster, an human
ranger/assassin and a human mercenary in the party, who have just
managed to rescue the local godar from a band of Orcs.
Let's just say that when you get the drop on someone, (having an
illusionist with Illusion Disguise tends to give you the advantage),
GURPS combat can be very lethal.
Well, I'll quickly sign off but I'll be back to chat with the old
regulars from here.

One of the most addictive games i've played to date. The aim of the
game is to kill as many creatures or other players as possible while
progressing through the dungeon while levelling up your character. You
can play for prizes which include real money or extra turns to use in
future games.

Hope you enjoy. ;)
Another list, not this one. I think it was .. I forget now..
Just wanted to make sure.. It may have to do with other issues,
such as how come D20 was doing better in some peoples eyes, or
the Palladium issues of late, or .. not sure..
Paul, http://www.gcod.net cool.
www.missiledine.com Hum..
Sorry, it was from another list, the comment, and was just
wonder if it was valid to peoples minds..
So sounds like the complaint was unfounded, cool
Me, like to do some game world, or scenario work, but long
story.. I am okay with ideas, but loosy putting them down and
need help from local friends, but they are all D20, so . best
of luck on your worlds..
Now have to remember which list I heard the "complaint" from and
have them eat some of their words..
