I started out as an on-line player. I'd heard about a kids' Star
Trek RPG group, and since it sounded like fun, it got me looking for
one for grownups.
And yeah, I admit that my early characters would probably have fallen
into the Mary Sue area (if I knew if any of the people I first
started roleplaying with were Catholic, I'd make sure they got put up
for sainthood after their deaths for having to put up with me in
those early days).
I started running games about a year and a half after I started
playing. I'd been a player in a fantasy game, and a while after we
started the GM went AWOL on us, ultimately returning only long enough
to shut the game down. I attempted to get a replacement game going,
which didn't last too long itself (admittedly, I think it was because
I tried to rush things too much in getting the game set up and going
when I had only the vaguest clue as to what I was doing, if that
much).
In both playing and GMing, I've changed in that I've learned to
be...well, I don't know if it would be accurate to say that I'm a lot
more bold. I think it would be appropriate to say that I've learned
to speak up a lot more than I used to when I started (back in the
early days, I was a little more timid and tried to be nice to
everyone, and didn't want to rock the boat, which led to a couple of
situations that, suffice to say, could have been handled better), and
to articulate better what I feel.
(From a GMing standpoint, I also found this list, which certainly
helps!)
