Apologies for my previous answer to this. I was just skimming
old email and realized that in my inept snarkiness, I'd made a
mistake. I'd just assumed I'd put the version number somewhere
on the opening screen (a standard programming practice), but I
guess not. Duh...

So a sure-fire way to figure out your version# is to open up
gal.bas in a text editor (if you can't, try copying or renaming
it to gal.txt), and then look at the first line. If it says
something like "REM Galactic v2.4c" then I'm guessing you've
probably got v2.4c

Incidentally, I don't know if this is too much to ask, but
does dosbox still run under Windows 7? I'm wondering if
galactic will still be at all usable after I upgrade.

Oh crud. It runs find under Vista Business but I'd forgotten about testing DosBox under Windows 7.

A quick Google search revealed some people are running DosBox under Win7 but they're reporting problems with not being able to modify the config file or run DosBox in full screen mode. However, the person complaining about full screen mode issues also said the same thing about Vista and I can run DosBox full screen all day long under Vista just by using the Alt-Enter hotkey.

My condolences as well.

It's "funny" how attached I can get to people I've never even met.

I remember Gen.Turokan. I even think of him occasionally and how his work brightened my days, even as he was dying. I hope the General and Lord Ronin are hoisting one wherever they are.  I know I shall here.  To all our friends, the quick and the dead, salute!

Hello. I have not used Galactic in years, but recently created a sector for a
campaign I will soon be running and decided to use Galactic to keep track of it.
In order to do so, I first created the subsectors, then put those together into
a sector file using the proper format.

Then, I executed sec2gal on the sector file to create the Gal24c database.
Finally, as instructed in the sec2gal documentation (README), I then edited the
appropriate files to assign subsector names.

Finally, I pasted this directory tree into the \CLASSIC directory tree with the
other sectors.

Is there something else I need to do in order to make Galactic 2.4c see this
sector (FAR FRONTIERS, for the curious)? I have so far been unable to
accomplish this. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Every copy of sec2gal I have seen available for download is in a gzipped tar
archive. You'll need a program that can extract it, such as 7-zip for Windows.

Under Linux or Unix, however, or Cygwin under Windows, you can type the
following to extract the archive:

gunzip < filename | tar xvf -

Running sec2gal requires that you have access to Perl. Perl comes standard with
most Linux and Unix distributions. Cygwin also includes Perl and will run the
sec2gal script without issue under Windows.

Let me know if you require further assistance.

Hi Ron!

Yeah, you need to edit the sector list in order to let the program know that the
sector is there. Each galaxy has its own sector list. The classic galaxy's
sector list is gals\classic\classic.lst (it is a plain vanilla text file as are
all the program's data files).

You can edit it manually, or you can just enter the classic galaxy from with the
program (where it gives you the map w/ all the sectors) and hit the "<" key.

Info about how the edit the sector list is available in
help\qna\data\list.txt

Hope this helps, and if you have any questions or need any further help, just
let me know... -jim

Hey, Jim! Good to hear from you. Also, thanks; that did the trick. I'll
publish what I have when it's more fully fleshed out. As you might imagine, I
am not overly concerned about canon...

BTW, we've started a push to reinvigorate The Traveller Downport; this Far
Frontiers thing is a part of that. There will also be more Landgrab material
forthcoming and some other goodies as we move ahead.

It's been too long without any Traveller activity for the staff at downport.com
and we were beginning to despair; real life and all that. Heh, heh, heh...

Take a look at QB64 (http://www.qb64.net) - it seems to be a 32- and
64-bit translator/compiler for QBasic, currently advertising about 98%
compatibility - and the implications are that the remaining 2% or so are
the stuff that most QB programmers probably don't use, like PEEK/POKE or
IN/OUT (port related). It's entirely possible that GAL can just be
recompiled with this, and bingo!.

Sorry, but NO go! QB64 hasn't implemented DEF FNxxx yet. I
suppose you could go through and convert all the old style
functions to function/end function, but I'm not sure that
would work in Gal's case. I also don't like the small size of
the display window in QB64, and I do not want to run Galactic
in full screen mode.

I will say, it appears to be getting close, though.

Well, after spending some time on it...still no go.

I converted all the Def FNxxx's to functions and I got the
main menu to run...but...the arrow wasn't matched up with the
menu...but, I could choose a menu item and About worked and
Starcharts worked to get me to the galaxies menu, and I could
choose a galaxy...but, I couldn't get it to display any data.

So, close, but no joy.

Someone that really doesn't want to use Dosbox can work on it
and maybe get it working, but for me...I'll stick with DosBox.

FREEBASIC has a very high degree of QB compatibility and produces Windows and
Linux executables.

http://www.freebasic.net/forum/

A while ago, I ran GALACTIC through it. I was able to get the main menu part up
and running within about 1 hour as a compiled Windows program. From what I
remember I had to convert line numbers that were referenced by GOTOs etc to
labels
e.g. 00010->L00010
and change some of the SHELLs to external programs to calls to subroutines
containing the the external code.

I converted a ~7500 line QB program of my own to run as Window program in a
couple of hours work.

Had occasion to move a machine to Windows 7, and confirmed that GAL doesn't like
that environment. Played with it briefly, even trying the visualization options
available natively(ish) in Windows 7 including installing an instance of XP as a
virtual machine under Windows 7. All without luck.

Recently moved a second, beefier machine to Windows 7 (new desktop machine), and
was planning to do visualization for other projects anyway. I built an extra
little Windows XP machine on the side, and I am very happy to report that GAL
DOES run in XP under VMWare server! (http://www.vmware.com/products/server)
(Hmm... now that I think about it, I'm surprised someone hasn't just built an
old DOS VM with GAL preinstalled and made it available as an appliance. :-) I
may have to toy around with that idea.)

Long live Galactic!

Recently moved a second, beefier machine to Windows 7 (new desktop machine), and was planning to do visualization for other projects anyway.  I built an extra little Windows XP machine on the side, and I am very happy to report that GAL DOES run in XP under VMWare server!  (http://www.vmware.com/products/server)  (Hmm... now that I think about it, I'm surprised someone hasn't just built an old DOS VM with GAL preinstalled and made it available as an appliance.  :-) I may have to toy around with that idea.)

Long live Galactic!

I'm running it through DosShell v1.7 and it's fine.

DosBox here, too. I have it on a USB key and run it on XP,
Vista and 7 depending upon the computer I plug the key into.

Works great!
