re: Does X count?
Sure. But you're asking me like I have some authority over this :)
Who decides whether you get a medal or not? You do.
All you have to worry about it whether everybody will think less of
you for claiming medals that you didn't earn. If you think you did a
reasonable job and deserve to claim the medal, go for it.
Jonathan
Well if it does I've just gained an extra award since I have every intention of
publishing through them... (as you can see here:
http://whirlygamechef.blogspot.com/2009/08/what-goes-around.html)
I'm also curious, if I have rules on the board, and an instruction booklet 4 or
less pages in length, does that count for the brevity award?
Cheers,
Declan

Yeah, I definitely thing artists could team up with designers for the
Save Water Award.
Sorry for misleading you about the art thing. I said there was going
to be some art component because I was originally intending for the
ingredients to simply be the icons, without the associated words, so
that designers could interpret the icons however they liked (the icons
would be art to be interpreted, basically), but I talked with some
secret advisers and they convinced me otherwise.
Yes, Game Chef has not traditionally had a fully art-based component.
Last year was really different. There might be art in the future,
though. And, honestly, if you can't find a designer that you're
excited about working with, let me know and maybe we can make a bonus
level based on a piece of art or something. If you're really excited
about participating, I'm sure we can work something out.

Er, bonus medal, I mean. Not bonus level :)

Well, can I toss my hat in your direction and ask if you were willing to collaborate from an art perspective with someone like myself or some other interested party to attempt to nab the Save Water, Bathe with a Friend award and the Dressed to Impress awards?

My only experience with GC was last year, so if that's not the normal way of things, as seems to be the case, then I'll stop asking stupid questions, but it was pointed out that therewouldbe an art portion of the contest.
I understand that it's "GameChef" and not "Art Chef," and since the two parts are independent of each other, I was originally under the assumption (and I know what happens when you assume) that they were going to be working on the same time frame, so any specifications for both would be released at the same time.
I'm not saying that the contest should be art focused; I'm just asking what I'm supposed to be doing in order to participate, if I can participate at all.

Oh -- my bad. I thought "artist" was a fancy-pants euphemism for "game designer."
FWIW, I agree with Kynn re: art.

In my opinion, expecting Game Chef to continue to be art-inclusive -- as it was last year -- is a bad notion, and it's not a good idea to take last year's inclusion of artwork as a precedent. The first seven Game Chef events did not have any special way for artists to participate; 2008 was the exception. I don't think artists should expect that future Game Chef events will necessarily be artwork-focused, but rather game-design focused as all previous GCs have been.

Oh, in this case I disregard any mysterious icons which have nothing
to do with the ingredients. (whistling) :)

There are some mysterious icons floating around the site, but the
ingredients haven't been formally announced yet. I'll definitely post
an update to this list when the announcement happens.
Jonathan, still hurriedly designing more icons...
Hi!
Do I see right that the ingredients are up?

Hey Folks,
The new website for Game Chef 2009 is now live, including details on
how to participate in the social, community aspects of the challenge.
The actual theme, ingredients, and submission guidelines will be
posted late tomorrow night, when the contest gets fully under weigh,
though there are some hits in the new site design.
http://gamechef.wordpress.com/
Enjoy and feel free to ask any questions here or, better yet, in the
comments on the website where everyone can see them.
Best,
Jonathan
Tap-in also starts this weekend. They'll be announcements, don't worry.

This coming weekend is just to familiarize folks with the structure
and setup. The big weekend for writing, I imagine, will be the
weekend after, as folks scramble to make the first deadline.

Will we have enough to begin work on Saturday? I might clear my weekend schedule if so.
