Is it just me, or are PBEMs, sims, whatever-you'd-like-to-call-them a
dying genre?

On the one hand, maybe it's just me - I restarted WAR a month ago (by
which I mean I've spent the last month rebuilding everything) after
six months in which it was dead, and a game in that niche (near-future
geopolitics) has always been hard to garner interest in. I never
(previously; at the moment we don't have a website, which I imagine is
a turnoff for a lot of people) seem to have a good handle on what
works anyway.

But on the other, I've noticed something broader. There are fewer and
fewer active places to advertise, period, it seems, and advertising is
in many ways the lifeblood of PBEMs.

Is the genre dying, or is it just me?

(After such depressing thoughts, damn the elders for locking up the
liquor closet.)

... In general, I think we've suffered a general, (but non-catastrophic) decline as more kids grow up as non-readers who have Halo and other games to occupy...

I think play-by-post RPGs are doing just fine for the most part, but Yahoo groups might just be losing patronage since forums have become so much easier to...
