Actually you'd be surprised what some of the best writers in the world turn in
to editors. If those editors were game players they would tell you they do far
more than what you envision. Far more.

Avoiding unwarranted homonym replacement is hardly "being perfect"; it's
pretty basic stuff. Sure, a lot of writers are saved by editors, just as
a lot of singers are saved by autotune. But an editor shouldn't be a
proof reader, weeding out typos and erroneous word choices, but more
someone who keeps an eye on style, flow, readability and presentation,
if you ask me.
And to be back on-topic: allowing zig-zagging would alter the game
considerably, making it much easier. I could see that as an option if
you're playing with kids, but hardly if you're serious adult gamers or
F1 enthusiasts. We've got an adapted rule set that's even more difficult
than the original rules, largely because our players asked for precisely
that in this, our seventh championship season. We don't even allow
zig-zagging allong arrows in corners (which I have understood some
people do - I don't remember what the original rules say).
