News

Hello Convergence

This is the moment that Bill Gates spoke about many, many years ago:

The Seattle Times reported the new agreements with several networks (including CBS, TBS and MTV), Paramount Pictures and Warner Brothers "to bring an initial lineup of more than 1,000 hours of hit television shows and movies to Xbox 360 consoles" starting November 22nd, with to bring standard and HD TV content via the Internet.

"It announced plans to offer movie rentals and full purchases of television shows, joining Apple Computer, Amazon.com and other rivals in vying for the "what do you want to watch tonight?" entertainment dollar.

"By year-end, the service is to have at least 1,000 hours of television programs and movies from partners that include the CBS and MTV networks, Turner Broadcasting System, Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment."

This is brilliant on Microsoft's part, and not unforeseen. Bill G was preaching this sort of convergence years ago, and everyone talked about it when the first XBox came out. The XBox, while a great gaming machine, was really all about getting a commodity media player PC into the living room. Everyone sees a next-gen gaming system, but its really just a media device with a pre-built network for commoditizing digital content. I say again: Brilliant.

Atari games coming to Xbox Live

Let the Xbox Live Love-In continue. Atari is launching more games for the XBLA next January:

Nothing like using a $400 gaming rig and a HDTV to play Asteroids!

Not much more to say than that. Oh, and you might want to brush up on your cheat.

Iron Man Game Official

Though, because its a movie tie in, it will likely suck:

Marvel Comics is tapping Sega to bring Iron Man to a next-generation console near you. The comic book company has given Sega exclusive rights to develop and distribute games based on the Iron Man property. This is a multiyear agreement and Sega is planning to create games based on both the comic and the upcoming Iron Man feature film, with the movie-based title coming out first. The Iron Man movie is being directed by Jon Favreau and stars Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, the billionaire industrialist who creates and dons the Iron Man suit. It's scheduled to hit theaters on May 2, 2008 and is the first feature film to be independently produced by Marvel Entertainment. Chances are that the first game will be released near the same date. No further details about the Iron Man games were provided.

Iron Man was my favorite superhero when I was a kid. Lets just say that after being initially above the moon when I heard there was going to be a Marvel Exploitation, I mean, "Feature Film" about the Man of Iron, I'm all shades of skeptical now due to the casting. I'm just thankful they didn't think to put Clooney into another hero outfit...
